Hayato was introduced to the world of Cyber Formula when by accident he became the registered driver of the Cyber Formula car Asurada, designed by his father [[Falling Into the Cockpit|while he recovered it from the hands of mercenaries]]. The Cyber System registers a unique user for the vehicle at the time of activation and the it would take a week to reformat the vehicle for another driver. This was not an option as the race was to be held much sooner. This forces the Sugo team to go with Hayato as the driver for the license race over the team's driver at the time, Akira Hiyoshi. After earning his license to compete in the Cyber Grand Prix, Hayato becomes the youngest driver to ever compete in the Grand Prix, at the time. |

Latest revision as of 19:28, 21 October 2020
Some or all of these characters need descriptions. A list of tropes is not a description. Please provide at least a few words telling how these characters differ from other characters with the same tropelists. |
This is the character sheet for the racing anime series Future GPX Cyber Formula.
Interestingly enough, Cyber Formula is one of the very few Sunrise works to seldom change the major cast as the series progresses while adding new characters into the mix (other than switching the main character role between Hayato Kazami and Bleed Kaga in the last OVA, Sin).
As always with Character pages, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! You have been warned.
Tropes associated with most racers in the series:
- Badass Drivers
- Bishonen: Especially in the later series.
- Calling Your Attacks: They call out their car commands.
- Cool Car: Their cars are equipped with AI supercomputers.
- Cool Helmet
- Demoted to Extra: Other than Hayato and Kaga, most of the racers suffered from this in the last 2 OVAs (especially in SIN) and the SAGA drama CDs, with Randoll and Johji being the worst cases (although in Johji's case, he is still playable in later video games).
- Last-Name Basis: Most of the racers are rarely called by their first names.
Sugo Asurada/Winners/Grand Prix/GIO Grand Prix
Hayato Kazami
Voiced by: Junichi Kanemaru
Birthdate | March 28, 2001 |
Birthplace | Japan |
Blood Type | A |
Height | 152 cm, 5'0" in TV series; 168 cm, 5'6" in SIN |
Weight | 47 kg, 104 lbs in TV series; 60 kg, 132 lbs in SIN |
Teams | Sugo Asurada (2015–2017), Sugo Winners (2018–2019), Sugo Grand Prix (2020–2021), Sugo GIO Grand Prix (2022-) |
Notable Entrants | Asurada GSX (2015), Super Asurada 01 (2015–16), Super Asurada AKF-11 (2016–2019), Garland SF-03 (2020), v-Asurada AKF-0 (2020–2021), v-Asurada AKF-0/G (2022-) |
Hayato was introduced to the world of Cyber Formula when by accident he became the registered driver of the Cyber Formula car Asurada, designed by his father while he recovered it from the hands of mercenaries.
At the beginning of Zero, he was nearly killed in an accident at the British GP when he first discovered the "Zero Realm". The fear was so powerful that he cannot pull the booster handle until the Norwegian GP when he overcomes the fear of the Zero Realm with a little help from Asuka.
In the main series, Hayato has the most World Championships with 4 (John Cleeve and Pitalia Lope have won 2 each). He can go Zero and has mastered the techniques Inertial Drift and Lifting Turn, when used, makes him almost impossible to be defeated. In the series' ending, it was revealed that he is married to Asuka. It is also revealed in the storyline of the PS2 game, Road to the Infinity 3 that he won his 5th and 6th world championships.
Tropes associated with Hayato:
- A Boy and His AI Supercomputer-Equipped Race Car: Later becomes a man.
- Accidental Athlete: Subverted. Although he did enter the world of Cyber Formula completely by accident, he was skilled in motorcycle racing.
- Brought to You by The Letter "S": His Asurada in later models has the letter "S" in them, which stands for Sugo, the team he is in, and his racing suit in the OVAs has the Sugo logo, which also has the "S" on them.
- Brown Eyes
- Defeat Means Friendship: He makes friends with racers after a few or more races with them.
- Determinator
- Die or Fly: He learned his Lifting Turn technique while in this state in Saga and also in 11, as a result, he learned the Inertial Drift.
- Disappeared Dad: His father Hiroyuki, the person who created the AI supercomputer for his car, was killed by Smith, who wanted to use Asurada as a weapon of mass destruction.
- Dude in Distress: Damn you, Nagumo!
- Falling Into the Cockpit
- The Hero
- Kid Hero: In the TV series.
- Heroic BSOD: More than a few times, but especially in episode 22 of the TV series when he learned that his father, the man who made Asurada, was dead.
- Hot-Blooded
- Improbable Age: Not only he made his racing debut at age 14, he won the championship in that age as well in his debut. Subverted, as in the beginning, he had almost no driving skill.
- Invincible Hero: Only badly adjusted machines slow him down by SIN, yet he gives Kaga one hell of a trouble. Plays even straighter in the PS 1 game where Seiichiro only beats him at the last second, blowing up his machine in the process.
- Magnetic Hero: He earns the respect of other racers (most of them anyways), throughout the series. He even lists his specialty as "Making friends with anyone".
- My Hero Zero: He uses the Zero Zone, His first attempt resulted in him being nearly killed, and retiring for a short time, but then he came back to overcome his fear of using the skill with help from Asuka. And in the last 2 OVAs, he drives the v-Asurada AKF-0.
- Naive Newcomer: At least at the beginning of the TV series, since he has no experience in car racing.
- Nice Guy: Most of the time.
- No One Could Survive That: His accident in the first episode of ZERO. The TV series also has it. After he got a Heroic BSOD, he pulled a Nitro Boost and the GSX crashed into the trees, tearing the whole machine apart. The driver cockpit's still all right, and he wasn't physically hurt that much.

Sugo's team staff mainly in charge of communication of the team, but also takes the management role when the manager is out. She is the younger sister of Osamu Sugo and daughter of Kojiro Sugo. She is also the childhood friend and fiancee of Hayato Kazami. When Karl Richter von Randoll entered Cyber Formula racing, he saw Asuka and fell in love with her.
Asuka and Hayato had an engagement in the Zero OVA, but because of his betrayal of his promise to not race anymore, she threw the engagement ring back at him. In the end, she forgave Hayato for what he has done and studied abroad at Columbia University to become a doctor to protect Hayato as well as all those other people who are racing.
For many times, she has been Hayato's main emotional support, which helps him to win in some situations, but at the same time, she is worried about his safety, as racing is a very dangerous profession. At the end of the Sin OVA, it is shown that Hayato and Asuka are getting married, and the acquaintances from the Cyber Formula world has appeared in the background to celebrate the wedding.
Tropes associated with Asuka:
- Bare Your Midriff: In the first 2 OVAs, she wears a two-piece campaign girl outfit.

- Hair Decorations: In the earlier series, she sports a headband.
- Hospital Hottie: One in training, as she's a medical student at Columbia University.
- Lethal Chef: She once made parsley and durian juice for Hayato and when he doesn't want it, she drank it instead and she fainted. In the 2nd radio drama cassette, she cooked and made some food for Hayato's birthday party. This time, Hayato ate the food anyway and the cooking was so bad that he collapsed and was sent to the hospital.
- Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The light feminine to Kyoko's dark.
- Memento MacGuffin: Her pendant, which has a photo of her brother, and the photo also serves as a clue on the identity of Schumacher. That pendant later has a photo of her, Hayato and Osamu. In Double-One, however, she threw her pendant at Osamu after he defeated Hayato in the English race. Hayato later gave it back to her at the end.
- Nice Girl: When not in tsun-tsun mode (in the TV series), although she is a really nice girl in general.

The son of Sugo corp's president Kojiro Sugo and the long lost brother of Asuka. He escaped from his home after an argument with his father due to his belief that the Cyber System isn't needed in the racing society, he then goes to England, joins the Missing Link F-1 team, and becomes The Rival of Edelhi Bootsvorz. However, he accepted the concept of the Cyber System after he became the test driver of the prototype of the Asurada Cyber System. He quits the team sometime later after he knew of Smith's ambition to take the wrong use of his father's childhood friend's creation, the Asurada Super Neuro Computer, for his own gain. He disguises himself as Knight Schumacher, and participated in the 10th Cyber Formula World Grand Prix as a driver of Union Savior to keep an eye on Hiroyuki Kazami's son, Hayato, who is now driving a machine with the aforementioned Cyber System, as well as Smith and his men. He retires in the 4th race due to Smith, who has attacked him while he's on a race duel with Bootsvorz. Osamu returns to his F-1 career after the debut of Super Asurada 01.
In Double-One, he returns for the 11th Cyber GPX as the driver of AOI Zip Formula, and won the English GP race with the Ex-Superion Z/A-8. Despite him quickly becoming a Champion favorite, his eye problems due to the incident with Smith had resurfaced and has worsened in the series. Through he still leads in points in the end of season, his eyes nearly turned blind in the final race, in which he would finish the final 3 laps solely with the navigation voices of the Cyber System. He finished fourth in that race and retired from Cyber Formula after the end of the 2016 season.
Osamu becomes an owner of Sugo Corp, and took over the manager role in the 2017 season. In SAGA, he underwent another operation, this time to correct the eye problem he has since Double-One, although it was not sufficient for him returning in races, he would still essential in the test driver role.
The alias "Knight Schumacher" was named after Michael Schumacher, who was driving in F-3 when the TV series was in production. But due to his early debut in Formula 1 while the TV series was airing, in the final episodes he was seen wearing uniforms and sitting in a garage both in the Camel-colour, which mocks the Benetton Formula where Michael Schumacher belongs in that season.
Tropes associated with Osamu/Schumacher:
- The Ace

- Big Brother Mentor: To Hayato.

- Cool Shades: As Knight Schumacher.
- Curtains Match the Window: He has brown eyes and his hair is also brown.
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: He does this to Henri in the final episode of Zero after Henri tried to abandon his chance of winning the championship. Ironically, he was slapped by his father in a flashback in the TV series before he leaves his home to England.
- He Knows Too Much: Schumacher knew that Hayato's father was developing Asurada during their tenure in Missing Link and learns about Smith's sinister plans. Smith tries to kill him for exposing his secrets, but wound up injuring him instead. He got better, but unfortunately, he suffered an eye injury, which would set the course for 11.
- Jerkass Facade: In 11, it seems that he Took a Level in Jerkass once he challenges Hayato and the other drivers, but it turns out that he just wanted to teach Hayato how to be a better racer as his eyesight problems begins to worsen.

Tropes associated with Henri:
- Arch Enemy: Of Hayato in Zero, Leon in the last 2 OVAs.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In Zero, he may looked like a sweet and cheerful rookie, but he's a actually vengeful person who wanted to make Hayato's (and the other racers') lives miserable. He used Shinjyo, Heinel and Gudelhian to make them believe that Hayato was using reckless racing tactics to get ahead.

- Skunk Stripe: He has silver hair with a red streak on the strand of his bangs.
- Stage Dad: His father pushes Henri to be the best in racing and then ignored him after Hayato wins his first championship. It helps that he's a former racer.

Voiced by: Tatsuya Matsuda (TV series-ZERO), Naoki Tatsuta (SAGA-SIN)
Birthdate | May 17, 2000 |
Birthplace | Japan |
Blood Type | AB |
Miki's eager and willing assistant, he gets very emotional whenever something happens to Asurada. He is high-strung, and although shorter than Hayato, is technically older. Ryohei can sometimes make more trouble than help. He previously wanted to be a racer, but his blood is of a special type and is hard to get enough to do transfusion in case of emergency, so he ended up being a mechanic.
At the end of ZERO, he is promoted to chief mechanic after Miki leaves for Aoi ZIP.
Tropes associated with Ryohei:
- AB Negative: Although it is not explained in-series, it is heavily implied that he has this, due to him having a special kind of blood type and played a plot point in one episode of the TV series. It is also this very kind of blood type that made him give up auto racing due to safety reasons.
- Ill Boy: At least in a filler episode, although he eventually recovered.
- In-Series Nickname: Pei.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: He is rarely referred to by his real name Ryohei.
- Older Than They Look: He is shorter than Hayato, but he is a year older than him.
- Tragic Dream: He wanted to be an auto racer, but he has a special blood type mentioned above that made that dream impossible to achieve because if he gets injured, he loses a lot of blood and it's difficult to find a blood of his type to use transfusion.

Bleed Kaga was a former 'Crash Racer' racing on the fringes of recognized professional racing. These racing often dangerous and resulting in death gave him a plethora of skills he passed on to then rookie driver Hayato Kazami when they met on the highways of Japan. They quickly became friends which was complicated when Bleed, always chasing the big money made the jump to the new Aoi ZIP Formula team formed when his "Proto Jaguar" (A modified Cyber-wheel made by Aoi) was totally wrecked in the Fireball Race and Aoi began to lose confidence in their rising star Naoki Shinjyo. Bleed and Hayato would first be friends then rivals as their goals in racing began to clash.
Like Hayato, he proceeded the "Zero-Realm" ability which can predict the opponent's movement in an very early stage, however, upon his discovery of "Zero-Realm", he would be involved in an accident in which his best friend Eiji Aizawa was killed. He bears the grief as the reason of his death until he found Hayato, which he found similarities towards Eiji. Kaga would call Hayato as his "lifetime rival" until he beats him in 2022. In the opener of 2023 season, he was seen visiting the grave of Eiji.
Due to his field race background, he also proceeded some offensive skills which can damage his opponents' cars, through he avoids to use them unless in extreme situations.

- Dead Best Friend: Eiji died in a car collision as a result of Kaga discovering the Zero Realm.
- Genki Guy: In the TV series and the first OVA.
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: He punches Shinjyo twice in episode 6 of Zero.

- Super Mode: The Zero Realm, just like Hayato and Shinjyo.

Being the 7th and 9th Grand Prix winner, Lope was a favorite in the 10th Cyber Formula Grand Prix. He finished 2nd and 1st place in the first 2 rounds, making him as the title favorite especially after Knight Schumacher retired from the series in race 4. However, his advantages disappeared due to the fast pace of the car developments by Sugo, Aoi and Union Savior. Even if he still had a slim chance being the World Champion (by winning the race and neither point leaders Randoll, Shinjyo and Hayato finished with points) in the Japan race, his car crashed out in the final 25% of race while battling 3rd place with Kaga, ending his hopes of being a defending Champion. He retired as a racer after that race.
He assisted Akira Hiyoshi, who leaves the Sugo team to get the Super License and racing with Hayato. After his retirement as a driver, he invited Hiyoshi to his team, replacing himself as a driver.

Akira Hiyoshi is a secondary character of the Future GPX Cyber Formula series. Hiyoshi was first introduced as a driver of Sugo Asurada, and originally intended to be a driver of Asurada GSX right before the Fujioka race in 2015. However, as Hayato Kazami was registered as the exclusive driver of Asurada and his participation in the Grand Prix becoming impossible, Hiyoshi leaves his racing team in a rage. During his stay in Brazil (working as a coffee plantation worker), Hiyoshi learns that Hayato obtained the Super License to join the World Grand Prix, and is disheartened. His life, however, was able to return to the track, thanks to the advices and encouragements of Pitalia Lope. Hiyoshi naturalizes himself as a Brazilian and joins KOH-I-NOOR Formula to begin his challenge to the Super License, with Lope as his mentor. He successfully received the license and made his first debut in the World Grand held in Brazil in 2015, where he ranked 2nd place. Appears only in the TV series and 11 (and opening sequence in Zero). Before his participation of the Cyber Formula Championship, he already set the most winning records in the JCM Off-Road Championship. In the 2015 Japan Grand Prix, held in his homeland of Hokkaido, he corrected the weather forecast (which cannot be predicted by Cyber Systems) which helped him to advance to the World Grand Prix in his 3rd year of Cyber Formula. He took the full advantage of the predicted rain and finished the race only behind Naoki Shinjyo. He also hinted at Hayato for that information which also made him promote to World Grand Prix by finishing behind him.
Although he showed good abilities in off-road racing because of his rallying background and scored some points, he was unable to deal with the huge amount of data from the Cyber System, but relied on his own. He was heavily injured in the 9th Race in Germany in the 2015 season caused indirectly by the collision between him and Hayato. Although his life is spared, he was unable to participate in Cyber Formula again and has to withdraw from the series. While the rallying events was abolished in the 2016 season, he returned to Rally racing after 2016.

Asurada
Voiced by: Kenichi Ono
The computer navigation system created by Hiroyuki Kazami, Hayato's father, is the most advanced system in the world of Cyber Formula, said to be able to analyze emotions and continue to evolve. It was designed as an opposite to the Ogre Cyber System developed in 2019.
Once Asurada was finished, Smith from Missing Link, where Hiroyuki Kazami was working in, had tried to obtain this system to create weapons of mass destruction. But Hayato Kazami has registered himself as the only driver of Asurada in order to flee the system from Smith's men. However, as it has a unique security feature, Asurada only responses to the first person contacting with it and no additional driver can be added. And Hayato has to replace Akira Hiyoshi as the driver of Sugo to participate in the Fujioka preliminaries.
The system's biggest drawback is its unique security feature. Although additional persons can be added in communication purposes, driving orders must be taken by the driver himself and cannot be changed. Akira Hiyoshi, the original driver of Asurada GSX, could not drive the car and leaves the team afterwords. And when Hayato suffered an serious accident in the 2017 season, the Sugo team cannot find any driver to replace with, and directly leads to the development of non-Asurada operated Garland SF-01.
On many occasions, Asurada has been abandoned by Hayato, but every time they meet again, Asurada forgives him and swears that they'll forever be partners.
Asurada is still proved superior even if it has been used for 7 years. In the 2021 and 2022 seasons its chassis, v-Asurada AKF-0 would still get overall first and second places, respectively.
Tropes associated with Asurada:
- Cool Car: Or rather, "Cool AI System For A Car".
