Revision as of 22:40, 4 November 2013
These characters are allies to Sonic, but they usually don't have the same central role that Tails and Knuckles do.
Team Rose
A bit more loose as a group than the other teams, they have only had two constant members: Amy and Cream. Their muscle alternates between each of their appearances. In Sonic Heroes, it was Big. In Sonic Free Riders, it was Vector. In the non-game-Canon comic Sonic Universe, it was Blaze.
- Cast Herd: Though not as tight as the other teams. Amy is usually helping Team Sonic instead of managing her own team.
- Image Song: "Follow Me".
- Limit Break: Their Team Blast "Flower Festival" in Sonic Heroes.
- Power Trio
- Three-Man Band
- The Hero: Amy
- The Lancer: Cream
- The Big Guy: Depends; see description above.
Amy Rose
"I know that people fight over the most trivial things. Some people may be selfish, like the professor said... but they're basically good, if they try their best and never give up on their wishes. They always have a reason to be happy; that's why you should help them out." |
Debut: Sonic CD |
= Voiced by Taeko Kawata (Japanese, 1998, 2001-present), Emi Motoi (Japanese, 2000), Lynn Harris (English, 1993), Jennifer Douilard (English, 1999-2004), Lisa Ortiz (English, Sonic X, 2005-2010), Cindy Robinson (English, 2010-present) =
A pink hedgehog girl who really wants Sonic to be her boyfriend. Originally a young girl with a Precocious Crush, she was later revamped to be closer to Sonic's age while still going hog-wild over him.
- Action Girl: Starts turning into one in Sonic Adventure, and fully blossoms into one by Sonic Battle.
- Art Evolution Here's what she used to look like. She was once 8, sporting that look.
- Ascended Fangirl: Started off as a Fan Girl with a Precocious Crush, but has since become one of Sonic's closest friends.
- Badass Adorable: Her weirdness can sometimes obstruct the "Adorable" part, though.
- Badass Normal: In games where she doesn't have super speed.
- Berserk Button: See Mama Bear. Also, suggesting that Sonic doesn't return her feelings.
- Blow You Away:Several attacks in several games show her to have tornado based hammer swings.
- Bob Haircut
- Bratty Half Pint: Was less of this in her original roles, but became even more of this after Sonic X's influence.
- Canon Immigrant: Originated from an obscure manga.
- The Chick: With elements of The Big Guy when she has her mallet.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: If any girl her age or over so much as looks at Sonic, it's Hammer Time.
- Cool Big Sis: A surrogate one to Cream and Tails to a certain degree.
- Cute Bruiser
- Death Glare: In addition to Go Through Me.
- Distaff Counterpart: to Sonic
- Distressed Damsel: Though balanced by having actual utilities and Action Girl traits, she's been playing this role a few odd times, like her first appearance.
- Drop the Hammer: Her Piko Piko Hammer.
- Fan Girl
- Genki Girl
- The Glomp: Since Sonic CD, it's a Running Gag for her to attempt to glomp Sonic, only to end up clinging to another character altogether. She gets it right in Sonic Unleashed, only to believe otherwise due to the Werehog form.
- Go Through Me: In the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, when Silver tries to issue Sonic a killing blow, Amy jumps right in front of him.
- Issued both towards and from her in an episode of Sonic X; Knuckles wants the Chaos Emerald, Amy wants to bash Eggman's skull in, neither are budging.
- Green Eyes
- Originally black.
- Hair Decorations: Always seen wearing a hairband.
- Hair Trigger Temper
- Hammerspace
- The Heart: Her other signature ability (beside skill with a hammer) is single-minded charisma. She has managed to make a combat robot, a pissed-off super-being in the midst of a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, and a vengeful psyker all back down, triggering a Heel Face Turn from two of them in the process. This is (at least part of) the reason why she's a Morality Pet.
- Heart Beat Down : Has had few heart themed attacks since Sonic Adventure 2.
- Hey Its That Voice: Jennifer Douillard (1998-2004) and Lisa Ortiz (2003-2010).
- Hopeless Suitor: Amy loves Sonic, but Sonic isn't interested, no matter what Amy or her fans tell themselves. It doesn't help that, while Sonic clearly at least cares about her as a friend (and occasionally more), Amy is very... adamant... about tying Sonic down. Sometimes more than others.
- Hostage for Macguffin: In Sonic Adventure 2, she served as this for Eggman in exchange for a Chaos Emerald. As well as to lure Sonic into a Death Trap. Good thing he figured out how to use Chaos Control, or he would've been space dust.
- I Know Mortal Kombat: Doing Boxercise to lose weight taught her to actually punch people.
- Image Song: "My Sweet Passion"
- The Ingenue: During her debut in Sonic CD, Amy filled the role of the innocent damsel in distress. This role has since been passed to Cream.
- Intergenerational Friendship: She's twice Cream's age, but they are shown to be close friends, almost akin to Sonic and Tails'.
- Invisibility: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, for some reason.
- Jack of All Stats: She's in between Sonic and Knuckles in terms of speed and strength (thanks to her Piko Piko Hammer). She's even labeled as a Balanced Character in Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games.
- Japanese Pronouns: "Atashi".
- The Knights Who Say Squee: She's become a bit of a heroine in her own right, but she's still crazy for Sonic.
- The Leader: When Team Rose is assembled, she's going to be the leader.
- Loony Fan: As a result of Flanderization, though this has gotten better as of late, depending on the game.
- Love Makes You Crazy: Could be the reason or result of Flanderization.
- Mama Bear: In Sonic 2006. About ready to kick Silver's ass when he was going to finish Sonic off.
- This is present in Sonic Battle as well. Though replace Silver with Rouge, Sonic with Emerl, "finish off" with "steal", and "About ready" to "Proceeds".
- Morality Pet: Frequent role in later games, perhaps most notably for E-102 Gamma and Shadow the Hedgehog.
- Never Bareheaded
- Nice Girl: Usually...
- Odd Name Out: She's the only character so far with a conventional 'human' name, barring Tails' Punny Name.
- Operation Jealousy: In Sonic Chronicles, Amy claims to have found a new beau named "Dexter", but he's never shown. Depending on the dialog options you choose, Sonic suspects she just made him up to spite him and/or Amy will admit he doesn't exist.
- Parental Substitute: To Emerl in Sonic Battle.
- Pink Girl Blue Boy: With Sonic, literally and figuratively.
- Pink Means Feminine
- Plucky Girl
- Precocious Crush/Smitten Teenage Girl: Pre-Adventure, though she isn't too far off post-Adventure either.
- Rose Haired Girl
- Rousseau Was Right: Core part of her philosophy. The quote above was the very same one she used on Shadow that caused him to back down on his omnicidal revenge plot (a CMOA for her).
- Running Gag: See The Glomp.
- Seers / My Significance Sense Is Tingling: She can read Tarot Cards to predict the future or know what's happening, although this isn't often mentioned or used.
- Sonic Detecting Radar
- Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome: Between Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Sonic Adventure. The Archie comics turned this into a Plot Relevant Age Up by providing a handwave. Generations seems to be doing away with this by implying that the entire cast had aged normally from kids to young teens between the Genesis and Dreamcast games - Amy's just had the most obvious change.
- Species Surname: Her full name, according to Sonic Chronicles, is "Amy Rose the Hedgehog", though this has yet to appear in other sources.
- Stalker With a Crush: She should be the picture for this trope.
- Super Speed: In games where she's not a Badass Normal.
- Took a Level In Badass: Largely her plot in Sonic Adventure; keeps increasing from there.
- Trademark Favourite Food: Soft-served ice-cream.
- Tsundere: Particularly in Sonic X, though she tends towards type B.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend: Well, self-proclaimed girlfriend, at least.
- Weight Woe: In Sonic Battle, Amy is obsessed with boxercise and dieting in order to get in shape and impress Sonic, using Emerl as a coach.
Cream the Rabbit
"A friend of a friend is always a friend!" |
First appearance: Sonic Mega Collection (as artwork) |
= Voiced by Sayaka Aoki (Japanese), Sarah Wulfeck (English, 2004), Rebecca Honig (English, Sonic X, 2005-2009), Michelle Ruff (English, 2010-present) =
A very young rabbit who is overly polite, and whose best friend is a Chao named Cheese. She is the only character with a visible family member in the games who isn't dead: a loving, caring mother named Vanilla. And she has another Chao, named Chocola.
- A Rabbit And Her Chao
- Bow Ties Are Cool: Cheese.
- Brown Eyes
- Cheerful Child
- The Chick
- Cool Chao: Cheese usually does most of the attacking for Cream.
- Cousin Oliver
- Cowardly Lion: As she's a young child, she is easily frightened. However, she does have her moments of bravery, and will get involved if she has to.
- The Cutie
- Disappeared Dad
- Distressed Damsel: In Sonic Advance 2, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Her mother was also one of these in Sonic Advance 2.
- Ears As Hair: Her ears resemble Girlish Pigtails.
- Empathy Pet: Cheese often mirrors Cream's feelings.
- Everythings Better With Bunnies
- Flight: Is able to fly by flapping her ears.
- Fragile Flower: She's usually a Cheerful Child, but she's highly sensitive and prone to tears.
- Free Range Children: The only character shown to have a parent, and she's still seen to go wherever she wants, often without supervision.
- Hot Mom: Some would consider Vanilla to be this.
- Humanoid Female Animal: Vanilla.
- The Ingenue
- Intergenerational Friendship: Most of her friends are twice her age and over.
- Japanese Politeness: With her tendency of bowing politely and calling everyone "Mr." or "Miss", Cream seems distinctly more Japanese than the other characters.
- Japanese Pronouns: "Watashi".
- Kawaiiko
- Kid Hero: Cream is tied with Charmy as the youngest of the heroes, at age 6.
- The Lancer: She's Amy's best friend and acts as a calmer, nicer foil to Amy's Tsundere ways. She also acts as a Lancer of sorts to Blaze, as Cream helps her get over her antisocial ways.
- Loyal Chao Companion
- Meaningful Name
- Morality Pet
- Multicolored Fur
- Nice Girl
- Pint Sized Powerhouse: Cheese can bust through robots with ease.
- Sailor Fuku: Her dress resembles a simplified version of one of these.
- Skip of Innocence: In Sonic Battle.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Cream looks a lot like her mother outisde of attire and body shape.
- Sweet Tooth
- Tagalong Kid
- Talking To Herself: In the English and Japanese versions, the same voice actress for Cream also voiced Vanilla.
- Ridiculously Cute Critter
- Technical Pacifist: She dislikes violence, but will get involved in a fight if there are no other options, though it's often Cheese that does all the fighting. Her mother seems to be an Actual Pacifist.
- Theme Naming/Punny Name: Pair her up with either her mother or Cheese and you get "vanilla cream" or "cream cheese".
- Trademark Favorite Food: Ice cream; Cheese's is coconuts.
Big the Cat
"Froggy! Where are you?" |
Debut: Sonic Adventure |
= Voiced by Shun Yashiro (Japanese, 1998-2001), Takashi Nagasako (Japanese, 2003-present), Jon St. John (English, 1999-2004, 2009), Oliver Wyman (English, Sonic X, 2010), Kyle Hebert (English, 2010-present) =
Very large purple cat who lives in the forest with his best friend, a frog named Froggy. He primary trait is his strength that rivals that of Knuckles. His true motives are that frog, unless you are playing Chronicles...
- A Cat And His Frog
- Beady Eyed Loser
- Berserk Button: Don't threaten his frog or his friends.
- Big Brother Instinct: Seems to play this role in Team Rose, especially for Cream. Bullying her is about the one point he is shown to be genuinely angered.
- The Big Guy: When a part of Team Rose, he's the muscle.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Especially in Sonic Chronicles.
- Crouching Moron Hidden Badass: While he is seemingly dim and klutzy, he can pick up boulders and cars easily, exchange his fishing lure with an inner tube and a flail: Both on fire, and manages to stand up to not only Chaos, but Metal Overlord, actually telling the latter that they would pay for their actions prior to the fight.
- The Ditz
- Genius Ditz: Implied to be, considering he can pilot the Tornado 2 without destroying it as well as Eggman's machine in multiplayer mode for Sonic Adventure 2.
- Dumb Muscle
- Epic Flail: See above.
- The Fool
- Funny Background Event: In Sonic Adventure 2, he can often be seen in silly situations in the background of certain stages and boss battles.
- Furry Ear Dissonance: His ears are much longer and pointier than a normal cat's.
- Gentle Giant
- Image Song: "Lazy Days (Livin' in Paradise)"
- Japanese Pronouns: "Boku".
- Kindhearted Simpleton: One of the dimmest protagonists, as well as one of the most gentle and soft tempered.
- Mega Neko: Appropriately, as he's a big cat.
- Mighty Glacier
- Lightning Bruiser: Like Knuckles, he's not hampered by loops and just runs through them.
- Multicolored Fur
- Nice Guy
- Non Standard Character Design: His facial structure and limb proportions are different to most of the other characters.
- The Other Darrin: He was originally voiced by the late Shun Yashiro in the Japanese versions. After his death, he was replaced by Takashi Nagasako.
- Parasol Parachute: In Sonic Heroes.
- Put On a Bus: A Long Bus Trip at that. Sega has announced that they have retired him due to contributing little gameplay and story wise to the series.
- Ryu and Ken: with Knuckles.
- Simpleton Voice; Once provided by the guy who voiced Duke Nukem!
- Stout Strength
- Trademark Favourite Food: Fish.
- Unexpected Gameplay Change: Sonic Adventure; In an action-platform game series, Big is a fisherman.
The Chaotix
Espio: "I've got a bad feeling about this..." |
Debut: Knuckles Chaotix (apparently non-canon) |
Vector: Voiced by Kenta Miyake (Japanese), Mark Biagi (English, 2004), Jimmy Zoppi (English, Sonic X, 2005), Dan Green (English, 2007-2010), Keith Silverstein (English, 2010-present)
Espio: Voiced by Yūki Masuda (Japanese), Bill Corkery (English, 2004), David Wills (English, 2005-2010), Troy Baker (English, 2010-present)
Charmy: Voiced by Yōko Teppōzuka (Japanese), Emily Corkery (English, 2004), Amy Birnbaum (English, 2005-2010), Colleen O Shaughnessey (English, 2010-present))
First appeared in Knuckles Chaotix, where they team up with Knuckles to foil one of Robotnik's plans. Consists of Template:Media, a music lover with a Brooklyn accent; Template:Media, a Ninja with powers of invisibility; hyperactive kid Template:Media; the pacifistic Mighty the Armadillo (one time member of the group); and robots Heavy and Bomb. Dropped off the radar until Sonic Heroes, where Vector, Espio, and Charmy run a detective agency (Mighty, Heavy, and Bomb are still AWOL). The Archie comics have developed the Chaotix into Knuckles's supporting Five Man Band and added new members.
Tropes applying to Mighty don't appear here; he has his own section below.
- Action Bomb: Bomb.
- Adult Child: Vector, though the oldest of the team, has moments where he doesn't act quite his age. Arguing constantly with six-year-old Charmy doesn't help much.
- Beware My Stinger Tail: Charmy, of course.
- Big Eater: Vector, who dreams of having 50 five-course meals in Sonic Free Riders.
- Black Eyes: The main three in their first appearance.
- Bratty Half Pint: Charmy, much to Vector's annoyance.
- Breath Weapon: Vector in Heroes.
- Brown Eyes: Vector.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: The Chaotix are goofy, clumsy, and mostly inefficient as detectives, but they always get the job done.
- Butt Monkey: Vector in particular in the Archie comics, though the whole team often act as luckless comic relief in most incarnations (particularly in Sonic X).
- Canon Dis Continuity: As far as Sega is concerned, Chaotix isn't part of the series and Sonic Heroes is the team's official debut.
- Canon Immigrant: Most characters were brought in from elsewhere in the Sonic mythos: Charmy came from an obscure old manga, and Vector was a rejected concept for the very first Sonic.
- Cast Herd: They are rarely ever seen apart.
- Except in Sonic Free Riders, where Vector is part of Team Rose, but the rest of Team Chaotix is neither seen nor mentioned.
- Espio works alongside Silver in Sonic Rivals 2. At least Vector actually has something to do with this game.
- Vector's the only member who shows up in Sonic Chronicles, but the other two get mentioned (and even then, only as "Team Chaotix").
GUN Commander: "Vector the Crocodile and Team Chaotix have volunteered to scout for further clues. They're on the channel now." |
- Vector is the only playable one in the Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games series, but Espio and Charmy routinely appear as officials or NPCs.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Heavy and Bomb, who disappeared almost immediately even in the comics (though they would resurface much later apart from the Chaotix).
- Cloudcuckoolander: Charmy. Vector has his moments as well, especially in Sonic X.
- The Comically Serious: Espio's attempts to uphold a mystical and dignified composure are usually destroyed by his wackier teammates.
- Cross Dressing Voices: Charmy, again.
- Eyes of Gold: Espio.
- Face of a Thug: As a big buff crocodile, Vector looks somewhat rough, but he's really a big softie.
- Flechette Storm: Espio does this in Sonic X with explosive shuriken.
- Flight: Charmy is almost always in flight, and is the Flight of the team.
- Fuuma Shuriken: Espio uses large shuriken in Sonic Heroes.
- Genius Bruiser: Vector is both the muscle and the brains behind the bunch.
- Alternately, Espio is the smartest member, but Vector makes the Zany Schemes in order to lead the group; depending on whether or not you believe Sonic X or Sonic Heroes.
- Goggles Do Nothing: Charmy rarely, if ever, wears his helmet-goggles over his eyes.
- Green Eyed Monster: In Sonic X at least, the Chaotix are occasionally shown to resent Sonic for his popularity and bravado, while they struggle to make ends meet as detectives.
- Antihero Worshipper: From Charmy's point of view Shadow is the greatest animal to walk this planet.
- Image Song: "Team Chaotix"
- Intergenerational Friendship: Vector, Espio, and Charmy are 20, 16, and 6, respectively.
- Invisibility: Espio via blending in with his surroundings. Named Ninja Art: Camouflage in Sonic Generations.
- Japanese Pronouns: "Ore" and "Oresama" for Vector, "Jibun" for Espio, and "Boku" for Charmy.
- Joke Character: Heavy and Bomb in Chaotix.
- Kid Appeal Character: Charmy.
- Keet: Charmy.
- Killed Off for Real: Heavy and Bomb, in the comics.
- The Lancer: Espio.
- Large and In Charge: Vector is much taller than the rest of the team.
- Limit Break: Their Team Blast, "Chaotix Recital", in Sonic Heroes.
- Make Me Wanna Shout: One of Vector's Breath Weapons.
- Meaningful Name: Espio's name comes from either "espionage", or the Spanish word for "I spy". Vector was initially this, due to being able to air-dash in eight different direction in his Chaotix appearance (hence "Vector") but this was scrapped for his Sonic Heroes reinvention, making his name another Odd Name Out.
- Vector can hurl Classic Sonic along a trajectory in Generations, making his name meaningful again.
- Mr. Vice Guy: Vector is not only the greediest, he is gluttonous and somewhat short tempered. Beneath it all however, he's a playful softie, and implied to take a few free cases to those who deserve it.
- Musical Assassin: Their Team Blast in Sonic Heroes destroys robots by singing and playing instruments.
- Brown Note: They sound dreadful. No wonder Metal Sonic decided to copy their data.
- Ninja: Espio.
- Odd Name Out: Unlike most of the characters' names, Charmy's don't seem particularly meaningful. Vector's name was initially meaningful, but became this as of Sonic Heroes.
- In the original western bios at least, Charmy was stated as having a polite demeanor about him, ie. a charming personality. Given his later incarnation's character, his name could almost be considered ironic.
- Only Sane Man: Of the three, Espio.
- Perpetual Poverty
- Petal Power: Espio can make a storm of leaves in Heroes.
- Playing With Fire: One of Vector's attacks in Sonic Heroes has him spitting out flames.
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Power Trio
- Comic Trio: Vector is the schemer, Charmy is the dumb follower, Espio is reasonable but powerless.
- Freudian Trio: Vector is the Id, Charmy is the Ego, Espio is the Superego.
- Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Subverted with Vector and Espio for the most part. While they have their obnoxious aspects, they are both thoroughly benevolent characters.
- Ret Gone: Heavy and Bomb, who haven't appeared since the now non-canon Knuckles' Chaotix.
- Shout Out: In Sonic Free Riders Vector has a green and black motorcycle called Hard Boiled. Why does that sound familliar?
- The Stoic: Espio, who usually shares Straight Man duties with Vector.
- Super Speed: Espio is the "Speed" of the three.
- Super Strength: Vector is the "Power" of the three.
- Teleporters and Transporters: Charmy can do this by pollinating flowers.
- The Power of Rock: Their blast attack in Sonic Heroes.
- Token Wholesome: These characters wear more clothing than other males, with Charmy wearing the most.
- Trademark Favourite Food: Charmy's is, fittingly, honey. Vector has a huge appetite, but bubblegum seems to be his personal favorite. Espio supposedly likes apples.
Blaze the Cat
"I have to live with my curse.... my flames... because of my powers, I have always been alone... so that's why I must do this alone... I have to do this myself!" |
Debut: Sonic Rush |
= Voiced by Nao Takamori (Japanese), Bella Hudson (English, 2005-2010), Laura Bailey (English, 2010-present) =
A fire-wielding cat from, ah, someplace else. Guardian of the Sol Emeralds.
- Action Girl
- Adorkable: Whenever her shyness or fear of heights comes to the forefront.
- Anti-Heroine: Starts out as Type III, being an antisocial loner. She evolves into more of a pure hero over the course of Sonic Rush Series with Cream's influence.
- Badass Princess
- Bare Your Midriff: In Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games.
- Barrier Maiden: She becomes Iblis's new can. Then the reset button got pushed...
- Beneath the Mask: She comes across as level-headed and reserved, but is far more emotional and insecure than she lets on, though these traits do come to surface from time to time in some games.
- Berserk Button: Don't tell her why you'd put the world in danger, like for gaining ultimate power, or to make it your plaything; you're just going to unleash her repressed anger issues.
- Brutal Honesty: If the Bratty Half Pint is a nuisance, she'll tell it to her face.
- Compassionate Critic: It's implied that she only did this so Marine wouldn't follow them into danger and get herself hurt. The cutscene where it happens is even titled Cruel to Be Kind.
- Cool Big Sis: Has played this role towards Silver (despite being the same age), Cream, and it's implied she may have become one to Marine.
- Combat Stilettos
- The Comically Serious: Her poor social skills (and being the one serious-minded member of the team) lean her into this, Depending On the Writer at least.
- Continuity Snarl: Not even Sega themselves can decide whether she is from the future (according to Sonic '06) or another dimension (according to the Sonic Rush series).
- Sonic Generations has resolved this by going with the Rush origin for her... Only to mess it up further when she says "I never thought I would be in Crisis City again."
- Cute Little Fangs: In Sonic Generations.
- Don't Call Me Your Highness: Hates it when Guardon calls her Your Highness, and frequently corrects him.
- She's called "Miss Blaze" in London Party, suggesting she also doesn't like to be called "Princess".
- Everythings Better With Princesses: Despite a mistranslation calling her a queen in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 manual, both Sonic Rush Series titles refer to her as a princess.
- Eyes of Gold
- Flip Flop of God: Blaze's home goes back and forth between being an alternate dimension [1] and the future [2].
- It's also possibly averted, as all official media says the Blaze is from the Sol Dimension. Who knows how she ended up in Sonic's universe's future.
- Friendless Background: In the Sonic Rush Series; in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, however, she was Silver's childhood friend.
- Good Is Not Nice: A mild example (cold, detached loner) at first. Gets better
- Graceful Ladies Like Purple
- Grumpy Bear: In Sonic Rush. Toned down later on, but still shows up from time to time, Depending On the Writer.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, she becomes Iblis's vessel and seals herself in another dimension.
- Image Song: Vela Nova.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Rather aloof and a bit above it all, but socially awkward and insecure.
- She also becomes very defensive and snappy when Silver claims that he could have taken the robots out without her in Sonic Colors, immediately claiming that she could have taken them out without him as well.
- I Work Alone: At first.
- Ineffectual Loner: At first. She's still a bit of a loner after her Character Development, but accepts help from others far easier.
- Informed Ability: We see less of her guarding the Sol Emeralds and more of her hopping over to Sonic's dimension to have fun.
- Informed Attribute: Word of God has said that she wears her purple cape to hide the fact that her body can control flames, which she used to be bullied for, hinting that her body may be scarred or otherwise affected by her powers; however, she will take it off in a pinch where she has to use her powers. So far, this has not been seen in any game she has appeared in.
- Also Did Not Do the Research, as Blaze doesn't wear a cape. She wears a coat. A tailcoat to be exact, no pun intended.
- While she does wear a cape on a concept art for Sonic Rush, it's not purple, it's white (and more like a capelet anyway).
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Cream and Marine.
- Irony: She's an agile feline who can jump high and pull amazing aerial stunts, but she's terrified of heights. On the flip side, despite being a fire cat, she averts Cats Hate Water and is shown in Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games to be a good swimmer.
- Jack of All Stats: Like Amy, she is able to hit hard enough (thanks to her flames) and run substantially fast. And she also is classified as a Balanced Character in Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games.
- Japanese Pronouns: "Watashi".
- Lady of War
- Like Brother and Sister: With Silver. When they're not being outright lovers, of course.
- Married to The Job: She initially pushed people away in part because of her duties as Princess and Guardian of the Sol Emeralds; until she learned that carrying the world solely on her own shoulders was putting the world at more risk than allowing others to help.
- Modest Royalty
- Multicolored Hair
- No Social Skills: In Sonic Rush, the other characters' overt friendliness clearly confused her, and she is known to be direct and blunt in her approach. She has since improved, though she is still somewhat brusque.
- Perpetual Frowner: Before and during Sonic Rush; she was honestly surprised when Cream pointed out that she was smiling.
- In the Mario and Sonic series, she is portrayed as much more jovial and enthusiastic, frequently displaying a large wide open smile, suggesting she maybe has more a Serious Business treatment of her duties rather than negative in personality.
- Personality Powers: Played with. Usually, unlike most fire-wielders, she plays the Blue Oni to her more reckless and emotional teammates, however, when things get tense...
- Pettanko
- A Cup Angst: Word of God says she is less than thrilled about this.
- Playing With Fire: Obviously; her name is Blaze the Cat, after all.
- Power of Friendship: Had to learn about this before she could utilise the power of the Sol Emeralds.
- Purple Is Powerful
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: She kicks people's asses into next week.
- Satellite Character: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, her sole purpose seems to be being Silver's sister-figure.
- Shrinking Violet: And she's purple, to boot!
- Socially Awkward Hero
- Sport Catsuit: Her Sonic Riders outfit.
- Sugar and Ice Personality: Tends to be cold and aloof towards strangers due to shyness, but once she warms up to someone she shows a caring, albeit awkward and brusque, side to her.
- Super Mode: Burning Blaze; so far, she's the only female character in the entire series to have one.
- Through a Face Full of Fur: Percival blushed when Sonic saved her in Black Knight. Blaze also blushes in some cutscenes of Sonic Rush Series.
- Token Wholesome: Out of the anthro cast, Blaze tends to cover the most fur, barring Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games (where she bares her midriff).
- Tomboyish Ponytail
- Tsurime Eyes
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes: As shown in both Sonic Rush titles, she has a case of acrophobia.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: She is very mature and intelligent for her age.
- Women Are Wiser: Albeit Depending On the Writer. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 and Sonic and The Black Knight, she is much more composed and "normal" acting than her other team members. In titles such as the Sonic Rush Series, however, she is a hammy Grumpy Bear.
- Younger Than They Look: She's only 14 years old, the same age as Silver, but is quite often mistaken to be older due to her mature appearance and personality.
Silver the Hedgehog
"I will protect the future!" |
Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 |
= Voiced by Daisuke Ono (Japanese), Pete Capella (English, 2006-2010), Quinton Flynn (English, 2010-present) =
A telekinetic hedgehog from either the future or Blaze's dimension.
- Adorably Precocious Child: He's a little older than usual for this trope, but he is portrayed as a young boy who carries the world on his shoulders.
- Adorkable
- Anime Quills
- Captain Obvious
Silver: I can't deflect lasers with my telekinesis. |
- Carpet of Virility: He has a tuft of fur much like Shadow's, but subverted in that he is less competent and mature than some other characters.
- Catch and Return: His speciality.
- Daisuke Ono
- Determinator: Much like Sonic, nothing will keep Silver down too long.
- Expy: His role and character is somewhat similar to Trunks. His entry in the game script even compares the two.
- Eyes of Gold
- For Great Justice / For Happiness: Sometimes he doesn't know what to do due to these two motives clashing; he wants people to be happy and to bring peace to his world, but he also wants to bring justice upon those who harm the future. Sometimes he leans more towards one side than the other.
- Friendly Rival: Seems to take this role in later titles, particularly in his boss in Sonic Generations. He is giving Sonic all he's got, and they both seem to be enjoying it.
- Future Badass: Subverted; he's younger and less experienced than Sonic.
- Hedgehogs Are Telekinetic In The Future
- Image Song: "Dreams of an Absolution".
- Informed Flaw: He's been stated to be insecure when he's alone, but he's never really seemed to be for more than a moment.
Silver: (having just arrived in the present, separated from Blaze) Blaze? Blaze! *looks around for a few moments* Now I must fight for the future! |
- Inspector Javert: Hoo boy. He caused a lot of problems for Sonic in Sonic 06. Said problems included kicking Sonic's ass twice, allowing Eggman to kidnap Elise yet again. Ironically, Eggman kidnapping Elise those times actually might have turned out better in the short run, given what happened when Mephiles killed Sonic himself in front of Elise.
- Interface Screw: His special ability in Sonic Rivals has him using his powers to scramble the opponent's controls.
- Japanese Pronouns: "Ore".
- Kid From the Future
- Knight Templar: Although (mostly) kept in check by Pet the Dog moments.
- Large Ham: "IT'S NO UUUUSE!!!"
- Mind Over Matter
- Nice Guy: He can be one when he isn't stressing out about some future crisis.
- Odd Friendship: He's seen high-fiving Yoshi at the Winter games.
- Psychic Powers
- Super Mode: Super Silver.
- Time Travel: Any plot where he appears will involve this.
- Took a Level In Badass: His powers are much stronger in Sonic Generations, to the point where he can compress tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of cars and debris into a massive ball that chases Sonic.
- Took a Level In Jerkass: In the Sonic Rivals games, he acts much ruder to everyone than in his debut. He seems to have gotten better in his cameo in Sonic Colors DS.
- Well Intentioned Extremist
- What Could Have Been: Was originally depicted as a green eyed mink named Venice. In fact, Silver was said to have gone through fifty concept designs before settling on his final look.
- White Furred Pretty Boy
Tikal the Echidna
"The servers are the seven Chaos. Chaos is power... Power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos." |
Debut: Sonic Adventure |
= Voiced by Kaori Aso (Japanese), Elara Distler (English, 1999-2001), Karen Neill (English, Sonic X) =

- Badass Pacifist
- Bare Your Midriff
- Blue Eyes
- The Chiefs Daughter
- Everythings Better With Princesses
- Exposition Fairy
- Friend to All Living Things
- Heroic Sacrifice: She sealed herself and Chaos away with the Master Emerald's power to prevent further destruction from happening.
- Last Of Her Kind: After Chaos wipes out the Echidna clan.
- Mysterious Waif
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: She's technically thousands of years old, but is physically 14.
- Soul Jar: Her soul, along with Chaos, were sealed within the Master Emerald.
- Spirit Advisor
- There Is Another
Chip
"Want some chocolate?" |
Debut: Sonic Unleashed |
= Voiced by Ryoko Shiraishi (Japanese), Tony Salerno (English) =
Sonic's little flying sidekick from Sonic Unleashed. Also known as Light Gaia.
- Beware the Nice Ones: As if it needed to be said, Chip's Crowning Moment of Awesome comes when he winds up and delivers a friggin' haymaker of justice to Dark Gaia's face with the Temple Guardian.
- Not to mention slugging the ever-living crap out of Dark Gaia and then holding it down so Sonic could go for the Coup De Grace.
- Big Eater
- But Now I Must Go: The final step of his Heroic Sacrifice.
- The Cameo: He appears as a Mii Costume in London 2012.
- Does Not Like Spam: If it's not sweet, don't expect him to be overly fond of it.
- Easy Amnesia
- Everythings Better With Chocolate
- Eyes of Gold
- Keet
- Lovable Coward: In the Night of the Werehog short.
- Nature Spirit
- Pals With Jesus: His friendship with Sonic is revealed to be this.
- Remember the New Guy
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: He explains he's older than Earth!
- Ridiculously Cute Critter
- Sweet Tooth
- Third Person Person: In the Japanese version.
- Trademark Favourite Food: Chocolate, and Sundae Supreme.
- Tragic Keepsake: His necklace, which Sonic places on his bracelet in memory of Chip.
Emerl
"Show... power... OR I sh...all ob...ey... Sha...ll conqu...er a...ll.." |
Debut: Sonic Battle |
An ancient robot called a Gizoid that can learn to copy the traits and skills of others; Emerl is a unique model that can also absorb Chaos energies. Said to have wiped out the civilization that made him. However, he picks up better traits by hanging out with Sonic and his friends -- but has to be destroyed once his old programming kicks in.
Only appears in Sonic Battle, but has been referred to since. Sonic Advance 3 has Robotnik build his own Gizoid, Gemerl, that can merge with machines. Sonic Chronicles later explains that he and the rest of the Gizoids were made by the Nocturnus clan of echidnas.
- Badass Automaton
- AI Is a Crapshoot: Played with throughout Sonic Battle.
- Anti Anti Christ: To a degree. He was the most powerful of many robots with the power to level an entire civilization. Emerl, thanks to the bond he created with Sonic & co., goes on to help save the world... at the cost of his life.
- Back From the Dead: Gemerl is actually a rebuilt and reprogrammed Emerl. After being defeated, Tails gets rid of the program that made him so violently loyal to Eggman, effectively reviving Emerl.
- The Cameo: His name appears as a random name for save files in Sonic Colors.
- Character Customization: Due to his nature as a Gizoid, you can assign him any of the characters' movesets in Sonic Battle, even the Idle Animations and color schemes.
- I Cannot Self Terminate
- Evil Counterpart: It's hinted that he was this to Shadow in their past.
- From a Certain Point of View: The Nocturnus appear to have been drawn into the Twilight Cage when they got too powerful, thanks in no small part to their Gizoid armies -- and Emerl was the pinnacle of that technology, so he did lead to their downfall according to Professor Gerald's research.
- Mega Manning
- One Winged Angel: Gemerl turns into an orb with flexible arms and lasers capable of stunning Super Sonic.
- Override Command: After Emerl went out of control in the ARK and was sealed away, Professor Gerald, who couldn't find a way to destroy his core, installed a free-willed emotions-based AI program into him should Emerl ever awaken and act this way again. The phrase to activate it was "Bring hope to humanity", after Maria's last words.
- Robot Buddy: To nearly the entire recurring cast, but mostly for Cream.
- SNK Boss: When you face Emerl awakened as the Gizoid, he has access to every Ultimate Skill available.
- The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: As the player has their Skill Points capped at 500, there is no way a player could replicate this feat outside of hacking.
- Superpower Meltdown: As shown in Sonic Battle and Sonic Advance 3, too much energy or too many copied abilities causes him to go berserk.
Princess Elise III
"We give thanks for the blessed flames. May we always continue to have peace. Sun of Soleanna, guide and watch over us with your eternal light..." |
Debut: Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) |
= Voiced by Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese), Lacey Chabert (English). =
The Princess of Soleanna who appeared as Sonic's human love interest (though the attraction is pretty much one-sided on Elise's part) in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.
- Blue Eyes
- The Cameo: Appears as a card in Sonic Rivals and in the credits of Sonic Generations.
- Distressed Damsel: She literally seems to be unable to go more than 5 minutes without being kidnapped by Eggman.
- Demonic Possession: Mild form: She was used as the host to seal away Iblis, and it is heavily implied that several of her powers stemmed from Iblis being sealed within her. Other than that, however, Iblis doesn't seem to take any control over her.
- Everythings Better With Princesses
- Foil: She could be considered the foil for Amy Rose; their only similarity being the fact that they have the hots for the titular character.
- Hey Its That Voice: She is voiced by Eliza Thornberry! In Japanese she's voiced by Aerith!
- I Just Want to Be Normal
- Interspecies Romance: She had a crush on Sonic, and the two share awkward "romantic" moments.
- MacGuffin Girl: She's the vessel for the Flames of Disaster, Iblis.
- Neutral Female
- Stunt Casting: She's voiced by Lacey Chabert.
- The Stoic: Her father told her to not cry about anything. Turns out there's a very good reason why she shouldn't cry...
- True Loves Kiss: Used in conjunction with the Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic. Its reception was...less than pleasant.
Professor Pickle
"How dare they call this culinary concoction food? Look here, do you see this sorry excuse for a sandwich? The bread should be no less than 3/4 of an inch thick. Upon it, one tablespoon of mayonnaise and a pinch of black pepper. The contents FRESH cucumber sliced THINLY if you please! Am I quite right, Tails?" |
Debut:Sonic Unleashed |
= Voiced by Cho (Japanese), Dan Green (English) =
A well known professor from Spagonia. His knowledge helps Sonic over the course of the story.
- Absent Minded Professor
- Big Ol Eyebrows
- Collection Sidequest: He loves souvenirs from all around the world. Collecting them all nets you an achievement/trophy.
- Cool Old Guy
- Hey Its That Voice: You might recognize his Japanese voice as a certain gentleman skeleton musician.
- His English voice is also shared with Mephiles, Knuckles, and the Apotos Ice Cream Guy.
- Mr. Exposition
- Meaningful Name: "Pickle" refers to his love of cucumbers.
- Picky Eater: He's very particular about how he likes his food, as his quote above demonstrates.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Cucumber sandwiches, if made right. In fact, he was more worried about how cucumber sandwiches should be made rather than his own safety when he was captured by Dr. Eggman.
Marine the Raccoon
"I don't have what it takes. I don't think I can do all this adventuring on my own. But I'm not going to give up. I need to keep trying harder and harder until I can do it!" |
Debut: Sonic Rush Adventure |
An exciteable and hyperactive young raccoon from Blaze's dimension who dreams of having epic adventures.
- Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny
- Australian Accent: In the English version, she speaks with an exaggerated one.
- Blue Eyes
- Bratty Half Pint: Much to everyone's chagrin. Blaze calls her out on it near the end of Sonic Rush Adventure:
Blaze: Since you don't seem to understand what we're getting at, I'll just say it: You're a nuisance! |
- Bungling Inventor: She improves with this on her second attempt to build a ship.
- Crouching Moron Hidden Badass: Managed to get the Jewelled Sceptre back whilst being held hostage and seems to have some kind of power that she uses towards the end of the game.
- Did Not Do the Bloody Research: The English-language version of the game gives her an Australian dialect. At one point she uses the term "bugger", meaning that the UK version of the game had to be awarded a 12+ age rating, despite otherwise being a totally innocuous platformer suitable for all ages. Oops.
- Distaff Counterpart/Expy: To Tails. Tails was even a raccoon at one point in design.
- Genki Girl: And how!
- Girlish Pigtails: Highlighting her childish personality.
- And they're shaped like boomerangs.
- The Idiot From Osaka: In the Japanese version, she speaks in the Kansai Dialect.
- Impossibly Low Neckline
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Implied a few times in Sonic Rush Adventure.
- Ki Attacks/Making a Splash: No one's really sure which due to the DS's limited graphics, but she has some kind of power that she uses to save Blaze and Sonic near the end of Sonic Rush Series Adventure.
- Kid Appeal Character
- Just a Kid: Marine herself is aware of this, noting that nobody would believe that she retrieved the Jewelled Sceptre because she's a kid.
- The Load: Seen as this through most of Sonic Rush Adventure.
- Motor Mouth
- Mouthy Kid
- Multicolored Hair
- Neat Freak: According to her Sonic Channel profile.
- Parental Abandonment: Her parents are nowhere in sight. The Coconut Crew appear to be the closest she has to a Parental Substitute.
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Plucky Girl
- Rascally Raccoon
- Small Town Boredom: Bored of life on Windmill Island, she really wants to go adventuring and snatches the chance when Sonic and Tails wind up on Seagull Beach.
- Tagalong Kid
- Ted Baxter: Thinks she's the "captain", and doesn't listen to anyone else. She vows to grow up a bit in the end.
- Tomboy
- Why Did It Have To Be Ghosts?
Mighty the Armadillo
= Voiced by Yusuke Numata (Japanese, 1993) =
One of the more obscure Sonic characters, Mighty the Armadillo is an old friend of Sonic the Hedgehog. He is similar in speed to Sonic, but is apparently stronger, hence his name. He has made two appearances: 1993's Sega Sonic the Hedgehog Arcade game, and Knuckles Chaotix in 1995. He has not appeared since, save for a nod to him via a missing poster in Sonic Generations. With that said, he has made infrequent appearances in the Archie Sonic comic series.
- Black Eyes: In his game appearances.
- Blue Eyes: In his comic appearances.
- The Cameo: On a missing poster in Sonic Generations.
- Canon Dis Continuity: His Chaotix appearance is treated as such, hence why his missing poster says "Missing since 1993", not "Missing since 1995".
- Canon Immigrant: Became a minor character in the Archie Sonic universe.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Has not made an appearance in the franchise since Sega Sonic the Hedgehog, judging by his missing poster in Sonic Generations (although he did make a second appearance in Knuckles Chaotix, it is not counted due to Chaotix's non-canon status).
- Expy / Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He is used as a stand-in for Sonic in Knuckles Chaotix, with his sprites being obvious doll-ups of Sonic. This was presumably done to put more focus on Knuckles being the star of the game.
- Forgotten Childhood Friend
- Informed Ability: He is apparently a strong character, hence his name, but it is never shown in the games.
- Meaningful Name: Mainly in the comics.
- Removable Shell: In Segasonic arcade, his shell will fly off of him during a fall!
- Super Speed: Roughly as fast as Sonic in his game appearances.
- Super Strength: Again, in the comics.
- Technical Pacifist: His backstory in the games claims this.
- Wall Jump: In his Chaotix appearance.
Ray the Flying Squirrel
= Voiced by Hinako Yoshino (Japanese, 1993) =
Another of Sonic's early friends. Like with Mighty, he has been missing from the franchise ever since his sole game appearance in 1993, save for a nod to him in Sonic Generations. He has made infrequent appearances in the Archie Sonic comics, fortunately.
- Canon Immigrant: Like Mighty, he became a minor recurring character in the Archie Sonic comics.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Even moreso than Mighty. Mighty at least got two game appearances!
- Flight: Allegedly, but it is not shown in-game.
- Forgotten Childhood Friend
