Heroes

Gene

"Newsflash, big guy: you can wax on, wax off all you like. I'm still kicking your ass."

The player character of God Hand, he's a 23-year-old smartass drifter who really likes beating people up. He firmly believes that he has a "macho" exterior and a strong sense of justice. When he witnesses a young woman being attacked by a gang of demons, he tries to be the Big Damn Hero and save the woman (who was carrying a large box). Things don't go quite as planned, and Gene ends up with his own right arm being hacked off. Olivia (the woman he saved), patches him up by giving him the legendary God Hand to replace his missing arm. With this new arm, Gene is now capable of fighting off the demonic menace... but he is now forced to kill Angra, the ruler of the demons. Because if Gene doesn't do it, Olivia will cut his arm off with a hatchet!

Associated tropes:

• Adaptation Dye Job: The concept artwork has Gene's hair as white, but in the actual game itself, his hair is more of a dirty brown-brunette.
• Badass
• Badass Longcoat: Wears a long, sleeveless coat that reflects his power.
• Badass Transplant: Well, you don't get born with the God Hand.
• Combat Pragmatist
• Eleventh-Hour Superpower: Gene gets the other God Hand by the end of the game.
• Good Is Not Nice: There's no denying that Gene's got a good heart, but the guy really goes along with Olivia's orders so he can brawl with as many demons as he can.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold
• Levitating Lotus Position: Two of his god roulette moves have him regain health in a floating Lotus Position, Zen Revival and Enlightenment, which heal 30% and 100%, respectively.
• Pointless Band-Aid: For some reason Gene has a band aid on his left face cheek.
• SNK Boss: Double God Hand Gene in the 51st arena match.

Olivia

This young lady is actually one of last surviving members of the clan that has guarded the God Hands for centuries. She had barely escaped from the execution of said clan, entrusted with one of the God Hands by her father. She is saved by Gene when she's attacked by Bruce and Felix, and gives Gene the God Hand as a gift of "thanks"... because she now has someone to order around and stop the demons from overthrowing humanity. But if Gene has the right God Hand, where is the left one?

Associated tropes:

• An Axe to Grind: Olivia carries around hatchet.
• Ax Crazy: To keep Gene in line.
• Good Is Not Nice: Olivia shares this with Gene. She is very willing to use the stick instead of the carrot, and threatens to take the God Hand back if Gene doesn't listen.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She likes to get under Gene's skin, and isn't above threatening him with violence in order to get what she wants, but she ultimately cares about his well-being.
• "Kick Me" Prank: You can say it's thanks to her that the bad guys are throwing down on Gene. If she didn't slap that sign on his back, he could probably walk around unnoticed to most people. But then, we'd have no game, so...
• Ms. Fanservice: To the extent of having lots of pics of her viewable in the pause screen for no apparent reason.
• Zettai Ryouiki: The boots version, Grade B.

Villains

The Four Devas

Belze

"I don't trust dirty humans."

He is the leader of the Four Devas. The oldest, most loyal servant of Angra, Belze is fond of holding meetings and wearing cheap suits. He wants nothing more than resurrecting his master and thinks of humans as mere filth. He doesn't like it when Shannon puts her feet on his precious table. He tends to sit on the sidelines while his underlings do all the dirty work for him, but what will he do when he himself is forced to battle Gene?

Associated tropes:

• Badass in a Nice Suit: Averted and defied. Gene never fights Belze's human form, and it is pointed out that he has a horrible taste in suits.
• Bad Boss: He's very prone to insulting his subordinates over their incompetence.
• Big Creepy Crawly: His demon form is basically a giant fly and shares many similarities with Beelzebub, the demonic "Lord of the Flies" in Judeo-Christian Lore. Even his name is remarkably similar.
• Bug Buzz: Naturally.
• Evil Albino: He has white hair and pallid skin, and is the leader of the Four Devas.
• Fantastic Racism: Thinks all humans are inferior to demons.
• Hellish Pupils: His pupils are slit.
• Jerkass
• Looks Like Orlok: His pointed, elongated ears make him look elf-like.
• One-Winged Angel: His true form is that of a large, demonic fly, which he transforms into before fighting Gene.
• Purple Is the New Black: His black suit is actually a dark shade of purple.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are grayish-red, and he's the leader of the Four Devas.

Azel, the Devil Hand

"I shall choose my own path."

The newest member of the Four Devas, Azel is also in possession of the left God Hand, but he chose to side with the demons to further his own goals. Azel is also human, which means he clashes with Belze often.

Associated tropes:

• Bad Boss: He makes no distinction between humans and demons, attacking both if they annoy him.
• Blond Guys Are Evil
• Cool Shades: Is constantly seen wearing shades.
• Evil Counterpart: Eeeeyup. Azel went for the demonic side, and is fighting for his own interests.
• Expy: He is a combination of Wesker and Leon (in terms of looks) and Vergil (in terms of ulterior motives).
• Jerkass: He has no respect for anyone but himself.
• Mirror Boss: The entire issue with fighting this guy is that he has the equivalent of Gene's powers and techniques. He can dodge like Gene, fight like Gene, and go super like him too.
• The Social Darwinist: "In a world where only the strong survive, only the strongest of the strong rule."
• The Stoic: He's calm and collected in most situations, showing little to no emotion.
  • Not So Stoic: He freaks out when Angra possesses him.
• Villainous Breakdown: After loosing to Gene and getting possessed by Angra, he starts freaking out.
• You Have Failed Me...: He kills Bruce, Felix and Conchita after failing to kill Gene a second time.

Shannon

"Mortal men... so many uses. They can make such wonderful toys!"

Shannon is the only female member of the Four Devas who knows exactly what she wants. She doesn't care about the revival of Angra... only seeking pleasures, partying and her own fancies at any cost. She owns several poison chihuahuas and very much would like to make Gene into her "pet". Elvis has a big crush on her. Gene just thinks she's an insane nympho.

Associated tropes:

• Bad Boss: Her mooks in the first fight against her aren't immune to her ranged attacks, and she has no problem blasting through them in order to hit Gene.
• Baleful Polymorph: Her magic can turn Gene into a helpless chihuahua for a few seconds.
• Beware the Silly Ones: "Insane nympho" or not, she's a tough boss, and using kid gloves on her will get you killed fast.
• Blondes Are Evil
• Dark Action Girl: She's both evil and a skilled combatant.
• Dark Chick
• Dark Magical Girl: Has a staff that shoots hearts, uses magic to do interesting things to people, and is a demon.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?: Gene and Shannon's dialogue sounds like they just finished having sex after he defeats her the first time.

Gene: I always seem to exceed women's expectations. Shannon: You certainly exceeded mine! Gene: Ah yes, another satisfied customer.

• Dominatrix: She has a very domineering and promiscuous personality, dresses in skimpy attire, and enslaves an entire town in order to draw out Gene and take the right God Hand from him.
• Dumb Blonde: Averted. She is not a genius, but she isn't dumb.
• Horny Devils: Literally.
• Jerkass
• Kick the Dog: She can do this Gene if she turns him in to a dog.
• Looks Like She Is Enjoying It/Combat Sadomasochist: Sometimes when hitting her, she shouts "HARDER!".
• One-Winged Angel
• Orgasmic Combat: Seriously. It doesn't help that the quickest way for Gene to deplete her health bar is to spank her.
• Purple Is the New Black
• Schmuck Bait: In the first Boss Battle, the arena has a large cage in the center with several Power-Ups inside; Naturally, if Gene takes the bait, Shannon closes the door and summons two Elite Mooks inside it. Still, the items is good for Boss Arena Recovery.
• Shameless Fanservice Girl
• Stripperiffic: Her attire is very skimpy.
• Too Kinky to Torture: Oh yeah.
• Valley Girl: She talks in this manner.
• Villainous Harlequin: Her chequered outfit invokes this.
• You Are Fat: She often throws insults towards Elvis this way.

Elvis

"This little huevón is the God Hand? Oh, that's rich!"

This fat, heavy cigar-smoking, potty-mouthed member of the Four Devas has a huge crush on Shannon and likes to eat humans. Seeing as how he really likes Shannon, he tries to prove his worth to her by fighting Gene.

Associated tropes:

• Acrofatic: He can dodge just as well as Gene can.
• Badass Beard: His goatee reflects his immense strength.
• Badass Mustache: He has a long moustache that shows how badass he is.
• Badass Spaniard
• Bald of Evil
• Beard of Evil: He has a goatee that reflects his status as a demon.
• Beware the Silly Ones: Much like Shannon, the guy seems like a laughable villain until the fight actually starts.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has a pair of large eyebrows.
• Cigar Chomper: Never seen without his huge cigar. It's the same one, since he's on a budget.
• Cluster F-Bomb: By way of the Foreign Cuss Words.
• Fat Bastard: He's both fat and prone to eating people.
• Foreign Cuss Word: Often says things like "pendejo" (motherfucker), "a la mierda" (hell with it) and "cabrón" (bastard) around pretty much everyone.
• Friendly Enemy: With Gene.
• Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Smokes a large cigar, and is one of the Four Devas.
• Jerkass: Though he is the least jerkish out of all the Four Devas.
• Laughably Evil: Jesus, is he ever.
• Mad Love: To Shannon, as she always rejects Elvis's affections.
• Magnificent Moustaches of Mexico: He is Hispanic, and has a long moustache to reflect this.
• Noble Demon
• One-Winged Angel
• Shout-Out: Often accompanied by an Elvis Presley reference.

Belze: "Elvis has left the building."

• Smoke Out: One of his attacks.
• Smoking Is Cool: Cool and weaponized.
• To Serve Man: Often comments that he eats humans.

Angra/SATAN

A Fallen Angel, cast down into hell for his pride. The lord of all demons, Angra, filled with anger and hatred, raised an army of spirits and demons in a bid to take over the world of humans. Angra would have succeeded; however, a mysterious man with no name appeared and his arms were blessed with the holy power of god. He fought and defeated the demon army, before finally beating the crap out of and sealing Angra away, sending him back down to whence he came. The people he had saved, grateful for this brave savior, gave him the name of "God Hand". The man's arms, the God Hands, were then given to a clan that would protect them from evil, should they be needed again. In the present day, the Four Devas are working to revive Angra, and possibly capture the God Hands to ensure that nothing interferes.

Associated tropes:

• Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He's so huge that he can't fit on the platform you fight him on, instead hovering around it.
• Background Boss: A rare 3D variant. He's too huge too fit on the platform you fight on, instead hovering around the edge, so you can only attack his face, or his hands if he misses punching you. It's almost like fighting Giant Baby Bowser from Yoshi's Island.
• Big Bad: He's the cause behind the demon outbreak.
• Boss Banter
• Breath Weapon: Can breathe fire at Gene.
• Clean Dub Name: SATAN in Japan; Demon King Angra everywhere else.
• Dark Is Evil: His pitch-black hide is symbolic of his evil nature.
• Elemental Powers: Playing with Fire.
• Evil Sounds Deep: Has a deep voice to go with his status as the demon king.
• Eye Beams: Utilizes these in the battle against him.
• Glowing Eyes of Doom: He has bright red eyes, and is the king of demons.
• Hand Blast: Can shoot fire from his hands.
• Hellish Pupils: Has slit pupils that reflect his demon heritage.
• Hijacked by Ganon: Hid in Azel's left arm which acts as a catalysis to invade the human realm.
• Mook Maker: He can summon demons from his mouth, but don't worry: by this point, you're super powerful, and they only take a few hits.
• Obviously Evil
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: His red eyes show just how evil and dangerous he is.
• Satan
• Spell My Name with an "S": In Japan, he is 'SATAN', not 'Satan'.
• Throat Light: His throat glows bright red.

"Those who possess this power (the God Hands) are capable of becoming either god or demon."

The Three Evil Stooges

A trio of demons serving the Four Devas, they are comprised of Felix (the horned brute), Bruce (thin guy in green) and Conchita (she whips it good). Felix is the one who severed Gene's arm. Once Gene gains the God Hand, he believes a little payback is in order.

Associated tropes:

• Ambiguously Human: Well, Conchita is eventually revealed to be a demon, but it's not clear if that's true for Felix and Bruce.
• Bald of Evil: Bruce.
• Battle Boomerang: Bruce carries a giant boomerang.
• Beard of Evil: Felix.
• Boomerang Comeback: If you attack Bruce after he throws his boomerang, this will happen to you at least once.
• The Brute: Felix.
• Bullfight Boss: Felix. He even has bull horns and howls like one.
• Dominatrix: Conchita.
• Drop the Hammer: Felix wear spiked maces over his hands.
• Dual Boss: Or Trio Boss, depending on when they're fought. The first time they take on Gene, they have one member fight him at a time. The second time, two to three of them fight you at once.
• Dumb Muscle: Felix.
• Goldfish Poop Gang: While a reoccurring threat that can kick Gene's teeth in if the player is careless, they do not actually get any stronger.
• It's Personal: Some time in the past, Bruce and Felix were harassing Olivia. Gene, pre-God Hand, tried to step, only to get his arm cut-off.
• Kill One, and the Others Get Stronger: Downplayed. In the first fight, Conchita stays out until Felix and Bruce are beaten. In the second fight, if one is beaten, she helps the other, a clear advantage to that one.
• Lean and Mean: Bruce.
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: As above, Felix and Bruce as responsible for making Gene the God Hand.
• Power Fist: Felix has spiked steel balls for his hands.
• Terrible Trio: Their official title is The Three Evil Stooges.
• Wake Up Call Boss: The second Boss Battle with them is likely where the game as a whole gets its Nintendo Hard reputation. It's not an easy fight, and it just gets worse from there on.
• Whip It Good: Conchita.
• You Have Failed Me...: Azel kills Bruce, Felix and Conchita after failing to kill Gene a second time.
  • Although it's unclear if it's this trope, or if Azel just killed them because they were in his way.

Other

Mr. Gold and Mr. Silver

Gene runs into these.... flamboyant twins early in Stage One. They apparently work for Elvis and will make passes at Gene during their battle.

• Ass Kicks You: One of their attacks is to scoot towards you, ass-first.
• Battle Couple: It's unclear if they're actually a couple, but a few of their attacks are preceded by thrusting their pelvises in each others direction, which strongly suggests they are at least lovers.
• Camp Gay: They speak in very feminine voices, they are prone to yelling "Here I come~!" before attacking, and their outfits include feathers.
• Combination Attack: They have two. The first where one will hang from the other's shoulders, and they spin uncontrollably around the arena. The other is an unblockable grab where one of them will throw Gene back, and the other will spike him into onto the floor.
• Dual Boss: Further reinforcing their educational role in the game, they will show how fighting more than one man at a time is exponentially harder than a one-on-one.
• Hard Gay: Their outfits also include biker-esque attire.
• Manly Gay: They are also extremely talented fighters, and are seriously buff.
• "Wake-Up Call" Boss: If you haven't realized that the game is Nintendo Hard yet, these guys will have no problem demonstrating it to you.

The Mad Midget Five

A group of sentai-themed little people all named after card suits (Joker/Diamond/Club/Spade/Hearts).

• Affectionate Parody: Of the Super Sentai.
• Asskicking Pose: They are prone to doing this.
• Frickin' Laser Beams: They can fire them from the crests on their helmets.
• Incredibly Lame Pun: How they introduce themselves.
  • "You can find me at the Club!"
• Recurring Boss: They show up twice. The second time they have a few upgrades... which barely helps them at all, considering that Gene has also been getting stronger.
• Theme Naming: They are named after card suits, except their leader, who is named 'Joker'.
• Wolfpack Boss: There's five of them, and they are far more dangerous with at least four fighters than they are with three or less.

Gorilla Mask

A gorilla in a luchador suit. The gorilla bit is also a costume.

Associated tropes:

• Malevolent Masked Ape
• Ninja Pirate Robot Zombie: He's a Luchador Gorilla. Examining him after the fight reveals a zipper on the back, indicating there is at least one more layer, and then consider that demons in this game typically disguise themselves as humans...
• Power-Up Food: He sometimes does a dance to summon a weak enemy, who in turn, gives him a banana and runs off. You can take the banana before he eats it for health.
• Wrestler in All of Us: Invoked. He's actually a luchador.

Psychic Midget

A highly paranoid telekinetic midget who picked the wrong game to appear in.

Associated tropes:

• Dishing Out Dirt: His primary attack is telekinetically throwing boulders around the room.
• Mind Over Matter: He has the power of telekinesis, using it to fling boulders at Gene, or pick him up and slam him into the ground.

Great Sensei

Master swordsman fond of sending his student after Gene and appearing through teleporting doors. Can clone himself.

Associated tropes:

• Badass Grandpa: He's both elderly and a formidable fighter.
• Katanas Are Just Better: He wields a katana in battle.
• Me's a Crowd

Dr. Ion

A clunky old robot with a pet bird and the 5th(?) Deva. Usually is plugged into a charger, but later upgrades to... a back-mounted Battery!

Associated tropes:

• The Quiet One
• Sixth Ranger: Or Fifth Deva, in this case. If he defeats Gene, he gets a spot among the Devas. The other members consider him too weak to achieve either.
• This Is a Drill: One of his attacks.

Ravel and Debussy

"The rock duo from hell", supposedly they sold their souls to the demons in order to gain great musical talent. Seems to not have worked so well. Ravel is the skinny guy who wields an electricity-shooting guitar. Debussy is the big guy who carries a drum set attached to his body, beatboxes, and sends shockwaves at Gene. They have another guitarist, but he's really just a palette swap of Ravel.

Associated tropes:

• Dual Boss: The second time you fight Ravel, he fights alongside Debussy.
• Face Heel Turn: Like Azel, they are humans who sided with the demons for power.
• No Name Given: The second guitarist.
• Optional Boss: The second guitarist will only appear if you check the bodies of Azel and Debussy after defeating them.
• The Power of Rock: One of Ravel's attacks involves him shooting electric balls at Gene with his guitar.
• Shock and Awe: Ravel.
• Theme Naming: Named after a pair of classical composers.
