Latest revision as of 19:10, 16 May 2024
The protagonists of the series Karakuridouji Ultimo. A group of doji who embody a certain trait of goodness and their masters. Their hideout is an abandoned hospital.
NOTE: There are major spoilers on this page. Read at your own risk.
Yamato Agari and Ultimo
Yamato Agari and Ultimo are the two major characters of Karakuridouji Ultimo. They represent Ultimate Good and are the leaders of The Good Doji Club.
Yamato Agari
"If I don't fight...then who will?!!" |
The main hero. He's known mostly by all of this friends (and enemies) for being a huge idiot loudmouth and for his unusually tall height. In his past life, he was a bandit who later gained recognition with the people for his heroic, Robin Hood-like actions against the corrupt government.
Tropes associated with Yamato:
- Adorkable
- All Love Is Unrequited: He has a crush on Sayama. Whether she returns his feelings or not is unknown.
- Being Good Sucks
- Berserk Button: Even mention destruction anywhere remotely close to where Sayama is, and Yamato will lose it.
- Bishie Sparkle: Yamato does this once in a while, but since he isn't really Bishonen it's probably played for laughs.
- Brown Eyes
- Butt Monkey: Try to find a chapter where something bad doesn't happen to Yamato.
- Cannot Spit It Out: Yamato has been in love with Sayama for about, oh, seven years.
- The Chosen One: Sorta. Dunstan prefers him as Ultimo's master, and has gone to lengths to keep him around, but it has been stated by Murayama that Ultimo still could get another master if he had too.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Oh, so much.
- Completely Missing the Point: Tends to ramble on about something that, really, has no importance to the matter at hand whatsoever. At least he's a little bit aware of it...
- Covert Pervert: Some of the glimpses into Yamato's head have shown Sayama in more interesting outfits. (One time wearing nothing at all). Although, Your Mileage May Vary, seeing as he is a 16 year old boy, and has been in love with her for seven years.
- Chapter 25 shows that in his past life he used to peek on Sayama (who was much younger back then) undressing.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Typically Yamato is just the normal Idiot Hero, but if you push him too far or mention Sayama, he'll sport a Slasher Smile and start a fight.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Yamato jumps at Vice, motivated by the desire to protect Sayama. This causes Ultimo to remember that Yamato's personality and values are the same as they were nine centuries ago, and he takes the opportunity to attack Vice, albeit being broken in half in the process.
- Disappeared Dad
- Dumb Is Good
- Dumb Muscle
- Expy: His past self looks like Amidimaru and/or Silva from Shaman King.
- Five-Man Band
- Flashback Nightmare: His flashbacks.
- Forced to Watch: Vice was going to make 12th century Yamato watch his comrades be killed.
- Hilariously Abusive Childhood: He's outright scared of his mother. Nobody can take it seriously because it's Yamato, though.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Yamato would be the huge guy in any relationship he has, as he's freakishly tall.
- Idiot Hero
- I Just Want to Be Normal: Well, of course Yamato would act like this upon meeting Ultimo and learning about the Hundred Machine Funeral.
- It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Yamato can't go one minute without an Evil (or Good) doji either attacking him or asking him for help.
- Katsuyuki Konishi: His VA in the V comic.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: He doesn't just look like Amidamaru, he sounds like him too!
- Not to mention Kamina, America and Canada, and Komui Lee.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: He doesn't just look like Amidamaru, he sounds like him too!
- Kid Hero
- Lolicon: Implied in his past life. He doesn't react to it well.
- Love At First Sight: With Sayama way back when he was 10.
- Living with the Villain: Yamato was unaware that Rune became Jealousy's master up to Chapter 9.
- The Mafia/ Yakuza: His bandit gang has been reincarnated as a gang and he becomes their leader. Unwillingly by the looks of it.
- Mistaken for Gay: By Sayama, resulting in a Crowning Moment of Funny
- No Indoor Voice
- Non-Human Sidekick: Subverted, as many believe Ultimo, not Yamato, is the main character.
- Not What It Looks Like: Happens with Yamato and Ultimo in Chapter 3.
- Oblivious to Love: Yamato about Rune's crush, up to chapter 10.
- Ordinary High School Student: Yamato used to be this... until he found out that he was the master of the most powerful doji of Good for 900 years and that he now has to fight with him against Evil in the Hundred Machine Funeral.
- Papa Wolf / Friend to All Children: He is very protective of children, and has shown he would never hurt one. It seems to be a big reason for his attitude towards Ultimo.
- He even took care of the kids in his bandit gang.
- Rape as Drama: An attempt by Rune in Chapter 21.
- Real Men Don't Cry: AVERTED HARD. He's probably cried more than anyone else in the series. Even Ultimo.
- Save the Villain: In Chapter 14, Yamato saves Iruma from a repeat of what happened in Chapter 8. He tries again to prevent Musashi from mind-wiping him later on, but Jealousy ends up killing him.
- Second Year Protagonist
- Selective Obliviousness: Yamato, about Rune's crush on him.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Ultimo and Yamato play this straight with their appearances, and their personalities in general. But, they also subvert it with the fact that Ultimo is a fighting robot, and obviously a lot stronger.
- Shirtless Scene: After Shirtless Scene, after Shirtless Scene, after, well, you get the point.
- Shower of Angst: Yamato has one in chapter 4 when Sayama mistakes him for being a child molester.
- Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: Inverted with Yamato and Sayama. He's a dorky single guy that has a crush on (possibly) the most popular girl in class.
- Single-Target Sexuality: He really seems to only have an interest in Sayama.
- Speed Stripes: Yamato has these whenever he's running.
- Take a Third Option: His plan is to fight or meet all the Doji masters before the Hundred Machine funeral.
- Teens Are Short: ...compared to Yamato.
- Too Dumb to Fool: Yamato immediately thinks there something fishy about Iruma's offer in chapter 5, though knowing him from his past life does help.
- Took a Level In Dumbass: Yes he really does seem to get dumber and dumber each chapter.
- Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth : In Act 18, when Jealousy reads his heart, he sees a army of Sayamas surrounding him and Yamato, making him realize that he'll die if he tries to perform the pledge with him. Unfortunately, this causes him to notice Kodaira.
- Younger Than They Look: Yamato seriously looks old enough to be a teacher instead of a student.
Ultimo
"Nine centuries Yamato-sama! Ulti missed you very much!" |
The greatest doji of Good. The manga essentially revolves around him. He embodies every good quality a person should have, such as modesty, kindness, and patience. However, there are incidents that imply that Ultimo isn't as nice as he looks. His master is Yamato Agari.
His Karakuri Henge theme are lions and cranes.
Tropes associated with Ultimo:
- Ambiguously Gay: See Ho Yay / Ship Tease below.
- Ambiguous Innocence: It's hard to tell if he really knows the difference between good and evil sometimes...
- Anime Hair: Though it's subverted when he takes a more human form, in which his hair looks reasonably normal.
- Anti-Hero: A type III/IV when at his worst.
- Ax Crazy
- Badass Adorable
- Beauty Equals Goodness
- Berserk Button: Don't touch Yamato. Unless you want to deal with Ultimo.
- Beware the Nice Ones
- Big Good
- Bishie Sparkle: Ultimo does this so much, other characters comment on it.
- Caped Mecha: God Ultimo has one.
- Catch Phrase: "Yes Master/Yamato-sama."
- Chaste Hero: Ultimo is implied to be this. He never picked up on the awkward atmosphere after the chapter 3 incident, nor does he seem to realize what kind of implications he is causing with how friendly he is with Yamato. Makes a lot of sense though, since he is the embodiment of pure good.
- Children Are Innocent: Possibly a Deconstruction / Subversion. He's the embodiment of Good, but, the cuteness hides a pretty nasty side of him.
- Cute and Psycho
- Cute Machines
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: You'd think that having the ability to manipulate time and space would make you invincible. It doesn't.
- Don't Make Me Destroy You: A favorite line of his when fighting Vice.
- Every Doji Is Better With Sparkles
- Fan Service: The title page for chapter 16. Bonus points for his expression and pose, not reflecting either one of his personalities.
- Fatal Flaw: Ultimo's tendancy to go berserk and violent might be considered this.
- Giant Robot Hands Save Lives: How God Ultimo saves Hana.
- The Glomp: Ultimo infamously gives these to Yamato whenever he sees him.
- Good Is Not Nice
- Green Eyes
- Green Eyed Red Head
- Grotesque Cute: Even when Ultimo is in Ax Crazy mode, with his Slasher Smile and all, you have to admit he still looks cute.
- Hypocrite: Ultimo represents "Good"... but destroys a lot of neighborhood property and threatens to roast Jealousy alive with his rocket boosters while holding very disturbing expressions...
- Jealousy even calls him out on this in his "The Reason You Suck" Speech. Before, of course, Ultimo smashes him to a pulp.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Ultimo should be this, but defently isn't.
- In-Series Nickname: Uru, since the japanese pronouciation of his name is Urutimo.
- Ulti in the english translation.
- Light Is Not Good: With the way Ultimo acts...
- Megumi Nakajima
- Hey, It's That Voice!: His VA in the V comic also voiced Ranka from Macross Frontier.
- Name's the Same: Incidentally, Stan Lee created another Ultimo (one set in the Marvel Universe) decades before this one.
- No Sense of Personal Space
- Pay Evil Unto Evil: Ultimo does this a lot. Especially if it's Jealous.
- Put on a Bus: After his fight with Jealous and Iruma, Ultimo was out of power for the rest of Part II and the beginning of Part III.
- Redheaded Hero
- Robotic Psychopath
- Running Gag: Anytime Ultimo rushes to see Yamato, he breaks glass. Pieces of the glass always fly into Yamato. Usually his face.
- Sexy Backless Outfit
- Shirtless Scene: Subverted during the vow. He didn't have a shirt on, but the distrubing, gaping hole on his chest kind of took away from it.
- Played straight with the Chapter 16 title page.
- Slasher Smile: He does this as much as his brother.
- Sociopathic Hero: The poster boy for the trope.
- Split Personality: Goes from Moe and cheery, to batshit and violent in a heartbeat.
- Super-Powered Evil Side: Complete with the Slasher Smile and Glowing Eyes of Doom
- Tender Tears: Ultimo does this a lot.
- Third Person Person: He occassionally does. He usually uses his nickname "Uru" though.
- Time Travel: His Noh power.
- Thou Shalt Not Kill: He has a hard time remembering this.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Understatement.
- You Are What You Hate: Naturally being the good doji, his reason for hating Jealous and Vice would be their violent and evil natures. Jealous has even pointed out his hypocricy.
Musashi Murayama and Sophia
The master and doji of wisdom and members of The Six Perfections.
Musashi Murayama
"I come from the future. Just call me Musashi." |
A 16-year-old boy that was a genius warrior in the future. He traveled back to the year 2012 to stop the Hundred Machine Funeral from happening, as it destroyed his future, and to capture Dustan. His personality is mostly polite, yet he seems to have a hard spot for Yamato.
He had an older sister named Miyuu whom he was very close with. It's implied that she disappeared when the future was ruined, and seems to be a big part of why Musashi is fighting.
Tropes associated with Murayama:
- The Aloner: He's not so much going mad, but just getting more and more reckless. Of course, with this series, who knows what might happen to him.
- Badass Bookworm
- Big Man on Campus: Murayama immediately becomes this when he enters Yamato's school.
- Bishonen: He's so bishonen that girls run and knock over desks just to see him.

- Blue Eyes
- Catch Phrase: "Call me Musashi"
- Cyborg: Though it is unknown how much of his body is modified.
- [[spoiler: Dead Big Sister: Presumably, along with the rest of the 30th century.

- Five-Man Band
- The Smart Guy As well as The Lancer, after Eco's death.
- I'll Kill You!: Murayama basically says this to Yamato in chapter 13 as one of his options.
- In-Series Nickname: Yamato calls him Musayama (a combo of his frst and last name) and Sushiyama.
- Jerkass
- Jerkass Woobie: Well he did lose everyone he loved. You'd be pretty sour about it too.
- Last-Name Basis: Almost every character calls Musashi by his last name, much to his protest.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy
- Second Year Protagonist: After he joins Yamato's class.
- Set Right What Once Went Wrong: He's a cop from the future, so 'natch.
- Sexy Man, Instant Harem: The minute he walks into the classroom, the girls are already swarming him. They completly ignore the fact he says he's from the future.
- Supercop: It is mentioned numerous times that in the future the police modify their bodies; Murayama is no different. Bonus points for the fact that he traveled Dustan back to the past and is trying to stop the Hundred Machine Funeral from happening with all he's got.
- Teen Genius
- The Rival: Is turning into this for Yamato.
- Too Clever by Half: Don't get us wrong, Murayama is smart, but he's pulled a couple of dumbass moves, that have shocked both the audience and himself.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: He seemed relatively polite up into chapter 12. Not so much now.
- Trapped in the Past: How will Murayama get back to his own time after he stops the Hundred Machine Funeral from happening?
- Ungrateful Bastard: Subverted; he generally thanks Eco for all that he's done, but refuses to acknowledge Yamato for saving his life by pressing the Reset Button and returning him to the day before the Hundred Machine Funeral.
- When He Smiles: He gives a genuine smile to Sayama in Chapter 25.
- You Can't Fight Fate: Murayama comes from the future, and his goal is to stop the Hundred Machine Funeral from happening. He fails the first time, and considering how Dunstan is always meddling with events, he probably can't stop it from happening.
Sophia
"As long as goodness fights with love, it cannot lose. Not even if it dies." |

- Good Is Not Dumb: He embodies Wisdom, and he is on the Good Doji side.

A short and bald doji who embodies disipline of the Six Perfections of Buddhism. He can be laid back, but serious when the time comes. He knows about the horrible thing that Ultimo did in the past. After Eco's death in chapter 20, his new master is Makoto Sayama.
His Karakuri Henge theme seems to be monkeys.
Tropes associated with Regula:
- Bald of Awesome
- Expy: He looks like Jizo from one of Takei's first manga, Butsu Zone.

- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
- Took a Level in Badass: Very much so starting in Chapter 19. It didn't last long though...

Slow

The embodiment of energy (diligence in the English translation). He appears to have a rather feisty personality. He interestingly looks a lot like Machi. As of Chapter 26, his new master is Akitsu Ohtake.

Tropes associated with Koun:
- Actual Pacifist
- Cool Old Guy
- Five-Man Band
- Not So Stoic: In Chapter 19, after Vice blows up his hospital.

- Thou Shalt Not Kill: Due to his experiences as a medic in a war, he is a strict pacifist.
- We Hardly Knew Ye
Pardone/Pardonner
"You're too loud. Shut up and show me your arm." |
Pardone has a calm and quiet personality, but not a very friendly one. He has little respect for Yamato and seems to be the quickest to put him down. Koun is killed by Vice in Chapter 19. His new master is Kiyose Matsumoto.
His Karakuri Henge theme seems to be butterflies.

The master and doji of charity, and members of The Six Perfections.
Yoichi Oizumi
A 42-year-old buisness man. Yoichi is a very polite and kind man, despite being implied to have an even more miserable life than Yamato. Not one to complain, even at the worst of times.
Tropes associated with Yoichi:
- Art Evolution: He looked hunched over and 60 when he first appeared. He now stands up straight and actually looks his age.
- Butt Monkey: Even more so than Yamato.
Yamato: "His life is more miserable than mine!" |
- Cool Bike: Subverted. It's just a normal bike. But you have to admit, him charging in, with Service standing on his back, just makes it seem so much cooler.

- Nice Guy
- Perpetual Smiler: Always with a smile, even when nobody would blame him for frowning.
Service
"We aren't gonna do anything?! I wanted to show my power!" |
The embodiment of charity, who was previously thought to be the only female doji in the whole series. Sadly, in Chapter 23 Service was finally revealed to be a boy.

- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
Hiroshi Kumegawa and Gauge/Goge
The master and doji of meditation, and members of The Six Perfections.
Hiroshi Kumegawa
A 21-year-old street punk, who despite his rather intimmedating apperance, is in the Good Doji Club. Even more surprisingly the master of Goge. Does not like people not using honorifics with his name, especially if they're Machi. Despite their bickering, it's implied that him and Machi are dating. After Vice breaks his neck in chapter 20, he is paralyzed from the neck down, leaving Hibari Oume as Goge's new master.
Tropes associated with Hiroshi:
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Him and Machi.
- Although there seems to be a good chance that they are actually a couple.

Makoto Sayama Makoto Saya Dunstan
"What is that outside? And why is that kid I saw in you room...flying? What's going on?" |
A mysterious 17-year-old girl who is Yamato's crush. Her birthday is the day before the Hundred Machine Funeral. Her family runs a very successful sportswear company. Her personality is very polite, but Takei notes in her character profile that while "she has rescued Yamato from crises many times in the past, her cold reactions deliver even deeper psychological damage." She is the reincarnation of an orphan girl that Yamato took in back in the 12th century.
By Chapter 25 she has become a fellow member of the Good Doji Club and is Regula's new master.
By chapter 33 it's revealed that she's from the future. Actually, she's Dunstan's daughter, Makoto Saya Dunstan.
Tropes associated with Sayama:

- Four-Girl Ensemble: Sayama with her friends.
- Girl Posse: Subverted, as her gang isn't mean or bitchy.
- Heartwarming Orphan / Morality Pet: One of them in her past life.
- Last-Name Basis: Yamato Agari calls Makoto Sayama by her last name, but she uses his first name. He lampshades it once when he starts thinking about what his future life with her would be like, but notes that if that happened, her name wouldn't be Sayama.
- Strangely, not even the other three girls she hangs out with call her Makoto.
- So far, the only person to call her by her first name is Akira.
- It makes more sense when you find out Her name in the 12th century was Saya.
- Strangely, not even the other three girls she hangs out with call her Makoto.
- Living with the Villain: A double whammy. She doesn't know about Rune or Akira.
- Doesn't seem to be the case now that she joined the Good Doji Club.
- Lolicon: Seems to be on the wrong end of it quite a bit. In Ultimo Ulate K spied on her, and it seems in her past life Yamato was pedo for her.
- Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter
- Not So Stoic: Although Sayama isn't really stoic, it was still surprising to see how she reacted to Yamato fighting Edile.
- OOC Is Serious Business: Her usually nice and peaceful expression was replaced with quite the glare when Yamato shows up at her party trying to tell her about Akira. Even Yamato looked scared.
- Ojou

Akitsu Ohtake
"Who're calling brawny, new guy? Interesting... Shall I smite you with my sword?" |
A girl that is part of Sayama's Girl Posse. She's very tall (almost as tall as Yamato, which is quite a feat), but is far from a Gentle Giant. In fact, she has a very sour personality, often ridicules Yamato, threatens Oume, and carries a kendo sword around with her. She does act calmer around Rune, however. Is the new master of Slow as of Chapter 26.
Tropes associated with Akitsu:
- Action Girl
- All Love Is Unrequited: It's all but confirmed that Akitsu has a crush on Rune.
Akitsu: Kodaira! What happened? You're awfully late. |
Akitsu: If anything should happen to Rune, I will kick your ass. |
