Layla, Nina, Brooke and Chloe

Eerie Cuties is a webcomic created and drawn by Gisèle Lagacé which started on started on June 1, 2009 and follows the adventures of Layla and Nina Delacroix, two vampire sisters, at Charybdis Heights. So far they have met a French teacher with a possessed arm, a young succubus, a Catboy, a Werewolf and a masked janitor. As with her previous works, the comic is a mix of slice-of-life and sitcom set within a school atmosphere, most of the jokes being typical of a series set in high school, but in a supernatural one.

It's co-written by both Gisèle Lagacé and Dave Zero1, with colors done by Miguel Marques in the first volume. With the shift to full page black & white manga style, inks (and other inputs) by Shouri.

The Hellrune Coven got a Spin-Off strip, Magick Chicks.

Eerie Cuties provides examples of the following tropes:

• Abhorrent Admirer: Blair to pretty much every female and Nina's doppleganger to Kade.
• Absurdly Youthful Mother: Nina and Layla's mother, Maria does not look like someone who could have had 13 children. Justified in that she's a vampire.
• Accidental Kiss: Nina, when she falls on Kade (long story). She's upset about it, as it was her first.
  • And now she has a crush on him, so it's cool.
• A Cup Angst:
  • Even though Chloe acknowledged that her looks were OK for human standards she was really self conscious about her body/breasts as a Succubus. It didn't last long though. Layla also showed some concern over her own breasts after Chloe's * ahem* sudden growth, although it may be related to Envy rather than self consciousness.
    • And now Chloe wants her former, smaller breast size back. I guess "Be careful what you wish for?"
    • She has since found a more comfortable size thanks to the Doompanties' magic allowing her to alter them.
  • Brooke as well.

• Alcohol Hic: Nina, after drinking some (chocolate-flavored) Baileys. Chloe too.

• All Girls Like Ponies: Nina is turned into a boy when she's hit by a gender-changing orb; when she changes back into a girl, she says: "Hey! I like ponies again!"
• Almost Kiss: Brooke and Layla... then Layla ruins the moment.

  • Melissa Hellrune and her Girl Posse. When they were transferred, there was some struggle for the place of local Queen Bee.
  • Chloe has thrown her hat into the ring after wearing the Doom Panties.
• Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Nina thinks of her mom like this sometimes. Layla... might concur.
• Amplifier Artifact: For a succubus. Guess how it looks...
• Arbitrary Skepticism: Melissa Hellrune and her friends laugh at people who believe in a cursed mirror...despite attending a school for various mythical beings and being witches themselves.
• Arranged Marriage: Layla's father chose a future spouse for her when she was an infant. Layla only found out about this when she was 16. Suffice to say, she wasn't happy about it.
  • Until she saw the would-be groom, anyway.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: "...Also, she had a kitty. Its name was Mr. Boodles."
• Art Shift: Well more like format shift. From colored newspaper like strips to more b&w manga like pages to allow more room for storytelling. The former has been collected in a volume set and now on sale for purchase.
• Artifact of Doom: The Orb of Tiresias becomes this after bonding with Blair's perverted mind and starts turning all guys and girls into Blair's feminine ideal: vapid valley girls. The range of effect seems to be spreading too. Before falling victim to its effects herself, Professor Twigitt mentions that if this continues, all human life on Earth will become extinct in a generation or two.
  • The succubus Doom Panties, which bring out Chloe's Super-Powered Evil Side.
• Ascended Extra: Cess and Laura who appeared as background characters, and Cess as the girl caught making out with Kade before they moved up to queen-bee wannabees.
• Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! Nina is easily distracted by flowers, butterflies or Ace.
• Author Appeal: You can't look at the arc "Big Girls Don't Cry" and not think this.
• Back From the Dead: It looks like this happens to Tiffany after Layla bites her. However, she actually never died: as it turns out, that she was stabbed by an astral sword which causes the victim's spirit to leave their body for a brief time and doesn't harm the body at all.
• Barbie Doll Anatomy: Tiffany Winters' ghost.
• Barely There Swimwear: Layla's string bikini. Goes from barely there to gone, much to Kade's delight.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: We were introduced to flat chested Chloe, but now she wants to be that way again.
• Bi the Way: Brooke Lynn. Long suspected, now confirmed. Although she hasn't quite figured it out herself...

Brooke: At school, my face got all red when I saw Kade half-naked in bicycle shorts. Layla: Well... Anybody's would've... Brooke: A-and when I see Chloe changing in the locker room... Layla: Oh, c'mon. Even I'm jealous of that pair.

• • Kissing Layla seems to have made her realize that she's attracted to her. She's an emotional wreck and confused out of her mind as a result and it probably doesn't help that the entire school probably knows now after Blair uploaded footage of it to his youtube.
• Bifauxnen: Brooke Lynn.

Ninao: Oh noes! Blair turned Brooke into a boy, too! Brooke: I'm...I'm still a girl. Ninao: (lifting Brooke's skirt) No, you're n-- oh wait, yes, you are. *SLAP!*

• • Seems to happen often enough to her.
  • Hinted at, when a drunk Chloe snuggles up to Brooke in lieu of a boy.
  • Dialed up quite a bit here.
• Big Breasts Big Deal: Chloe belongs to Type 2 (Resentment); when she hears about the gender-changing orb, she runs to find it, and become an A-cup again (she misunderstood Nina, and thinks that the orb's only effect is decreasing breast size).
• Big Sister Instinct: Layla doesn't like it when you mess with Nina. "YOU. MADE. MY. LITTLE. SISTER. CRY!
• Big No: Layla's reaction to Blair uploading the footage of her and Brooke to his YouTube account.
• Blind Without'Em: Chloe, normally. Alchohol apparently changes this.
• Blonde Brunette Redhead: The local Girl Posse; Melissa (blonde), Jacqui (brunette) and Cerise (redheaded).
• Bottle Fairy:
  • Chloe. Turns out that getting drunk causes her to shift from Moe into full on Horny Devil mode -- her eyes fix themselves, she takes on a more seductive stance, and she immediately starts seducing the nearest available people.
  • Nina drinks hard when called a big girl and told it has chocolate inside. Brooke is a semi-example, considering how much she wanted the bottle once she saw the brand.
• Brain Bleach: Last link of Amazingly Embarrassing Parents makes Layla look like she needed some. In fact, Chloe and Brooke probably did, too.
• Breast Expansion:
  • This is part of succubus puberty. As in 3 cup-sizes in 3 seconds...
  • Gender Bender Orb + Blair and his wish for girls equals this.
  • Chloe can also do this to any succubi she creates.
• Brick Joke: Remember when Layla said that she didn't want the planned kiss between her and Brooke ending up on Blair's youtube account? Take a wager what happened a couple days later... Given the circumstances it also doubles as Tempting Fate.
  • At the School Dance, Girl!Ace wishes that the curse could be broken with a kiss, like in a fairy tale. Brooke decides it's worth a shot... but nothing happens. Turns out that Brooke was just the wrong sex.
• Buffy-Speak: Nina on what she wants to do on a date: "Date stuff... fun datey-type stuff... that date people do on dates for fun and-"
• Burning With Anger: Anger causes Laura's powers to manifest.
• Butt Monkey: Ace. His life has pretty much become a living hell ever since he met Nina. Though, it seems, that since he recovered from the gender bending incident, things are starting to turn around a bit and he may have gained a girlfriend in Brooke.
• Buxom Is Better: After puberty hit Chloe, she became a lot more popular among boys.
• Call Back: Kade probably finds Ace's butt pretty cute now.
• Captain Ersatz: Melissa looks a lot like Ai Ebihara.
• Catgirl:
  • Kade is a Cat Boy.
    • Now he is a CatGirl.
  • One of Layla's "dates" to the dance is an ocelot girl.

  • Layla and Brooke get into one, with Brooke using Blair as a weapon, much to Blair's delight.
  • Layla and Brooke start another one in the bathroom of the Delacroix house, after Layla tries to force Brooke into a makeover.

• Clothing Damage: Well, you can't have a good Cat Fight without it...

  • Her time in Magick Chicks is making it more clear that Tiffany may be one.
• Contrived Coincidence: An astral sword? Really?
• Cool and Unusual Punishment: The gym coach chains Layla to an anchor so she can't cheat on the 100m dash.
  • Layla invented a very good comeback when power-drunk Chloe began hitting on Dio.
• Coming Out Story: Brooke is in the middle of her own Played for Laughs one.
• Creepy Doll: Nina has a doll by the name of Blair who is possessed by the spirit of a man. Creepy because it's a girl doll and all the expression are rather girly, but it's a guy in that shell of plastic. That and he's prepared to stake Nina if she develops a taste for blood. Blair can be funny, though, to the audience and the characters he's not harassing at the moment.
  • While not enough is shown to confirm or disprove it, fan speculation is that the principal might be a creepy Japanese doll.
• Crossover: With Paranormal Mystery Squad, explaining how Steph got her skull hairpin. It was a present from Layla.
  • This, of course has make fans start to theorise the possibility of being canon.
• Cross-Popping Veins: Lampshaded by Layla in the prologue.
• Curtains Match the Window: Several including Brooke, Chloe, Cessily, and Cerise.
• Cute Ghost Girl: Tiffany was this for a while. Bonus points for it being an Out-of-Clothes Experience.
• Cute Little Fangs: Nina in general. Layla here.
  • Cessily seems to have some.
• Cute Monster Girl:
  • The only reason that the whole cast doesn't count is that some are cute monster boys.
  • Ace as a guy has hairy hands due to not quite being done with puberty. Girl!Ace doesn't, due to werewolf girls maturing faster than boys. (... But really because it wouldn't be cute on her.)
• Deadly Prank: Yeah, never tie together the shoes of someone holding a sword. She got better.
• Deathbringer the Adorable: Kujo.
• Defrosting Ice Queen: Hanging out with Tiffany gives Layla a chance to be seen outside of her usual defensive persona, which is pretty universally considered a good thing by the audience. Naturally, none of the regular cast have gotten to see this side of her yet.
• Department of Redundancy Department: Tiffany Winters, the local slayer.

Tiffany: Mother, Father, I, Tiffany Winters, swear that I, Tiffany Winters, will make you proud.

• Different for Girls: Played with. Poor Ace hasn't yet figured out that some things are really not so different for girls.
• Distracted By My Own Sexy: Ace gets distracted by her own sexy after a makeover in this strip.

Ace: I should be looking for a way to turn back into a...boy. Ooh, boy... Layla: Are you and that mirror gonna need some alone time?

• • Brooke is a victim of this when she wears Ace's old uniform. Too bad she got distracted by herself in the middle of the boy's locker room.
• Distracted By the Sexy:
  • The Ninaganger sure reacted strongly to a wet Kade in bike shorts.
  • The reaction Ace's father had back when Ace had to write that report during vampire history month.

Ace's Father: (Snatches Ace's textbook away) Vampires!? Is that what they're teaching you at this school!? How dare they--Who's this? Ace: Thats the vampire queen I need to do the report on! Ace's Father: Can Daddy help? ♥

• • Ace certainly approves. Nina did similar at a point. Perhaps, switching genders affects sexuality, aware of the switch or not?
    • It does.
• Double Standard: It's open to argument whether it's a double standard in play in the arc Big Girls Don't Cry, or whether it's simply that Kade is more interested in Layla than she is in him.
  • Based on his time near Layla, Kade would probably prefer it was just Layla, but she's sort of a Tsundere with her affection. She knows he's hers and doesn't feel threatened by other girls. The rare exceptions Layla has are... bad for him.
  • Invoked in universe by Cerise's reaction to Jacqui getting upset at Layla for 'using Kade' right after seeing him exit a broom closet with Cess.
• Dumb Blonde: Blair's idea of the perfect girl includes this.
  • Laura... isn't all that bright.

• Easily Forgiven: Chloe for the things she did under the influence of the Doom Panties, at least by Nina and Brooke.

• Evil Hand: The French teacher Arman Purvis suffers one of these. It seems to be the arm of an evil hairdresser.
• Evil Laugh: The mirror monster laughs when pranking. It's a very unthreatening example.
• Evil Twin: The chapter "See No Evil" has Nina being trapped in a mirror and having her doppelganger do "very evil things."
• Expressive Accessory: Layla wears a skull hair clip that mirrors her moods.

• Fan Service Pack: A male example. When Ace finally gets transformed back into a boy, he's taller and more filled out than he used to be, (and no furry hands to boot!). Apparently the changes (due to puberty) that occurred when Ace was female stuck.

• Feather Boa Constrictor: Brooke nearly always wears her pet snake, Seth, around her neck. Unlike usual examples of the trope, he's about the size of a typical garden snake.
• Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: Chloe is a Moe, Meganekko Horny Devil with A Cup Angst before her growth spurt that's a blonde, Innocent Fanservice Girl with freckles and a predisposition for getting sexy with minimal drinking. Gender need not apply. She's got a minor Yamato Nadeshiko streak when not drunk. And she was too sexy already to be affected by the Orb.

• Fur Against Fang: Although there does seem to be an in-universe rivalry between vampires and werewolves, Nina doesn't seem to care about it, nor her family: Layla is equally rude to everyone, Maria is equally flirty with everyone. Nina has a very personal theory about the feud.
• Gag Penis: Blair's imagined male Chloe.
• Gender Bender: Thanks to a magical orb that can change sexes. Hilarity ensues when Blair gets his hands on it.
  • Attractive Bent Gender: Happens to a lot of guys in the arc "Big Girls Don't Cry", Case in point: panel 2. And in that same strip, even Kade admits to thinking this. The attractive part at least, since he doesn't know about the other part. There are probably some female fans that could say Nina (or would it be Nino, now?) fits this trope as well.
    • Jacqui actually casts a spell to invoke this.It works.
    • A subversion of this trope turns out to be the way to destroy/counteract the Artifact of Doom.

    • Stupid sexy fem Ace!
    • Brooke in Ace's old uniform. In a Wholesome Crossdresser sort of way. To Ace.
  • First Law of Gender Bending: Because he (or she) was out of range of the orb when it reverted those affected by it,Ace is still a girl, even after The Orb of Tiresias changed everyone else back. Lasted about a year, real time, until it got transferred to Kade.
  • Second Law of Gender Bending: There have been a few scenes to suggest that, while still interested in becoming a boy again, Ace may have enjoyed being a girl more that she let on. See Distracted By My Own Sexy above and Not So Different below.
  • Third Law of Gender Bending: Played completely straight by Nina, Ace and Kade post gender-swap. After all, it was not just "turn into girls" but bimbofication curse to begin with.

• • The Mind Is a Plaything of The Body: Played with by Professor Twigitt: Ace's new heterosexual attraction to boys? Genetic, apparently. Ace's equally new desire to go shopping for cute clothes? "I've never had those urges. That's just you."
  • Long Haired Pretty Boy: Apparently, the orb of Tiresias doesn't actually change anyone's hair, so when it's done its work there's a few guys with very girly hair and a lot of girls with very boyish hair.
• Genki Girl: Nina.
• Genre Blindness: For being a Slayer, Tiffany has little idea of how one becomes a vampire. Or what she does in general (like what sort of a sword she grabbed).
• Genre Savvy: Though not in the way that could help.

Tiffany: Vengeance shall be mine! Wait... Not "vengeance"... What's the one heroes get? Oh right. Justice shall be done!

• Ghost Pirate: Jim Beard Sprynter, the gym coach.
• Gilligan Cut: "No! My hair! I won't change! I won't change! I won't--" *cue cheer leading*

• Girl On Girl Is Hot: When the orb turns people into Blair's ideal woman, it doesn't take them long to start to make out with each other.
  • It also doesn't take long for people to complain and get that part removed. Though it should be noted that they weren't complaining about the girl on girl. They just didn't like that it happened because of mind control

  • Used hilariously in the print volume's bonus story, Kissing Booth.
  • Invoked, as the logical result of this having happened a few seconds later...
  • Mrs. Delacroix describing her 'phase' sounds pretty hot. That little number was provoked with this moment of girl-on-girl.
  • Layla must just have that effect on people...
• Girl Posse: Melissa's coven, Jacqui and Cerise.
• Girlish Pigtails: Brooke wore her hair like that when she was a little girl, as shown in flashbacks.
• Girls Have Cooties: Here, Boys Have Cooties - when Nina first meets Ace, he's in wolf form; she hugs him, then, when he changes into a boy, she slaps him for giving her cooties.
• The Glomp: Nina's modus operandi. Blair could be counted as well, albeit for different reasons.
• Glowing Eyes of Doom: Accentuated Nina's Slasher Smile nicely, though that could have just been Ace's imagination going wild.
• Goofy Print Underwear: Chloe
• Grand Theft Me: Nina switches her body with Layla's in order to get, a) Layla's boobs, and b) Kade.
• G-Rated Drug: Succubus blood is this to vampires.
• Hand or Object Underwear: Needed if your temper tantrum involves bursting into flames, and your outfit isn't fireproof.
• Have I Mentioned That I Am Heterosexual Today: Layla, justified by her being Mistaken for Gay.
• Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: A guest strip features Cess and Laura boasting about all the sex they had with their boyfriends. Layla says she can decide which one is telling the truth by tasting their blood, because "virgin blood tastes especially sweet". When she reveals that she lied about that, the girls both break down crying, admitting that they don't even have boyfriends.
• Heh Heh You Said X: When Brooke and Chloe talk about Diodore:

Brooke: I saw you checking out his butt! Nina: Hee hee! You said "butt"!

• Hidden Depths: Brooke's issues with sexuality and Layla's capacity to be understanding. To Brooke of all people!
  • There suddenly seems to be a lot more to Blair, Nina, or (probably) both.
    • If Layla stuck like this indefinitely, he'd really need that thing. She can be mean and devious when she doesn't have such a good reason.
• Horned Humanoid: Our resident Horny Devil, Chloe, is a horned devil as well.
• Horny Devils: In the form of an insecure, freckled, Moe Meganekko teenage succubus.
• Hot for Student: Arman appearently has a thing for Layla.
• Hot Mom:
  • Mrs. Maria Delacroix. She has had 13 kids. Doesn't look like it.

  • Tiffany whenever she drops the Smart Ball. For example, forgetting vampires and sun don't mix right after helping solve the Evil Twin issue. She blames it on blood loss.
  • The Orb of Tiresias becomes a literal Idiot Ball when Blair uses it to turn everybody into empty-headed bimbos.
• I Kiss Your Hand: Diodore does it for Layla.
• Imagine Spot: Tiffany has one before confronting her parents.
• I'm Not Pretty: When introduced, Chloe considered herself okay by normal standards, but not pretty enough by succubus standards. Even after her growth spurt, she called herself "quite plain", despite having a legion of admirers.
• Improbably Female Cast: There's only two main characters of note who are male, and one of them was turned into a girl. And then switched genders with the other guy.
• Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Chloe, while under the influce of the Doom Panties, seems to see Nina as this to the point where even considering using her corrupting magic on her Chloe physically ill. That said, there are hints that Chloe's impression is not as accurate as anybody would like.
• Inherently Funny Words: "Begonias" according to DaveZero.
• Innocent Inaccurate: Nina's report on an ancient vampire queen.

• Insistent Terminology: Ace? Werewolf? Puppy. Nina's stubborn like that. Even when their genders were reversed.
• Instant Humiliation - Just Add YouTube: Though the amount of actual humiliation has let to be determained.
• Instant Waking Skills: Brooke demonstrates these when Layla tries to drink from her (though it's possible that she faked sleep).
• I See London: Nina's Mirror Monster pantses Chloe during gym class.

• It Got Worse: Pretty much a rule for Chapter 9.
• It Makes Sense in Context: Don't bother trying to explain a storyline to someone who's never read the comic. You'll just sound stupid.
• Jerk With a Heart of Gold: Layla has many flaws and can be rather selfish, but she also has some moments of actual kindness and she truly cares for her sister.

And Mel sees that Kade got gender-bent (and she has to protect Ash from Kade), though it does give her a momentary Imagine Spot where she sees herself as his girlfriend IF she can undo the Orb of Tiresias' magic.
• Really Gets Around: Considering he walked up to his girlfriend, covered in the lipstick from the girl he just made out with, Kade may apply.
• Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Eugene Delacroix. According to Nina he's older than the French romantic painter of that name, who was born in 1798.
• Rebus Bubble: Nina's reaction to Ace transforming the first time. Can be seen in Magic Pants. And Nina seeing Ace here.

  • We now have a proper crossover. Layla has shown up in Magick Chicks during a story arc focusing on Tiffany, while Mellisa and Faith crossover into Eerie Cuties during a story line wherre Kade calls Mellisa for a date.

• Sacred First Kiss: Nina was temporarily sad about it.

Brooke is a Melusine, a race apparently based on a nymph who apparently was cursed to turn into part snake occasionally and, due to it being a curse rather than a natural facet, got a promise from her human husband never to peek on her at those times. When he did, she forgave him (her own curse was gained when she tried to punish her father for a similar transgression against her mother...mother was not amused with the disrespect she showed her father) until he called her a "serpent" in public at which point she turned into a dragon, left him some parting gift and flew away.
• Scary Shiny Glasses: Nina in this strip, even though she isn't wearing glasses.
• Schoolgirl Lesbians:
  • Mrs. Delcroix says that she and Chloe's mom were this.
  • Confirmed as of 1/26/2011. And now she assumes that Brooke and Layla are now too.

• Sealed Evil in A Can: The Doom Panties which Chloe's mother said were meant to be for her but her body isn't ready for them yet. Putting then on prematurely makes Chloe a tad evil.

• Selective Obliviousness: Melissa and Jacqui's reactions to Layla being justifiably annoyed with Kade. Noticed by Cerise in Double Standard.

• Shipper On Deck: Look like the other students are quite supportive of the idea of Layla and Brooke. ...At least the other girls are.
