Characters debuting in the original F-Zero
#07 Captain Falcon (Douglas Jay Falcon)
The main character of the F-Zero franchise and probably the most well known, thanks to Super Smash Bros.. Captain Falcon is a bounty hunter from Port Town in his mid 30's who's said to be one of the best bounty hunters in the universe. He lives on a chain of islands off the coast of Port Town (with F-Zero tracks of their own for practice) and lives in solitude due to the number of enemies he's made from bounty hunting. He is also seen having a small facility in Mute City in GX where he trains via virtual reality.
His Machine is the Blue Falcon, rated B-C-B and weighing 1260kgs; its creator and engine(s) are unknown, adding further to the mystique of Falcon. It is considered to be the most well-rounded machine in the games it appears in. Its driving style is average too, so anyone playing could use it well. However, the Blue Falcon is usually ranked 10th or so in most of the races it appears in when controlled by AI. As a cameo, it has appeared in many a Nintendo game, most notably Mario Kart Wii as a lightweight kart and several Animal Crossing games as a decoration.
- The Ace
- Adaptation Dye Job: Whereas the games showed that Falcon has black hair in the sporadic times he's seen without his helmet, the anime turns him into a brown-head.
- Aloof Ally: To any Good-aligned character in the series.
- A Friend in Need: F-Zero GX. Story Mode. Chapter 5. Jody Summer.
- Aloof Big Brother: Subverted. It's made clear that Falcon's actions towards Jody is a facade to ensure that she isn't caught in the crossfire.
- Animal-Themed Superbeing
- Animal Motifs: A falcon, duh.
- Badass: Is he ever.
- Adaptation Displacement: Fans of Super Smash Bros. will probably be disappointed to learn that F-Zero!Falcon and SSB!Falcon are two virtually different characters. Both are badasses in their own right, but this Falcon is a straight-laced, no-nonsense kind of guy, while his depiction in Smash is pure Camp.
- Back-to-Back Badasses: If he and Ryu/Rick are ever working in tandem, give up, right there.
- Badass Baritone: In the anime, provided by Hideyuki Tanaka (Japanese) and David Wills (English; you may know him better as Espio, Fergy Fudgehog, and Tyranno Hasselberry, not to mention Sirius Satellite Radio's DJ Ghosty).
- Badass Boast: To do this to the creators of the universe and back up his claim, it's pretty badass.
Captain Falcon: "Come off it! You think you can beat me? No way!!" |
- Badass Long Robe: As Berserker, The Dragon to Don Genie in the anime. Leads to an awesome Big Damn Heroes moment late in the series, complete with Flung Clothing.
- Becoming the Mask: Without the Captain Falcon facade, he's rather timid and a little silly.
- That's only in the anime, though.
- Big Brother Mentor/The Obi-Wan: Bart Lemming is this in regards to several characters, such as Ryu/Rick, Clank, and Jody. Ryu/Rick even calls him "basan." As Falcon, he serves as The Obi-Wan to Ryu/Rick, complete with an Obi-Wan Moment.
- Big Damn Heroes: Damn straight!
- Blue Oni: To Blood Falcon's Red Oni. They even wear the appropriate colors.
- In the anime, he serves as the Blue Oni to Ryu/Rick. Again, the color coding is played up.
- Bounty Hunter: When not on the track, which seems to be never.
- We do see him doing some bounty hunting work in the GX Story Mode, the second mission to be precise, in which he has managed to track down a group of criminals to the middle of the desert. This later turns out to be a trap set up by Goroh, which he, of course, uses to challenge Falcon to a race. The original game, however, did include a comic in which Falcon in fact did do his specified profession.
- Said comic also featured, to date, the only time in F-Zero history that Falcon has bothered to use his gun.
- Car Fu: His Final Smash in Brawl. Many fans are disappointed that he doesn't use his signature attack to finish his opponents.
- In some circles, that move is referred to as "Falcon Hit 'n' Run" and "Falcon Drunk Driving."
- Captain Space, Defender of Earth!: Subverted, in that despite being very hammy in the Super Smash Bros. games, and even having the look of these character types, he's actually a VERY effective hero and is a genuine defender of earth.
- Character Celebrity Endorsement: In-universe, Falcon was apparently featured in a commercial (with him uttering the final words, "Let's try.") that inspired Billy to join the races.
- Characterization Marches On: In the games, not much is known about Falcon other than his sense of justice. Super Smash Bros. then transforms the guy into a campy, over-the-top brawler with a Falcon Punch. The anime blends together these two depictions, using the best aspects of both personalities. They even give him the Falcon Punch in the Grand Finale.
- Chekhov MIA/Long-Lost Relative: In the anime, Captain Falcon/Bart Lemming is none other than Andy Summer, Jody's not quite dead older brother. Turns out that he survived his Heroic Sacrifice in her Backstory.
- Clothing Damage: In his GX ending movie, he saves Mrs. Arrow's baby from a speeding locomotive. Afterwards, his pants rip, revealing his Goofy Print Underwear. This leaves Falcon in an awkward and compromising position as Mrs. Arrow chuckles at his misfortune.
- The Comically Serious: Portrayed this way in GX.
- Cool Car: While it's not a car in the strictest sense, the Blue Falcon is one awesome ride.
- Even better; the Blue Falcon is such an incredible machine that its stats don't accurately describe its performance. A novice could drive it and appear to be a pro.
Samurai Goroh: "That's a fine looking machine you're driving, Falcon." |
- Cool Helmet
- Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Should you beat the GP on Master Class (F-Zero X) or beat the final chapter of Story Mode (F-Zero GX), you'll be treated to a brief shot of Falcon without his helmet.
- Cool Shades: As seen in his original design, which was reused for the Japanese commercial for X.
- Cool Starship: The Falcon Flyer, Falcon's ship which he uses for interplanetary travel.
- It makes a grand appearance in the anime with a sleek, new design for a Diving Save. It shows up a few more times after that.
- Falcon Punch: Duh.
- The Fettered: And how.
- The Good Captain
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Sports a scar on his left eyebrow. Anyone who has played the games should be able to deduce that Bart Lemming is Captain Falcon, as he has the same scar.
- The Hero
- The Hero Dies: In the anime. But Black Shadow be damned if Falcon isn't going to go out in style.
Captain Falcon: "The name "Captain Falcon" is a title given to those worthy of it. Ryu Suzaku... as of today, you are the new Captain Falcon." |
- Hideyuki Tanaka: See? Otacon did get to use the Falcon Kick too!
- Informed Loner: And yet, there is he is, trying to enjoying a drink in Mute City (Chapter 3 of GX's Story Mode) in the company of half of the cast. Heck, Jack even toasts to him upon arrival.
- Jack of All Stats: Even after several games, he still holds the title. He's more of a Lightning Bruiser in Super Smash Bros..
- Lantern Jaw of Justice
- Large Ham: In GX, along with everyone else.
- Legacy Character: In the anime.
- Let's Race Like Gentlemen: He tries to convince Black Shadow to lay off on their grudge until the Grand Prix. It doesn't work.
Captain Falcon: "Let's settle this at the Grand Prix. Not like this, it's the coward's way." |
- Also, he has a gun. He uses it in a comic that came with the first game. That's it. He handles it in GX, but never pulls it out against anyone, not even in Smash Bros.
- Meaningful Echo: After defeating Blood Falcon in Episode 30 of the anime, Falcon muses, "Only the one who has exceeded Falcon can become Falcon." This speech, in modified form, is brought up again in the Grand Finale, when Falcon relinquishes his title to Ryu/Rick. Doubles as Foreshadowing.
- Media Research Failure: "Dear IGN, his name is Captain Falcon. The Blue Falcon is the name of his vehicle. Love, the fans."
- Mysterious Past/Shrouded in Myth: Falcon is an enigma. What little facts that games disclose about him might not even be true. It is believed that he was born in Port Town, served as a member of the Internova Police Force alongside Goroh (hence his title of "Captain" and his rivalry with Goroh), and lives on a chain of islands off the coast of Port Town, a haven safe from his enemies (complete with racetracks so he can keep himself in peak condition).
Silver Neelson: "You're the famous Falcon?" |
- Mysterious Protector
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Both Jody and Clank quickly deduce that Bart Lemming is Captain Falcon, with Jody easily recognizing him as her brother Andy. Inverted with Berserker, whose identity Clank correctly guesses by analyzing and studying his racing strategy.
- Rage Against the Heavens: The Grand Finale of Story Mode in GX. He wins.
- Rebel Relaxation: A few times in the anime.
- Ryo Horikawa: His Japanese voice actor for Super Smash Bros..
- Scarf of Asskicking
- Secret Identity
- Series Mascot
- Shout-Out: If you think that Falcon looks suspiciously like Judge Dredd, you're not alone.
- Showy Invincible Hero: You will never beat him. And even if it looks like you've won, look again. Falcon himself sums it up quite nicely:
Captain Falcon: "Black Shadow! I'll show you, you'll never beat me!" |
- So Last Season: In GX, Falcon reveals that he's going to use the prize money to build the Neo Blue Falcon.
- The Stoic: Even his bombastic speeches in GX are delivered with as little emotion as possible, sometimes to Dramatic Deadpan levels.
- The Comically Serious: GX. Story Mode. Chapter 3. Nuff said.
- Supporting Leader: In the anime.
- Talk to the Fist: His Shut UP, Hannibal to Black Shadow when the Dark Reactor is Going Critical moments before his death? Falcon Punch.
- To Hell and Back: The penultimate level of GX's Story Mode has Falcon dueling Deathborn in a high-stakes race through the Underworld, a literal Fire and Brimstone Hell. Of course, Falcon wins.
#05 Samurai Goroh
The main rival to Captain Falcon, father to Dai Goroh and husband to Lisa Brilliant. The rivalry between him and Falcon began sometime when the two were in the Internova Police together and is the reason he races F-Zero and, probably, a bounty hunter as well. He now leads a group of interstellar bandits whose main headquarters is located in Red Canyon. His illegal activities have made him a target of many; of note Antonio Guster, his old right hand man that he let get arrested by the Space Allies.
His Machine is the Fire Stingray (although rumors say that he stole it), rated A-D-B and weighing in at a hefty 1960kgs, it was created by Toramon Echigoya and uses two RS-5060 engines, aka "The Pride of the Universe." The driving style is more focused on speed and stability, however this leads it to have cruddy acceleration.
- Absurdly Sharp Blade: In his anime debut, he effortlessly cuts through a missile. It gets better from there on.
- Acrofatic: Pudgy, yet he's able to perform multiple backflips in a row.
- The Alcoholic: Loves to drink to his successes... however few they are.
- Anti Role Model: For his son.
- Badass: When you're Capt. Falcon's rival, you've got to be this.
- Adaptational Badass: The version of Goroh shown in the anime oozes badass. He's probably second only to Falcon in this regard.
- Badass Creed: In the anime, "Steal, but never kill."
- Badass Crew: The leader of an intergalactic gang of bandits stationed in Red Canyon.
- Badass Long Hair: His anime incarnation has it.
- In the 64DD expansion to F-Zero X, Goroh is shown to have long hair under his helmet.
- Bilingual Bonus: If you're able to read Japanese characters, the kanji on his shirt becomes this.
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Bounty Hunter: Of course, when your competition is Captain Falcon... connect the dots.
- But Not Too Foreign: He's half-Japanese, half-American.
- Butt Monkey: GX is rather cruel to him. :<
- To must this one in perspective, he's caught in the explosion of his Fire Stingray after losing to Falcon. At the GP, he receives almost as many "boo"s from the crowd as Black Shadow. Most of the racers hate his guts (especially Antonio Guster). Yet, things seem to be looking up for Goroh. He has a son (which means that he was somehow lucky enough to score or even have a wife) who idolizes him, and Princia, of all people, has taken a fancy to him.
- His Butt Monkey status even followed him into Super Smash Bros. Melee, where the opening cinematic shows Falcon bashing the Fire Stingray off of the Mute City course into the ground below. Goroh is seen with a shocked look on his face as his vehicle explodes.
- Iron Butt Monkey
- Cool Car: "I can't lose in my Fire Stingray!"
- Cool Helmet
- Cool Shades
- Cool Starship: His crew gets one in the anime. Its signature weapon? A retractable space katana.
- Eric Stuart: Dub voice for the anime.
- Fat Idiot: Not quite in the games, but he shows a few signs here and there.
- Katanas Are Just Better: He's a samurai, so it's kind of a no-brainer.
- Kavorka Man: He's a loudmouth, crass, arrogant, and greedy bandit who is seen as a major headache by many of his fellow racers, yet it's clear that the insanely hot space babe princess Princia Ramode wants to jump his bones (he also has a son, which implies that another unknown woman felt the same way about him in the past). Subverted in the anime, where he's shown to be more level-headed and mellow, with a noble and sagacious personality. There, he's shown to have a wife, the equally foxy Lisa Brilliant.
- Lennon Specs
- Lovable Rogue: In the anime, his Butt Monkey status is gone and he's pretty much Rick's mentor.
- Master Swordsman: Unparalleled in the anime. Hyper Zoda only won because he's a cheater.
- Patriotic Fervor: In GX, when he signs an autograph, he leaves an imprint of his hand, just like any professional sumo wrestler would.
- Pet the Dog: When he and Ryu/Rick part ways during their first meeting, Goroh may have stolen the goods, but he leaves the medicine Ryu/Rick had been searching for and tells him that he doesn't pilfer from those worse off than him and tries not to harm others unless it's absolutely necessary (i.e. self defense). Ryu/Rick realizes that despite being a thief, Goroh's a decent man with morals. For this reason, he's one of the first people to defend Goroh when Antonio Guster frames him and often seeks out the samurai's advice.
- Real Men Drive Pink Cars
- The Rival: To Captain Falcon.
- Samurai: Guess why.
- Stout Strength: Anyone mind explaining how he's simultaneously ripped and obese?
- Averted in the anime; he loses the "Stout".
- Ted Baxter: Not completely, but his ego in the games definitely overshadows his actual ability.
Samurai Goroh (on the key to his victory): "Being so handsome!" (laughs) |
- Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: He's married to Lisa Brilliant, of course this counts.
- Subverted, as anime!Goroh is far more attractive than his video game self. If he and Lisa were to give birth to a child, they'd undoubtedly be Hot Mom Parents.
- Played straight (in a Ugly Guy, Hot Admirer fashion) with Goroh and Princia, which would be one hell of an Opposites Attract example played straight.
- Wearing a Flag on Your Head: The Japan flag, no less. The design is a bit stylized, though.
- What the Hell, Hero?/Anti-Hero?: In the anime, he gets this from both Ryu/Rick and his wife for blowing up a cargo transport, although he was framed by Antonio Guster's bomb-happy antics.
#03 Dr. Robert Stewart
Dr. Robert Stewart is a licensed medical doctor who took up racing on the F-Zero circuit after the mysterious death of his father, Kevin Stewart, a university professor and F-Zero pilot in his own right. When the Great Accident occurred, he was brought in to perform surgery on all those injured in the crash. And despite some very gruesome and horrible injuries, every operation was a success and Dr. Stewart didn't lose a single patient.
His machine is the Golden Fox, ranked D-A-D, weighing 1,420kgs (originally 1,020) and was passed down to him by his father. Its lightweight construction and weak grip makes it ideal for drifting through corners, even if its high speed and top-notch boost make it a touch difficult to control.
- Brought to You by The Letter "S": By the book. There is a literal "S" on his jumpsuit.
- Dan Green: That's right, kids, DAN GREEN! What more needs to be said?
- Disappeared Dad: His father, Kevin Stewart, died during one of the F-Zero races, possibly due to murder. Robert highly respects his father and races in memory of him.
- Grave Marking Scene: It would seem that he does this on a regular basis.
- Eyes Always Shut: From X onwards.
- Fingerless Gloves
- Handsome Lech: Oddly enough, the comic included with the instruction manual for the first game painted him in this light ("I shall win to honor beautiful women everywhere!").
- Meaningful Name: With an added dose of Fridge Brilliance. In Japan, characters whose eyes are always closed are referred to as having "Kitsune no Me" ("fox's eyes" in English). The name of Stewart's vehicle? The Golden Fox.
- Nobuo Tobita: His seiyuu for the anime.
- Racing Medic: He's a licensed doctor with fabled surgical skills, best seen during the Horrific Grand Finale, where his medical expertise prevented all of patients from dying. He's also one of the more seasoned racers, with over ten years of experience under his belt.
- Scarf of Asskicking Friendship: It's unknown as to who the scarf is meant to symbolize, but it might be Gomar and Shioh, given their comments.
- Spiky Hair: Mostly subverted. His hairstyle is fairly realistic... until you get to those two spikes on each side of the back of his head.
- Team Dad: In the anime.
- This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: In the anime, when Black Shadow uses Dr. Stewart's tech and talents to create Blood Falcon, Dr. Stewart is prepared to eradicate Blood using a bio-weapon that destroys artificial DNA.
- Watch It Stoned: His GX video. This is why magic mushrooms and video game developers don't mix.
#06 Pico
An alien assassin who used to serve in the military. Believed to have caused the great accident which injured many people.
His machine is the "Wild Goose," ranked A-B-C and was a military vehicle. It is the most durable ship, with a good top speed, but it has low acceleration and grip.
- Blood Knight: Literally! Joining the F-Zero races quenches his thirst for blood.
- His theme in GX is probably the closest one could get to capturing such malevolence in audio form.
- Blue and Orange Morality: He definitely adheres to his own alien honor code. But he doesn't seem to be evil, just hard to understand. Extremely hard to understand. Also, his ending in GX has Pico opening fire on targets; notice that he avoids the civilians and snipes a cutout shaped like Black Shadow, which is interesting in the very least.
- Career Killers
- Cold Sniper
- Psycho for Hire: He's Trigger Happy at the very least, but the psychotic part may be a bit of a stretch. Maybe.
- Humanoid Aliens
- Knife Nut: He collects 'em.
- Primal Stance/Limp and Livid: In the Machine Setting screen from GX/AX. His arms sway lifelessly as he cocks his head back and forth before either wiping his mouth with his gloves or randomly pouncing at nothing.
- Progressively Prettier: This is Pico circa F-Zero. This is Pico circa F-Zero GX.
- Retcon: In F-Zero, it's established that he hails from Death Wind. In X, he instead was born on Tortiz 3.
- Retired Badass: A former mercenary for the Polipoto Army's Special Fighting Unit, Pico has now thrown in the towel, but continues to do a few hits on the side.
- Sean Schemmel: Kamehameha, indeed.
- Somebody Set Up Us the Bomb: Tries to get rid of John Tanaka this way in the anime. The key word here is tries.
- Teens Are Monsters: While his age is given as 124, Pico is actually only an adolescent by his planet's standards. It's unknown if his belligerent nature is due to his homeworld's values system or hormones.
- Turtle Power: Despite Word of God's remarks that he's not anything of the sort. For cripes' sake, he comes from Tortiz 3! As expected, his intense, hostile nature sends Pico shooting right into What Measure Is a Non-Cute? land.
- Underwear of Power
- Unpopular Popular Character: In-universe, Pico is seen as The Scrappy due to the belief that his reckless driving caused the big crash several years ago (his refusal to explain anything regarding the matter doesn't exactly help either). While he's not the most popular character in the eyes of the fandom, he certainly isn't hated either.
- We Are as Mayflies: He's 124 and only an teenager by his race's standards. Likely a reference to several varieties of tortoises outliving even humans.
Mr. Zero
- Announcer Chatter: In the anime. Mr. Zero in the games is much, much more reserved.
- No Indoor Voice: Again, in the anime (moreso in the original Japanese cut). Goddamn, lay off the Red Bull!
- Badass Unintentional/Mistaken for Badass: See directly below.
- Bring My Brown Pants: The poor guy is scarred witless if he has the misfortune of interviewing the evil or disturbing characters (the sole exception being Don Genie). The fans give Mr. Zero his due, as it takes guts to even be in the same room with guys like that.
- Black Shadow compliments Mr. Zero on having the courage to ask him for his autograph or requesting that he unmask, going as far as to inquire, "You want to come work for me?"
- Butt Monkey/The Chew Toy: It's both funny and saddening to see this guy have to put up with evil and/or Jerkass racers.
- Cool Helmet: He wears this funky headpiece with goggle-like extensions that covers his eyes and half of his forehead.
- Every Interview Ending: "That's it, everyone! We'll see you at the next Grand Prix." He does change it up when he's stuck with baddies ("Unfortunately, it's time to say good-bye on F-Zero TV. Good-bye, everyone, and keep on racing."), as he wants to hightail it out of there faster than The Flash.
- The Generic Guy: He exists to flesh out every other character. He's most likely the Unfazed Everyman of the cast.
- My Hero Zero: Averted. He's an average Joe, nothing more.
- Sean Schemmel: In the anime, sounding like a gruffer King Kai.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: That tuxedo is pretty stylish. He even changes the color of it for each Difficulty Levels!
- You Gotta Have Green Hair
