Madoka Kyouno

Maru!

The Hero of the show, an optimistic, kind-hearted and overtly energetic girl attending a One-Gender School. She's utterly devoted to her hometown and to the duties of the Jersey Club, of which she starts off as its sole member. When given the choice to pilot the Humongous Mecha to protect her town, in a change of pace she readily accepts, maintaining her usual cheerful demeanor the entire time. Her Vox unit is Aura, but she calls it Midori, and it contains the power of wind.

  • The Ace: She seems to be good at everything.
  • Badass Adorable
  • Batter Up: Madoka bats away a flying newspaper dispenser, using a ripped from the ground streetlight.
  • Berserk Button: Don't even think you can get away with insulting or harming her comrades.
  • Catch Phrase / Verbal Tic: Madoka always says "Maru", which means "Tick", "Circle" or "Perfect" in English. (So named because "O" is right and "X" is wrong in japanese game shows) Which may also be a Japanese pun on her name, since "Madoka" can also mean circle.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She doesn't find anything wrong with going to school in her swimsuit.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Madoka uses a ripped electrical line to try and choke Kirius's robot. Of course, since it's a robot, it doesn't do any good. Though, it does make the pilot have a bizarre panic attack because he thinks the ineffective choking might be a "finishing move" he doesn't know about.
  • Crazy Prepared: Madoka just happened to wear a swimsuit under her school uniform the day she sees someone drowning.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: A pretty mundane version, though: brown hair, brown eyes.
  • Destructive Saviour: Madoka consciously does her best to avoid being one. It doesn't always work...
  • Determinator: Not just with fighting robots, but in general.
  • Embarrassing Tattoo: Her Vox mark is located right on her bum, but her cousin Yoko has no qualms with scrutinizing the area at length.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first line of the series is also this for Madoka, set to a heartwarmingly-beautiful ocean-sunrise:

Madoka: "Today I pray for the happiness of everybody."

  • Extracurricular Enthusiast: Her defining quirks. Her club is "Jersey Club", which primary activity is being involved in every other extracurriculars, where needed.
  • Falling Into the Cockpit: Originally pilots her Vox without having any idea how to really use it.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: When wearing her jersey (i.e. pretty much all the time), Madoka has the right leg and left sleeve rolled up.
  • First Name Ultimatum: Madoka doesn't like it that her uncle is drinking in daylight, especially with a complete stranger.

Madoka: "HIROSHI!"

  • Genki Girl
  • Hard Head: While piloting, Madoka hits her forehead hard against the controls of her robot. It doesn't phase her one bit.
    • However, she does get a bruise from it.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: In episode 6, they FINALLY send actual weaponry to the Vox units, and Madoka ends up with a sword.
  • I Call It Vera: Madoka calls her robot, Vox Aura, "Midorin" due to its green color scheme. The English equivalent would be calling it "Greenie".
  • Improvised Weapon: A practitioner of the technique.
  • Jumped At the Call: As long as it helps her friend, Madoka doesn't mind piloting a robot for the first time in her life to defeat alien forces. Which is pretty refreshing when compared to other heroes of other Mecha shows.
    • She's briefly upset when she has to pilot again, but she quickly gets over it.
  • My Name Is Not Durwood: She can't seem to remember Villagiulio's name.
  • Nice Girl: Unconditionally kind to everyone and anyone. Then again, one has to wonder if she really has any other friends aside from Lan and Muginami.
    • The latter point is all but confirmed in episode 10.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Her activating the Rinne the first time was obviously a very very bad thing. And when she does it again, the world basically ends up in the crapper. She doesn't intend to, but it still qualifies.
  • Ordinary High School Student
  • Plucky Girl
  • Show the Forehead: While piloting the Vox, she'll tie her hair up. A close look at the picture in episode 6 shows that Yoko wore the same look as a child.

  • Wrestler in All of Us: Her solution to a robot menace?

Fin E Ld Si Laffinty (Lan)

Wan!

The Lancer to Madoka, a strange and quiet girl who happens to be a princess from a faraway planet. Essentially serves as the antithetical counterbalance to Madoka's blatant cheerfulness. Pilots Vox Rympha, or Orca as she calls it, which hides water-based elemental powers.

Muginami

Kashikomari!

A mysterious, yet ultimately somewhat ditzy and idealistic girl who is in actuality the adoptive sister of the main antagonist. Despite her cheerfulness, she hides quite a sad side to her. She's the pilot of Vox Ignis, which contains fire-based powers.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Big Brother Worship: to Villagiulio. Although they are Not Blood Related, Muginami refers to him as such and even gets a Memoria mark in order to please him. Of course, how ELSE do you treat essentially the only semblance of a friend you have?
  • Cloudcuckoolander / The Ditz
  • Double Weapon: Receives a double bladed sword as her Vox weapon.
  • Expy: A blatant one in appearance, name-similarity and personality to Kotobuki "Mugi" Tsumugi of K-On!, with the already impressive rack exaggerated to Gag Boobs level.
  • Gainaxing: The main source of it on the show!
  • I Call It Vera: She nicknames Vox Ignis as 'fuupo', which in certain Chinese dialects means 'amber'.
  • Irony: She promised to get revenge for Lan during the baseball game. When episode 6 rolls around...

Yoko Nakaizumi

Madoka's older cousin, a tough woman who refuses to let crap get to her, or anyone for that matter. Appears to know a bit more about the Vox units than she should, given her profession. The original founder of the Jersey-Club before Madoka took over.

Villagiulio

The main antagonist and the leader of Kiss, a group of space outlaws. He was once royalty on his home planet, and for some reason or another is quite into capturing the Vox units.

  • Affably Evil: He doesn't seem like THAT bad of a guy, even if he's somewhat gruff and unkempt.
    • Faux Affably Evil: But he was MEAN to Muginami what with his "The Reason You Suck" Speech. Even then, he appears to be doing it with decent intentions, likely wanting Muginami to be friends with girls her age instead of interplanetary rogues.
  • Badass Longcoat: Parodied - he gets into a fight with Hiroshi over one. He won and wears it from that point onward.
  • Big Bad
  • Shoo the Dog: His scene with Muginami is probably this, though his exact reasons remain unknown so far.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He used to be NOTHING like he by the time we see him. He was in the exact same position as Muginami- poor, starving, gentle, etc.
  • Villains Out Shopping: The first we see much of him for more than a second, he's in a well-mannered bout with Hiroshi over a fur coat, which he eventually buys.

The rather Hot-Blooded member of the trio from De Metrio's forces who have made an alliance with Kiss.

  • Attractive Bent Gender: He passes off as a girl so easily that it's a genuine surprise when he turns out to have been the maid the whole time. In episode 9, some guy even starts flirting with him even after being told he was a guy.
  • Bishounen
  • Dragged Into Drag: Somehow, the poor guy wound up as Asteria's maid, complete with female maid outfit. Despite this, he doesn't take it off after that episode, and he seems to almost like the outfit.
  • Meido: Later becomes Asteria's maid.
