Since most anime-viewers are big nerds, there are naturally going to be a lot of anime-inspired Internet memes.

  • After the horribly animated Yoake Mae Yori Ruriiro na -Crescent Love- drew two cabbages as simple green circles, Fan Art with Feena holding one such cabbage was everywhere, and it actually survived a round in the SaiGAR "manly character" competition. Negima!? also spoofed this one.
  • "FUTAE NO KIWAMI, AAAAAAAAAAH!" [42]
  • "IT'S A TRAP!" [43]
    • Also used in reverse—a woman hiding as a man is called a "Reverse Trap".
    • Funny thing is that it already overlapped with the whole Trap Card meme, so, you'll usually see photoshopped cards of Bridget and Jun, among other lesser known traps.
    • Similarly, male characters who end up in drag for zany schemes will usually prompt fans to create Wholesome Crossdresser or even outright female personas for them. A famous example is 'Ranko', a false persona Ranma Saotome creates which many fans distanced from the male character.
  • "Ideon destroyed the universe!!!" [44]
    • It doesn't help that in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, they said the universe would be destroyed if Ideon went out of control.
  • NICE BOAT! [45]
    • The "Magical Heart Kokoro-chan" OVA episode gives a quite deliberate Shout-Out to the meme, featuring a lifeboat labeled "NICE BOAT" drifting down a river of blood...
    • And then Kadokawa posted up a short clip of a (admittedly quite nice looking) sailboat with the words "It's not finished yet" (or something to that effect) the day Haruhi-chan was supposed to start.
  • Similar to the Loituma Girl cartoon, a looped short clip of Mai and Mii dancing from the Popotan h-game opening was set to "Caramelldansen" by the Swedish Eurodance group Caramell. Thus the Caramelldansen Vid trope. Any videos that fit that trope should be listed there.
  • Card Crusher. [46]
  • Similar to the Rambo example in the film section, in the 1970s Ferdinand Marcos' regime banned Super Robot show Voltes V in the Philippines, officially because of excessive violence, but really because the heroes were rebels fighting a brutal dictator. Voltes V proceeded to be adopted as a mascot by Filipino rebels.
  • The ending sequence from Clannad, the touching "Dango Daikazoku", has been made into hundreds of different versions.
    • The opening theme of Clannad After Story, Toki wo Kizamu Uta, has a tendency to be remade with any anime that has a Fundamentally Female Cast, any other work of Key Visual Arts, or just any work in general.
    • Tomoya seems to be known to some as "the Clannadman". (Related expression: "You will never be the Clannadman!")
    • Fuuko's love of starfish has reached memetic levels. "HITODEEEGethbot (talk)!<3"
  • The "talent" joke. In Sailor Moon R the girls were trying out for a role in a play. In the dub, Lita said she should get the role because she has the most talent. In the original version, Makoto said she should get the part because she has the biggest boobs. However, the dub still has a close-up of her chest. Talent has since become a euphemism for breast size.
    • "Sailor Mars is the hottest". This tends to show up in discussions about which of the Sailor Soldiers is the hottest. Sailor Mars' powers are based around Playing with Fire, so the Incredibly Lame Pun was inevitable.
  • Not exclusively related to anime but the infamous Finnish dubbing team Agapio Racing Team's Macekre-dub of certain series has achieved meme-like qualities in Finland, especially the emotionless expressions of emotion from Digimon.
    • Examples of this can be found here and here.
  • "____ is mai waifu" [47]
    • The male version should be "hasubando" but is usually just "husbando."
    • An alternate origin could be the Japanese otaku practice of proclaiming a female (or male) character "ore no yome", which means exactly the same thing. A Shout-Out to this practice appeared in Lucky Star.
    • There's even a Mai-Waifu Fansubs, the waifu in this case being Enma Ai.
  • Fate Stay Night: GAR! [48]

  • Backbeard, noted Celtic eyeball monster and Gegege no Kitaro villain, has become associated with criticism of lolicons.[53]
  • Among Humongous Mecha fans "G is the most powerful/hot-blooded letter of the alphabet". See Gundam (especially G Gundam), GaoGaiGar, Getter Robo, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, among others.
  • On /a/, it's a meme to answer any and all requests for anime recommendations or the source of a picture with "Boku no Pico". It's a Shotacon OVA.
    • Which is generally followed by Bible Black, La Blue Girl, etc...
      • On /m/, Legend of the Blue Wolves (hardcore yaoi hentai) is "popular" for both this and a "lose" condition in bets based on the last number of your post.
      • And sometimes mixed with other boards' versions of the same joke (like Battletoads)
    • YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! [54]
  • Kodomo No Jikan's ED has been parodied with other series' characters. This is good news for people who like the song but can't stand the underage fanservice imagery of the original.
  • Bara manga Kuso Miso Technique has spawned two catchphrases: "uho, ii otoko!" ("wow, nice guy!", roughly equivalent to "hey, good-looking!") and "yaranaika?" ("wanna do it?"). The characters' exaggerated facial expressions have been shopped extensively onto other works.

  1. ↑ Explanation: One of Vegeta's lines from the first dub of Dragonball Z, referring to Goku's Power Level after his first return from the dead. Popular for its Narm, and used to describe any situation in which something is unexpectedly large.
  2. ↑ Explanation: Like this.
  3. ↑ Explanation Tsuruya was taken by a Japanese Web Comic artist and made into a Super-Deformed Ditz named Churuya, with a line she said once in the anime made into her Catch Phrase, and an affinity for smoked cheese. Spawned countless imitations involving characters from Haruhi or other anime - and is now more emblematic of Haruhi than anything that actually appeared in the show.
  4. ↑ Explanation Fan-made pictures of the cast (and even a rewrite of some of the novels) as the opposite sex. "Kyonko" is particularly popular, mostly for being The Comically Serious, as is "Itsuko", who apparently makes some Itsuki fangirls question their sexuality.

  8. ↑ Explanation Haruhi's Reality Warper status made Itsuki speculate that Haruhi is actually God. Note on just "speculation".
  9. ↑ Explanation Fan Sub of a repeated line in the infamous "Endless Eight" episodes, as an explanation of what was going on. The line has since become synonymous with Endless Eight, often repeated (multiple times) whenever someone brings up those episodes.

  11. ↑ Explanation Taniguchi sings this line as he walks in on a Not What It Looks Like moment with Kyon and Nagato. Quickly became an Ascended Meme as Taniguchi's voice actor, Minoru Shiraishi, references it where ever he can, from his role in Lucky Star, to even reenacting the scene when announcing the Haruhi live concert!
  12. ↑ Explanation One fan's confusion as to why no-one notices that Hanyuu isn't exactly normal. Everybody got on his case for his grammatical error but eventually turned it around to have fun with it.

  21. ↑ Explanation A Narmy panel from Part 1 that fans now use as a reaction image.
  22. ↑ Explanation For a long time, the only available scans of Part 4 were a So Bad It's Good Blind Idiot Translation that used a Chinese source (the town is called Moriou (forest king), which in Chinese would be read as Duwang) that fans refer to as the Duwang Translation. The above quote is one of the more memorably So Bad It's Good bits of dialogue, spoken by the main villain.

  24. ↑ Explanation In Part 5, Bruno Buccelatti claims that he can tell if a person is lying by the taste of their sweat. He then demonstrates this ability by sneaking up behind the hero and licking his cheek in a memetically Ho Yay-tastic scene.
  25. ↑ Bad/suspicious stuff happens, the protagonists say it "must be the work of an enemy Stand". Because usually it is.
  26. ↑ Explanation Nanoha's tendency for There Is No Kill Like Overkill is her most easily-recognised characteristic and prone to heavy Flanderization, to the point where her detonating a planet is not found to be unusual. (The line itself is based on Nanoha's Catch Phrase "Zenryoku zenkai", literally translating as "Full power, full throttle", but the second part is a homophone of "total destruction".)
  27. ↑ Explanation Got its memetic status from Nanoha, but the line and pose are actually a Shout-Out to when Freeza kills Krillin in Dragonball Z.
  28. ↑ Explanation Nanoha's Fan Nickname, from a line when Vita refers to her as "a devil" and her white outfit. Also a reference to Mobile Suit Gundam, where Amuro Ray has this nickname in-universe.
  29. ↑ Explanation The fact that Sony named their recent handheld "Playstation Vita" was not lost on the Nanoha fanbase.
  30. ↑ Explanation Subaru's behaviour around Nanoha and Teana has led to her portrayal as a yuri maniac.
  31. ↑ Explanation Nanoha's practice of making friends of those that survive her attacks is another of her defining characteristics, the term used as a synonym for "beat the crap out of" (as in "you're about to be befriended").
  32. ↑ Explanation Erio was once the only male of any significance in the entire series, everyone else very minor or Demoted to Extra, and this was the result. Oh, and it's canon.
  33. ↑ Explanation During her first fight with Vita Nanoha calls out to her: "Listen to me!" while Raising Heart announces her attack: "Divine Buster!"
  34. ↑ Explanation Despite most fans hating the 4Kids! dub of One Piece, many did however grudingly love the pirate rap.
  35. ↑ Explanation Admiral Akainu killed Portgas D. Ace while proclaiming that his magma burned hotter than Ace's fire. Shanks blocked a magma attack from Akainu using a sword.
  36. ↑ Explanation Eiichiro Oda has continually reassured readers that the Straw Hats would reach Fishman Island after the then-current arc. They finally reach it after the two-year timeskip.
  37. ↑ Explanation A line made for Oda's love of all things Chekhov.
  38. ↑ Explanation Franky's hot-blooded catchphrase
  39. ↑ Explanation At least before the Wham Episodes, this fact is frequently brought up in One Piece discussions. [[spoiler:The Time Skip is considered a second beginning with the recent deaths of Ace and Whitebeard applicable to Flash Backs, this meme is officially back.
  40. ↑ Explanation Suiseiseki's Verbal Tic. Even though this is a fairly common speech pattern in lots of characters it became highly associated with her. It's not so much the word itself that's peculiar to Suiseiseki, but how she pronounces it: "desuuh" as opposed to the usual "dess".
  41. ↑ Explanation With Invasion Squid Girl getting an anime adaptation, Ika Musume's verbal tic became just as popular as desu for a short time.
  42. ↑ Explanation Based on the various dubs (the English one being the most popular).
  43. ↑ Explanation Many Wholesome Crossdressers in anime are drawn really, really pretty, to the point where they can be passed off as actual female characters to new fans with surprising ease. Admiral Ackbar's memetic exclamation was taken to describe this kind of a character as a "trap", in the sense that a highly stereotypical, undersexed, and loudly heterosexual male Otaku would be trapped in a conflicting lust for the character. At this point, the jargon is used ironically.
  44. ↑ Explanation Distorting the message behind the famous ending, and in fact is what made it famous. Granted, "Ideon blew up while the Big Bad exploded so large it blew up a galaxy" isn't quite as impressive.
  45. ↑ Explanation The final episode of the School Days anime was replaced with thirty minutes of peaceful landscape scenery, including a boat on a lake, after it was deemed too close to home due to violent incidents in the news. A 4channer decided to mess with 2ch by making a thread with screenshots of the scenery video describing the "nice boat". In a rare scenario, both the Japanese and American viewers had a good laugh and a meme has been born. Used to describe anything from censorship to being murdered. The real last episode coincidentally did end with a Nice Boat.
  46. ↑ Explanation From a Japanese TV sketch involving a man crushing a business card in front of the woman who gave it to him, while looking at her with a ridiculous expression on his face, was turned into a meme when someone did a comic strip version with Kagami and Konata from Lucky Star. An example of Values Dissonance, as the exchanging of business cards is a fairly big deal in Japan, with its own set of social mores.
  47. ↑ Explanation "My Wife" rendered as Gratuitous English, referencing someone's particular attraction to a fictional, unattainable character. Bonus points for extraordinarily hot anime girls. Originated from Azumanga Daioh where the girls look at a picture that Kimura-sensei dropped which he explains is of "Mai waifu". She's pretty hot, and this is Kimura we're talking about here.
  48. ↑ Explanation A small but amusing typo (or acronym) in the phrase "Gay for Archer", gave way to the ultimate synonym for "manly" and "Badass".
  49. ↑ Explanation Apparently, the levels of cuteness caused someone to masturbate so hard they burst their "nut-bladder". Used to summarise anything absurdly cute, though the video game meme "HHNNNNNNGGGG!" has almost completely replaced it.
  50. ↑ Explanation Emoticon of a typical wide-face Super-Deformed expression that Hidamari Sketch is infamous for. Often goes hand-in-hand with mentions of nutbladders.
  51. ↑ Explanation Gundam 00, Macross Frontier, and the most recent Full Metal Panic! novel have all killed off or apparently killed off their respective sniper characters during that year.
  52. ↑ Explanation A phrase commonly used to describe a picture of two girls standing so close together their breasts are squished against each other. Originated from a Super Robot Wars Alpha 2 Yonkoma where, instead of showing Cho Ryu Jin's Symmetrical Docking Transformation Sequence, a picture of original characters (with huge breasts) Kushua Mizuha and Seolla Schweitzer are shown in this position.
  53. ↑ Explanation Years ago, there was a notorious anti-loli poster called Backbeard on 2channel. This led to someone photoshopping this famous panel to say "kono rorikon domome" ("you damned lolicons!")
  54. ↑ Explanation One Boxden user wrote a review of Boku No Pico. This being Boxden, it was written in Jive Turkey, creating a rather surreal quality which proved popular on /a/. See also the Dramatic Reading.]
  55. ↑ Explanation The Tsubasa equivalent of "just as planned", it came into being after Kurogane cut Fei Wong Reed in half, only to find out that he had actually killed Kyle disguised as Fei Wong Reed, leaving the heroes injured and tired while he is perfectly fine. Applied to just about every twist Tsubasa has taken since Acid Tokyo.
  56. ↑ Explanation In one flashback arc, we see an adorable little girl with freckles who was once kind to Fai (she looks about ten). In a completely different arc, in a different world and time period, we meet a little boy who cheerfully offers the heros some apples, and later lets them stay at his house. The fans dubbed them Freckle-chan and Apple-kun, respectively, and decided they make a cute couple. Even though there's no possible way for them to meet in canon.

  61. ↑ Explanation Gemini Saga's trademark attack, which warps you to a Pocket Dimension. Started in the Latin American dub due to the INCREDIBLY hammy delivery, but it's also been spotted in other fandom corners. Video link.
  62. ↑ Explanation Nodoka's character defining Covert Pervert moment, in which she discovers her solution to the Love Triangle in which she finds herself between herself, Negi and Yue is an OT3.
  63. ↑ Explanation In this series Pactio is a magical Pact between a mage and his guardian that allows him to empower the guardian and sometimes creates a powerful artifact. Naturally this is done by having the two kiss, and so far over half of Negi's class had Pactio'd.
  64. ↑ Explanation Negi has a potential harem to rival Tenchi Muyo!, nearly everyone falls in love with him in one way or another (including two of his mortal enemies), and he is only ten years old.

  76. ↑ Explanation (spoilers) The PSG finale had, for all it's weirdness, been heading towards a Here We Go Again ending--when out of nowhere, with less than a minute left in the episode, a Shocking Swerve was was thrown in wherein Stocking stuck her sword in Panty's head. It all went downhill from there. Even the characters were shocked with the turn of events, and fans were set all afrenzy. The airing of the episode? December 24th. Merry Christmas!
  77. ↑ Explanation (spoilers) The original laughing man was a genius hacker who found out the medical industry was screwing the public over concerning a particularly nasty disease and its cures. He kidnapped one of the major presidents of said industry to make a statement, culminating in a rather public outburst in public, digitally replacing his face with a logo. Since he was never caught, various people took his persona to commit various crimes, all under the impression that they were the original Laughing Man. Eventually, one of them threatened to kill a police chief at a public event. The attempt took place, but at least two dozen people came out of the woodwork to do so, each claiming to be the original Laughing Man. It was eventually determined through insanely complex philosophical, psychological, and technological babble that the Laughing Man had become a meme, and spread into people's minds due to their ability to directly interact with each other's brains on the net.
  78. ↑ Explanation One of Conan/Shinichi's catch phrases is "Edogawa Conan, tantei sa!", which means "I'm Conan Edogawa, a detective!".
  79. ↑ Explanation In a Non-Serial Movie, Conan came up with "my dad taught me in Hawaii!" as a quick excuse to cover up something quialifying as a Deus Ex Machina. Therefore, in some fandom corners (specially the Taiwanese fandom) the phrase is often used to either mock or explain plotholes.

  81. ↑ Explanation The Tekkaman dub has Tekkaman yell out "SPACE LANCE! every fricken' time he uses it . He also states the obvious constantly.
  82. ↑ Explanation This is because Toshiyuki Morikawa - who voiced Tekkaman Blade - screamed the signature Wave Motion Gun attack in such a Hot-Blooded manner that the recording microphone actually broke - and he did this on two separate occasions.

  106. ↑ Explanation Shouma has become, er, very well-known among males in 4chan, and his Yamato Nadeshiko traits have made him one of the VERY rare males that 4channers would consider as "waifu" material.
