The princess of Lenstantsa, and an Admiral of their Navy. She's not the oldest princess of her kingdom, but she's the only one who's eligible, which is why she entered the Waltz--that, and she was irritated with her sisters for settling for anything other than a prince when they married. She spends most of her time acting between silly to downright insane, and is always perky and cheerful--however, she has the most real combat experience of all the princesses and is incredibly skilled in combat.

Unfortunately for Liliana, she doesn't get along very well with Chris and the other princesses, and she finds herself developing a crush on Arata early on. This causes her a bit of trouble when she actually tries to fight in the Waltz.

Character sheet for Princess Waltz, under construction. Please put any major story details from the second half of the game under spoiler cuts.

The heroines (and hero)

Chris Northfield

The prince of Eldhiland, and the main love interest of the story. Chris transfers to Arata's school one day, has all the girls in an uproar over "his" lovely looks, and accidentally drags Arata into the Princess Waltz when she drops one of her rings and he puts it on. After a great deal of arguing and heroic stupidity, the two of them decide to team up, and realize that together they are capable of transforming into the super-powerful princess of the sword, Iris.

Chris is very hung-up over her princehood, and is fighting in the Princess Waltz for reasons that Arata does not immediately grasp; namely, so that she can become a "true prince". As the tournament proceeds, it's revealed to the player that Chris has deep insecurities that stem from the fact that she is unable to properly inherit the throne, due to being born female.

Halfway through the game, Chris pretends trying to kill Arata, forcing him to kill her instead, and her body is hijacked by the true villain. The focus of the game then shifts to Arata and the other princesses' attempts to save her.

Tropes associated with Chris

  • A Date with Rosie Palms: What happens when she first realises she's attracted to Arata.
  • Badass
  • Bifauxnen: Very much so.
  • Bokukko
  • Brother-Sister Incest: She and Arata are technically cousins, as well as half-siblings. Mysteriously, the game chooses not to broach this subject.
  • Butt Monkey: Between the girls in her class and April, Chris just can't catch a break.
  • Cool Sword: Can turn into a BFS under the right conditions.
  • Damsel in Distress: Whenever she's not combined with Arata to be Iris, she will get herself into massive amounts of trouble. Humans (and princes) are just that weak compared to the generic monsters of the game, let alone the princesses.
  • Fusion Dance: The result being, of course, female.
  • Grand Theft Me: Is taken over by the Big Bad of the game.
  • Green Eyes
  • Hair of Gold
  • Hair-Trigger Temper
  • Heroic Bastard: Cecelia, Chris' mother, was the younger sister of Princess Lydia of Soldia, winner of the previous Waltz. Jealous of her sister & desiring the Emperor, she had an affair with him, which brought forth Chris.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Given a sadistic choice by the Big Bad to kill Arata and absorb the remnants of his power, she instead turns her sword upon herself.
  • Luminescent Blush
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The game pretty much makes it impossible to not know the truth once The Reveal rolls around.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver
  • Useless Useful Spell: The Prince's Blessing. It's supposed to keep her alive at all costs, but the darn thing just can't keep up with some rates of damage. The fact that she only has half the Blessing is probably part of the problem.
  • The White Prince: She tries very hard to be this.

Angela Victoire Bledin

The princess of Agnis, who entered the Princess Waltz just to have fun doing the fighting. She's rather bloodthirsty and enjoys battle more than anything else, and doesn't have much interest in marrying Chris, even though that's the goal of the tournament. She's known as the Dragon Princess among the others, and is a very formidable opponent; she wields a burning lance called Perpetuelle.

Angela is noted for being hard to get along with (and tends to blatantly ignore her adviser, Glen), but when the mood strikes her she can be very kind. She also has a bad habit of throwing vast amounts of money around, and abusing her special status as a princess when she shops...

In the second half of the story, Angela is the first princess to join up with Arata's party to save Chris. By the end of the game, it's possible for her to fall in love with Arata.

Tropes associated with Angela

Shikikagura Suzushiro

The young princess of Shihou, who has known Chris since they were young children. She has devoted herself entirely to Chris and is more intent on becoming her wife than any other princess, although she doesn't know about Chris' true gender. Once she arrives in the story, she charms her way into the circle of Nakama with her experienced bento-making skills, although she remains highly suspicious of Arata, at least at first.

Contrary to all expectations as she's quite a small girl, Suzushiro proves herself ridiculously powerful by defeating Liesel against all odds, and holding her own against Iris. In the second half of the game, she does not take Chris' fate well at all and initially tries to assassinate Arata to save her, but Arata manages to stop her and get her to cooperate with everyone else.

Dutiful both in battle and out of it, Suzushiro is always a staunch ally, if not precisely a calm one. By the end of the game, she may develop a crush on Arata. She's voiced by Yūko Gotō. Yes, Mikuru Asahina fans, We are talking about THAT Yuko Goto. Then again, it is Gotouther-sama.

Tropes associated with Suzushiro

Liliana "Lun Lun" Guenther

The princess of Lenstantsa, and an Admiral of their Navy. She's not the oldest princess of her kingdom, but she's the only one who's eligible, which is why she entered the Waltz—that, and she was irritated with her sisters for settling for anything other than a prince when they married. She spends most of her time acting between silly to downright insane, and is always perky and cheerful—however, she has the most real combat experience of all the princesses and is incredibly skilled in combat.

Unfortunately for Liliana, she doesn't get along very well with Chris and the other princesses, and she finds herself developing a crush on Arata early on. This causes her a bit of trouble when she actually tries to fight in the Waltz.

In the second half of the game, Liliana joins up with Arata's team after finding herself unable to return to Eldhiland when she was defeated. She's voiced by Taguchi Hiroko.

Tropes associated with Lilliana

Liesel Hansel (Kanada Riko)

The princess of Palmied, a blacksmithing country. She doesn't really have much interest in marrying Chris—she's really just involved in the Waltz to prove the power of her Dress and for the sake of everyone who helped create it. Liesel employs ruthless tactics and prefers to win by any means possible rather than fighting with honor, and she deeply resents the other princesses for having strength naturally.

Liesel is the first princess to be defeated, when she and Suzushiro fight. This appears to be the end of her role in the story, but it turns out that Liesel is actually disguised as a student in Arata's class, and her persona as "Liesel" was pretty much a fabrication to help her to win. Liesel, more comfortable with being called Riko, is a painfully shy blackmith who was chosen to enter the Waltz because she had the best affinity with the Dress she made once its original contestant was disqualified. Even after being defeated, she stays on Earth and tries to make up for hurting her friends by helping Arata save Nodoka. She's the second princess to join up with him in the second half of the game, and if the player chooses her and helps her overcome her insecurity and insufficiency complex, she falls in love with him.

Tropes associated with Liesel

Fukamori Shizuka

Arata's older sister, who gives him advice throughout the story although she isn't directly involved in the events surrounding the Princess Waltz for most of the game. She's very skilled in kendo and has always practiced with Arata since they were children, meaning that they're very in sync with each other.

In the second half of the game, the player may or may not discover that she is the Princess of Wisley, who had her memories wiped and her powers sealed by her mother so that they could live normal lives while protecting Arata. However, she's been so determined to protect Arata that her powers break out in uncontrollable ways every now and again, resulting in her appearance as the "beast princess". If Arata doesn't show interest in any of the other girls, we see that their mother decides to unseal Shizuka's powers for the final battle, restoring her memory and conscious abilities.

Tropes associated with Shizuka

Fukamori Arata / Chris Northfield

The hero of the story, who winds up accidentally involved in the Waltz after picking up the ring Chris dropped and putting it on. He quickly adapts to the Broken Masquerade, and is able to sync powerfully with Chris until The Reveal, whereupon the two of them run into trouble fighting together because of Arata's new awareness of her gender. The two of them spend a great deal of time training, but things get a bit awkward as their restored closeness and synchronization ramps up their UST a bit higher than they can stand.

After Chris tries to sacrifice herself to save Arata and becomes victim to the villain's Grand Theft Me, Arata gathers up the other princesses to fight back. Around this time, he learns that he's Chris' cousin/half-brother, and the real prince of Eldhiland--Chris was supposed to die so that he could come into his birthright. Not liking this plan, Arata and his harem faithful allies do their best to fend off the true villain and save her.

Other story characters

Shichiou Eldhin

The Big Bad of the game, who executes a Grand Theft Me on Chris' body. Is actually the true first Emperor of Eldhiland, created the place, and was sealed away by Iris and 5 other princesses during the first Waltz, after executing his Face Heel Turn. Has spent the last thousand years figuring out a way to get free and back into the world.

Tropes associated with Shichiou

April

A mysterious maid who was Chris' tutor. is actually working with the Big Bad on his plan to get free. Absurdly powerful.

  • Heel Face Revolving Door
  • Karma Houdini - Suffers no consequences for all the shit she's pulled. Of course, she might have been a good guy all along, so...
  • Meido
  • Sexy Mentor
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: at the end of the game, she introduces herself to Crow and Pigeon by rattling off a string of titles belonging to one of the gods, before adding "Just Kidding! I'm just a simple maid!" Both of them are unsure what to think.

Kije

A masked priestess who gives orders to Chris on what to do to seize victory in the waltz. Is revealed to be Cecilia, younger sister to Princess Lydia of Soldia, winner of the previous Waltz, who had an affair with the Emperor out of jealousy towards her sister. Also happens to be Chris' mom.

Fukamori Nanae

Seemingly an ordinary high school teacher; Arata's mom and his homeroom teacher. At first appears to be the usual slacker mom common in anime. Lilliana & Shizuka's routes reveal that she's a member of Wisley's Royal Family, a former contestant in the Waltz, and Cecelia's confidante and accomplice in the plot to kill Arata. After failing to kill Arata, she had a change of heart and decided to raise him as her own child, leaving Wisley for Japan to hide away.

  • The Atoner : Tried to kill the original Chris Northfield, but failed, had a change of heart and decided to raise him as her son, Fukamori Arata.
  • Divine Date: Had a one night stand with one of the 3 gods of Eldhiland, resulting in Shizuka and her disqualification from the Waltz that Lydia won.
  • Hot Mom
  • I Was Quite A Looker: Said almost word-for-word by her after Arata reacts with disbelief to her Reveal that she's a former Princess of Wisley and candidate for the Waltz.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Nanae would like nothing more than to live peacefully with her children, away from politics and the Waltz. In Shizuka's ending, however, both of them go back to Wisley to help rebuild.
    • If the "True Ending"/Final End is to be believed, the moving part, at least, is true.
  • Retired Badass: A former candidate for the Waltz.

Nodoka

Arata's childhood friend who lives down the street. Her father runs the kendo dojo where Arata and Shizuka trained.
