The Protagonists and their companions

Hero / Yuusha

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

The male lead protagonist. A young and powerful human warrior, he came to the Demon World to end the evil of the demons by killing their leader, the Demon Queen. Instead, he learns the harsh reality: the Human/Demon war was never a battle between Good and Evil, but a period of turmoil where weak, innocent humans and demons both are oppressed and taken advantage of by the corrupt and powerful from each side. Wishing to end the war the right way with the least repercussions, he agrees to become the Demon Queen's ally in her plans to stop the war.

  • Badass: The Hero is basically unstoppable, and every fight he takes part in rapidly becomes a Curb Stomp Battle in his favour. This includes battles against entire armies.
    • Submissive Badass - To the Demon Queen The one he swore loyalty to at least, as he had no problems fighting her after a Demonic Possession incident turned her genuinely evil temporarily.
  • Black and White Morality: The Hero use to believe that the humans were good, demons were bad and he can solve the world's problems by defeating the Demon Queen but...
    • Character Development: he later realize how naive he was and starts to wise up and gets rid of his earlier misconceptions.
  • Black Knight: After wearing the Demon Armor given to him by the Demon Queen, he becomes the Dark Knight, her enforcer in the Demon world.
  • Book Dumb: While he admits he never had a proper education until the church taught him, he's still smart enough to know about human politics, and is willing to learn new things.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Hero's strength reaches unreal levels, and it shows he just trained really hard for it.
  • Chaste Hero: He's somewhat dense over the Demon Queen's advances to him, and is sometimes shy about it.
    • He even calls a "Strategic Retreat" (with great panic) while using teleport magic to get away when Fire Dragon Grand Princess (suggestively) invites him to "escort her" back to her "lavish hotel room".
    • He explicitly states himself to be a virgin on one occasion ... and when Witch Girl is irked with him, she sometimes makes a point of calling him "stupid virgin."
  • The Dragon: As the Dark Knight, he's the Demon Queen's Dragon and enforcer in the Demon world.
  • Dark Is Not Evil - As the Dark Knight
  • Magic Knight: Is not only a good swordsman but a magic user as well, for instance teleporting so casually that short-range teleports are part of his way of dodging in a sword fight.
  • The Hero: Duh!
  • Hero Incognito: To protect his reputation and hide the fact he was the Hero who fought the Demon Queen, he goes by the title "The White Swordsman".
  • Heroes Want Redheads: More like "Hero got himself a Redheaded Demon Queen".
  • Heroes Prefer Swords
  • Knight in Shining Armour: He truly is a good guy and wants to help the world hence why he's willing to work with the Demon Queen since she can end the war peacefully with the least repercussions.
  • Large Ham: Tends to ham it up as the Dark Knight.
  • Lightning Bruiser
  • Like A Married Couple: Since the Hero and the Demon Queen belong to each other, he is technically her "husband". They even act like a married couple. A sweet, (mostly) innocent, wide-eyed married couple.
  • One-Man Army: Was able to infiltrate the Demon Queen's castle and fought her minions all by himself! Later it is stated that no matter how many, or which army the Hero may face, he will win against it.
    • When rescuing Fairy Queen from the Black Wolf Forces, he took down entire companies—all by himself, of course. The Wolves were shocked. Then Fairy Queen warned of the dangerous Demon Wolf General, not knowing that Hero Dark Knight had defeated him (paralyzed him with magic and then knocked him cold with a forehead flick) moments before. When she learned, she was astonished, but told him that the Black Wolf King was even more powerf--

Dark Knight: I defeated him too. Last week.
Fairy Queen: EEH?! What in the world are you?

  • The Paladin: A non-religious type. While he does believe in the Spirit of Light, he's not as religious as Lady Knight.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: When told to make a "flashy" display of his powers, he vaporized approximately half of a nearby mountain. It took him about five seconds.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type 1 before he met the Demon Queen.
  • World's Strongest Man: Butler says the hero might well be the strongest warrior in the world.

「Demon Queen/ Demon King / Maou」, 「Ruby Eye / Kougyoku no Hitomi」, 「Crimson Scholar / Kurenai no Gakushi」

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu

The female lead protagonist. The 43rd ruler of the Demon World and the youngest to rule by demon standards, she is a powerful sorceress but has no experience in battle. Wise and smart, her vast knowledge comes from the "Exterior Library", a hidden dimension where knowledge of the past and future is kept and where her clan lived. Despite her knowledge, she is considered incompetent by the warmongering demon clans. Seeing what would happen to the war if it's ended without fixing the problems it caused, she awaited the arrival of the Hero so she could ask for his help to end war the right way. After finally getting him as her ally, she and the Hero travel to the Human world where she takes the identity of the Crimson Scholar, a human noble who has come to help the lower classes.

  • Adorkable: Can be lovably awkward around Hero.
  • Badass - She has her moments, especially when she's briefly turned evil via Demonic Possession.
    • Badass Pacifist - While she's not a very good fighter and knows it, she has stood her ground during negotiations where one wrong move would result in death and/or injury to herself and other without flinching once.
  • Butt Monkey: In the 4-Koma manga.
  • Buxom Is Better: Averted, she thinks her breasts aren't attractive. No matter what just about all the men she meets tell her.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Thinks she's not pretty because she focused on her studies rather than on beauty. However...
  • I Have Many Names: Demon Queen, Ruby Eye to Demons, Crimson Scholar to Humans.
  • Lady in Red: As often as possible.
  • Lady of Black Magic
  • Like A Married Couple: Since the Hero and the Demon Queen belongs to each other, she is technically his "wife". They even act like a married couple.
  • Minored in Asskicking
  • The Missus and the Ex: The Demon Queen is the "Missus". Unluckily for the Hero, both she and Lady Knight quickly become friends.
  • Ms. Fanservice: No matter what she thinks.
  • No Except Yes: In the anime, when Head Maid refers to Demon Queen and Hero as married, they tell her they aren't...

Demon Queen: A contract of mutual possession for an unlimited duration.
Head Maid: That's what marriage is.
Demon Queen: It's the difference between a clover and a trifolium repens.
Head Maid (laughing): They're the same thing. (She is, of course, correct, as Demon Queen should've known)

Head Maid / Meido Chou

Voiced by: Chiwa Saitou

The Demon Queen's head maid who has been taking care of her since she was young.

  • Battle Butler: The Head Maid lists bodyguard duties and leading armies among her responsibilities as a maid.
  • Expy: Resembles Emma the Maid from Victorian Romance Emma.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she takes her duty as the Head Maid seriously and looks down on anyone who doesn't do their job well, she does have a soft heart, as shown when she hired the runaway serf sisters to be her assistant maids.
  • Meganekko
  • Ninja Maid
  • Operation: Jealousy: In one manga adaptation, she tries to persuade Hero and Demon Queen to take a bath together. When they both protest, she responds that in that case, she will bathe with Hero. Stunned, he can't help but picture her with her hair let down, taking off her glasses ... despite Censor Steam, it's clear she's already taken off everything else...

Demon Queen: What are you imagining, Hero?! I'll never allow it! Ever!

Maid Sisters / Meido Shimai

Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu (Big Sister / Ane) Nao Tōyama (Little Sister / Imouto)

Two human sisters who were formerly Serfs who ran away from their lord's land due to a lack of food and harsh conditions. After being found at the Demon Queen's mansion, Head Maid wanted them to be returned but the Hero wanted them to stay so a compromise was reached where the girls became maids in the household. The older sister is called Big Maid Sister (Meido Ane) while the younger sister is called Little Maid Sister (Meido Imouto).

  • Call Back: That ring Demon Queen gave Big Maid Sister in Chapter 12 (Comp Ace manga), that let her impersonate Crimson Scholar. She still has it in Chapter 44, when she's traveling in the Demon World. Very useful, for getting past guards, to take on the appearance of their queen....
  • Children Are Innocent: Little Maid Sister.
  • Happily Adopted: Thanks to Hero, Demon Queen and Head Maid, the Sisters' lives are much better than their old life as serfs.
  • Supreme Chef/Team Chef: Little Maid Sister’s obsession with food has led to her becoming this, including creating new recipes. Humans and demons alike start to drool when they merely smell her cooking. Then they take a bite, their eyes go wide, and it’s “om nom nom”...
  • Taught By Experience: The Sisters understand very well about being poor with no food, unlike those who haven't gone through it.
  • Take a Third Option: Noble Youngster appointed Big Maid Sister to take charge of some leaderless mercenaries. Her first tactical decision, they challenged, had to be a question of fighting or fleeing the Holy Key Legionnaires. The Third Option she came up with was successful enough that the troops accepted her as their new commander.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Big Maid Sister, while posing as Crimson Scholar and shackled for what was meant to be public humiliation followed by execution, gave a Rousing Speech that led to the crowd throwing stones not at her, but at her captors. And then Winter King personally parried the executioner's sword. She triggered rebellion against the Corrupt Church with nothing more than words. She's come a long way from the serf tearfully hiding in a stable. Note that while the crowd thought she was Crimson Scholar, their benefactor, Winter King knew the truth (see WMG).

Lady Knight / Onna Kishi

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro

A former Crusader and one of the Hero's ex-companions. After the Hero left his companions to face the Demon Queen alone, she retired as a nun back to her home village. After reuniting with the Hero, she becomes a knight again to help the Hero and the Demon Queen.

  • A-Cup Angst: Especially with the Butler teasing her about it. She also finds Crimson Scholar's bosom "annoying."
  • Action Girl
  • Badass
  • Berserk Button: Whenever the Hero abandons her. Also telling her that women can't fight is a bad idea. And don't mention her small brea--
  • Church Militant/Warrior Nun: A former member of the Holy Sliver Crown Knights.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: After her successful Aurora Island campaign, Lady Knight finds she's accumulated quite a few female fans.
  • Hair of Gold
  • Iron Lady: Badass, thy name is Lady Knight.
  • Jeanne D'Archetype
  • Jumped At the Call: Accepted Winter King's offer to become the new Supreme Commander of the Southern Kingdoms Forces.
  • Keep the Reward: After the news the Hero wounded the Demon Queen, the United Kingdoms Headquarters offered the Hero's companions rewards and important positions. Lady Knight refused their offers and rewards as it was insulting and felt like stealing the efforts of the Hero's work.
  • Lightning Bruiser
  • Magic Knight
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: "Knight of the Demon Mask", "Superhuman Princess" and "Female Assassin of Stone-Wall Iris".
  • The Not-Secret: Was already aware about the Demon Queen's true identity (after forcing the truth out of Hero) before the Demon Queen confessed the truth to her. Even after the confession, Lady Knight remains her friend.
  • The Lancer: To the Hero.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Lady Knight is the "Ex". Unluckily for the Hero, both she and the Demon Queen quickly become friends.
  • The Paladin: She's exactly like the Hero except she's more religious in the Spirit of Light religion.
  • Saintly Church: A member of a religious order trying to help the poor and helpless.
  • Translation Style Choices: Woman Knight to Lady Knight, although some translations keeps the plain original name.

Witch Girl / Onna Mahou Tsukai

One of the Hero's ex-companions and the group's mage. Not is much known about her except that she was a skilled wizard with bad social skills but a love for books. Despite appearing Stoic, Witch Girl cared about the Hero. After the Hero was reported missing in the Demon World after his battle with the Demon Queen, she went to the Demon World to find the Hero herself and learn some new spells along the way. She's also the Heroine of the Spin-Off Manga Gaiden in Monthly Shonen Sirius. According to the Comp Ace manga, she's herself a Demon of the same clan as Demon Queen; some of the other portrayals explicitly contradict this.

  • Bookworm: Loves books about magic and...
  • Cute Witch
  • Hot Witch at one point in the Comp Ace manga. Despite looking childlike in most respects, a Hot Springs Episode indicated she has a larger bust than Lady Knight.
  • I Will Find Hero: Her current quest.
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Her preferred nickname, she says, is "Pleasant Serial Killer."
  • Robe And Witch Hat
  • Seeker Archetype: While journeying through the Demon World, she's also learning the magics of the Demon clans. The Fairy Queen comments how talented Witch Girl is in magic.
  • Sleepyhead: One of her nicknames is "The Napping Sorceress." Napping in places such as Winter King's throne....
  • The Stoic: The way she seems most of the time, yet....
    • Not So Stoic: The fact she's searching for the Hero in the Demon World shows that she cares about him.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side: Well, no, not really evil, but when she needs to cast destructive magic she develops a ferocious look verging on maniacal bloodlust. The anime sometimes shows two other mages sitting or standing near her, with hints that they're not physically there, but her alternate personalities who take over for certain tasks. If that's correct, the one who handles combat seems to be almost perpetually angry....
  • Translation Style Choices: Because Witch Woman doesn't exactly fit her image.

The Southern Kingdoms

Winter Prince (Winter King) / Fuyu no Ouji (Fuyu Ou)

Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa

Prince of the Winter Nation.

Butler / Shitsuji, Archer / Kyuushi

Voiced by: Banjou Ginga

Was once known as Archer. Butler was one of the Hero's companions before the Hero's disappearance and went to become the Winter Prince's servant.

  • The Archer: Twisted with a statement that he's called Archer because his targets are struck down "as if they were pierced by an arrow"—but Lady Knight, at least, has never seen him with any weapon in his hand. Standing atop a tall pole, he simply gestures ... and several enemy soldiers fall, apparently spurting blood. So it seems he's some sort of wizard rather than a literal mundane archer. Either that or he's got a lot of unnoticeably small but especially effective shuriken.
  • Badass Grandpa: Fought alongside the Hero. The anime, at least, hints that he may have been Hero's guardian/tutor when Hero was a small boy.
  • Battle Butler: His current job.
  • Dirty Old Man: Likes to grope and make fun of Lady Knight's breasts. Comes back from the Demon World to report to Winter King ... and begins by dwelling on how many types of sexy female Demons there are.
  • The Jeeves
  • Names to Run Away From Really Fast: His nicknames include "Black Point Shooter" and "Sudden Death."
  • Ninja: In Maoyuu Maou Yuusha - Other Side of the Hill. This has also been seen in later chapters of the Comp Ace manga, when he led a group of spies to gather intelligence at the Demons' kurultai.[1]

Blizzard Queen / Hyousetsu no Joou

Voiced by: Mariko Fujii

Queen of the Ice Nation.

  • The High Queen
  • Reasonable Authority Figure
  • The Smurfette Principle: Among the council of Southern Kingdoms royalty, anyway, where it's one of her to three kings—until the Southern nations expand their membership, adding one more queen and four more male leaders. Considering how many of the series' major characters are powerful, forceful women, though, this trope is almost inverted for Maoyuu Maou Yuusha as a whole.

King Iron Fist / Tetsuwan Ou

Voiced by: Masanori Machida

King of the Iron Nation.

King White Night / Byakuya Ou

Voiced by: Masanori Machida

King of the White Night Nation. Formerly Supreme Commander of the Southern Kingdoms Forces before the 1st invasion of Aurora island failed which lead to the death of 6000 soldiers including the Winter King.

  • Dirty Coward: Ran away from battle to save his own skin, justifying it by saying he was royalty. And Winter King, whom he left behind, wasn't?
  • Green-Eyed Monster: To Winter King for his successful Aurora campaign and for being left out of the alliance between the Winter, Ice and Iron Nations.
  • Jerkass: Unlike the other leaders of the Southern Kingdoms, King White Night is a insensitive jerk who has no combat experience or leadership skills. He refuses to take responsibility when things go bad.
  • Killed Off for Real: Apparently, by Blue Demon Seal King when the Demons invaded White Night Nation.
  • The Neidermeyer
  • Never My Fault: Tries to blame his incompetent leadership and failure of the Aurora island invasion on the late Winter King.
  • Puppet King: He's nothing more than a puppet of the Central Nations.
  • We Have Reserves: His opinion of the soldiers fighting for them. He shows no sign of caring for non-wealthy civilians, either.

South Arctic General / Minami Kouri Shogun

Voiced by: Hiroshi Shirokuma

A giant demon Walrus who controls the Aurora island located south of the Southern Kingdoms. Both the Human Kingdoms and the Demon Queen want to reclaim Aurora island for different reasons respectively; it's a strategic position near the portal to the Demon world and has rich resources particular salt and fish for Fuyugoshi Village.

  • A Father to His Men: Despite his Blood Knight tendencies, he does care about his troops, ordering them to retreat after being surrounded by both the Winter Kingdom Forces and Crusaders. He's genuinely distressed when his loyal second-in-command is killed.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: He is one of the ten most powerful demons and leads three demon clans of Grand Clan Beast Fang.
  • Blade on a Stick: His weapon is a harpoon.
  • Blood Knight: He cares more about fighting than obeying the Demon Queen's orders.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He dies congratulating Lady Knight for defeating him.
  • Handicapped Badass: Has a peg-leg in Maoyuu Maou Yuusha - Other Side of the Hill.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy
  • Sea Monster: Most of his followers are different sea creatures like sharks, tortoises and krakens.

The Merchants Union

The Merchants Union is a large organization in charge with the Southern Kingdoms war effort. Despite being the official war supplier for the humans, the Union has no loyalty to the human kingdoms and are only helping them for the money. The Union is a very powerful organization and to ensure they stay on top, they'll eliminate anyone who threatens their power. Their motto is: "Thou shall be a merchant before a human, Thou shall be a merchant before a faithful servant of the Church." Basically, they're Ferengis.

Young Merchant / Seinen Shounin

Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya

The head of a trio of merchants in charge of supplying the Southern Kingdoms war effort.

  • Affably Evil: He's a very charming man and is willing to compensate you if you sell your invention's rights to the Union. But if you refuse....
  • Rousseau Was Right: Despite his belief in making money no matter what, he is won over by the Crimson Scholar's wish to help end the War by peaceful means. Her altruistic ways convinces the Young Merchant to agree to help her plant corn at the other nations.
    • The Comic Clear manga shows Young Merchant, before meeting Crimson Scholar, being disgusted by the idea that money was all that was important—and wishing he could find some more worthy cause.
  • Badass Bureaucrat: Asks for the Archduke Fire Dragon's surrender, admits upfront he needs it because there is no way in hell he'd ever win in actual fight, then lays out a trade proposal that would literally be idiotic for the Archduke Fire Dragon to screw up lest his people suffer unless he cares more about his own pride, and manages to bloodlessly get the Archduke Fire Dragon to knuckle under.
  • Sadistic Choice: An expert in these.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: After making a deal for buying the Crimson Scholar's Sea Compass rights and in exchange for the Union to plant and grow Corn at the other nations, the Young Merchant admits he's smitten by her intellect and makes a marriage proposal to her. Naturally, she refuses but he insists he'll try again. Too bad for him, she's already in love with someone else.
    • The Comp Ace manga adaptation shows him confronting Archduke Fire Dragon and declaring "I am here to defeat you." Young Merchant and the Archduke's daughter have formed an alliance of sorts; the implication is that this challenge is a way of asking for her hand in marriage. Rather than actually fight, he negotiates a trade agreement benefiting both sides. Her father grins and says, "I lost."

Shrewd Treasurer / Ratsuwan Kaikei

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana

The Young Merchant's assistant.

Middle Aged Merchant / Chuunen Shounin

Voiced by:Yuichi Nagashima aka Cho

The Young Merchant's mentor.

  • Big Fun: His looks in the Comp Ace version.
  • Depending on the Artist: In the Comp Ace version, he is portrayed as an older fat man. In the Comic Clear version, he is portrayed as a thin, middle aged man. The only thing common between the two is that the Middle Aged Merchant has Arabian style clothes.
  • Translation Style Choices: Middle Aged can also mean Aged.

Grand Clans of the Demon World

There are over 40 Demon Clans (and even more sub-clans), but at the start of the story, only eight Grand Clans whose leaders form the Council at Kurultai. Demon Queen addresses these eight leaders collectively as "Khans."

Archduke Fire Dragon / Hiryuu Taikou

Voiced by: Masashi Hirose

A Fire Dragon and leader of the demon Dragon Clan.

  • Cool Old Guy
  • Honor Before Reason: He initially insists on his forces on reclaiming Gateway City despite the Demon Queen's wishes to have the Dark Knight handle that.
  • Hot-Blooded: Not surprisingly since he's a Fire Dragon.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: The Dragon clan believes in honor and respect those who keep their promises.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: According to the East Fortress General, who asks him for a truce to keep civilians on both sides from getting hurt.

Grand Princess Fire Dragon / Hiryuu Kimijou

Voiced by: Shizuka Ito

Archduke's Fire Dragon daughter and Princess of the Dragon Clan.

  • Cute Monster Girl
  • Standard Hero Reward: Should the Dark Knight succeed in reclaiming Gateway City, the Archduke will give away his daughter to him as his wife/mistress/whatever. That's gonna be awkward for the Dark Knight/Hero.
  • The Dragon's Hot Daughter: Her dad's a dragon but she looks like a human. It sorta justified since they're demons.
  • Translation Style Choices: Great to Grand, it achieves a certain glamour.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Calm, steadfast belief in her father's victory—and even when he lost, she's perfectly willing to become the Dark Knight's wife/whatever if he reclaims Gateway City, no real questions asked ... (though she does seem to be looking forward to it). Knowing who her father is, she's probably quite the fighter too.
    • Although she told Young Merchant that her mother taught her a "clever woman" solves her own problems, but a "wise woman" coaxes her man to solve problems for her, and thus she profits more than the clever one.

Fairy Queen / Yousei Joou

A fairy and Queen of the Fairy Clan.

  • Cute Monster Girl
  • Damsel in Distress: Was kept prisoner by the rebellious Black Wolf Clan before being rescued by the Dark Knight.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: After being rescued, she accepts that Dark Knight will give a stern warning to the Black Wolf Clan not to rebel again; she holds no grudges against them and doesn't want them punished any more.

Ogre Princess Shrine Maiden / Oniyobi-no-Himemiko

Head of Ogre Clan, which is apparently based on Oni, with either one or two horns jutting from the forehead and a generally Japanese look to their clothing and accessories. Demon Queen describes them as the "most versatile" clan, in particular having some very powerful magicians.

Blue Demon King / Souma-Ou

Ruler of Blue Demon Clan. This clan is possibly based on Djinni, which are often depicted as being blue-skinned. They tend to have an Arabian Nights style in clothing and weapons. They're a Proud Warrior Race, with the emphasis on "race" as in Fantastic Racism, and "most active in advocating an invasion of the Human World. They are extremely highbrow, and definitely the most difficult to deal with."

Blue Demon Seal (alternatively Sigil) King / Souma-no-Kokuin-Ou

Blue Demon King's son, and a claimant to the position of Demon Lord.

  • I Can Rule Alone
  • Killed Off for Real: Despite his power, he was vulnerable to Church magic and shot down by massed muskets. While helpless, he was found by a human mercenary who wasn’t interested in taking a prisoner.
  • Mark of the Beast: Has the sigil, or seal, of the Demon Lords glowing in his eyes. Both eyes, which shocked the leaders of other Clans, because never before had any candidate for rule had more than one sigil.
  • Self-Made Orphan

Duke Silver Tiger / Ginko-kou

Leads Beast Fang Clan, composed of several types of predatory Petting Zoo People. They, or at least the land-dwelling varieties, like to build mountain castles rather than live in cities, and demand several square kilometers of hunting ground for each member of the clan. So they were interested in new habitats in the Human World -- "Lebensraum"—and that was their reason for supporting the war. South Arctic General and his forces, as well as the Black Wolf Clan who’d kidnapped Fairy Queen, were/are part of this clan.

  • The Atoner
  • Hot-Blooded
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: It doesn’t seem like it at first, but after he found out the dishonorable methods Blue Demon Seal King was using to usurp the throne ... and that a member of Beast Fang was part of it, he became The Atoner—and surprisingly clever at peaceful solutions.
  • Taking the Bullet: He literally threw himself between Demon Queen and a musket volley. He survived, saying he’s vowed not to die until he’s saved her life at least three times.
  • Worthy Former Opponent: He and King Iron Fist acknowledge each other as fellow Proud Warrior Race Guys. When the King couldn’t yet bring himself to eat and drink with Demons even after a joint battle against a mutual enemy, but nonetheless ordered that Beast Fang troops be given supplies and medical attention, the Duke told his warriors to lift their spears in salute. "The soul of our clan has found solace!"

Patterned Chief (alternatively Tattooed Chief) / Mon’you no Osa

Leads Humanoid Clan, described as the largest population of demons, and including many subgroups. Demon Queen says they tend to look enough like humans that they can pass as such with relatively little disguise needed. "Individually ... they are very good at quickly adapting to new and different situations."

  • True Neutral: So he says, anyway. His outrage when he sees that Seal King intends to subvert the power structure’s customs and laws and rule as a tyrant suggests more Lawful Neutral.

General Blue Iron / Hekikou-Taishou

Leads or at least represents Machine Clan. They look like Magitek Robots, but are actually wearing Powered Armor, and originally supported the war because they’re interested in the Human World’s mineral resources. Hero once pried a member of this clan out of the armor, presumably after defeating her, and discovered that one, at least, looked like a petite girl (Demon Queen accused him of getting close to other women again).

Earl Giant / Kyojin Haku

Head of Giant Clan. Demon Queen indicates they’re literally Gentle Giants; "...they have a line they never cross. They never go further than to a defensive threat. If you talk to them for a while, you’ll find that they are quite timid and genuinely honest." Unfortunately, their Fairy Tales are full of innocent Giants being tricked and Made a Slave by unscrupulous humans.

  • Mighty Glacier: Speaks this way, at least, with significant pauses between words. It’s not made clear how much faster he can move when fighting is necessary.

Gateway City

Demon Girl / Mazoku Musume

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui

A demon waitress who works in a human bar. Later becomes something of a protégé and aide to Grand Princess Fire Dragon.

East Fortress General / Higashi no Saishou

Voiced by: Kenta Miyake

The leader of the human mercenary armies that guard a fortress outside Gateway city. Unlike his Commanding officer, the General treats demons with respect and dignity.

  • Know When to Fold'Em: He peacefully surrenders Gateway city to the Demons in order to protect his men and the humans living there.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: The General treats demons with respect and defends Demon Girl from a group of harassing human soldiers.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In order to protect the human citizens of Gateway City, he refuses to join the Holy Crusaders' Commander in abandoning it. He's willing to use peaceful, diplomatic solutions to keep humans and demons at peace.
    • He later becomes chief of the "Gateway City Demon Clan" -- which includes humans.

Lieutenant General / Rikushou

The East Fortress General's Second-in-command.

Commander / Shirei-kan

The leader of the Holy Crusaders that control Gateway city. He is also the White Night King's nephew, and is just like his uncle.

  • Dirty Coward: Like his uncle. He abandons Gateway city rather than protecting it, and sacrifices his men to the retreating demons of Aurora island in order to escape.
  • Fantastic Racism: Hates demons very much and sees humans who associate with demons as traitors.
  • Hypocrite: Claims his "Holy" Crusaders would never associate with filthy demons despite the fact his men are spending time with (which often means raping) female demons.
  • Killed Off for Real: He tries to murder the Maid Sisters, but Warrior Youngster defends them. The Commander finds out the fatal way that Warrior Youngster has Taken a Level in Badass as well as in Kindness.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Because he abandoned Gateway city and then sacrificed his Crusader's lives to escape Aurora island, he's arrested and brought to the Holy Kings Land capital for trial. While imprisoned, he loses an eye, apparently in an attack by rats. It seems to be averted for a while when he's given command of his uncle's troops to invade Iron Nation.
  • Like Uncle, Like Nephew: Like his uncle, he's also a jerkass and coward.
  • The Neidermeyer: He's fooled into following the Dark Knight/Hero in circles, so that by the time the Crusaders reach Aurora island, Winter Nation troops are already attacking South Arctic General's forces. The retreating demons easily decimate the exhausted Crusaders.
    • On the other hand, he shows tactical cleverness when leading White Night forces to invade Iron Nation. Good against ordinary humans, it seems; not so much against magic.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Due to the Hero and the Fairies giving nightmarish illusions to him and his men, the Commander goes nuts and decides to abandon Gateway City and its citizens. He heads back to Aurora island, claiming his troops will help reclaim it.

Others

Youngster Trio / Sanbugassou Shitei

Voiced by: Suzuki Tatsuhisa (Warrior Youngster / Gunjin Shitei), Yuuki Kaji (Noble Youngster / Kizoku Shitei), Takuma Terashima (Merchant Youngster / Shounin Shitei)

Three teenage boys from Fuyugoshi Village from three different backgrounds. The three are the frequent students of Lady Knight and Demon Queen in their classes about economics, farming, swordsmanship, etc. In truth, the lessons they learn are showing them how there's nothing glorious or good about the Human/Demon War but how nasty it is and its effects on the people and society.
Eventually Merchant Youngster becomes Winter Nation's Finance Minister, Noble Youngster carries out diplomatic missions mostly for Ice Nation -- and also negotiating with Young Merchant, and Warrior Youngster defends Iron Nation against an attack, reminding his outnumbered troops that they're not fighting for glory, but protecting their homes and families. They kick butt. He also saves the Maid Sisters' lives.

  • As You Know: They provide a point of view to certain situations according to their backgrounds.
  • Genre Deconstruction: Every time they say something they think is great and good about the war, their teachers teach them how wrong their beliefs are.
  • Naive Newcomers
  • Only Sane Man: The Merchant Youngster seems to have comparatively more sense than the other two.
  • Straw Character: Warrior Youngster initially believes women shouldn't be warriors, thinks everyone should devote themselves for the war effort no matter the price, and thinks starvation doesn't exist—or it's a person's own fault if they're starving. It's no surprise Lady Knight, Demon Queen and Big Sister Maid have something to say about those views.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Much to their teachers' frustrations (Demon Queen and Lady Knight), it takes time for the trio to learn why war is bad for the people and economy and let go of their old beliefs.
  • Those Three Guys
  • Translation Style Choices: Soldier Youngster to Warrior Youngster, although this is a real change, not a choice since Gunjin does not translate to warrior at all.
  • War Is Glorious: The Warrior Youngster especially thinks this at first. Their teachers eventually managed to beat this out of them.

Builder Youngster / Doboku Shitei

A member of the Ogre Clan, he was taught by Demon Queen shortly before the story begins. He and Minstrel Youngster are friends and possibly something more; they refer to themselves collectively as the “Crimson Disciples.” Currently building a bridge between the Human and Demon Worlds, in a contract with Middle-Aged Merchant.

  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Minstrel Youngster is about the same height as Big Maid Sister, so she’s not actually “tiny.” But when Builder Youngster is sitting on the ground and she stands alongside him, she has to lift her elbow above her shoulder height to lean it on his shoulder. His head looks about the size of her torso.
  • I Will Wait for You

Minstrel Youngster / Souga Shitei

A member of the Forest Song Clan, "descendants of the ancient Alfar," she was taught by Demon Queen shortly before the story begins. She and Builder Youngster are friends and possibly something more; they refer to themselves collectively as the “Crimson Disciples.” Visiting the Human World, she quickly became close enough friends with Big Maid Sister to reveal to the Human girl that she’s a Demon.

  • Cute Monster Girl
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Her songs are good for making people feel mellow and not like fighting. She’s determined to use them that way. “If 100 people were to raise their sword, then I would stop those 100 swords with my song.”
  • Pointy Ears: Well, elf, yeah. Usually hidden by her headdress.

The Third Crusade

Prince Marshal / Outei Gensui

The younger brother of the King of Holy Kings Land (where the Church of the Spirit of Light is headquartered). He’s acquired the secret of firearms, apparently by torturing an artisan who’d been making them for Crimson Scholar. He was party to the corrupt deal between Church officials and the Blue Demon Clan, intended to assure Church dominance of the Human World by giving them Demons as a constant enemy. He now commands the Third Holy Key Legionnaires, a new crusade against the Demons, and has betrayed the pact, attacking the Blue Demons as well as the Southern Kingdoms’ humans they were fighting.

  • General Badass: Equipping his army with muskets, he makes a point of practicing with the weapon himself, even when it’s still a bit experimental and thus dangerous to the user, because only by knowing the musket’s capabilities firsthand will he be able to properly judge how to use troops armed with it.
  • Beard of Evil
  • Blonde Guys Are Evil
  • Stupid Evil: Averted hard, hard, HARD. He is dangerously intelligent.
  • We Have Reserves: Why he likes muskets: they’re so much easier and quicker to learn than the bow, meaning he can put together much larger armies faster.

Archbishop / Daikyoushuu

Despite the title, he’s the Spirit of Light Church equivalent of the Pope.

  • Church Militant: Death to all who don’t follow his Church.
  • Corrupt Church: Gave his blessing to the Church’s cynical deal with the Blue Demon Clan.
  • Creepy Souvenir: He’s acquired the eyes of the late Blue Demon Seal King -- with the sigil still glowing in them.
  • Mad Oracle: He seems to have some genuine prophetic powers, but rambles a lot and not always understandably.

Lily Knight Brigade Captain / (Japanese version unknown at present)

A cast list given in the manga says she “swears absolute loyalty to the teachings of the Holy Light Church and the Archbishop.”

Blue Ash King (or Green Ash King) / (Japanese version unknown at present)

Young king of Mist Kingdom. First seen as an unnamed subordinate of the Prince Marshal, first identified almost twenty (manga) chapters later.

  • General Badass: In the chapter which gives his name, he's discussing the new army with Prince Marshal, and makes suggestions for more effective use of the musket-armed troops.

  1. "Kurultai" is a Mongol word for a political and military council -- which is indeed what the Demons are holding.
