Fusion Dimension

Leo Akaba

Reiji's father, who three years ago went to the Fusion Dimension, where he became the Professor, the head of Academia. He is the instigator of the interdimensional war with the intent to conquer all dimensions and unite them under his command.

  • Ambiguously Brown: His skin is noticeably darker than most characters. Other characters as well as his wife and son from Academia have lighter skin color.
  • Ambition Is Evil: When said ambition is starting a interdimensional war where the losers are sealed in a card, yes, it is evil.
  • Archnemesis Dad: To Reiji, who is explicitly trying to find duelists strong enough to defeat the Professor.
  • Bad Boss: Played with. He seems to treat his subordinates well enough, or at least doesn't harm them, but most Academia members are terrified of him. It's not clear yet if he actually is a Bad Boss, or if their fear is just indoctrination due to being raised as Child Soldiers.
  • Badass Cape: Showing his authority in Academia.
  • Bald Black Leader Guy: A villainous one for Academia.
  • Bald of Evil: With Tainted Veins to boost.
  • Big Bad: He's the mastermind behind the interdimensional war and the one who started it by having the Fusion Dimension invade the Xyz Dimension.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Despite the Tyler Sisters' power, he has the Obelisk Force on standby in case they lose. They do.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The majority of characters call him just "Professor", but it's likely that all of them know his name.
  • Evil Former Friend: Apparently to Yusho, due to their work on Solid Vision and Action Dueling. Yusho believed he would be able to talk to him, but never had a chance.
  • Evil Plan: His plan is to invade the other worlds to unite all of them. Though we don't know enough to tell if he is selfish or aWell-Intentioned Extremist.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: A deep, booming voice to add to his growing list of evil tropes.
  • Expy:
    • His relationship with his oldest son is blatantly one for Seto and Gozaburo's from the Duel Monsters.
    • He acts as a Composite Character for Chronos, Samejima, and Yubel from GX. His basic uniform is heavily inspired by Chronos', like Samejima he's the bald leader of Academia, and like Yubel he's plotting to merge the dimensions with methods Powered by a Forsaken Child.
  • Family Theme Naming: Leo, like Reiji and Reira, have the the kanji of zero (零) in their names.
  • Gray Eyes: Symbolizing his detached personality.
  • Meaningful Name: The Kanji characters which make up his name mean "Zero King."
  • Obviously Evil: Just look at the listed tropes.
  • Parental Abandonment: Episode 41 reveals he abandoned his family three years ago.
  • Parental Neglect: Reiji believes that the Professor wouldn't care if Reiji were kidnapped.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Like the rest of his family he's based on a suit. His is Spades, with his outfit's collar resembling one.
  • Slouch of Villainy: In episode 106, while talking to the Tyler Sisters, he slouches on his throne, this in stark contrast to how he was standing and polite with Sora and Barrett.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": The problem is that his name is written in Kanji rather than Katakana. While it's pronounced "Leo," there's a few ways to romanize that into English.
  • The Stoic: Just like his son. The greatest display of emotion so far is mild irritation at Barrett for not wanting him to send Yuri to the City. However, he seems to be getting very irked at the Lancers, showing frustration with their meddling.
  • Tainted Veins: On his head.

Sora Shiun'in (Sora Perse)

A mysterious boy who decides to become Yuya's apprentice, joining You Show Duel School. He uses his looks to charm the pants off everyone he meets, and constantly seems to know more than he lets on. After Yuzu loses to Masumi, she ask him to teach Fusion Summoning, which he greatly accepts. He has been revealed as a member of the faction that destroyed Kurosaki's and Yuto's home, specifically a Duel Soldier from a school known as Academia, located in the Fusion Dimension. With his identity revealed, Sora returns to Academia and has become Yuya and the others' enemy. He returns later during the Synchro Dimension saga, replacing Dennis after his compromise with the Lancers, under orders to retrieve both Serena and Yuzu. However, Sora has other plans in mind...while protecting Yuzu to keep his promise with Yuya, Sora eventually realizes that he does not belong to Academia anymore and that Yuya and Yuzu are his only friends he can stay loyal to, becoming an ally to the Lancers. He runs a Furnimal/Fluffal Deck, based on cutesy monsters fusing with a certain Edge Imp monsters to become horrifying mash-up creatures, the Deas-Toys/Frightfurs

  • Anime Hair: Par for the course, closely resembling Lua's/Leo's, but more blue than turquoise.
  • Anti-Villain: Unless he's facing Xyz Duelists from Resistance, Sora would rather eat candy and fool around with the heroes, whom he develops a genuine bond with. These traits mostly remain after his Heel–Face Turn, making him an Anti-Hero.
  • Arch-Enemy: Ever since his loss to Kurosaki, Sora considers him this. Nothing will deter him from trying to defeat him, nothing. He finally succeeds.
    • However, though they hate each other, their animosity is rather impersonal and more about Xyz vs. Fusion as a whole. Compared to Dennis, the latter fits this role between Kurosaki far better.
    • He's this to Tsukikage, since Sora turned his brother Hikage into a card. However, Sora is more accepting about this and is willing to let Tsukikage have his way with him as long as Yuya is saved first. Actually something of a subversion, since Sora is slowly becoming more good, and Tsukikage agreed to let it go for the time being to focus on the mission. He later drops this by saving Tsukikage from Obelisk Force.
  • Badass Adorable: He beat up Sawatari and his friends in an instant. With a lollipop stick. He also went ninja on us in Episodes 6, 15 and 34.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Episode 80 shows more of Sora's mindset: during his time in Standard, he came to regard Yuya and Yuzu as his first friends. This is due to the harsh training regime Academia put the kid through, which really left no time for relaxation and bonding between his fellow students. Plus since the majority of Academia are tortured into violent but obient sociopaths, hanging out with Yuya and Yuzu came as a source of huge relief to the boy and he grew to care for them despite his better judgment.
  • Being Evil Sucks: He really does want to keep his friendship with Yuya and Yuzu, and struggling against Professor's orders are becoming increasingly difficult. He eventually decides to go against Academia to help his friends.
  • Berserk Button: The idea of a Xyz duelist either being better or looking down on him is a major button. More specifically, thinking about Kurosaki and the way he humiliated him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He saves Yuzu and Crow's kids from Security. Counts as this due to being on the Face side at the time.
  • Big Brother Mentor: An age-inverted example; he ends up teaching Yuzu about Fusion Summoning. Yuzu refers back to this relationship when explaining him to Frank, Tanner, and Amanda.
  • Break the Haughty: As the duel with Kurosaki went on, this happened. And again against Yuto.
  • The Bus Came Back: After the Battle Royal arc, Sora more or less gets Put on a Bus until about halfway through the Synchro arc.
  • Character Development: Thanks to Yuya and Yuzu he begins to move out of being a Sociopathic Soldier and gains a sense of empathy.
  • Child Soldier: A lot of Sora's claims about his abilities and superiority to Xyz duelists, is eerily similar to the lies real child soldiers are told to get him to fight. Episode 36 confirms he is a Duel Soldier from the Fusion Dimension.
  • Cute and Psycho: He plays off his cuteness blatantly, and partakes in hunting Xyz Duelists and destroying Heartland City for fun.
  • Defector from Decadence: Sora ultimately leaves Academia for Yuya and Yuzu.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: Sora plays his cuteness to the hilt, charming the pants off of Yuya's mother, friends, and teachers alike.
  • Determinator: Once he sets his sights on something, Sora will not give up until he gets it. Kurosaki uses this to reason that Sora survived being blown up during his message to Yuya.
  • Expy:
    • A silly guy that befriends The Hero with cutesy monsters that turn into nightmarish creatures, and turns out to be Evil All Along and makes constant evil faces. Shingetsu/Vector anyone? Though his character development is slowly edging him out of this.
    • He's also a mix between Bruno (helping out with the heroes) and Lucciano (being a child Duelist working with the bad guys). And like Bruno, he stays loyal to his new friends.
  • For the Evulz: The reason Sora and his fellow Fusion duelists hunted Xyz duelists.
  • Forced into Evil: Sora seems to believe no matter what he does because he was raised by the Academia, he is stuck to them forever.
  • Friendless Background: He grew up without any friends in Academia, Yuzu and Yuya being his first.
  • The Gadfly: Enjoys teasing Yuya a lot. He also teased Yuzu over her interest in Yuto a lot while he tutored her.
  • Kick the Dog: Several. He reveals gleefully how his group attacked Heartland, and then turns Hikage into a card. He then completely rejects Yuya's attempts to invoke a Heel–Face Turn, claiming that they were never friends.
  • Lack of Empathy: Sora doesn't see that his and Academia's actions against the Xyz Dimension was wrong and instead considers it fun. When others call him out on this, he just shrugs it off, saying its necessary to unite the dimensions. The Synchro arc is starting to subvert this trope, as Yuya's constant questioning is slowly bringing Sora around to his way of thinking, to the point that he even apologizes to Tsukikage for carding Hikage.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • He agreed to teach Yuzu how to Fusion Summon. Subverted, as he later revealed that it was for the glory of Fusion. Double Subverted, he later admits it was out of friendship.
    • An odd version. He finishes up his final qualifier duel quickly, to ensure that Yuzu has time to see the end of Yuya's duel with Mieru. He then later gave Yuya an honest congratulations for Fusion Summoning perfectly on his first try.
    • After his allegiance to the Big Bad is revealed, he gets one when the Professor orders him to recapture Serena who looks like Yuzu. Sora is shocked at the idea of capturing his friend.
    • Even after the Professor clarifies that Serena and Yuzu are different people, he has trouble getting past the fact Serena looks too much like Yuzu.
    • Later after he saves Dennis he insists that he goes home because he is hurt, and promises that he will complete his mission for him, all the while being extremely courteous and kind to him.
    • After saving Yuzu from certain death, he drags her unconscious body somewhere safe before going out to give Yuya a message.
      He later genuinely apologizes to Tsukikage for his brother, though he knows it won't make up for it, and asks he simply wait until after Yuya is safe to take revenge.
  • Pride:
  • The Smart Guy: Sora is not only familiar with the different Special Summoning methods, he also judges most situations right, making him the smartest duelist among the four heroes. At least until his Face–Heel Turn.
  • Slasher Smile: At the end of Episode 33. Does this repeatedly throughout the next episode. Later this becomes Sora's trademark as his true personality is out for the world to see.
  • Smug Smiler: Very confident in his reading of people and his dueling knowledge which allows him to be one step ahead of his opponent. This also serves as a hint to the audience about his his mysterious Hidden Depths.
  • Sociopathic Soldier: Well, Duelist in any case, though this does entail actively harming his opponents and destroying their city. He believes Fusion Duelists to be far superior to Xyz Duelists, and targets them just for fun.
  • Sore Loser: Sora just can't accept the fact that he lost to Kurosaki and insists that he's the "stronger" of the two when he's not holding back, despite the audience clearly seeing that Kurosaki won fair and square. Downplayed when he goes to duel Yuya for a second time during the Battle Royal sub-arc. He comments he doesn't like having a losing record against Yuya, but would not have gone after him had Yuya not insisted on dueling.
  • Sweet Tooth: Sora is always eating something sweet. ALWAYS.
  • Took A Level in Kindness: Hanging out with Yuya and Yuzu has significantly improved his sanity.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair:Its cyan

Yuri

Voice by: Kensho Ono (JP),Michael Lisco Jr (EN)

A member of Academia under the direct command of Professor Leo Akaba. Like Yuto and Yugo, he strongly resembles Yuya. Yuri has captured Ruri and Rin from their respective dimensions on behalf of the Professor and with Serena under their wing, his new task is to capture Yuzu, the fourth and final piece. Cold, cruel and ruthless in his tasks, Yuri is one of the most sadistic characters introduced in the series. He utilizes the Predator Plants, a legion of DARK Plant type monsters that can swarm the field, impairs and ensnares opponents with their effects and sets up ideal conditions for his ace monster, Starve Venom Fusion Dragon. Later revealed to be the Fusion Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them sharing the same face.

  • Agent Peacock: A flashy dresser and a dangerous duelist.
  • Alleged Lookalikes: With Yuya, Yuto, and Yugo, he seems to has been mistaken for both Yuto and Yugo by the other. Yuzu first mistakes him for Yuya, but then she remembers that aside from Yuto there is another one who looks like Yuya, so she assumes that he is... Yugo.
  • Anime Hair: Like the majority of the franchise, his hair is impossible.
  • Badass: Being one of Yuya's counterparts, this was a given even before his One-Turn Five Kill.
  • Badass Cape: A short red one resembling Yuya's coat.
  • Badass Long Coat: He wears also a coat, since his cape isn't long enough.
  • Badass Long Robe: He wore a cloak with a hoodie when he kidnapped Rin and Ruri. Yugo saw his face when Yuri kidnapped the former, but the cloak possibly added extra confusion to the whole Identical Stranger issue for Yugo, as Yuri's cloak resembles Yuto's cape.
  • Berserk Button: His button seems to be being mistaken for someone else. Getting in his way also annoys the crap out of him.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has very thick, pink eyebrows.
  • Blood Knight: He wanted to duel Serena rather than just arrest her to make it more fun. When he notices Serena's current condition, he offers to duel Sora instead. He expresses little interest at Yugo's demands until he remembers that he beat Serena and decides to duel him.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Has some shades of this, as in Episode 86 he complains that it is a pain that Starve Venom brought him to Yugo
  • Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are: As if it wasn't obvious enough that he's a sociopath, he's shown to do this to both Yuzu and Rin, clearly enjoying himself while cornering them, and in Rin's case saying to her face that their game of hide and seek was over. Later it's revealed this was the same for Ruri.
  • The Comically Serious:
    • Despite being a psychopathic Agent Peacock, Yuri gets dumbfounded at Yuya's Synchronization and Yugo's hilarious antics.
    • He is slightly disturbed by the weird appearance of the Ojamas, which becomes hilarious when he's slightly annoyed to command his Starve Venom to attack Ojama King.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: He demonstrates his dueling skills in a similar fashion to Kurosaki. In his first on-screen duel, Yuri gets a One-Turn Five Kill with Starve Venom Fusion Dragon, which is even more impressive due to his opponents using Fusion Monsters that were originally used by Judai's friends Sho, Hayato and Manjoume. Even more impressive than that is that Yuri doesn't lose Life Points through damage, he only lose Life Points by paying a cost once, winning the duel with 3200 Life Points.
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy]: At the start of the series, Yuri was the only one of Yuya's counterparts privy to the existences of other dimensions, including the fact that they're are others who look just like him. However, rather than be surprised about this, he weaponizes this knowledge, seen when he deliberately leads Yugo into the destroyed Xyz Dimension to meet Yuto. Since Yugo only saw Yuri's face at night, along with the fact that Yuri was wearing a cloak to disguise himself, he automatically assumed Yuto was the culprit; in turn, Yuto mistook Yugo for Yuri since Ruri was already missing. In short, Yuri took advantage of the general confusion between the two counterparts and threw off any trail leading back to himself, all the while smiling in the background like the cunning bastard that he is.
  • Death Glare: He gives a chilling one to Yugo.
  • The Dragon: For the Professor. He also captured Ruri and Rin for him. Episode 91 shows that he is very highly ranked within the Obelisk Force, who are the Professor's hand picked force, calling him "-sama" showing he's above them in ranking.
  • The Dreaded: Almost everyone is afraid of Yuri, to the point that just the threat of him coming on the scene is enough to motivate people. Roget doesn't want Academia to invade the Synchro Dimension, but he's terrified when he thinks Yuri might come. Even his own allies fear him; when Yuzu is about to duel Obelisk Force and Yuri arrives looking for her, the latter quickly clear outnote , and Barrett tells the Professor he can complete his mission alone and doesn't want Yuri around. For his part, Yuri seems to enjoy being feared, and is shown sadistically toying with his opponents on multiple occasions.
  • Duels Decide Everything: Invoked, whenever Yuri goes to secure a bracelet girl he always duels them to give them a chance to escape. He usually does this for fun.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Yuri finds the idea of innocent entertainment laughable and instead prefers his opponents to suffer while he comes out on top.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • Unlike Yuto, who is just a Foil, and Yugo, who's Not So Different from Yuto himself, Yuri is indeed a real evil counterpart for Yuya. Word of God states that he works for Academia for fun.
    • His Starve Venom Fusion Dragon is one for Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, resembling a heavily distorted and corrupted version of it. It also looks like a twisted version of Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, too. Additionally, the way how its first effect looks is very similar to Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's Treason Discharge effect.
  • Expy: Being an Ax-Crazy Psycho for Hire themed after poison and carnivorous plants, Yuri is an unholy blend of Supreme King Judai, Professor Cobra, Yubel and Black Rose Witch Aki pressed into a single character and let loose on the universe. Bonus points for his reasons to commit unambiguously evil acts.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He seems to be somewhat respectful, if mocking, to Yuzu despite it being his mission to capture her. That said, he also heartlessly seals Olga and Halil into cards just because they were in the way.
  • For the Evulz: Seems to be the reason why he does anything. A good example is episode 91 when Yuri finds Serena. He admits he could easily capture her due to her current state but refuses as it would be too boring and instead wants to duel her with her freedom at stake.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: How he was shown in the second opening with his Face Framed in Shadow. Once the opening reveals his face, his eyes don't glow anymore, but he looks even more evil than it was shadowed◊. He gets them for real in episodes 87-88 and later on in episodes 91-92.
  • Identical Stranger: Yuri's face is the same as Yuya and his other two doppelgängers. Unlike Yuto and Yugo, however, Yuri also sounds like Yuya as they both have the same seiyuu. This was later revealed to be the reason for Yugo and Yuto's rivalry; both Yuto and Yugo thought the other to be Yuri.
  • Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: He uses a Plant deck, but like his counterparts, his ace is a Dragon.

Japanese Pronouns: Unlike his counterparts, he uses "boku", which gives him a Faux Affably Evil vibe. But when he is syncing with Yuya, he uses "ore".

  • Jerkass: Yuri is meant to be Yuya's opposite in every way: Yuya's kind, understanding and wants to make a person smile; Yuri's cruel, impatient and loves filling someone with terror. When asked by Yuzu why he's going around sealing people in cards like he did to poor Olga and Halil, he responds with a nonchalant "they were in my way."
  • Just Following Orders:
    • He claims that he's just following the Professor's orders after carding Halil and Olga and attacking Yuzu.
    • He also claims this to Yugo when he demands Yuri to take him to Rin.
  • Kick the Dog: He defeated and "carded" Olga and Halil without any regret. He then goes to chase poor Yuzu, all while smiling about it. It's the same when he goes after Ruri and Rin.
    • Rather than simply arrest Serena while she's weakened, he would rather duel her and watch her squirm. When he tries to duel Sora in her place, he mentions how annoying it would be to drag both of them back and would opt for killing him instead.
  • Meaningful Name: Yuri, or Joeri means "farmer".note Which fits, considering the type of Deck he uses.
  • Multicolored Hair: Violet and pink.
  • Not So Different: For all his evil and The Last of These Is Not Like the Others traits, Yuri is ultimately one of Yuya's dimensional counterparts, which means that he's just as much of a Cosmic Plaything as they are and as seen in his interactions with Yugo, just as silly.
  • Obviously Evil: If his smug face during his introduction isn't enough, the second version of the second opening highlights how evil he looks.
  • Slasher Smile: Most of his smiles are these and they are disturbing!!
  • Smug Smiler: In his first appearance. The title of Episode 47 is even called "The Cold Smile of Yuri". This becomes the norm for him whenever he speaks to anyone unless they manage to annoy him.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Yuri is very calm in his speech, but absolutely enjoys being a Duel Soldier. Shown very well in episode 54 where we see Yuri capture Rin and again in episode 75 when he captures Ruri.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": An official website and the anime spell his name as "Joeri." Before that, it was "Juri."
  • Waistcoat of Style: Under his Badass Long Coat. How many layers does this guy wear anyway?
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Violet and pink.

Dennis Mackfield

Voice by :Tetsuya Kakihara (JP),Daniel J Edwars

Dennis is supposedly an exchange student from the LDS Broadway branch who takes the Xyz Summon course. After saving Yuya from Ryozanpaku's duel school students, he tells the young entertainer that he's an admirer of his father Yusho's dueling style, hence the flamboyancy in his duels. Later becomes one of the top 8 Junior Youth participants. He's later revealed shortly afterwards to be a mole for the main antagonists of the series: Academia, working directly with Yuri and spying on the Lancers. During the Friendship Tournament in the Synchro Saga, Kurosaki exposes Dennis for not only what he really is but got him to shed more details on the fall of the Xyz Dimension and his role in Ruri's disappearance. Similar to Sora, Dennis is now considered an enemy to Yuya and friends, and he was expelled from the Lancers for his betrayal and forced to return to Academia. He plays a balanced Entermage/Antique Gear hybrid deck, which fully brings out the potential of Pendulum, Xyz and Fusion Summoning.

  • Affably Evil: It's hard to tell just how much that goofy Broadway showman personality is a front, but while pretending to be a friend of the Lancers, he's pretty good at faking it. Dennis genuinely does love his Entertainment persona but is willing to set it aside for his mission, no matter how melancholy he becomes.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Dennis remains one of the most complex Yu-Gi-Oh! villains ever conceived. While he's clearly on the side of the bad guys, he legitimately came to enjoy Entertainment dueling. While he helped orchestrate the events that led to Ruri's kidnap and attempted to kidnap Yuzu several times, deep down, he came to regret his actions. While he's best friends with Yuri, he doesn't take outright sadistic pleasure in his actions. Which makes his "suicide" by carding all the more sad when Yusho offers him to join their side; Dennis believes that he's too steeped in this sin to ever be forgiven for what he's done.
  • And I Must Scream: In Episode 114. He commits "suicide"... with style.
  • Affably Evil: Its hard to tell weather he is a genuine nice guy or nit

Main Character

Yuya Sakaki

The main protagonist of the series Yuya aims to become an Entertainment Duelist to make people smile. As the series goes on he is forced to abound his entertainment style and focuses on dealing interdenominational war in order to save his childhood friend Yuzu but he will try his base to make people happy and smile.As the show goes on Yuya learns that he has doppelgangers who share his face: Yuto (Xyz), Yugo (Synchro) and Yuri (Fusion).

  • The Ace: He's the best duelist of the You Show Duel School, though there are only six students there.
  • All-Loving Hero: Yuya deeply cares about making people happy and smile through duels even his enemies.
  • Always Save the Girl: While he gladly helps the Lancers and wants to save the dimensions, he makes Yuzu's safety his top priority. He spends the Friendship Cup dueling so he can broadcast his message of peace to the Tops and Commons, but wanted to forgo his duel so people could help Yuzu after she crashed into a building. Reiji even points out how Yuya keeps putting Yuzu before everybody. It also doesn't stop at just Yuzu bu the also intends to save Ruri and Rin as well who are the xyz and synchro counterpart of yuzu
  • Anime Hair: Like his predecessors in other Yu-Gi-Oh! installments, his hair is pretty out there. However, it's more subdued in comparison, and the "out there" part comes more from the hair colors; half red and half green.
  • Badass: He nearly took down Strong Ishijima, the world champion, and that was before he got his Pendulum Cards, with which he did win. His badassery has only increased since then as he continually brings out ever stronger Extra Deck monsters and evolves his dueling to new heights, trouncing many powerful opponents and holding his own against Reiji Akaba, a world-famous dueling genius. In the finale of Season 2 he beats Jack Atlas, the King of Riding Duels who was previously invincible for years and is the strongest duelist in the Synchro Dimension.
  • Badass Adorable:He gets somany cute movemnets

The main heorine of the series and Yuyas Childhood Friend unlike Yuya she is quite rational and rather quick to use her temper.She often carries a paper fan in her person in which she uses it on Yuya and her father whenever they pisses her off similar to Yuya Yuzu has doppelgangers through out other dimensions: Ruri (Xyz), Rin (Synchro) and Serena (Fusion).Yuzu uses a Meldious deck that focuses on Special summoning but after losing to Masumi she decided to learn fusion summoning from Sora and now she specilize in fusion summoning

  • Action Girl:She is also a duelist like Yuya. She proves to be this where she Badassly defeat Masumi in their rematch.She is also the only girl along with Olga to make it to the junior youth top 8
  • All-Loving Heroin:Much like Yuya Yuzu cares about keeping everyone safe and is deeply against harming others but like Yuya she has also gotten bitten in her ass
  • Always Save The Boy: She deeply wants to end the Interdimensional war and will do anything to keep everyone safe, but if she thinks Yuya either is hurt or depressed, she will drop whatever she was doing to help him. Yugo even lampshades this after her duel in episode 69.

And Kotori, for having the most open attraction and reciprocated at that to Yuya, due to a lot of Ship Tease between them.

    • To Ruri, a comrade of Yuto's, and Kurosaki's younger sister. This is why Yuto dueled Sawatari in her place, and why Kurosaki mistook Yuzu for Ruri when he first saw her.
    • She's also one to Serena from Academia, as revealed in Episode 38.
    • And Rin, Yugo's precious person, who grew up in the slums and wanted to make a name for herself. She also has bracelet, but hers does not function the same way as Yuzu's.
  • Light Is Good: Her monsters are LIGHT monsters.
  • Living MacGuffin:She and her counterparts currently serves as this to Professor Leo Akaba for currently unknown reason
  • Ms. Fanservice: Averted for the majority of the time, which differs her a lot from the other YGO heroines. She gets her first fanservice moment in episode 62. Her second is a silhouetted Shower Scene in Episode 106.

  • Nice Girl: She's kind-hearted and shows it most of the time, though she won't hesitate to use her paper fan as a weapon when the situation calls for it.

The mysterious 16 year old CEO of Leo Corporation. He is a genius duelist with good brain.After traveling to Fusion Dimension three years ago before the current event Reiji rescued a young girl named Serena from academia who looks identical to Yuzu and learns from her his fathers plan to unite the four dimension ever since then he became against of his Father Leo Akaba and creat a organisation called Lancers in which he is the leader to defend his hometown and defeat Academia. Reiji uses DD deck which is a dark fiend type monsters and that deck mainly specializes in Fusion,Synchro and Xyz summoning.later he created his own Pendulum summoning

  • The Ace: He's a pro and runs the largest gaming business in the world, all at the age of 16. He's also the first duelist to use every Extra Deck summoning method (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Pendulum), something that wasn't accomplished by another character until Yuyu gained Enlightenment Paladin in episode 79.
  • Achilles in His Tent: He's the leader of the Lancers, but because of his Japanese VA's busy schedule, he doesn't get to say or do much to the point that he only dueled twice in the show's first season.
  • Adjusting Your Glasses: He adjusts his glasses by the bridge a lot in his duel with Yuya, showing that he has a well thought-out strategy and a few tricks up his sleeve.
  • All According to Plan: Says this very casually to "losing" Tsukikage in the Friendship Cup. Reira, and the Executive Council are disturbed.
  • All Your Powers Combined/Master of All: His deck is based around performing every kind of summoning. So far he's displayed Fusion, Synchro and Xyz, and the elemental theme of his monsters makes it possible he's also got an EARTH Ritual monster we haven't seen yet. Not to mention his Pendulum Monsters.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Towards Reira; he may be a little distant with him, but it's clear that he cares for his little brother. He starts out as the only person Reira seems comfortable around.
  • Ambiguously Evil:
    • He's initially presented as an antagonist, then turns out to be a respectful and decent guy, then turns out to be engaging in shady activities behind the scenes. By the time of Episode 36 when he true motives are revealed, it's clear he has good intentions, but is willing to do very morally grey things for the greater good.
    • During their duel, Roget attempts to invoke and exploit this, claiming that it's entirely possible that Reiji is in cahoots with his father and that they are both playing Standard and the Lancers for fools, and how they should just abandon him because of it, but right one cue when Reiji points out the flaw in this logic, Yuya goes and declares that they will trust Reiji no matter what, thus calling the bluff.
  • Anti-Hero: Everything he does is to stop his father, Leo Akaba who started a war between the Fusion and Xyz dimensions and does seem to honestly care for his town. But he has done a lot of morally gray actions in his quest, from manipulating his students and allies, to lying to his allies so he can experiment on their possibly dead ally's Duel Disk, and willingly using teenagers as soldiers.
  • Archnemesis Dad: The MCS is actually a way to distillate the strongest duelists in order to fight his father. He also flat out calls Leo Akaba his enemy.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In their second duel, Reiji asks Yuya if he is fine with leaving the other carded even if Yuzu is all right.

Awesome by Analysis: He was able to create a Pendulum counter deck based on his knowledge on Yuya's duels.

  • Badass:
    • He's one of the best duelists in the world, and he proves it. To date, the only duel he lost is one where he forfeited to Yuya, at a time when it wasn't fully clear who would win or lose. Then in Episode 51, he deals Yuya his first defeat since the second episode.
    • If you defeat the Arc Villain during your first turn, and you are able to defeat every hologram of the villain whenever they begin their turn, you are offfically the most badass character of the series.
  • Badass Bookworm: Being a CEO at age 16 and a professional duelist at age 15 certainly qualifies him even before we see what he can do.

He proves it even more when he duels, having mastered every form of summoning. He proceeds to show this by summoning a Fusion Monster, a Synchro Monster, AND an Xyz Monster in just two of his turns. He does this again 8 episodes later, but in one turn. It's pretty much explicitly stated that he managed to make his own Pendulum Monsters. Granted, they malfunction at first, but that's still a pretty big achievement.

  • Batman Gambit: Does this to Yuya in their second Duel.
  • Benevolent Boss: Even more so than his mother
  • Berserk Button: Dont insult or badmouth Yuya or the Sakaki family
  • Big Damn Heroes: Greets Roget by finishing Yuzu's "The Reason You Suck" Speech, followed by demanding him to unhand Yuzu. Roget obviously refuses and opts for giving her to Academia to save his own skin, forcing Reiji to take drastic measures.
  • Big Good: In spite of his morally ambiguous ways, he's the closest thing the show has to one, as he's dedicated to protecting Maiami from the forces of the other dimensions, and is fundamentally opposing Professor Leo Akaba, who's responsible for the war between Academia and the Resistance.
  • Big "Shut Up!": Shouts at Hokuto and Yaiba to make them stop trash talking Yuya's dad, declaring that he highly respects Yusho for being a pioneer in Action Duels.
  • Brutal Honesty: Outright tells Yuya that he can't save Yuzu with his naivety and self-righteousness
  • Character Tics: Primarily adjusting his glasses.
  • The Chessmaster: He's implied to have spent the last three years preparing for the inevitable inter-dimensional war when it comes to the Standard Dimension, and likes to be aware of everything that happens in the city to make sure it doesn't interfere with his plans. Episode 52 reveals that the Leo Duel Schools that have been set up around the world were a cover; they're actually Duel Monster-type military training camps where duelists learned the skills needed to prepare for the war with Academia, and with said war beginning the schools are opening to the public so everyone can learn to defend themselves in case of a second invasion.
  • Chick Magnet: As seen in Episode 27, he has a lot of fangirls.
  • Composite Character: A lot of his traits draw on aspects from previous Yu-Gi-Oh! rivals, most notably Seto Kaiba:
    • He's a sixteen year old CEO of a gaming corporation who uses a monster with a 3000 ATK Level 8 monster, which he runs three copies of in his Deck, and they are also the only ones that exist in the world (Though it's not a Dragon-type or something with "dragon" in the name).
    • He also considers his father an enemy (though for different reasons than Kaiba).
    • He does have a little brother, drawing parallels to Kaiba, Kaiser and Kaito.
    • He also channels Jack Atlas, as he mentions kings a lot in his summoning chants, and his monsters are named after famous conquerors. Ironic considering Jack is a character in this series.
    • Moving away from rivals, he also has some similarities to Rex Goodwin, with his morally ambiguous actions for some unstated duel, and keep an eye on duelists to bring out their potential.
    • His playing style is essentially a mix between Atem and Kaiba's playing styles. Like Kaiba, Reiji plays a lot of powerhouses and can defeat the opponent through overwhelming beatdowns, but he has much more varieties and relies a lot on Spell Cards and combos, like Atem. And like Atem, Reiji does not focus on a single ace monster, but has a an entire army of reliable monsters in his arsenal.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: His Duel against Roget is basically this. He defeats the first Roget hologram with an OTK, and then he defeats the second one during the hologram's Draw Phase. Reiji would repeat the same combo to all of the next holograms.
  • Deadpan Snarker:Towards Roger whenever he speaks to him he will often snark and him.He also snarks at Yuya during their second duel
  • Dark Is Not Evil: In spite of his DARK Fiend-Type deck, Reiji is a polite and reasonable person and proves to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist.
  • Dub Name Change: Reiji to Declan, and DD to D/D.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: How "bad" he is is anyone's guess, but he's on very good terms with his mother Himika, though she's also bad and they're quite formal with one another (likely because of their positions within Leo Corporation, though).
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Though he is an antagonist at first, he's easily the nicest LDS associate so far, and yelled at Yaiba and Hokuto for badmouthing Yusho Sakaki.
  • Everyone Has Standards:Reiji might be a very morally ambiguous character but even he was uncomfortable about using Reira, a very traumtized child, to battle against the Academia. He also seems fine with the idea that Reira is gaining a will unlike Himika.

And according to Tsukikage, he won't abandon his comrades, meaning that the loss of his first team of Lancers was likely unintentional.

  • Evil Laugh: Delivers one in Episode 13 after he realizes the true potential of Pendulum Monsters.
  • Foil: To Yuya, they are both the aces of their schools and are Pendulum users. While Reiji is well respected as the head of the top duel school at the start of the series, Yuya is looked down upon because of his father and is a member of a duel school made up of only 5 people. They both hide their emotions, Yuya using laughter and smiles compared to Reiji's stoicism. Their relationships with their fathers are completely different as well. Yuya's father disappeared but Yuya still thinks very highly of him, while Reiji doubts his father even cares enough about him that he would be a useful hostage. his is furthered in their methods in dealing with the interdimensional war. Yuya attempts to still bring smiles to his opponents, while Reiji is willing to do anything to gain the upper hand against the Academia, even willing to sacrifice his men. Also, Reira also sees both of them as brother figures and both Reiji and Yuya care about him in different ways.
  • Frontline General: In spite of having command of an entire corporation, Reiji has a habit of confronting enemy agents in person, doing so with Kurosaki and Serena and Barrett. Later going personally with the Lancers to the Synchro Dimension.
  • Improbable Age: In a stunning homage to Kaiba, Reiji is the head of a corporation which practically owns Maiami City at just 16, as well as being a pro duelist at the same time. On top of that, he's basically leading the effort to deal with an interdimensional war.

This is deconstructed in the Battle Royal mini-arc. While the Battle Royal plan is sound on paper, in reality it runs into problems. Underestimating how long the invasion would go on, he forces the town to stay in the stadium, causing some to question what is going on. His first bunch of Lancers' decks were mismatched, lowering their efficiency as a team, which leads to their defeat. And his attempt to keep the invasion under wraps puts the MCS duelists in danger. All these problems show that while he's intelligent, he's lacking in experience.

  • Invincible Hero: The most competent and ruthless among the "Kaibas". So far, his only loss is against Yuya in their first Duel because he threw himself out of the ring to deal with Marco's disappearance.
  • Japanese Pronouns: The CEO of Leo Corporation uses the formal pronoun watashi, which also fits to his respectful character. He used to use "boku" until he learned what his father was doing, after which we actually see him switch to "watashi".
  • The Leader: Of the Lancers. Most of them get captured in three days in the Synchro Dimension when he's not around.
  • Noble Demon: His DD deck contains Fiend-type monsters, but Reiji is the leader of the heroes and his noble goals.
  • Not So Stoic: His Big "Shut Up!" moment. He exploded. Again in Episode 13, where he performs an Evil Laugh and while his face is covered by his hand, his eyes look crazy. His backstory reveals that he wasn't stoic three years ago.
  • Oedipus Complex: Cares for his mother, not to a creepy extent, but hates his father, Leo Akaba.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: In a flashback in Episode 86, Reiji takes on every single Security guard holding him and the Council hostage, simultaneously. He beats all of them.
  • One-Hit Kill: Of course, The Ace of the Lancers, Reiji is also capable of this. He defeats the Arc Villain Roget in one turn. Furthermore, even after it is revealed that Roget can re-join the duel everytime after losing thanks to his hologram clones, Reiji simply uses a loop combo that defeats every hologram during its Draw Phase.
  • Out of Focus: In Season 2. While everyone else is running around the Synchro Dimension dueling and getting Character Development, Reiji has spent most of the season talking to the Executive Council in their chambers, watching the others duel, and very rarely taking some action to further his unrevealed overarcing plans. He does duel the Arc Villain in the end of the season, though.
  • Pet the Dog: While Reiji is morally ambiguous, at least he's a Benevolent Boss who has complete faith in Yuya and the Lancers because he knows that they're the ones who will beat the crap out of Security and Academia.
  • The Power of Trust:He has a great faith and trust in his fellow lancers
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Berates the Exective Council for their Dirty Coward attitude, telling them that those who prefer being neutral and sitting on their asses have no right to talk about the future.
  • The Rival: To Yuya, despite being a Broken Pedestal to the latter.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Instead of having a Badass Longcoat that defies gravity and has a Dramatic Wind, Reiji has a scarf that does and has all of that. His scarf is more badass when you learn that he's been a duelist with the potential needed to be a pro since he was 15, owns the famous Leo Duel School at 16 and he specializes in all types of summoning.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality:He mostly shows his icy side but deep inside his heart he is on sugar side despite being morally ambiguous which he does shows his sugar side at times
  • Shut UP, Hannibal: His response to Roget's offer and cowardice.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: His attitude towards Yuya's kindness.
  • The Smart Guy: While the Leader of the Lancers, he is also The Strategist and the most intelligent member.
  • The Stoic: He's usually calm and collected and rarely shows emotions.
  • Supporting Leader: He is the leader of the Lancers and the tritagonst, so he is definitively this.
  • Tranquil Fury: He's visibly angry when the Executive Council insults Yuya and none of the Synchro Dimension cares about what happens to the losers of the Friendship Cup.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Episode 41 showed him as a :Nice guy three years ago who would willingly rescue a girl he didn't know. In the present, while he still has good intentions, he is a rather gray character.
  • The Watcher: After his duel with Yuya he has done little in the way of getting directly involved with the plot. Mostly observing Duels from his private room and having Nakajima run errands for him, such as giving Kurosaki a Pendulum Card and having him take Yuto's Duel Disk. This is justified since he's running the tournament and creating an army to defend against the Fusion Dimension. He's finally got another duel as of episode 40 with Barrett from Academia and another one against Yuya in Episode 50. He returns to this role during the Friendship Cup until its final moments.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: As stated in Anti-Hero, he just wants to protect his dimension but he has done some really dark things in his quest.
  • When He Smiles: Lets out one of these after Reira hugs him in Episode 95.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Yuya one and doesn't even consider that he is the perpetrator attacking LDS students.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Aside from his silver hair color, it's actually fairly subdued.
  • Younger Than They Look: For a 16 year-old, he appears more like 18 or 19. The demeanor and voice might have something to do with it.

The Lancers

Noboru Gongenzaka (Gong Strong)

One of Yuyas best friend who is seen regularly hanging around with him. He is not the student of You show instead he is a heir to his family dojo but he is regularly seen hanging out with his friends in Youshow. He later becomes one of the lancers. Gongenzaka's Superheavy Samurai deck has no Spell or Trap cards at all, and many of his monster effects can only be activated when he has no S/T in his Graveyard

  • Acrofatic: Well, he's more big than fat, but the sizeable guy goes on morning runs. Episode 30 shows that he's actually pretty muscular.
  • can learn, he doesn't care if he has to beg.
  • Badass: Karate-chopped through Battleguard Mad Shaman's spike without flinching. He also saves Yuya by holding up a stone pillar twice his size with no injury. Granted, it was Solid Vision, but still dangerous. Also, he fought his way halfway to Kurosaki's solitary confinement cell armed only with his (metal) geta.
  • Badass Back: In his duel against Ankokuji, he goes into the arena and gives him the back in order to show his dislike for him as well as to show his new black belt. And damn, he looked badass.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's really a nice and easy-going guy, but get on his bad side or face him in a duel, and he'll show you what Steadfast Dueling is really about.
  • The Big Guy: He is very definitely one of the bigger characters. His deck also runs a Stone Wall strategy.
  • Bully Hunter: He protected Yuya when they were younger, from those who wanted to beat him up for being a coward's son.

  • Gentle Giant: He can be a bit stuffy, but he's a pretty nice guy.
  • Good Is Not Soft: One of the nicest, most morally upright characters on the show, and he's proven himself perfectly capable of kicking lots of ass.
  • Graceful Loser: He didn't really mind losing to Yuya and was simply happy to force Yuya to pass his limits. And again when he is defeated by Crow.
  • Heir to the Dojo: And heir of said dojo's Dueling style that he uses with pride.
  • Hot-Blooded: Odd example; he's a very staunch and enthusiastic proponent of his own family's Steadfast Dueling style, which means that he doesn't care for the other Hot-Blooded characters running around during Action Duels, as "real men don't make unnecessary movements." While he can be very emotional, Gongenzaka is one of the most level-headed characters and tries tokeep the others in line when they are acting unreasonably.

An egotistical and a Plucky Comic Relief LDS student. He was initially The Rival to Yuya during the first season.He frequently changes deck His first one is a Darts Shooter deck; his second is a WATER Monarch deck; his third is a Yosenju deck; his fourth and final is an Abyss Actor deck.

  • Advertised Extra: He's introduced as one of the main rivals of Yuya and is prominently shown in the first opening and promotional materials, indicating that he's a main character. However, he rarely shows up and he is quickly forgotten for most of the time. He finally returns as a main character at the climax of the Battle Royale and he still appears from there, being one of the nine Lancers.
  • Ascended Extra: He's one of the five ARC-V main characters in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special, probably as a nod to his early status in the series. Sawatari basically took Reiji's spot, of all people.
  • Attack Backfire: His duel with Yuto. The latter starts off by setting five Spell/Trap Cards. Sawatari takes the bait and, using a new Deck he made, sends all of them to the Graveyard. This allows Yuto to win the duel, via Spell Cards with effects that activate from the Graveyard.
  • Badass: He manages to corner Yugo without any Action cards, and only lost because Yugo synchronizing with Yuya allowed him to grab an Action

  • Blatant Lies: A lot of his bragging crosses into this. One example is him stating he was undefeated in Standard and Yuya is his student. Another example is stating himself as leader of the Lancers in Episode 70 when he's angry about not being chosen to duel next.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He rushes in to save Tsukikage in the Battle Royale.
  • Bishie Sparkle: In episode 15, while handing a napkin to Yuzu. Just look at him.◊
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Tricks Yuya into letting him see the Pendulum Cards, and then steals them by pretending to be his friend.
  • Butt Monkey: Sawatari has lost most of his on-screen duels despite painting himself as a great duelistnote . Whenever he tries to brag, people either don't listen to him, cut him off, or chew him out for his small talk being used to cover his incompetence whilst acting like a brat for losing. Even his loyal friends notice this sometimes. He, however, does get to be a Lancer. But even then, the first thing that happened to him was losing in an OTK and getting arrested. Heck, despite interacting with Crow's orphaned kids for a while, Sawatari doesn't register so much as a blip in their memories and they dismiss him pretty easily.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: After a bit of Character Development, he comes back with a DARK Fiend deck, the Abyss Actor.
  • Foil: On the Lancers, he and Gongenzaka are foils. Sawatari is an egotistical glory hound that can't stand anyone badmouthing him while Gongenzaka is a steadfast and loyal friend that has willingly stepped out of the limelight to protect them. Gongenzaka understands the emotional effects of being a child soldier while Sawatari was giddy at being a Lancer. Gongenzaka is loyal to his dueling style while Sawatari has changed his decks after each loss. Gongenzaka realizes the folly of challenging opponents to duels for no good reason and keeps his cool whereas Sawatari loses his composure at the drop of a hat and recklessly jumps into avoidable situations.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Given Sawatari's personality, he is this to everyone he interacts to, with the exception of his dad. His three "best friends" are more like minions if anything, given that they grudgingly follow his orders and even call out Sawatari's hypocrisy at times. As part of the Lancers, the rest of the group either ignore him (Serena, Kurosaki, and Reira), tolerate him (Yuya, Reiji, and Tsukikage), humors him (Dennis) or outright puts him in his place (Gongenzaka).
    • Ironically he has a few Synchro Dimension people come to like him, such as Crow, Tokumatsu and Yugo. However, they're not around enough to enforce this and Sawatari generally goes back into being this trope, especially after getting sent to the Xyz Dimension with Yuya, Gongenzaka and Kurosaki.
  • Gratuitous English: He has a lot of this.
  • Gratuitous French: The English dub has him occasionally saying French phrases instead of the above.
  • An Ice Person: After losing to Yuya, he starts running Monarchs, specifically Mobius the Frost Monarch and its upgraded form. He quickly switched decks soon.
  • Idiot Ball: In his first duel with Yuya, it's shown very clearly that Sawatari has a copy of "Breakthrough Skill" in his hand, which would have negated at least one of the effects Yuya used throughout the Duel, particularly at points where Yuya could have lost or where Sawatari could have lost. Pride is Sawatari's Fatal Flaw though, and he's later insulted by Yuto for bad dueling skills.
  • Idiot HeroSubverted. Sawatari frequently messes up and acts stupid, but as seen in his duel with Kaito, he's capable of some very good deductions.
  • Jerkass: He starts the series as this; his Establishing Character Moment involves stealing Yuya's Pendulum Monsters and then forcing Yuzu and the kids into danger so he can test the cards out. And after he loses, he tries to get his friends to help him steal the cards by force.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Once he develops his entertainer persona and becomes a Lancer, he begins to edge more into this, having genuinely good intentions while still being kind of a jerk. His dueling style also begins to focus less on hogging the spotlight and more on exciting the crowd to either side's benefit.
  • Large Ham: After Yuya Gets Him Doing It, Sawatari ups his hamminess.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Among the Lancers, he serves as this by way of being the Butt Monkey for basically everyone. He is also the least serious character among the Lancers. This is probably the reason why he is with Yuya, Gongenzaka and Kurosaki, all three of them being serious characters, especially the latter two.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starting from the Synchro Dimension arc, he gains Abyss Actors, and from then on is shown to actually be a halfway-competent duelist wielding an actually-powerful deck. Both of the duels he gets on-screen after he reveals his new archetype have shown that he is fully capable of hard-countering numerous deck types if the plot didn't dictate that he lose so often.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After his rematch with Yuya, he starts embracing the "performer" life like Yuya does, and later turns the goal of a duel to entertaining the crowd, which is reflected in his Abyss Actor deck. While he's still a Sore Loser, he doesn't mind if the crowd had fun because of him.

Reira Akaba (Riley Akaba)

Reijis adoptive younger brother. He was found in the warzone country and was adopted by the Akabas family to become a child soldier to defeat academia and he later becomes one of the Lancers. Reira is very quite who rarely talks and has no emotion due to being in the war zone but after meeting Yuya and Crows kids and staying with them for a while Reiras started to develop and he slowly became a bit emotional and confident of himself and his skills. Reira uses a CC deck that focuses on copying his opponents monster and like his brother his deck also specilizes in different summoning method Fusion,Synchro and XYZ it is currently unknown if he uses Pendulum or not

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Platonic version, but his actions in Episode 67 were because both Yuya and Shinji were kind to him, so he refused to duel Shinji and ran to Yuya for comfort.
  • Big Brother Worship/Living Emotional Crutch: Reiji seems to be the only person he cares about in the world. This is made clear when it's shown that Reira sees everything dark except of the little space where Reiji is and he manage to win his duel after seeing that Reiji is watching him.

Reira seems more normal when his brother is with him. Being a shy kid compared to the emotionless creepy child he is when Reiji isn't around. He gives his first smile when Tatsuya says he's similar to Reiji. Later this extends to Yuya, immediately calming down when he's saved by him from the Obelisk Force, and Jack Atlas, smiling when he notices that Jack's proud of his dueling skills against a security member.

  • Broken Bird: The card he used to nullify the effects of Ayu's cards on her side of the field show that he sees the world as a cold, grey place. Later revealed due to his environment where he grew up.
  • Camera Fiend: A rather literal example with his deck.
  • Character Development:Although he was initially shaky after becoming an Empty Shell, becoming a Yandere towards his brother and wanting Tsukikage to lose. After talking to Jack Atlas, he becomes a better person, wanting to become a brave duelist on his own, apologizes to Tsukikage and encourages Yuya to defeat Jack.

Brought to a head during episode 86, where he bravely fights and defeats three Security members to prevent them from taking Serena. Quite different from the cowardly Shrinking Violet he used to be.

  • Creepy Child: His emotionless behavior can make people uncomfortable around him. He also has his eyes constantly wide open and is always looking at the ground.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Reira isn't actually related to the Akabas, but a child from a country where a war has raged on for decades. He lost any sense of will and identity and learned to copy people perfectly to survive. He was adopted by Himika to be made into a duel soldier against Academia.
  • Dub Name Change: From "Reira" to "Riley".
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Has them almost all the time. After he gets a pep talk from Jack Atlas, these go away with his Character Development.
  • Emotionless Boy: He talks with a dull voice, and when Ayu tried to do the "Action Duel" speech, Reira's lines sounded very depressing. However, he's slowly come out of his shell as part of his Character Development.
  • Empty Shell: Reira was this when he was adopted by Himika. He was all alone in a war-torn country, where he lost all his identity and will to survive.
  • Expy: Like Haruto, he is the Nervous Wreck younger brother of the Kaiba Expy, however once his backstory is revealed he has quite a bit in common with Mokuba, due to being adopted and for his forays into Creepy Child.
  • Family Theme Naming: Reira, like Reiji and Leo, have the the kanji of zero (零) in their names.
  • Grew a Spine: As a result of his Character Development, Reira gains courage and is able to bravely face his opponents (as long as his PTSD doesn't trigger).
  • In the Hood: Coupled with Hidden Eyes to empathize his creepiness and brokeness. He also wears a cap under his hood.
  • Just a Kid: Some characters who haven't seen him duel like Sawatari and Kurosaki are dismissive of him and find it hard to believe such a young boy could be a competent duelist. Skills aside, they are not completely wrong either. He's not as brave as the others and Yuya has to tell Reiji in his face that Reira is way too young to be a Lancer.
  • Light Is Good: Film Magician, in honor of Yuya and Jack's influences.
  • Mommy Issues: It's made obvious that this little boy is afraid of his own mother. Might be due to the fact that Reira was experimented by her to become a Duel Soldier and that she is not his biologicl mother.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He feels terrible when he realizes Tsukikage was Made a Slave because of him.
  • Nervous Wreck: Reira seems to be scared of people; he jumped when the public in the stadium started to cheer for Reiji and also when the news reporter tried to talk with him.
  • Nice Hat: He wears a cap under his hood.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: He defeats at least six Obelisk Force members on his own.
  • Parental Abandonment: We have no idea what happened to his biological family. Himika simply said he was all by himself, which leads to some very depressing or disturbing conclusions.
  • Protectorate: While in the Synchro Dimension, Yuya has taken the role of a protective big brother towards him. In a straighter example, the OP and ED imply he's this to Tsukikage, by Reiji's orders.

Also appears to be one for Reiji in a different sort of way, as Reiji attempts to help Reira develop his own personality and apparently brought Reira into the Synchro Dimension because he honestly believes Reira is strong enough to handle it, even reassuring him and giving him slack when the kid refuses to duel.

  • The Quiet One: He rarely talks, due to his timid personality. But as his character development goes on he becomes more and more talkative
  • Reality Ensues:The kid may be a good duelist on par of the other Lancers, but he's still just a little kid. He's scared stiff when he arrives in the Synchro Dimension without Reiji.Despite being a good duelist, he also tires much easier than the older Lancers, and after beating three Security officers and two Obelisk Force squads in a row, he is exhausted... and his PTSD is triggered.
  • Security Blanket: He only separates of his teddy bear when it's time to duel.
  • Shrinking Violet: When around Reiji. Ironically, this is when he's more emotional.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": The Versus Character Splash shows his name as "Layra". His name is actually written in kanji, so it cannot be anything else than a Japanese name. However, since he was found in a country that was in war, he is probably not even Japanese and "Layra" might be indeed the correct spelling.
  • Tag Along Kid: To the Lancers. Reiji insists he's as good a duelist as any of them (and he's right), but Reira is this until he gets his C Haracter Development and then hands three Security officers their asses.
  • Trauma Conga Line: His entire life is one. As stated in The Reveal, Reira has no sense of will or identity and is being used by the Akabas to defeat the Academia - putting him through even more pain despite being only a child.
  • Trigger: The way the Obelisk Force move and look cause him to remember the gas-masked soldiers from his former home country, sending him into a lapse of PTSD.
  • Tyke Bomb: Reira was adopted by Himika for the sole purpose of defeating Academia.
  • Yandere: When he starts to get his own will, he is worried that Tsukikage is better liked by Reiji, and wants him to lose. However, he is horrified by how callous Reiji is towards the loss, and even more horrified when he realizes that Tsukikage was Made a Slave because of him.

Serena (Celina)

A girl that resembles Yuzu from the Fusion Dimension Academia she is later reveled to be Yuzus fusion dimensional counterpart. Serena has held in Academia against her will for so many years despite being on their side.After hearing that their are some xyz remnants in standard she travels to Standard dimension with Barret without Professors permission and seeks to prove to Leo Akaba that she is worthy enough for being a front liner soldier after hearing the Academia's true colors from Yuzu her standard counterpart Serena changes side and is now one of Reijis lancers, Serena uses Moonlight deck which is a dark attribute animal like female monsters unlike Yuzus deck Serena's deck is very offensive.Similar to Yuri Serena has doppelgangers throughout the other dimensions: Yuzu (Standard), Ruri (Xyz) and Rin (Synchro).

  • 100% Adoration Rating: She is the only character in the Synchro arc to be loved by both the Commons and Tops.
  • Alleged Lookalikes: With Yuzu, Ruri, and Rin. A few friends from Standard mistake her for Yuzu several times, Yuzu mistakes her for Ruri briefly until she concludes that Serena is her Fusion counterpart, and Yugo mistakes her for Rin prior to their first duel.
  • Almighty Janitor: In her first outfit, she wore the alternate Duel Academia's version of the Osiris Red uniform, Osiris Red being the lowest dorm.
  • Badass: An overall competent duelist, that beats most of her opponents, with a good beatdown strategy.
  • Badass Adorable: Not to Yuzu's extent, though she is cute at times, such as when she pouts in her prison cell, and comes to enjoy her duel with Yugo.
  • Biker Babe: Becomes a D-Wheeler in the Synchro Dimension.
  • Berserk Button: People not treating her seriously in a duel.
  • Blood Knight: She is really combat happy, refusing to retreat or anything. It's to the point that in episode 59, even Sawatari starts to get annoyed with her wasting time dueling people instead of looking for Yuzu.
  • Broken Pedestal: The look on her face when she heard of the attack on the Heartland from Kurosaki told us all we need to know how she feels about the Academia.
  • Brutal Honesty: Because of her lack of social skills, she regularly speaks her mind when people have disappointed her like when she mocked Crow for not finding any clues about Yuzu when she was staying with him or showing her disappointment when she faces off against Yugo and flat-out tells him that his dueling style is flawed.
  • Cat Girl: She has two of them in her deck, including her Fusion Monster Lunalight Cat Dancer. Four with Panther Dancer and Lio Dancer.
  • Character Development: During her duel with Yugo, she starts to see the reasons behind Yuya's philosophy after she begins enjoying herself during a duel for the first time.
    • As the series goes on, Serena is no longer as confrontational as she was when first introduced and learns to appreciate the people who care for her like Yuya and Reira. She also finally acknowledges what Academia is doing is wrong; when Barrett offers to take her back to Academia and sweetens the deal by promising to give her exactly what she wanted from the Professor, she outright refuses.

  • Clothing Switch: With Yuzu, so she could talk to Kurosaki. This is the reason why Yuzu still wears her clothes until the beginning of the Friendship Cup.

  • The Comically Serious: Serena has her moments in the show when she's not being arrogant. Episode 62 actually shows Serena pouting in her jail cell before being rescued. The special Omake corners that airs at the end of an episode has her either complaining about Sawatari's incompetence or getting flustered by Yuya's silliness.
  • Contralto of Danger: Her voice is deeper than Yuzu's, and Serena is willing to hurt Xyz duelists, regardless whether they are from the Xyz Dimension or not.
  • Damsel in Distress:Becomes one in Episode 86 when she's incapacitated with Nerve Gas and captured by Roget's Security Force en route to the Underground Facility. Fortunately, she is saved by Reira and Tsukikage. Later she is protected by Yuya and Sora. Unfortunately all four fail in the end and she's successfully captured by Barrett after his loss to Sergey, once again becoming Academia's prisoner.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her Lunalight deck is DARK-attribute, but she herself proves to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist.
  • Defector from Decadence: She does a Heel–Face Turn after seeing the actual methods Academia uses.
  • Dub Name Change: Her monsters are called "Lunalight" in the English version as opposed to "Moonlight" in the original version, though her name is only changed in spelling.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Yuzu. Serena hunts Xyz duelists and seals them in cards, including Hokuto. Subverted when she learns about the atrocities Academia commits, which causes her allegiance to shift.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: She and Yuzu share the same seiyuu, but Serena's voice is noticeably deeper. She's also not really "evil", unlike the dimensional counterpart of Yuya.
  • Expy: Like Yuzu, she has similarities with past Yu-Gi-Oh! female characters. Due to being from Fusion she is like Asuka being a Dance Battler and Blood Knight (albeit much, much more pronounced than Asuka). Her personality and introduction, starting as an enemy and joining the heroic team when she realizes how evil the threat is, is like Aki's appearances in Season 1 and early Season 2 of 5Ds. Sawatari's crush on her is another holdover from Asuka.
  • Fan Boy: She has a lot of these among the Commons in Synchro.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears a glove on one hand, a bracelet on the other. After her outfit change, this is no longer the case.
  • Fingerless Gloves: The single left glove. After her outfit change, this is no longer the case.
  • Foil: She's one to fellow Lancer, Kurosaki. Kurosaki is a survivor from the Xyz dimension that has lost everything and in his attempt to get it back has done so very brutal things and has shown no remorse for it. While Serena was protected by the Academia in the Fusion dimension and threw away her home when she was horrified by their actions.
    • She is also one to Yuzu, both of them are dimensional counterparts, but while Yuzu is kind, friendly, compassionate, and is always willing to listen, Serena has No Social Skills, is callous, belligerent, has little patience and yearns to prove herself, but like Yuzu, she has good intentions and after learning the truth behind the Heartland invasion she joined the Lancers
  • Gilded Cage: Implied. Serena is as much of a prisoner and vital part of his plan to the Professor as Ruri and Rin are, but the difference is that she doesn't know it. She only thinks that the Professor doesn't consider her strong enough to be in the front lines so she was kept inside the curiously castle-like Academia and never allowed to leave, with every attempt of escape failing. She only was able to escape this time thanks to the Professor keeping an eye on Standard instead of her for once.
  • Good Costume Switch: After becoming a Lancer she changes her outfit to a set of casual clothes that resemble her old Academia uniform. It involves a less evil looking red-jacket and a white skirt.
  • Graceful Loser: She took her loss to Yugo well, even happily shaking his hand and wishing him luck for the rest of the Friendship Cup.
  • Gravity Master: Her summon chants for her Fusion Monsters invoke the moon's gravity.
    • "Swarm in a vortex of the moon's gravity and revive with a new power!"
  • Hair Decorations: A yellow ribbon in contrast to Yuzu's blue clips.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Just like Yuzu, but for very different reasons. While Yuzu is normally calm and collected but easily pissed at people's idiocy, Serena is bitter that her potential is getting wasted and hates that people are looking down at or mocking her.
  • Heroic Resolve: She declares that she'll save Yuzu as Yuzu opened her eyes about the Academia and it was her fault that Yuzu was captured.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She betrays Academia and ends up fighting side-by-side with Standard and Kurosaki. Serena also becomes one of Reiji's eight Lancers.
  • Heel Realization: She's utterly horrified when Kurosaki tells her the truth about Academia's attacks on Heartland.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Barrett.
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuzu, Ruri, and Rin. She even sounds like Yuzu; granted, they share a voice actor.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Despite her talent, the Professor keeps her cooped up in Academia and refuses to let her go out on the front lines. She hates this.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: In episode 88, she insists Tsukikage and Reira abandon her since she can't move. They refuse. Done again in episode 91, when she sees how much Yuya and Reira are struggling to keep Barrett and Obelisk Force away from her and she wants them to run; again, they refuse.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Doesn't think anything of stripping off her jacket when Yuzu suggests they switch clothes. She probably would have gone further had Yuzu not stopped her.
  • In the Hood: Keeps a black hood over her face, so she can walk in Maiami City more freely.
  • Japanese Pronouns: She uses the gender neutral watashi, in contrast to Yuzu's feminine atashi.
  • Jerkass: Rude to everyone she interacts with, such as Reiji and her own bodyguard, Barrett. Calls Dennis pathetic after she beats him in a duel that he wasn't going all out for.
    • Later she calls Crow an incompetent coward for "staying in one place" and not producing answers about Yuzu's whereabouts...despite the fact that Crow gave them shelter in the first place and Security is essentially everywhere, with one wrong move leading to them getting arrested... which does occur later.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • She's grateful to Barrett for going with her to Standard. Drops the "gold" part when she coldly walks away from Barrett after he was beaten in his duel with Reiji, showing that she only really cares about herself, despite Barrett being the one decent Fusion user who doesn't take outward pleasure in attacking others nor did anything to prevent her from leaving Academia in the first place.
    • She regains it later when she proves that she's not like her other companions from Academia, namely taking pleasure in the suffering of others. Yuzu makes her realize that the Xyz Dimension duelists had families as well and that Academia went around attacking EVERYONE, not just duelists, which she made the mistake of thinking that all citizens from the Xyz Dimension were. She later becomes disgusted and horrified when she witnesses Sora attacking Kurosaki, the guy that she was "hunting" all this time, and after Kurosaki relates the story of Academia's attack on Heartland.
    • Despite her arrogance, Serena can be seen glowing with pride over watching Yuzu duel and reacting in horror over Yuzu's lost to Sergey.
    • She later admits to Yugo that she was impressed with his duel with Sawatari.
  • Karma Houdini: Granted, she doesn't stay a villain forever, but she doesn't really get any sort of comeuppance for carding Hokuto.
  • The Last of These Is Not Like the Others: Unlike Yuzu, Ruri, and Rin and their feelings towards their respective "Yuya", she cares nothing for Yuri nor gives any acknowledgement that she knows him.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The third opening and upcoming official materials (such as posters or covers) reveal her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Living MacGuffin: Like the rest of the Yuzu counterparts, serves as one to the Professor for unknown reasons.
  • Magnetic Plot Device: Her bracelet is one, just like Yuzu's.
  • Megaton Punch: Serena delivers a hilarious one to Yugo in Episode 84 when he tries to hug her; he made the mistake of confusing a counterpart for Rin...again. In the episode prior she did this twice!
  • Modesty Shorts: Is wearing what looks like black biking shorts under a red skirt in her first outfit.
  • Multicolored Hair: Has dark blue hair and two bangs that are light blue, similar to Yuzu, Ruri and Rin.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Being raised in Fusion, this is her primary attribute. She's always very serious in her dueling and hates it when her opponents are weak or aren't taking the duel seriously.
  • No Social Skills: Supplementary materials reveal that she has never left Academia prior to Episode 38 and that she only learned how to duel, but at the cost of learning social skills. Which explains why she believed that every person is a duelist and also her not seeing anything wrong about stripping out in the open.
  • Not So Above It All: Serena is one of the most serious characters in the series... yet special Omake corners after any episode that features her show that she:
    • Has a fondness for sweets like Sora.
    • Is jealous of Kurosaki for having monsters that can fly and wants one too.
    • Can get nervous before a duel and walk off completely in the wrong direction.
    • In the show proper, she was pouting like crazy when the rest of the Lancers sans Kurosaki were escaping and when Yugo complains about her saying Fusion (Yugou in Japanese), she yells back to shut up and let her duel.
  • Perpetual Frowner: In contrast to Yuzu, Serena is usually seen with a scowl on her face.
  • Pride: Believes her own skill in dueling to be so great that she gets pissed that the Professor is keeping her secluded on Academia. However, this blinds her to the fact that by attacking anyone who's not a Fusion duelist (namely anyone who can Xyz Summon), she's causing more harm than good and doesn't think of the consequences her actions could potentially bring.
  • Refusal of the Call: She rejects Reiji's offer to join him. After seeing Academia for what it really is, she ends up as a Lancer.
  • Serious Business: Prior to her duel with Yugo, Serena didn't view Duel Monsters as a game, but as a duel between two warriors who are fighting for their honor.
  • Smug Smiler: When not frowning, Serena loves doing this to her opponents whenever she gets the upper hand.
  • The Smurfette Principle:The only girl in Reiji's Lancers.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Similar to Kurosaki, Serena doesn't appreciate being saved from danger, stating that she has the situation "handled" and sees someone helping her out as someone who is underestimating her abilities, which she hates. In Episode 56, she, along with Yuya, Reira and Sawatari, are surrounded by Security forces; when Yuya offers to distract them and begs her to take Reira to safety, Serena just screams back that she's no coward and she intends to wipe everyone out...despite being surrounded by at least thirteen duelists at once. However, she does at least acknowledge that she'll need to work in a group if she intends to save Yuzu and protect her from Academia.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Subverted. While her deck is very feminine, the play-style of her deck revolves around attacking as much as possible while preventing her opponent from protecting themselves; fitting given some of her tendencies, so it might just be that she doesn't care for looks as long as what she's using works. She's also the only "Yuzu" counterpart who hasn't shown any form of closeness/affection towards her "Yuya" counterpart (though it's possible they haven't met yet.) note
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: To contrast Yuzu in appearance.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: During her duel with Yugo, she starts to enjoy dueling and states she finally understands what Yuya was talking about. Even being worried about Reira in the next episode when in previous episodes she had been apathetic to him.
  • War for Fun and Profit: Subverted, she rejects Yuzu's claim that the Academia sees their invasion of the Xyz Dimension as a game.
  • Well Done Daughter Gal: Wants to impress her mentor, Professor Leo Akaba, and make him proud enough to let her fight.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Her talk with Yuzu painted her as this. She fully believed that what the Professor wants to do is for the greater good. And even if the Xyz duelists lost, they still had their pride despite losing. She was shaken by the implication of the Xyz duelists having families that are not duelists and resolves to see Kurosaki to check if its true.
  • Worthy Opponent: Serena originally saw Yugo as this because of his duel against Sawatari, although she changes her mind when he spends his entire first turn summoning a single monster from his hand. In Episode 85, she revises her opinion once again seeing Yugo as one again.
  • When She Smiles: Although smug, Serena is capable of smiling genuinely; this is best seen when she watches Yuzu duel with Sergey, and she's beaming with pride over seeing her counterpart duel so spectacularly. Later when she starts to truly enjoy herself dueling, she starts to smile for real again.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Her hair is primarily dark purple. She also has two blue strands.

Tsukikage (Moon Shadow)

Voiced by: Manabu Sakamaki (JP), Eddy Lee (EN)

Tsukikage and his brother Hikage were hired by Reiji. He and his brother took part in Miami championship in which his brother was sealed in a card. Tsukikage later became one of the lancers and is Reijis personal bodyguard.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: While not twins (maybe, Hikage was referred to as the older brother), Although downplayed, in a Not So Stoic moment Tsukikage shows how deeply hurt he is by his brother's loss.
  • Ascended Extra: Tsukikage appeared as another duel school rival, and became a member of both groups of the Lancers.
  • Badass: Tsukikage worfs Mieru in their duel. Both ninjas were also selected by Reiji to be Lancers. More impressive are his ninja skills, making him arguably the most competent Lancer outside of a Duel (although he does have competition in Kurosaki).
  • Badass Normal: No Extra Deck or Pendulum Monsters, just normal Effect monsters. It doesn't prevent him from being any less of a Badass.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult his clan. Shinji saying that Tsukikage is no better than Security really riles him up, especially since his brother got carded doing his duty.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: His role around Reiji besides stealth. He's a capable duelist in his own right, though Reiji is of course Reiji. Though considering his abilities and his sword, he appears to be for non-dueling defense as well.
  • Dub Name Change: To "Moon Shadow". This is notable due to his name being a literal translation from the Japanese version.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. Tsukikage initially doesn't forgive Sora for carding Hikage, but Tsukikage is not blinded by his revenge to overlook that Sora is really protecting Yuzu. He becomes in better terms with him after Sora saves his life and they do eventually become partners during the last quarter of the Synchro Dimension arc. See Forgiven, but Not Forgotten below.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Tsukikage was ready to do this against the Obelisk Force, but Sawatari saves him.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: His outfit only has a sleeve on the right side. Note that Tsukikage is left-handed.
  • Flash Step: He can move faster than the human eye can see, to instantly move around the field and collect Action Cards. He can even move off his D-Wheel and move back while it is still in motion.
  • Foil: Tsukikage is one to fellow Lancer, Dennis. Dennis is a flashy mole who hides his vicious personality with kindness and smiles. While Tsukikage is a silent stoic that is absolutely loyal to his mission and is benevolent. They are both much more plot important than expected.

Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: He tells Sora grudges are unending, letting him know he won't forget that he carded his brother, but forgives him.

  • I Let You Win: During his duel with Shinji, Tsukikage manages to pick up an action card called "Evasion", which would've negated Shinji's strongest monster from attacking, thus saving him from losing the rest of his Life Points. He chooses to not use it, however, and loses on purpose on Reiji's ordersnote , in order to infiltrate the hidden Underground Facility.
  • It's Personal: Once he locates him, he confronts Sora to avenge his fallen brother, Hikage, who Sora carded scores of episodes earlier. However, he backs down when Yuzu convinces Sora to not fight and to help Yuya instead.
  • Left-Handed Mirror: Tsukikage is the blue, left-handed Ninja with a stalling strategy, while Hikage is the red, right-handed Ninja with an offensive strategy.
  • Made a Slave: Gets sent to the Underground, though Episode 73 shows escape isn't that difficult for a Ninja.

My Master, Right or Wrong: Subverted, while it initially seems he has Undying Loyalty, he makes it clear to Yuya he would have abandoned Reiji long ago if he was as cruel as Academia.

  • Nice Guy: Tsukikage is loyal to the Lancers, and kind, if a bit stoic. However, don't insult his clan to his face...
  • One-Hit Kill: Tsukikage pulled one of these, worfing Mieru.
  • Revenge: He seeks this against Sora, though agrees to wait to deal with him until after Yuya is saved. He eventually drops it and works with Sora together to save Yuzu and to foil Roget's plans.
  • The Southpaw: In a rarity for this series, Tsukikage's left-handed. However he uses his right hand in a Riding Duel.
  • Stealth Expert: Tsukikage is this for the Lancers, easily able to enter and leave the Underground Facility to bring information to Reiji.
  • Stone Wall: His deck is defensive, and his offensive strategy sacrifices Action Cards to inflict scratch damage, using his speed to collect all the Action Cards.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His dueling record is somewhat spotty as his strategy is ill-suited to Battle Royale-style play, but outside of dueling his ninja stealth abilities have been an invaluable asset for the Lancers.
  • The Worf Effect: Worfs Mieru, a powerful Ritual Duelist who had even Yuya on the ropes, when he finally gets to duel. He and Sora gets a two of these from Sergey physically and Roget in a duel, although the latter cheated with hologram clones.
  • Worf Had the Flu: He and Sora beat Roget once, but got thrown by him using Fighting a Shadow on them.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Tsukikage has dark blue hair.

Shun Kurosaki (Shay Obsidian)

Shun is one of the saviors along with Yuto for the invasion of xyz dimension and he is the member of the resistance.His younger sister Ruri was kidnap by Academia he and Yuto then traveled to Standard dimension where they both target LDS in order to lure out Reiji so that Professor can handle Ruri to him.After learning that he and Reiji shared the common enemy he then agreed to work with him. Reiji then made him the student of LDS he then took part in Miami championship.He harbours a deep vengeful hatred to academia due to the sufferings they have cost to him and his comrades.Despite his hostile and cold nature he is shown to care deeply about his comrades including Yuto and Ruri who are completely precious to him.Kurosaki uses a Raidraptor deck, which is made for swarming Winged-Beast-Type monsters to Xyz Summon monsters with low base-ATK, but powerful effects. He also has many Spell and Trap Cards that can counter various situations.

  • Anti-Hero: Almost to the point of Nominal Hero. He'll do anything to rescue his comrades and stop Academia, but his current actions include attacking innocents for going to LDS, showing a disregard for the safety of his own allies, and he has no hesitation about fighting anyone in his way regardless of their own moral standing. This also doesn't get into his intensely antisocial behavior and general Jerkass-ness.
  • Anime Hair: Bluish and a little spiky, but it is more subdued than the Yuto's.
  • Badass: Somewhat memetically so.
    • Beats two of LDS' aces, and later three employees at the same time. Then he defeats the LDS trio with a 16,400 ATK beatstick.
    • He becomes even more so in his duel with Sora, where he Ranks-Up his ace monster twice.
    • He escapes from solitary confinement in the Synchro Arc by climbing up above line of sight, then dropping down onto the guard that came into figure out where he went. He then beats up other guards on his way out.
    • He later defeats Dennis, despite the latter summoning a very powerful 4500 ATK giant!
    • Starts kicking everyone's ass Underground after he decides to leave, first with his fists then with his duel disk when he gets it back...both times, by himself.
  • Badass Boast:Generally, he tends to embellish the attacks and effects of his monsters to the effect of commanding his opponents to burn in the flames of revolution or bear the suffering of his comrades.
  • Badass in Distress: Suffers his first on-screen loss against Sora in their rematch and is injured because of it. Serena of all people has to save him from Sora and Obelisk Force and keep him safe.
  • Badass Longcoat: Wear a long blue-purple coat and looks tough with it. In episode 62, it gets shadowed nicely during his Death from Above moment.
  • Batman Gambit: He attacked LDS to lure out Reiji, so he can use him as a bartering chip against the Professor.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Mentioning his enemies, whoever they may be, severely pisses him off. Before he learned that they were the wrong target, any mention of the name LDS makes him nearly foam at the mouth. But it's Fusion Summoning that really hits his button. He first goes against LDS' Fusion teacher and his eyes react when anyone fuses when he doesn't know that they could. Academia, who captured Ruri, is from the Fusion Dimension.
    • Heartland, his hometown, is one to him. This is taken to its logical extreme when the Action Field selected for his duel with Sora is Future Metropolis Heartland. You can tell by the look on his face he is NOT happy with this choice. The second time it happens, he's so disturbed that he doesn't even go into one of his famous monologues.
    • Another smaller one is to say that his monsters are weak because they have low attack points. During duels, he typically responds with proving the person who said that wrong.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Kurosaki is so intent on attacking LDS because he believes his little sister Ruri was captured by them. He's later shown to be protective and more open to persuasion when talking to Serena due to her resemblance to Ruri.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Literally leaps into the duel against the Arrest Corps in episode 63 after they had taken control of all the Lancers' remaining monsters and proceeds to use those captured monsters to summon Rise Falcon, a monster which they couldn't take control of due to not possessing a level, and defeat all 3 of their opponents at the same time.With his Raid Raptors, he saves Yuya and the others by giving them a lift to the Duel Palace during the Riots.
  • Break the Haughty: Does this to Sora, and Sora does it back in turn in their second duel. Noticeable in that afterwards he actually shows appreciation for Tsukikage, Sawatari, Gongenzaka, and Serena helping him.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Doesn't even remember who Marco is, until Masumi brings up Fusion Summoning. It is possible however that he just didn't ask for his name. He's never asked anyone he duels for their names.
  • Character Development: His Duel against Kaito serves to reaffirm his growth as a character throughout the series thus far, where he has learned to treasure the bonds he has formed with his allies and trust them.
  • Character Tic: He has a tendency to expand his eyes and point with his right index and middle fingers when ordering his Xyz monsters to attack.
  • The Comically Serious: When Sora tries to do the "Action Duel" chanting, Kurosaki doesn't even open his mouth to say he's not fooling around. He's especially this in the third ending, participating in all the crazy antics depicted without a single smile save on the cards at the end where all of them are smiling.
    • During the escape from the Underground in Episode 90, he's paired with Sawatari. This is pretty much a given.
  • Crazy-Prepared: As shown during his duel against Sora, Kurosaki manages to counter basically everything against him. Especially his last card Rank-Up Magic Revolution Force only works in a specific situation, yet Kurosaki gets the chance to use it.

Does it again in his rematch with Sora. Not wanting to drag out the duel and fuel Sora's prideful lust for revenge, Kurosaki prepares a complicated strategy before attacking: summons in his first turn three copies of Force Strix and powers them up to a point where he could potentially OTK the kid. It fails off-screen and Sora subsequently defeats him.

  • Curb Stomp Battle: He annihilates Masumi, Hokuto and Yaiba in Episode 24. Later goes on to dominate Sora and the Knight duelists utterly, and wipes the Arrest Corps within seconds of joining. Then there's his escape from the underground labor facility.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Academia invaded Heartland City, turned it into an interdimensional battle ground, and carded most of its citizens. His sister, Ruri, was kidnapped as well.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Though morally ambiguous enough to steal the souls of LDS employees.
  • Deadpan Snarker: In the dub.
  • Determinator: He and his comrades had to get up again and again to defeat their enemies.
    • This is to the point all of his summon chants describe this trait.
  • Dub Name Change. To Shay Obsidian.
  • Enemy Mine: With Reiji, to defeat Professor Leo Akaba.
  • Expy: His coat and overall attitude is similar to Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom, when Kaiba was also trying to single-handedly mount a rescue of his younger sibling, doing whatever it takes to draw out the culprit. He is also one for Shark, being the revenge minded older brother, and in personality he takes more after Shark.
  • Eviler Than Thou: Episode 75 has shown him to be the most anti-heroic character on the Lancers, being the only member willing to card people.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates Fusion, and also considers LDS Xyz Summoning to be a sham. He sort of got over the former after Serena helped him, focusing his hatred on Academia rather than fusion users in general. Unfortunately, after Dennis's betrayal he becomes convinced that everyone who isn't from the Xyz dimension can't be trusted and that his only friends are his dead comrades, though thankfully Crow and the kids help him get over this.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Challenges Kaito, a fellow Resistance member to a Duel.
  • First Name Basis: Only the citizens from Heartland call him by his first name. The anime and promotional materials do not.
  • Foil: He's one to fellow Lancer, Serena. Kurosaki is a survivor from the Xyz dimension that has lost everything and in his attempt to get it back has done so very brutal things and has shown no remorse for it. While Serena was protected by the Academia in the Fusion dimension and threw away her home due to her moral code.
  • Freudian Excuse: Deconstructed, while why he's so aggressive and paranoid can be explained by what he lost, the show states that does in no way EXCUSE him. Yuya has stated while Yuto was as mad and hated the Academia, he was still much more reasonable and wanted a peaceful solution. Amanda, Tanner and Frank stated they also lost everything, but weren't nearly as destructive as Kurosaki is.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Attempts to do this on Kaito during their Duel.
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: Often engages in this when declaring attacks.
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his loss against Crow quite well, giving out a smile as Crow's attack finishes him off.
  • Had To Be Sharp: His explanation for his strength. This isn't limited to card-game skills.
  • Head Butting Heroes: Is a bit much, but he and Yuto argue about their methods.
  • The Heavy: He basically functions as the main antagonist of the first arc.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: Goes through this briefly when the Action Field chosen for his duel with Sora resembles his destroyed hometown, Heartland. Then the BSOD is replaced by rage and determination.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: He's Knight Templar in defeating his enemies and finding Ruri, but his actions are taking him further into the Moral Event Horizon.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Flashbacks show that he has worked with people he trusts, but he wasn't seen teaming up with anyone on-screen until much later. He didn't even team up with Yuto, one of the few people he trusts, instead following his own agenda and occasionally getting in touch with him while in the Standard dimension. This gets him in trouble, but even after supposedly learning his lesson he goes back to being a loner. He eventually grows out of it.
  • Irony: He hates LDS, yet is put among their numbers for the Maiami Championship. Also, see Not So Different. Later on in Episode 48, he's saved by Serena, an Academia Fusion user who looks like his sister.
  • I Work Alone:
    • He dislikes tag-team dueling, though he appreciates it when Serena, Tsukikage, Michio, Teppei, Sawatari, and Gongenzaka protect him from the Obelisk Force and make it possible for him to defeat them.
    • His attitude in the Synchro Dimension. He states he arrived alone and instead of attempting to find the rest of the Lancers, he just started looking for strong duelists instead. As a result of finding out about Dennis, he is even worse in this regard, declaring that everyone is his enemy and that his friends are only from the Xyz Dimension and are dead. Although after dueling Crow, Kurosaki finally mellows out of it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's generally rude and demeaning to everyone he encounters, but he makes it VERY clear that he cares deeply for his friends. Despite their differing opinions and his threat to defeat Yuto, Kurosaki still considers Yuto his best friend and was furious when he couldn't find him anywhere after his duel with Yuya and Sora. He was prepared to rough up Yuya for possibly doing something to Yuto and for having Yuto's trademark card, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, in his possession. Even though the manner in which he finished off Dennis was violent, Kurosaki voices aloud that he still cares about the state his home dimension was left in, still grieves that many of his other friends were sealed away into cards, and is furious at Academia for stealing away the future happiness of the two people most important to him: Yuto and his little sister Ruri.
  • Kick the Dog: Carding both Tio and Marco, who at least seemed like pretty nice guys, probably counts as this. Him carding of the three random LDS employees chasing Yuya believing him to be the one they're looking for. He later insults Marco in front of Masumi, calling him weak and pathetic. He then goes on to insult and demean Masumi and her other two friends Yaiba and Hokuto, noting that their efforts to defeat him lacked any sort of "iron and will", ignoring the fact that all three managed to wipe his field and hand clean of all monsters, Spells, and Traps, including reducing his Life Points to a mere 10.
  • Kick Them While They're Down: Kurosaki intended to seal away both Sora and Dennis after winning his matches against them but was stopped by Reiji's actions, either directly or indirectly. While he was willing to let Sora go, he had no problem potentially killing Dennis by beating his unconscious body instead.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: His intended carding of Sora and Dennis. Also how he likely views his Kick the Dog moments, particularly before he learns that LDS is a potential ally.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Like Yuto, his appearance has slowly darkened the series.
  • Knight Templar: Despite Yuto telling him LDS is not the enemy, he still attacks them, to the extent Yuto is forced to knock him out to get him away from Masumi, Yuzu, and Sora. It turns out that he attacked them because he wants to take Reiji hostage, because the Professor seems to be the one holding Ruri hostage.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: He's steals the souls of teachers and elite students, who may not be into the whole thing, and is willing to duel students just to bring out LDS' boss, Reiji, in order to duel some answers out of him.
  • La Résistance: Reveals he is part of one fighting Academia from the Fusion Dimension during his duel with Sora.
  • The Lancer: He becomes this to Yuya as part of the Lancers.
  • Large Ham: Normally he's rather subdued, but when he's dueling, Kurosaki chews scenery with the best of them (with both verbal and body language).
  • Last Name Basis: The anime, promotional materials and non-Heartland characters call him by his last name.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: His love for his sister Ruri makes him very erratic in his willingness to get her back.
  • Love Makes You Evil: To get Ruri back, he is willing to do a lot of dark things.
  • Magic Knight: A pretty good duelist in a world where duel monsters can be implemented with real magic, and eventually shown to be a skilled hand-to-hand fighter capable of taking down several enemies at once.
  • Meaningful Name: The kanji in his first name, 隼, can be read as "hayabusa," meaning "falcon," referring to his monsters. "Kurosaki" means "black flower." In the dub, Shay is Gaelic for "hawk", but it can also allude to Shays' Rebellion, a famous historical uprising.
  • Moral Myopia: States in Episode 34 that he'll do anything to protect his comrades... but when the LDS Trio went after him to do the same, he beat them down without even thinking about it.
  • Nineties Anti-Hero: Badass? Check. Physically kicks ass? Check. Completely willing to kill anyone if it's convenient? Check, just ask Professor Marco. I Work Alone? Check. While no guns are used, his ace monsters do tend to drop bombs or lasers on people. While he does have a handful of scenes where he feels grateful or glad to see a loved one kinda, sorta alive, most of the time he's either angry or indifferent. After his Character Development, he stops being one.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: A (arguably) benevolent version; given his background, he treats dueling like real combat and a battlefield, as opposed to more idealistic characters like Yuya, who treat dueling like fun.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Gives a speech to this effect after Sora takes his Raid Raptors - Blaze Falcon in Episode 34.

Kurosaki: "We, the Resistance, have always fought with the worst case scenario in mind. While keeping in mind the friends we lost who used to fight alongside us. But even if they're taken from us, we will never abandon them. I WILL take back my friends!"

  • Noble Bird Of Prey: His Raid Raptors are mechanical predatory birds and give off this vibe, especially his Xyz Monsters, with an example being Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon. They only get bigger and more badass from there.
  • Not So Different:
    • Hinted at by his duel with Sora when you consider that Kurosaki has hunted people in much the same way as the Fusion faction, Academia, albeit for a different reason, and he finishes the duel by bombing the virtual Heartland to the ground, which is exactly what the Academia did to the real one. This is further emphasized when Sora revealed that Academia would seal their victims' souls in cards. Furthermore, he is also able to card people like Academia.
    • He and Serena share a similar desire in working alone and believing that their strength and skills is enough to take on anyone.
    • Hilariously enough, he's this to LDS given that his attitude seems to come from when he was at a pro duelist school himself.
    • Befriends Crow once he realizes that this is their situation.
    • Kaito is exactly like Kurosaki, but more violent and angrier at Academia, if that's even possible.
  • Only Sane Man: Interestingly, once he returns home, he shifts from being a Combat Pragmatist Anti-Hero to being one of the most reasonable characters, up there with Gongenzaka. This is in stark contrast to pretty much everyone else around him, including Kaito, who is blinded by hatred, Sawatari, who's, well, Sawatari, and even Yuya, who now has Yuto's overwhelming hatred to contend with in the face of Academia's soldiers.

Over-the-Shoulder Carry: Is subject to this after being rendered unconscious by Yuto in Episode 21.

  • Perpetual Frowner: He's almost always seen with a scowl on his face, as seen in the image above.
  • Perspective Reversal: Everyone spent all of the first two seasons trying to get Kurosaki to be a team player and Lancers comrade. He tries to do the same thing for Kaito.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • A justified example. He shows sympathy and outright concern for Yuzu in Episode 77 after Sergey threw her and her bike off the road and into the side of a building. This is partially due to Yuzu looking exactly like his little sister, Ruri, but may also be the fact that even someone as stoic and battle-hardened as Kurosaki can be horrified by such violent events.
    • Later saves Tanner from falling off Crow's monster.
    • In Episode 95, he bails out the rest of the Lancers, Tokumatsu, Sam, and Crow's kids from the City's riot before giving Yuya a ride back to the Duel Palace so the latter can face Jack one more time.
    • Outright states that Yuya is his companion, saying that he trusts him, in order to get Kaito to lay off Yuya.
  • The Power of Friendship: Tries to invoke this to overcome Kaito's hatred in their duel. Kurosaki puts up a valiant effort, and it partially works four episodes later.
  • The Power of Hate: He really doesn't like Academia and considering their tendency to intentionally press his Berserk Button, he's got a lot of hate to spread around.
  • Properly Paranoid: Played With, after his duel with Dennis he is sure that there is another Academia spy in the Synchro Dimension. He's not wrong, but the problem is he has no idea who it is and as such is planning on attacking everyone to makes sure.

Drops this after his second duel with Dennis, becoming too paranoid and convinced that everyone is an enemy. Picks it up again after dueling Crow and losing a little paranoia.

  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He repeatedly states that the LDS duelists he has dueled lack steeled resolve.
  • Remember That You Trust Me: Played with, see Aesop Amnesia above. He does continue to show signs of friendship with Crow and be largely hostile to everyone else, but not without reason, and slowly warms up to the others as the series goes on in small, subtle ways. It's implied that his duel with Crow helped remind him of what's really important. By Xyz arc he moves out of this.
  • Revenge: He's not so much interested in fighting the bad guys to stop their evil plans as he is out to take revenge for his destroyed home and fallen comrades.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: He definitely shows signs of this in Episode 33 when Heartland is used as the field for his duel against Sora.

Taken even further in the next episode, where he is clearly reminded of his conflict with Academia. Again in episode 74, he has a brief flashback after seeing Dennis' Antique Gear Chaos Giant and the destruction those behemoths inflicted on his city.

  • Spell My Name with an "S": An official website spells his rarely used first name as "Syun", which is a common spelling for the "Shu" syllable in spelled out names by the Japanese.
  • Taught by Experience: He says the reason for his strength is this.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Kurosaki does not work well with others, including his own best friend Yuto, and prefers to do everything alone. This is called out by Serena and Gongenzaka, since as skilled as he is, even he can't defeat everyone from Academia and needs all the help he can get. The most volatile partnership he has is with Reiji, since he gets pissed every time Reiji tells him to exercise caution or prevents him from following through on certain actions.
    • Once in the Synchro Dimension, he doesn't even bother looking for the other Lancers and just goes about doing what he feels like. Gongenzaka chews him out for this, but it doesn't seem to stick.

He finally drops his attitude after losing to Crow and is completely fine to help his new comrades, including Crow.

  • Took a Level In Kindness: Thanks to Crow, by the Heartland Arc, he had become a lot nicer, trying to get Kaito to come back and stop carding people, showing trust in the Lancers and Yuya, and generally a lot more pleasant to be around.
  • Tranquil Fury: Looked shaken after seeing Heartland, but then spent the entire duel calm and composed while he kicked Sora's ass.
  • True Companions: Despite his Nominal Hero-like willingness to go through everything in his way to accomplish his goals, it's been consistently shown that Kurosaki places great faith in his allies and those that he has bonded with. Part of his Character Development involves him opening up to the other Lancers and trusting them as much as they trust him. He goes through a brief episode (or few) of shunning them after Dennis is revealed to the cast as an Academia spy, but dueling Crow helps him get back on track. By the Xyz Dimension arc, he firmly believes that his remaining Lancer party is this, and he's willing to defend them and his belief in them.
  • Underestimating Badassery: While he still takes the duel seriously, Kurosaki clearly doesn't think much of Sora during their rematch, having defeated him before. He ends up losing when Sora summons a Death-toy monster he hadn't expected, mirroring their first battle.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Upon learning that Dennis was not only from Academia but the catalyst to starting the invasion on his home dimension, as well as setting Yuri on his sister Ruri and getting her captured, Kurosaki becomes hell bent on destroying the man.
  • Violence Is the Only Option: When breaking out of prison, Kurosaki doesn't have a Duel Disk on him, so he resorts to physically beating the crap out of the guards until he can find a Duel Disk to arm himself with.
    • Also in episode 75, after finding out that Reiji deactivated the carding mechanism on his Duel Disk, he apparently decides to just beat Dennis to death, but is stopped by the tournament guards.

Beats up an entire squad of guards in the underground, in what's probably the most badass display of physical violence in Yugioh history.

  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Continues to card innocent people even after Yuto explains that LDS isn't their enemy, but only so that he can lure out Reiji and take him hostage. Showing no remorse for this puts him at a darker morality, but consider how many lives might have been saved if his plan worked.
  • When He Smiles: Kurosaki doesn't smile much, but he gets a few such as when he returns Crow's fist-bump, affirming him as a comrade. Later in flashbacks of the Xyz Dimension saga, Kurosaki was seen smiling along with Yuto and Ruri when observing Kaito dueling.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He has no problem violently shoving Yuzu out of the way and knocking her down, and then was poised to seal Masumi within a card, had the duel not been interrupted before it could start. Later he almost does it again after he formally defeats her, along with Hokuto and Yaiba, but is interrupted again by the reinforcements of LDS.
  • Would Hurt a Child: So long as that child is an enemy, as in the case of Sora and Academia's Child Soldiers, he holds no reservations about going all out, showing when he had Revolution Falcon bring down a tower on top of Sora. He was then poised to seal Sora away in a card, in front of a crowd no less but was told by Reiji not to make a scene at the last minute via radio.

You Gotta Have Blue Hair: He has two different shades of teal.

  • Your Soul Is Mine: He sealed the souls of five LDS employees into cards with his Duel Disk. Attempted to do this to Sora and Dennis but was prevented by Reiji.

Dueling Schools

Yushow Duel School

Shuzou Hiragi

Yuzus father and the owner of Yushow duel school He runs a Guts Master deck, which relies on swarm tactics and Special Summoning, simi

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Embarrasses Yuzu before her duel with Masumi, by picking a field to highlight her 'cuteness.'
  • Bumbling Dad: Due to his Hot-Blooded nature.
  • Badass Teacher: As the principal of You Show duel school.
  • Catch Phrase: "Burning" and "hot-blooded."
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's actually a skilled duelist, capable of executing a combo to snatch Yuya's Pendulum monsters from his hand, and then play them himself. He established a field that could have granted him victory, but since his combo involved skipping his battle phase, Yuya managed to secure victory on the next turn.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Challenges Yuya to set the precedence for Pendulum summoning, just like his father did for Action Dueling.

Didn't Think This Through: Picks a star-based field for Yuya's duel with Hokuto... despite the meaning of Hokuto's name (the constellation Big Dipper, or the North Star).

  • Doting Parent: He cares very much for his daughter.
  • Eccentric Mentor: He's pretty odd, though well-meaning.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Yoko's fangirling is too much for even him.
  • Expy: His character has some parallels with Might Guy.
  • Fiery Redhead: His hair color fits his Hot-Blooded personality.
  • Good Parents: He is arguably the best parent in the series. Having the most screen time out of all the parents, worrying about Yuzu's odd behavior after meeting Yuto and happily cheering for her. Episode 53 shows he took Yuzu everywhere and would even stop in the middle of a pro duel to change her diapers
  • Hot-Blooded: Yuya looked subdued by comparision. Shuzou even screams the term. His deck even has this theme, the Guts Master monsters. Shuzou is so hot-blooded that his name is even written with burning letters on the Versus Character Splash, a characteristic that everybody else lacks.
  • Heel: He insulting Yuya while in their duel, just when Yuya feels very depressed, it's enough for Yuzu and the children to boo him all the time.
  • Large Ham: When you can make Yuya look quiet, you're definitely this. And then there's his "manly fainting noises". note
  • Lovable Jock: All his Guts Masters also have a sports theme to them. He himself appears to be wearing a track suit. And he is a kind teacher and loving father.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Parodied in episode 14. Shuzou challenges Yuya to a duel in order to get him out of his blue and inspire him to become a better duelist; after a good lecture about how his fears have leave him paralyzed in one place, Yuya manages to pull himself together and win with a One-Turn Killer combo. As Action Duels actually hurt you, Shuzo gets knocked out and Yuya screams his name while cradling him in his arms and a very Kung Fu movie ending scene plays out... until Yuzu smack her dad's face with her paper fan to wake him up.
  • Nice Hat: The flashback in episode 53 showed he had a hat just like Yusho when he was still a pro duelist.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Refused to have Yuya duel Strong Ishijima...until he is offered a new Solid Vision dueling system in exchange.
  • Overprotective Dad: He gets furious when Dennis offers Yuzu a rose or when he does a Bridal Carry.
  • Personality Powers: The Hot-Blooded coach that values team work has a deck of FIRE-attribute monsters, based in different kind of sports and that have effects that increases the number of monsters at his side and protects them of being destroyed.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives a critical one to Yuya for being a pessimist, not being able to accept another Pendulum summoner, and for not coming close to his father's skills. He continues to mock him through their duel, provoking him to be better.
  • Secret Test of Character: Delivers one to Yuya in Episode 14, to get him out of his Heroic B.S.O.D..
  • Shipper on Deck: One could see Shuzou as this for YuyaXYuzu. The two have had multiple bonding moments throughout the series, and every time Shuzou was there, he didn't bat an eye, yet when Dennis hit on her in Ep. 44, Shuzou was furious.
  • Zerg Rush: None of the Guts Master monsters (as of Episode 14) have attacks over 1800, but their effects can summon a lot at once, to overwhelm an opponent. Though they have effects to protect each other from destruction in battle, and destroy the opponent's attacking monster.

Tatsuya (Tate),Ayu (Ally) and Futoshi (Frederick)

Voiced by: Nanami Niide (Tatsuya),Kyouko Chikiri (Futoshi)and Satomi Akesaka (Ayu) (JP), Alyson Leigh Rosenfeled (Ayu)(EN)

The three children that go to You Show Duel School. At the beginning of the series, Ayu and Futoshi are already students of You Show Duel School. In the end of the second episode, Tatsuya joins the school as well, even after Yuya is accused for a cheater. The three of them accompany Yuya and Yuzu wherever they go and cheer them on. They're the representatives for You Show Duel School in the Junion division of the Maiami City Championship. Tatsuya uses an Entermachine Deck; Ayu uses an Aqua Actress Deck; Futoshi uses a Sketch Deck.

  • Badass Adorable: Surprisingly, they're all quite talented duelists in their own right (if not on the same level as people like Yuya or Reiji). On top of being kids.
    • All three of them lose to Reira, though, albeit not without a fight.
  • Berserk Button: Making fun of their onii and onee-chans. They were absolutely livid at Sora for making fun of Yuzu and Gongenzaka.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Ayu, according to Futoshi.
  • Big Brother Worship: The three admire Yuya and Yuzu and add "-onii-chan" and "-onee-chan" on their names.
  • The Big Guy: Among the three, it's Futoshi.
  • Broken Pedestal: Futoshi has this bad for Sora in episode 52.
  • The Chick: Among the three, it's Ayu.
  • Catch Phrase: Futoshi and his "shivers."
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Futoshi. No, really.
  • Dub Name Change: Ayu becomes Ally in the English dub. Tatsuya and Futoshi become Tate and Frederick, respectively in the German Dub.
  • Fat Idiot: Futoshi is not the brightest bulb, requiring more explanation during duels than the other two. Despite this, he can Duel, managing to beat his opponent in Episode 27 with a pretty good combo.
  • Freudian Trio: Ayu is the Ego, Futoshi is the Id, and Tatsuya is the Superego.
  • Good with Numbers: Tatsuya could math Yuya's winning rate percent pretty quickly.
  • Graceful Loser: Tatsuya, after he loses to Reira.
  • Nice Guy:All three appears to be very friendly
  • The Smart Guy: Among the three, it's Tatsuya.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Tatsuya and Futoshi are the boys, and Ayu is the girl. Platonic, by the way.

  • Cool Shades: He always wears glasses that cover his eyes, even from the sides similar to Neo.
  • Expy: Serves a role similar to Saruwatari/Kemo and Mr. Crocketts/Croquet or Isono/Roland in Duel Monsters.
  • Multicolored Hair: Has silver-white bangs and Darker hair in back.
  • Number Two: Seems to serve as one for the Akabas' though his exact position is ambiguous.
  • Only Sane Employee: Verges into this at some points.
  • Pet the Dog: Deeply concerned about letting the LDS trio draw out Kurosaki, since they are just children.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He always wears a smoking suit.


Himika Akaba (Henrietta Akaba)

Reijis mother and the chairwomen of Leo Corporation

  • Ambiguously Evil: She's a bit corrupt, but neither her or Reiji seem to be outright evil, not to mention her humanizing features such as caring for those that work under her. Then it's revealed that they're planning to defend against an invasion from Leo Akaba, so her actions seem more justified considering the circumstances. And then we find out the reason why Reira is so messed up, putting her back to this
  • Benevolent Boss: Though ruthless to other duel schools, she's shown to care about her employees.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Though she and her son ultimately have good intentions, they are still the conflict creators in the earlier arcs before Acadamia rears its head.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: She's ruthless to other duel schools, but actually subverted, in that she is aware of Reiji's plan and actively supports him in it.
  • Education Mama: A dueling example towards Reira. She wants to make another prodigy out of him, like Reiji, but it's implied that all she got was traumatizing him until the point he's afraid of her and pushes himself to win in order to not enrage her. Eventually it's revealed that Reira isn't really her son, but an orphan that was rescued from a war-torn nation. He threw away his sense of self as a defense mechanism and can only emulate others, so if anything she's just trying to make him into another Reiji.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She cares for her sons, and she cares for Marco and Tio, and wants to see their souls freed. Subverted for Reira; he was only ever a puppet to her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She is appalled by the possibility that someone is taking and sealing away the souls of duelists.
  • Jerkass: She almost explicitly admits that she wants to punish Yuya for embarrassing LDS.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Maybe more of a bronze or silver one, but she does care for her sons and employees. Or at least she cares about ONE of her sons...
  • Knight Templar: She'll do whatever she thinks it'll take to help her son Reiji defeat her husband. Including grooming Reira to be her puppet against him.
  • Out of Focus: She has the least screen time and storyline out of the four Akaba and the recurring LDS characters, despite being the company money manager, Reiji and Reira's mother, and the (ex-)wife of the Big Bad of the show Leo.
  • Morality Pet: Is on good terms with Reiji, though they interact formally, and also cares about Marco.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Her is the heart suit. Shown by her hair resembling a heart.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Shockingly she's this. After Yuya and Reiji's second duel, she cancels the MCS and reveals to the interdimensional war to the world. She and Reiji further announce that the Leo Duel Schools have been re-christened "Lance Defense Soldiers," and their dueling curriculums worldwide will be made open to the public to train them to defend themselves should Academia attack again.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Or at least a very morally ambiguous one, but adopting Reira to be a soldier against Academia, puts her into this.
  • Xanatos Gambit: In her first appearance, she uses Sawatari's loss to her advantage. She quickly sets up a school match between her school and You Show, with the bet that if her group wins, You Show will be taken over by LDS, and if You Show wins, they'll drop the charges of Yuya attacking Sawatari. This allowed her to repair her school's reputation, gain further control of the Dueling world, and gain control of the Pendulum Summoning method while also studying Yuya to boot. And if they lose, they really don't lose anything, to say nothing of the fact that because it's three one on one matches, even if Yuya wins, he can't turn the tables for his fellow Duelists, especially as LDS has a monopoly on all advanced Summoning methods.

Hokuto Shijima (Dipper O'Rion)

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (JP), Daniel J Edwards (EN)

kuto Shijima is is the representative for the Leo Duel School Xyz Summon course. He runs a Constellar Deck. Despite being a very arrogant jerkass, he respects Xyz Summoning and was shown to be not amused after learning the fact that the one who attacked LDS uses Xyz Monsters. Episode 24 also shown him to have extremely strong bond with his fellow summon representatives from LDS.

  • And I Must Scream: He is defeated by Serena and sealed in a card.
  • Badass: He is the only member of the trio to make it into the second round of the tournament. However, he doesn't arrive to his second match due to being sealed in a card by Serena.
  • Berserk Button: Hurting his friends seems to be his button. He looks incredibly angry when Yaiba was horribly beaten by Kachidoki.
  • Combat Pragmatist: During his duel with Yuya he went out of his way to time his attacks so as to disrupt Yuya's attempts to grab Action Cards.
  • Corner of Woe: He ends up in it twice during the LDS vs. You Show duels.
  • Demoted to Extra: Granted he was sealed in a card, making it less frustrating than his friends, but after his role in Season 1, he became this in Season 2.
  • Dub Name Change: His name is changed to Dipper for the English dub.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Being reminded of his failure by Masumi is enough to send him to his Corner of Woe.
  • Insufferable Genius: He is one of the favorites to win the Championship and the ace of the Xyz course, but he is overall arrogant and cruel.
  • Japanese Pronouns: He uses the masculine pronoune boku, which is less informal than ore.
  • Jerkass: Not quite on Sawatari's level, but he deliberately times his attacks to harm Yuya and to prevent him from getting Action Cards. Also, he and Yaiba badmouth Yuya's father until Reiji yells at them to shut up.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Maybe not quite gold, but he is concerned about Professor Marco and seems to be friends with Masumi and Yaiba as well.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Reiji alters his memories of Kurosaki so that he doesn't draw suspicion during the tournament.
  • Light Is Not Good: Constellars are LIGHT monsters, and while not evil, he is a jerk.
  • Meaningful Name: "Hokuto" is the Japanese name of the Big Dipper constellation, so he naturally runs Constellars. When a space-themed field is picked for his Duel with Yuya, he comments that it's the perfect field for him. Cue Shuzou freaking out as he realizes that this is right, and Sora commenting that Hokuto's name should have given it away.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: He flips when Yuya makes him lose 500 Life Points.
  • Pet the Dog: He complimented Yaiba's X-Saber deck, though Masumi asks if that's just due to his loss. And another one, when he is concerned over Professor Marco's disappearance.
  • Plot Armor: Conveniently saved from having his and the others' souls stolen by Kurosaki thanks to LDS staff and Reiji showing up. And then he is sealed into a card by Serera.
  • Put on a Bus: Time will tell if he ever gets released from the card Serena sealed him into. However, the fact he is show when Reiji mentions making new Lancers out of Yuya's generation suggests he may be released.
  • Never Live It Down: In-Universe. His loss to Yuya. He takes it badly whenever anyone, especially Masumi, brings it up.
  • Sanity Slippage: He freaks when Yuya damages his Life Points, and tries to hit him with a meteor shower from Constellar Tempest.

Serious Business: Doesn't like hearing that Xyz summons are being abused, such as the case with the perpetrator.

Masumi Kotsu (Julia Krystal)

Voiced by: Arisa Kiyoto (JP), Kate Bristol (EN)

Masumi Kotsu is the representative for the Leo Duel School Fusion Summon course. She runs a Gem-Knight deck. She was shown to have learned Fusion Summon (and possibly dueling in general) from the LDS professor Marco and has grown attached to him ever since. Episode 24 also shown her to have extremely strong bond with her fellow summon representatives from LDS.

  • Action Girl: The only female LDS duelist introduced so far.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Looks vaguely Egyptian.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: After having her memories wiped, she regards Kurosaki as just another duelist, when before she was terrified of and hated him.
  • Ascended Extra: Of the three LDS representative students, Masumi is shown the most, due to her being more proactive in trying to find Professor Marco's aggressor. She is also roped into Yuto's business, since she, along with Yuzu and Sora, keep witnessing his disappearance act with Yuzu's bracelet.
  • Badass: Is the only one of the LDS duelists to win their duel, and beats Yuzu in only two turns, the first of which she couldn't attack on.

Berserk Button: Yuto became one for her when she believed he kidnapped Professor Marco. Later on, her hatred passed to the real agressor, Shun Kurosaki. Related is insulting Fusion Summoning, because Professor Marco taught it to her.

  • Berserker Tears: She has them when she remembers Marco and how he might be missing when talking to Yuzu and Sora.
  • Brutal Honesty: To her allies and enemies, Hokuto is the most frequent target.
  • The Comically Serious: Most of the time, due to her Brutal Honesty, and her reactions to Hokuto going to the Corner of Woe.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Snarks about Hokuto's loss when the moment calls for it, all while keeping the same expression.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: With Yuzu after their second duel.
  • Demoted to Extra: Despite being an Ascended Extra in Season 1, after her second duel with Yuzu, she has faded away entirely. She doesn't appear in the third opening or become a Lancer, despite Foreshadowing that she and her friends would be at least somewhat relevant. Though she reappears in Episode 52, giving foreshadowing that she'll join the Lancers, at least for the Standard Dimension Division.

  • Graceful Loser: After losing to Yuzu, Masumi recognizes her as a Worthy Opponent and gives her her 'Crystal Rose' monster.

  • Not So Stoic: She's normally calm, but the incident with Kurosaki has her freaking out and a lot less composed, visibly showing fear.

She also screams like a girl at expected moments, like when the destruction of a monster knocks her over, or she is knocked off the bridge.

  • The Ojou: Implied. Her father owns a jewelry store, she goes to a prestigious (and maybe expensive) Dueling school and her Gem-Knight Deck gives her an air of nobility.

Yaiba Todo (Kit Blade)

Yaiba Todo is the representative of Leo Duel School Synchro Summon course. He runs an X-Saber Deck. He is the one who taught Synchro Summon to Gongenzaka. Episode 24 also shown him to have extremely strong bond with his fellow summon representatives from LDS.

  • Anime Hair: Is spiky and long, though the color is realistic.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: The Kid Samurai uses X-Sabers.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: Fitting to his Kid Samurai appearance.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: The end of his eyesbrows are very thick.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has a fang sticking out of his mouth.
  • Demoted to Extra: He appears a lot in the Qualifying Mini-Arc, teaches Gongenzaka how to Synchro Summon, but then in Season 2, he loses to Kachidoki and off screen for a while. He reappears in Episode 52, giving foreshadowing that he'll join the Lancers, at least for the Standard Dimension Division.
  • Japanese Pronouns: He uses the informal pronoun ore, but switches to boku when he is talking to a person in authority.
  • Jerkass: Less so than Hokuto, but still rude to Gongenzaka and mocks Yuya's father.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He was worried about Professor Marco, and ended up helping Masumi try to find him. Shown again in episode 23, when he agrees to train Gongenzaka in Synchro Summoning. He even supports and cheers on Gongenzaka in his first duel in the tournament.

  • Meaningful Name: "Todo" means "sword". Also, "Yaiba" means "blade" or "edge (of a knife)". He plays X-Sabers. Shuzou picked the "Sword's Graveyard" field because of it.
  • The Mentor: To Gongenzaka, surprisingly enough, in terms of Synchro Summon.
  • Messy Hair: Fitting to the modern Samurai character stereotype.
  • Oh Crap!: Looks about ready to soil himself when Gongenzaka first shows up to request assistance from him, seeing as Gongenzaka looked ready to commit grievous bodily harm. After it became a Flat "What.".
  • Pet the Dog: Worried about Professor Marco when he went missing. And he later agrees to Gongenzaka's request to teach him Synchro Summoning.
  • Pride: Largely due to the remarks that he's getting from his friends, he's not happy when Gongenzaka doesn't initially do well with his Synchro Summoning.
  • Plot Armor: Conveniently saved from having his and the others' souls stolen by Kurosaki thanks to LDS staff and Reiji showing up.

Sakaki Family

Yusho Sakaki

Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi

He is Yuya's father, Yoko Sakaki's husband, an Entertainment Duelist and the founder of the You Show Duel School. He was the Action Duel Champion until three years ago, he suddenly disappeared. He uses an Entermate deck like his son.

  • The Ace: People who really respect him praise Yusho for his performances and skills. Reiji even describes him as a pioneer of Action Duels. Also, in the first episode, Strong Ishijima believes that he can only become the true champion after defeating Yusho. Reiji originally intend Yusho to be the leader of the Lancers.
  • All There in the Manual: Model sheets give us the name of his ace monster, Sky Magician.
  • Be Yourself: He told a young Yuya, he wanted Yuya to be himself.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He arrived just in time to save a shocked Asuka from the Juvenile Officers in episode 106's flashback. And considering the Xyz Dimension Duel Disk he was wearing and how bruised he looked when he saved her, it was probably mere coincidence that he arrived in the nick of time and in the right place.
  • Big Good: Played With in a different way from Reiji. He arrived in Heartland before Academia invaded it and taught the young people dueling skills that have helped them, but he also left one day. But he's currently in the Fusion Dimension working against Academia.
  • Broken Pedestal: He was the Champion and went missing three years prior to the series' start on the night of the Championship match, and is now thought of as a coward. He's this to the Xyz Dimension as well. Acting as their teacher before Academia attacked, but disappeared mysteriously one day, courtesy by Edo. They call him a coward as well.
  • Catch Phrase: Yuya's "The fun's just getting started!" was originally Yusho's.
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Yusho has been missing for three years but he's mentioned enough times to know that he'll show up eventually. Also, his disappearance is strongly suggested to be due to a kidnapping. He's actually been dimension hopping since his "disappearance". His disappearance from Standard lead him to the Xyz Dimension, where he taught Heartland how to duel, then he wound up in the Fusion Dimension, where he created a second You Show Duel School hidden away somewhere in the city.
  • Dented Iron: His duel against Edo has taken its toll on him. His leg is injured and he can barely walk as a result
  • Dirty Coward: He's considered one by the citizens of Standard for vanishing before a Championship match, and by the Xyz Dimension for doing the same right before Academia attacked. In the latter case, he implies that Edo Phoenix was somehow responsible for stranding him in the Fusion Dimension.
  • Disappeared Dad: He's been missing for three years. This is because he's been travelling across dimensions.
  • Expy: He's pretty much Kazuma Tsukumo with a new profession. They even look alike to the point that they may canonically be alternate world versions of each other.
  • Good Parents: Flashbacks indicate he was a good father to his son.
  • Hidden Depths: Himika and Reiji suspect that his disappearance might have to do with their enemies. At the very least he's been to the Xyz Dimension and is currently in the Fusion Dimension opposing Academia.
  • In the Blood: Yuya's ideals of entertaining the audience and his opponents and that duels should never be used as a tool for conflict all come from Yusho.
  • Large Ham: The flashback in Episode 52 pretty much cements him as one.

Multicolored Hair: He has black and grey hair.

  • Nice Guy: Each flashback has shown him to be a kind and loving father.
  • Nice Hat: His Ringmaster's top hat.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He always has a warm smile on each time we see him. But he is shown to have a serious side.
  • Punny Name: Yusho sounds a lot like You Show, his own Dueling school's name and hints at his flashy Entertainment Dueling style.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": His names is romanized as "Yusyo" in the anime.
  • Spirited Competitor: He was really happy when his acrobatic style was catching on and decided to polish his abilities in order to become an example to newest generations.
  • Stage Magician: Both he and his Sky Magician give off this vibe.
  • “Stop Having Fun” Guys: Like his son, he's an invoked inversion. He butted in Yoko's duel in her flashback in episode 52 cause they were using dueling to settle fights. He swiftly saved Yoko's friend so she could duel for fun.
  • Technical Pacifist: Like Yuya, his go to method to stop conflict is to talk things out but if he's forced to he'll resort to violence.
  • Worthy Opponent: To Strong Ishijima, who even hoped to lure Yusho out by challenging Yuya.

Yoko Sakaki

Yuya's mother and Yusho's wife, she raises Yuya on her own. According to Yuya, she takes in stray animals.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Which is pretty impressive considering how over the top Yuya is.
  • Amazon Brigade: Her monsters are only female bikers. And her old gang was made up of only girls.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: She asks one to Yuya in episode 52, where he says he'll defeat every enemy, she asks if that includes Sora.
  • Badass Longcoat: She used to wear one when she was a gang leader. She wore it again in episode 52.
  • Biker Babe: As revealed by Episode 52. Turns our her deck's theme is this as well.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: In Episode 44 she hilariously borrows both Shuzou's and Futoshi's catchphrases.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She's absolutely helpless against cute things, either stray animals or cute children wandering her house (i.e Sora). By Episode 16, she had collected four more pets.
  • Expy: Kind-hearted mother of the main character that turned out to have been a former motorcycle riding delinquent that grew kinder after meeting her future husband. Yoko obviously takes cues from Kyoko Honda
  • Fangirl: She's a Michio fangirl, to the point of being caught in between cheering for Michi or for her own son. And now she has become a Dennis fangirl too. She also appreciates Halil's "ethnic appeal."
  • Friend to All Living Things: She takes in stray animals.
  • Good Parents: The fact that she is a Recurring Character makes her one in comparison to other YGO protagonists' parents. She often appears when Yuya has his inner conflicts and provides encouraging and wise advice. Also, during the duel against Michio, she throws a prepared lunch at Yuya, who is starving at this point, giving her son enough energy to win the duel. And she has complete faith that Yuya will surpass Yusho. She was able to instantly know something was wrong with Yuya the moment she heard about the inter-dimensional war and quickly challenged him to a duel to teach him what he needed to know.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's one of the nicest characters in the series.
  • Hidden Depths: Episode 14 hints there's more of Mrs. Sakaki than she shows.
    • Yoko: It's OK now. It's not my turn to chime in yet.
    • In Episode 52, she challenges Yuya to a duel and used to be a gang leader.
  • In the Blood: Yoko states that Yuya's straight forward and honest nature is just like her.
  • Meet Cute: Episode 52 shows how she met Yusho, her future husband.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not her but her monsters are attractive women in form fitting leather outfits.
  • Mum Looks Like A Sister: Played With. Sora pretends to confuse her for Yuya's older sister to get in her good graces (she does look fine, though).
  • Retired Badass: She used to be a gang leader, and an exceptional duelist, but now she's just a house wife.
  • Running Gag: In the Battle Royale arc, whenever she's talked to, she'll speak very low and serious to then start fangirling over Michio or Dennis while asking to see more of them.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's good friends with Yuzu to the point she comforted her when Yuzu blamed herself for Yuya ending up near comatose after his encounter with Yuto and Yugo. In the same episode this is played for laughs as they both work together to get Mieru to compete in the tournament again and get her out of the room while Yuya is resting.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She states in Episode 52, it was Yusho's ability to solve conflict without harming anyone that made her fall for him.
  • Sobriquet: Shooting Star Yoko
  • Took a Level In Kindness: In the past, she was a gang leader that happily defeated anyone in her way. But meeting Yusho calmed her down to the kind woman we see today.
  • Warrior Therapist: We can see where Yuya gets it from as in episode 52, she seems to play this part to get Yuya out of his BSOD.

XYZ Dimension

Yuto

A mysterious Young man who likes like Yuya and is investigating LDS to rescue his friend Ruri.When he notices Yuzu he thought that she was her and began to mistook her for her when they first met.He is later reveled to be the xyz dimensional counterpart to Yuya and the member of the Resistance which is a rebel group that fends of Academia soldiers.He used to leave in an alternate universe version of Heartland city in which it was a peaceful city until it was destryoed by academia.After his duel with Yugo he was then absorb by Yuya and entrust him his ace Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon Yuto uses a Phantom Knights deck that focuses on summoning Xyz Monsters, including his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, and makes use of Spell Cards that can be activated from the graveyard.

  • Alleged Lookalikes: They're not completely different, but he's different enough to Yuya that it's a bit of a head scratcher as to why Yuzu can't make herself believe they're really not the same person. That being said, he's the most alike out of Yuya's counterparts in terms of hairstyle, which probably wouldn't be too difficult for Yuya to pull off.
  • Always Save the Girl: Yuto has shown a strong dedication to saving Ruri, when he thought Yuzu was Ruri he would follow her around just to protect her even asking especially about her when he and Sora first met.
  • Badass:
    • Curb-stomps Sawatari in their duel. Using just his initial hand. Yuto didn't use the card he drew from his deck on his second turn.
    • He is able to go ninja just like Sora, and can block a D-Wheel attacking him.
    • Speaking of Sora, it's pretty explicitly shown that had he not been merciful, he would have curb-stomped him.
    • Takes over Yuya's body during the duel with Edo Phoenix and summons a stronger version of his ace dragon, Dark Requiem Xyz Dragon.
  • Badass Cape: Combined with Scarf of Asskicking during his first couple of appearances.
  • Badass Longcoat: His trademark outfit and it has short sleeves.
  • Bequeathed Power: Sort of. By giving Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, he also gives him his soul, his Superpowered Evil Side, and his ability to Xyz summon.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Saying you'll hurt his friends, and Sora hits it deliberately to get him to duel him.
    • Being reminded of his homeland's destruction is a major button. Each time he was reminded, he awoke while he was inside Yuya.
  • Big Damn Heroes: First he saved Yuzu from dueling Sawatari, and intervened to prevent Kurosaki from dueling Masumi.
  • Black Knight: Sawatari nicknames him "Knight-kun" when Yuto tries to protect Yuzu, and he seems to have a knight motif. His Spell Card monsters are black horse-riding knights, and Yuto's is a more noble person than his partner Kurosaki, but Yuto still supports him. His deck is later revealed to be a Phantom Knights deck, monsters covered in black clothes and/or armor.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: The phrase "bringing smiles to others through Dueling" was a philosophy that Yuya at first thought was something Yuto learned from his father when he was in the Xyz Dimension. It turns out that Yuto really borrowed this from Ruri, as a way to honor her wishes.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns to being a major character in the Xyz Dimension arc after the Synchro Dimension arc demoted him to extra. The fifth opening makes note of this with by emphasizing Yuto's overbearing presence.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was once a resident of Heartland, a sprawling city from the Xyz Dimension that was a once-fun and peaceful realm until it was brought to ruin by the efforts of the Fusion Dimension.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Unlike his friend Kurosaki, Yuto doesn't assault people and he prefers to end conflicts peacefully if possible.
  • Determinator: He makes a comment in Episode 35 that echoes Kurosaki's words of getting up and fighting despite being knocked down.
  • Evil Counterpart: Subverted. At his first appearance he looked like one, but as the series went on he was quickly revealed to be very noble.
  • Expy: For Atem. Both have a traumatic past, were first introduced as enigmatic individuals but gradually got warmer, and they both look like the main hero (Yugi and Yuya). It's even more obvious come Season 3, when Yuto's spirit within Yuya becomes more active and he acts as his Spirit Advisor, just like Atem did to Yugi. He's also able to take over Yuya's body and duel through him, and is becoming much more aggressive after seeing his home in ruins again, very similar to Atem's attitudes in the early anime and manga before he mellowed out.
  • Famous Last Words: While not "dead", per se, his final line before merging with Yuya was "Bring smiles with your Duels". This subsequently became Yuya's personal Arc Words for the duration of the current Tournament Arc, and was referred back to with enough repetition that both the line, and by extension "egao"note , underwent Memetic Mutation among the fandom.
  • Flip Personality: In the Xyz Dimension arc, it's revealed that if he wills it, Yuto can gain temporary control over Yuya's body while still remaining sane, marked by Yuya's eyes changing to a pale gray color. In Episode 104, where this ability is first demonstrated, he and Yuya go back and forth quite a bit while fighting Edo, a high-ranking Academia soldier.
  • Foil: To Yuya, even down to their color palettes. While Yuya loves to entertain people and he's all smiles, Yuto never fools around and he's all serious. But both care for Yuzu. It's later shown that they are Not So Different, as Yuya believes that duels are meant to bring people their smiles, and Yuto agrees with him in his depth of his heart and he doesn't want to hurt people anymore with dueling.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is one to Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Having their summoning method as the third word in their name, the same attack and defense points. But having mirrored poses, Dark Rebellion's card background is a dark starry sky while Odd-Eyes' is a bright starry sky.

  • Go Out with a Smile: He smiles as his body fades away, although his soul remains with Yuya.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Wore goggles with his facemask during his first appearance. Subverted, as they did protect his eyes from flying debris when he shielded Yuzu, but the lens broke. He abandons the goggles by the time of his next appearance.
  • I Am Legion: Whenever Yuto summons his ace dragon and/or is possessed by his Superpowered Evil Side, he and any of his counterparts nearby also undergo Synchronization. The result is that both Yuto and his "twin" start speaking in unison and exude some sort of sinister dark power. This comes to a near breaking point in Episode 92, where Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri have all of their signature dragons on the field and all are screaming "WE WILL BECOME ONE!!!"
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: Gives Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, which is somehow plot-related, to Yuya before vanishing. It's unclear just how permanent his "death" is at the moment.
  • Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: His Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is his ace, despite not fitting with his Phantom Knight deck.
  • Irony: Yuto comes from a world inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, often considered to be one of the more lighthearted and goofiest series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but he is easily the most serious and angsty of the Yuyas.
  • It's All My Fault: Yuto regrets going to Standard when he finds out that during his absence, the Academia nearly wiped out his home, blaming himself for not being there to save everyone.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His actions kicked off a best-of-three competition between LDS and You Show, with the latter at risk of being overtaken. He also hinted the existence of a Greater Scope Villain, Academia.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Yuto insists Yuya not tell the others about his soul being inside of him, since they just wouldn't believe it anyway. However, Yuya eventually tells them anyway, and Kurosaki is remarkably ok with it.
  • Made of Iron: Was thrown into a real wall with enough force to crack and leave a hole, and he just gets up and continues dueling like nothing had happened.
  • Mr. Exposition: Acts as one to Yuya in regards to Heartland's past.
  • Multicolored Hair: His hair is both purple and black.
  • Mind Screw: A walking one for Yuzu for a while.
  • Mysterious Protector: To Yuzu. Sawatari even called him "Knight-kun" for coming out of nowhere to save the princess.
  • Nice Guy: He's actually very kindhearted, and isn't nearly as violent as Kurosaki is. In fact, similar to Yuya, he hates hurting people and doesn't like seeing others suffering.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Just like Kurosaki, he never responds to any trash talk and calmly plays his turn. He wasn't fazed at all, meeting Yuya, who is said to look just like him. However, he was going to leave Sora alone since he was injured, until he provoked him. He's also a lot more merciful, trying not to hurt his opponent, and stops the duel with Yuya once Sora is taken away.
  • Not Quite Dead: After disappearing into the light after his duel with Yugo, he merges with Yuya, transferring his soul and Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon to him. While his physical body is gone, he's still around, and appears from time to time when Yuya's Superpowered Evil Side emerges or simply when Yuto appears as a Spirit Advisor.
  • Not So Different:
    • To Yuya, Episode 35 shows this the best. Yuto prepares his Duel Disk just like Yuya does. Also Yuya and Yuto have the same motivation, protecting their friends, something Yuto seems to note.
    • Subconsciously, and as part of his and Yuya's Superpowered Evil Side, Yuto becomes similar to his best friend Kurosaki, hating the Fusion dimension and its inhabitants for what they did to his home dimension and wanting nothing more but their total destruction, although in this case, it's taken Up **to Eleven. In Episode 104, as a result of seeing how Heartland fell into further ruin when he was in Standard, he grows more aggressive and focuses on taking down Academia members.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: A meta example. Nobody In-Universe knew his name (some don't even know he exists). His nickname, Dark Duelist, was given by the creators to the public. His true name is revealed in Episode 21.
    • Hilariously, in episode 103, Sawatari still doesn't know who "Yuto" is.
  • Out of Focus: Spends his time sleeping inside Yuya for the majority of the Synchro arc.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: Grabs Kurosaki this way after knocking him out in Episode 21.
  • Pragmatic Hero: While Yuto does want a peaceful resolution, he is not afraid to hurt his enemies or even his rogue allies when needed.
  • Put on a Bus: After he is absorbed by Yuya, Yuto's spirit shows up only a couple of times later on. After Yuya, Gongenzaka, Sawatari, and Kurosaki arrive in Heartland, Yuto seems to show up more often.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He told off Sawatari for his lack of determination in their duel.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He only dueled to protect Yuzu and gather some information about LDS from Sawatari. After getting what he wanted, he was willing to step out of the duel, but Sawatari made him give the final blow. He also calls Sawatari out for not having the dueling experience gained by suffering, implying he has a dark past that has made him cynical. His line to Yuzu before he duels Sawatari in her stead, "I don't want you to get hurt again", supports this. Furthermore, his reluctance during his duels with Sora and Yugo demonstrate this further, as well as his parting words.
    • Yuto's dueling style reflects his passive nature; he uses trap cards that negates the opponent's attacks and effects, thus bringing the conflict to a non-violent end. Also, with the exception of Yugo, Yuto always offers his opponents the opportunity to either surrender or stop the duel entirely; in all three of his on-screen duels, only Yuya takes him up on his offer.
  • The Rival: Yugo's. They loathe each other due to mistaking each other for Yuri, who took away each other's precious person.
  • Revenge: Like Kurosaki and Kaito, even the more pacifistic Yuto seeks revenge for his homeland. Since he's inside Yuya's body, Yuto's memories and his hate for Academia has triggered Yuya's Superpowered Evil Side a couple of times. His hatred and grief eventually overcome Yuto and he takes over Yuya's body twice during their duel with Edo, which also corrupts Yuya.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Combined with Badass Cape. Currently, he's wearing the scarf on his right arm.
  • Sharing a Body: Yuto's soul/body is inside Yuya and can at times influence or share thoughts with his counterpart. This allows Yuya access to Yuto's Dimensional Dragon.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Just like Kurosaki, though Yuto appears to be taking it better. However, later episodes show that the war has been taking its toll on Yuto.
  • Ship Tease: Yuto seems to care quite a bit about Ruri. His main goal is to find and free her. To the point the only reason Yuto was protecting Yuzu at first was because he thought she was Ruri. Episode 104 reveals he got his "make the world smile through dueling" ideals from her as well.
  • [[[Shoot the Dog]]: Yuya holds back against Edo simply because he naively believes that Edo would tell him about his father. Edo would have done nothing of the sort, instead simply intending to take Yuya hostage in order to get to Yusho. In order to prevent this, Yuto takes over Yuya's body, against Yuya's own will, to fight back against Edo.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: He starts to slip into this in Episode 104, telling Yuya that while his and Yusho's ideals are beautiful, they can only be achieved if Academia is defeated.
  • Spirit Advisor: The first few times when Yuya is possessed by his Superpowered Evil Side, we see Yuto's spirit emerging with Yuya. Yuto's spirit shows up a couple of times later on during the Synchro saga but only to show viewers that he's still with Yuya and only partially influences Yuya's decisions with his memories of Heartland's invasion. He fully embraces this role in the Xyz Dimension arc, where his spirit within Yuya fully awakens, allowing them to speak to each other in the same manner as Yugi and Atem, or Yuma and Astral. Deconstructed in Episode 104 when Yuya attempts to be peaceful instead of being violent; he takes control of Yuya's body in order to defeat Edo.
  • Split Personality: Just like Yuya, though his makes him more destructive, maybe even reaching Omnicidal Maniac.
  • Split Personality Takeover: While he's not really Yuya's split personality, he takes over Yuya's body in Episode 104 when Yuya refuses to listen to him, attempting to crush Edo in a duel.
  • Stalker with a Crush: While the "crush" part is debatable, we do see him following Yuzu around from a distance in Episode 15. She may be a Replacement Goldfish for Ruri, Kurosaki's little sister. Justified, he thought Yuzu was Ruri as they're Identical Strangers and the last time he saw her, she was kidnapped.
  • The Stoic: Yuto's default personality. Whether he used to be happier and more lively before Academia invaded his dimension remains to be seen.
    • Not So Stoic: However, Yuto does carry regret and anger over what happened to his dimension deep down and when the right buttons are pushed, he can lose his temper. His Superpowered Evil Side does away with his stoic nature entirely. Episode 104 shows that Yuto's regrets came to a breaking point and he becomes more aggressive when it comes to trying to fight Academia.
  • Super Speed: He showed incredibly high speed in Episode 35.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Similar to Yuya and Yugo, Yuto loses himself to a darker side when his Superpowered Evil Side is initiated. Inadvertently becomes this for Yuya after he somehow fuses his consciousness with the guy and in times of distress, Yuya becomes more violent as a result, despite Yuto being an inherent good man, although Yuya's own Superpowered Evil Side has likely more to do with it.
  • Synchronization: In episode 87-88 and 92, his mind syncs alongside Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri's.
  • Take Up My Sword: After his defeat against Yugo, Yuto gives to Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon before he fuses with him.
  • Taking the Bullet: Just as Yugo's duel ending attack is about to hit Yuya, he pushes him out of the way and takes the hit instead.
  • Tap on the Head: Punch to the solar plexus variety, used against Kurosaki when the latter was starting trouble in episode 21.
  • Theme Naming: His real name is Yuto, making him the third person to have the friendship prefix.
  • ¡Three Amigos!: The Xyz Dimension Saga portrays Yuto, Shun and Ruri as this, since flashbacks and old photos show the three doing practically everything together.
  • Took a Level In Cynic: Yuto used to be a stoic but idealistic young man before the invasion. Afterwards, he's barely holding on to his idealism as his dimension falls apart, his friends are taken away and his enemies are still roaming free committing more heinous crimes. Is it any wonder why he's the most pragmatic of Yuya's counterparts? Episode 104 reveals that he eventually grows tired of constantly being passive and starts to believe that being aggressive will save his home dimension from Academia.
  • True Companions: Values his comrades immensely, swearing to stop at nothing to save them. He even considers Kurosaki his best friend, despite the man's hot-headed nature, and was willing to fight to the bitter end if it means he can save Ruri.
  • Unexpected Character: Not in the first OP or the ED, but crucial to the plot. He, along with Kurosaki and Yugo appear in the second opening.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one to Yuya in Episode 104 over his decision to reason with an enraged Edo, telling him that even Yusho's Entertainment Dueling is useless against the commanding officer of Academia.
  • When He Smiles: Yuto is always seen with a frown on his face. The only times he ever smiled genuinely was when he got to know Yuzu while bidding her farewell and entrusting Yuya with his ace monster before being absorbed into him. Yuzu was visibly affected when she sees it, as it makes him resemble Yuya even more.
  • Whole Costume Reference: His outfit besides his cape looks just like Yuma's school uniform except dark and edgy instead of light and colorful.
  • The Worf Effect: Gets taken down by Yugo. Granted, Yuya's interference may have caused this.

Ruri Kurosaki (Lulu Obsidian)

Voiced by: Rin Aizawa

A girl that comes from the same place Yuto and her brother Shun Kurosaki comes from: Heartland. Yuto mistakes Yuzu for Ruri when they first met and it implied that they are very close friends given how far Yuto is willing to go to protect Yuzu from danger, on account of how similar the two are. Her whereabouts are unknown, but she was captured by Yuri on behalf of Professor Leo Akaba and most likely taken to Academia. Similar to Yuto, Ruri has doppelgangers throughout the other dimensions: Rin (Synchro), Serena (Fusion) and Yuzu (Standard).

  • And I Must Scream: Averted. Sora guessed that she was sealed in a card, like everyone else who lost. Yuri later reveals that this isn't the case.
  • Badass in Distress: Defeated and spirited away by the Fusion Dimension. Yuri mentions that her personality was comparable to Yuzu's, implying that she also resisted him in her kidnapping. In Episode 75, it is shown that after Yuri was able to corner her, she tried to duel him.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: She has nice earrings and jewelry when Yuri kidnaps her, despite having lived in a war zone for an undetermined amount of time.
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Though mentioned often, she doesn't appear on-screen until episode 75, and in a flashback at that.
  • Dub Name Change: To Lulu Obsidian. According to Matt Shipman (Kurosaki/Shay's voice actor) it's because it can't be said without sounding ridiculous unless one uses a Japanese accent.
  • Expy and Composite Character: She's both Rio and Shizuka/Serenity, due to being the missing sister that the older brother (Kurosaki) goes through hell to find and take care of. Though since she is an Xyz Duelist, she's a bit closer to Rio. She also appears to have the personality of Kotori and relationship to Yuto, which also makes her one for Kotori as well, who was one of Anzu.
    • With Shizuka being the original younger sister character of an older brother character, Ruri is the fourth expy of her, after Asuka from GX, Luca from 5D's, and Rio from ZEXAL.
  • Fangirl: Ruri looks really happy seeing Kaito duel, despite Kaito being part of a rival school.
  • Feather Motif: Ruri wears feather-shaped earrings and a feather-shaped bracelet, which not only gives her a connection to her brother's bird motif, but is also a hint of her deck eventually representing the bird kanji chou of the Kachou Fuugetsu principle.
  • The Ghost: Although she has been mentioned by Yuto and Kurosaki multiple times, she has yet to appear in person. Despite being the first mentioned counterpart of Yuzu, both Serena and Rin (her Fusion and Synchro counterparts respectfully), have appeared on-screen before her. Her appearance is finally revealed in episode 75.
  • The Heart: Ruri was this to both Yuto and Kurosaki, as evidenced here in this photo. Her disappearance takes a major toll on the two of them.
  • Heroic Resolve: Even when Yuri cornered her, she refused to go down without a fight.
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuzu. The entire reason Yuto even defended Yuzu in Episode 7 was because he thought Yuzu was her.
  • Living MacGuffin: Like all of Yuzu's counterparts, she serves as one to Professor Leo Akaba for currently unknown reasons.
  • Multicolored Hair: Has black hair and two bangs that are lilac, similar to Yuzu, Serena and Rin.
  • Nice Girl: Similar to Yuzu and Rin, she's seen helping people in need. Episode 104 shows she fully believes that dueling should only be used for fun instead of war.
  • Not So Different: Yuto mentions that her personality is very similar to Yuzu's. This applies to Rin as well since Yugo mentions that she was similar to Yuzu too. Only Serena stands apart from the rest of the girls due to her tendencies of dueling whoever stands in her way.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her hair goes down past her waist.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: While Kurosaki's personality has yet to be seen before the invasion, he's known for being hot-headed and reckless. Meanwhile Ruri is shown to be kind and thoughtful, similar to Yuzu if Yuto's word is to be taken seriously, which Episode 104 shows to be true. However, they do love each other dearly and Kurosaki is willing to do anything to get her back.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: In episode 75, we see that before the invasion she wore a long dress and regular shoes, afterwards as a member of the Resistance she's seen wearing much more practical clothes: a vest with an undershirt, cargo pants and combat boots, the only thing remaining from back then? Her feather accessories, including her bracelet.
  • ¡Three Amigos!: Ruri regularly hangs out with her best friend Yuto and her older brother, Shun. Together, they practically did everything together. Her kidnapping by Academia makes both boys hellbent on getting her back.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Poor girl has no idea that the Heartland invasion started because of her, according to Dennisnote , once he found her he has no choice but to greenlight the attack so Yuri could take her amidst the chaos.


Kaito Tenjou (Kite Tenjo)

Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama

an alternate universe version of the Kite Tenjo that appeared in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. He was a famous professional Duelist in the Xyz Dimension's Heartland City before the invasion of Duel Academy, after which he became a member of the Resistance. After his family were sealed into cards by Duel Academy, Kite abandoned the Resistance and began a one-man vendetta against Duel Academy, vowing to seal thousands of their soldiers into cards.

  • Badass: He can easily beat up Gongenzaka and Sawatari, and he was very close on defeating Yuya, but he ran away due to being confused about all the new things he learned. He then goes to defeat Kurosaki.
  • Badass Longcoat: Retains his trademark black duster, but he does not have his Photon Change ability, since he isn't hunting Numbers.
  • Berserk Button: Academia's actions in Heartland leaves a sore spot for Kaito.
    • Not to the same extent, but he is not happy when he sees Kurosaki use Action Cards.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Yuya from the Obelisk Force's Chaos Giant after Kurosaki gets taken out by saving Sayaka.
  • Blinded by the Light: When he flees from his duel with Yuya, the resulting flash cast by the Spell Card blinds everyone except Kurosaki.
  • Broken Bird:His family being carded and academia destroyed his hometown heartland made him a very bitter,cold and vengeful person
  • Call Back: Upon confronting Yuya, Sawatari, and Gongenzaka, he states his old ZEXAL Catch Phrase: "Are you ready to repent?"
  • Catch Phrase: "Are you ready to repent?" gets uttered once per episode with his appearances so far.
  • Combat Pragmatist: The first thing he does when he sees three Academia soldiers is to immediately attack and card them before they can do anything.
  • Costume Evolution: A downplayed but meaningful example: the Fingerless Gloves he had in ZEXAL are swapped out for a red Resistance scarf tied around his hand. Also, the card plate on his Duel Disk is swapped for a Hard Light version in keeping with the rest of the ARC-V Disks, but retains its unusual crescent shape.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The reason why Kaito is extremely hostile towards Yuya's group is because his family got carded by Academia after Kurosaki and Yuto went to Standard.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Gradually after his duel against Kurosaki and Yuya.
  • The Dreaded: He's carded enough of Academia's soldiers for them to put a bounty on his head.
  • Expy:
    • His introduction also bears a significant resemblance to that of Tokumatsu, given that they're both celebrity Duelists who later Took a Level In Cynic, putting them at odds with Yuya's philosophy, with their fans attesting that they used to be kind individuals.
    • Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon is a composite of Kaito's ZEXAL aces: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, sharing its stats and appearance, and No. 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon, being a two-material Rank 8 Xyz evolution of the former. Its kanji reads "Galaxy-Eyes Lightwave Dragon," furthering the reference to photons. Even the summon chant is nearly identical to that of the original Galaxy-Eyes. The biggest difference? He replaces "embody the light of hope" with "embody the wrathful God of retribution."
    • In addition, its status as a Blue-Eyes Expy is emphasized by the fact that he has at least two of them, and can have three if he uses its effect.
  • Fatal Flaw: He's so pissed off, he can't even think straight, even when more reasonable duelists like Yuya and Gongenzaka try to talk him first before engaging.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Duels against Kurosaki, a fellow Resistance member, in episode 105.
  • Foil:
    • He's one to Kurosaki. They are both highly skilled Xyz Duelists that lost their family to the Academia which resulted in them growing more vicious as a result and have/had a I Work Alone attitude. But while Kurosaki slowly got better due to the Lancers and Crow, Kaito's wraith grew to the point he very nearly carded Kurosaki for attempting to bring him back to the Resistance.
    • Despite both being past characters who were expies of Kaiba, ARC-V's versions of Kaito and Jack are nearly polar opposites in past, attitude and dueling style. Kaito lived a pretty regular life with his family before the Invasion, but grew vicious and cold during the war. He refuses to work with anyone and is willing to card anyone that gets in his way even former allies. Jack in comparison was an orphan living on the streets and personally compared his eyes back them to Reira's but retains a strong moral compass despite his past and is ultimately a pacifist who desires peers. A further difference is their dueling style while Kaito's strength is analyzing his opponents' dueling style and coming up with a perfect counter, Jack uses his overwhelming might and tactics to utterly destroy his opponents. But they are both seen as the strongest duelist that their dimension has to offer and use a Dragon, which they personally refer to as part of themselves, as their ace.
  • Friend or Foe: His first meeting with Yuya's group involves this. Thanks to Sawatari's idiotic antics and Kaito's own anger of Academia, he decided that Yuya's group are foes, until Kurosaki states that they are his comrades, and the fact that Yuya looks like Yuto and has the family name Sakaki confuses him even more.
  • Good Is Not Nice: And he's even worse than Kurosaki in Pragmatic Heroism.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Kaito went from a smiling ace duelist to being just as ruthless as the Academia soldiers who destroyed his home. It's to the point he's even willing to card former friends if he feels they're a hindrance.
  • The Hunter: While his ZEXAL incarnation hunted Numbers, here he's hunting Academia duelists.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Fitting his cold demeanor.

Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: His ace monster, Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, the ARC-V variant of Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon.

  • I Work Alone: He had some previous relationship with Shun, Sayaka, and Allen, but now refuses to work with them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Provokes Sawatari and Gongenzaka into Dueling him because he was just trying hard to protect what's left of his home.
  • Kick the Dog: He refers to "comrades" as just burdensome baggage when they inevitably are defeated and their losses would demoralize him. Thus, any attempts at friendship, even from his former allies, are slapped aside with a glare.

When Kaito threatened to seal Kurosaki in a card, he wasn't joking, and he would've do so if it weren't for Sayaka.

  • Leave Him to Me: Says this to Yuya before taking over his and Kurosaki's Duel in Episode 109.
  • Light 'em Up: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon. Interestingly, the kanji is "Galaxy-Eyes Lightwave Dragon." His others Ciphers are also light-themed.
  • Light Is Not Good: While his Cipher monsters are LIGHT monsters, he's a rage-driven Jerkass.
  • Meaningful Name: Just like last time, his surname has heavenly and light themes and he's also "The Heartless Hunter".
  • My Hero Zero: "Cipher" is a term for the number zero, possibly used as a Call Back to the other Kaito's occupation as a Number Hunter.
  • Oh Crap!: When Yuya Xyz Summons Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Kaito has a minor freak-out. Seeing him summon two Monsters with the same Levels, then going into Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon just makes him freak out even more.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He has no problems carding three Academia students in his appearance in Episode 100. When Yuya protests carding in general in Episode 102, Kaito responds very coldly that Academia's duelists have carded hundreds of people, so he'll card thousands of them in return.
  • Pet the Dog: In Episode 109, Kaito bails out Yuya's group from the Obelisk Force, and then tells Yuya to worry about his comrades.
  • The Power of Hate: Just like any other Resistance members.
  • Pragmatic Hero: You can thank Academia for blowing up Heartland.
  • The Rival: Was The Ace of the Clover Branch of Heartland Duel School, a rival to the Kurosaki siblings and Yuto's Spade Branch.

  • Took a Level In Jerkass: Yuto states Kaito used to be a kind and warm individual before the invasion. Well, when your homeland is razed and your family and friends are carded in front of you, it's hard to be happy.
  • Took a Level In Kindness: Downplayed, but he's starting to reconsider comradery after his Duel against Kurosaki back in Episode 105 and restraining himself from sealing the Obelisk Force in cards.
  • Unstoppable Rage: His dueling used to have more warmth, but is now fueled by his rage and hatred for Academia. Even Yuto is not happy with his current Dueling style, and Yuya is unable to get through to him due to his heart being closed off.
  • Up to Eleven: He's pretty much Kurosaki with every aspect of Kurosaki's character subjected to this trope.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Kaito used to be a smiling champion who clearly enjoyed the game, but Academia's invasion turned him into a vengeful Anti-Hero consumed with rage.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Or rather Friendly Rivals, but now he is willing to card Kurosaki.
  • You Remind Me of X: Seeing Yuya with Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon reminds him of Yuto in Episode 102.

Allen Kozuki

Voiced by: Michiyo Murase

Allen Kozuki is a resident of Heartland and a survivor along with his friend, Sayaka. Allen uses a Railway deck that uses Offensive tactics.

  • Anime Hair: He has very generic shounen hero hair.
  • Broken Pedestal: He has one for Yusho once considering him a teacher but now only sees him as a coward.
  • Continuity Nod: During the Tag Duel against the Tyler Sisters, when Allen draws a card by the effect of Fairy Cheer Girl, her Overlay Unit covers his card in light and Allen draws it like it is a Shining Draw.
  • Cool Train: He uses a Railway deck, referencing Anna Kozuki's deck.
  • Expy: Presumably has no relation to fellow Fiery Redhead Anna Kozuki. He does use a Railway Deck though. He is also like Guache due to having an offense-based deck and being a Fiery Redhead to contrast his purple-haired, defensive partner.
  • Fiery Redhead: Most of his hair is red. While not particularly hot-blooded, he does get a bit upbeat during a duel.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Broken Pedestal aside, Allen is in general a kind and welcoming guy, showing great concern for Sayaka, and making sure she doesn't overwork herself. However, he tends to be a bit abrasive with a very casual manner of speaking and isn't trustful towards the Lancers.
  • Mechanical Lifeforms: He uses a Railway deck, thus all of his monsters are Machine-Type monsters. He also has Limiter Removal to double the ATK of all of his Machine-Type monsters.
  • Mr. Exposition: He and Sayaka tell Yuya about Kaito's past.
  • My Greatest Failure: He doesn't outright say it, but it is clear he feels this way about his inability to protect the civilians during the invasion.
  • Multicolored Hair: Red and blond hair.
  • Rollerblade Good: He has self-built rollerblades that can project Hard Light wheels.
  • Ship Tease: He blushes when Sayaka compliments him for his support during their Tag Duel in episode 107.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: His name "Allen Kozuki" is a Shout-Out to Anna Kozuki from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, the original Railway duelist.
  • Tsundere: When Kurosaki tells him that Yuya is their comrade, he's acting like one.

Sayaka Sasayama

Voiced by: Ryoko Maekawa

Sayaka Sasayama is a resident of Heartland and a survivor along with her friend, Allen. Sayaka uses a Fairy Deck that uses defensive tactics.

  • Action Girl: She and Allen put up a decent fight against the Tyler sisters all things considered. She made some glaring mistakes, but in the end she managed to make her monster strong enough that it could have beaten them had she gotten another turn.
  • Alliterative Name: Sayaka Sasayama.
  • Badass Adorable: Although she and Allen lose to the Tyler Sisters, she pulled off an excellent move that impressed Gloria. Not to mention she did survive Heartland.
  • The Chick: Out of the Lancers that made it to Heartland and the Resistance remnant group, she is the only female duelist shown, and though she's not unskilled, she seems to be the least inclined towards dueling in the first place.
  • Composite Character: She is the quieter purple-haired girl to the louder redhead, similar to Droite and Gauche's relationship, is a shy Meganekko like Cathy, and finally uses Fairy Cheer Girl like Kotori. Her dueling style is defensive like Droite's.
  • Dirty Coward: Thinks this of herself, see My Greatest Failure. But see Lovable Coward below.
  • Fingerless Gloves: She wears them in her image.
  • Forehead of Doom: Downplayed. Although attention isn't really brought to it, Sayaka's forehead is noticeably large compared to the others females in the series.
  • Hair Decorations: Sayaka has orange and lime barrettes in her hair.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Sayaka has blue eyes to go along with her kind and trusting nature.

  • Nice Girl: Rather soft-spoken, and tries to get Kaito to join them again with kind words. And its revealed she has a tendency to do chores around the base even when its not her shift.

  • Ship Tease: During the Tag Duel in episode 107, Sayaka thanks Allen for his support, making him blush. And in episode 109 she gets a Bridal Carry from Kurosaki after he saves her from debris.

  • Tired of Running: She decides to find the courage to duel and goes against the Tyler Sisters.

Yugo

A mysterious D-Wheeler apparently responsible for desolating the home of Resistance. Despite hailing from the Synchro Dimension, he allegedly works as an agent of Academia, a faction of Fusion users. In truth, he is not associated with Academia at all, with this being a misunderstanding on the Resistance's part. He claims he has lost someone precious to him, and is desperately trying to find them. He is the Synchro Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them sharing the same face. He uses a Speedroid deck that also includes his Clear Wing Synchro Dra

  • Adorkable: The first thing the guy thinks when he arrives in an icy duel field is that he's in an apocalyptic ice-age future. Later becomes confused when he goes into the lava duel field, making him think just what the hell is wrong with the dimension he's in.
  • All There in the Manual: How his name and alleged crime are revealed.
  • Alleged Lookalikes: Similar to Yuto, Yuya comments that Yugo looks exactly like him. Anyone could easily tell them apart at a glance. Seems to have been noticed, given that Yuya later corrects himself to stating that their faces look similar, which they do.
  • Anime Hair: Blue and blond, with spiral spikes. The blond part looks like a banana.
  • Always Save the Girl: Yugo puts saving Rin at the very top of his priorities as shown in episode 86 when he chased down Yuri even if it means he loses his shot at a better life.
  • Arch-Enemy: Appears to be one for Yuto but later revealed to be just a huge misunderstanding.
  • Ascended Extra: Yugo essentially becomes a main character during the Synchro Dimension saga, protecting Yuzu from the authorities.
  • Badass: Despite his goofiness, he had Yuto on the palm of his hand during their duel and defeats him without much effort. Later, he completely dominates the Obelisk Force despite being outnumbered.
  • Badass Biker: ARC-V's return of the D-Wheel is indeed awesome. Episode 47 reveals his awesome riding techniques.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Getting his name wrong. So far, he has been mistaken by the Resistance and Academia as being affiliated with the Fusion Dimension due to his name sounding almost like the same as the Japanese word for Fusion, and as Yuya because they look similar. This becomes a little joke in the commercial of Crossover Souls.
    • Episode 93 even spelled his name as Hugo.
    • Seeing people get hurt in front of him makes him angry, as seeing the Obelisk Force duelists causes him to flashback to images of their attacks.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He crashes his D-Wheel, has No Social Skills and is constantly irritated at his name being messed up. He's also a duelist capable of defeating Yuto.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Two in Episode 47, first when he rescues Yuu Sakuragi, and then when he saves Yuzu by inadvertently causing Yuri to teleport away, though he mistook her for Rin.
  • Big Eater: He is always seen eating while he is in the hotel provided by The Friendship Cup.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Whenever Yuya and Yugo mentally synchronize, Yugo uses Yuya's catchphrase "The fun's just getting started!".
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent for about 14 episodes, Yugo returns in episode 106.
  • Butt Monkey: At times. He gets dragged through dimensions by Clear Wing, ends up on the receiving end of Yuzu's fan and Serena's fist, and has people constantly getting his name wrong.
  • Childhood Friends: With Rin. Both of them grew up in the slums.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He was pretty blushy when Yuzu suggested Rin is his girlfriend.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Mild example, but if it's not Yuzu's bracelet, it's Clear Wing Synchro Dragon that's warping him all over the place as it chooses.
  • Covert Pervert: He's very interested in Rin being his girlfriend (despite denying that she was), and in episode 62 he is clearly staring at Yuzu's chest, when commenting Rin's clothes should fit her. He also ogles the skimpily-dressed cheerleaders during the fourth opening, which earns him Yuzu's slap from her fan.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Yugo himself notably describes himself as this, though the way that it's presented in the series is a bit of an inversion, that zigzags all over the place. He's introduced as a Red Herring ally of Academia that apparently devastated Heartland. He turns out to be a bit of a goofball, but immediately defeats Yuto upon his first appearance. The next time he shows up, he's acting like even more of an idiot, but then beats two guys at once, and later defeats three Obelisk Force members in one turn (by turning their own card against them, no less). In short, while he acts like some of the sillier past protagonists, through and through, he is just as innovative and strategic as Yusei, his 5D's counterpart, ever was.
  • Determinator: Rin noted in the past his best trait was that he never gave up.
  • The Dreaded: Yuto does not talk about him lightly. Averted later on; it turns out Yuto's account was the result of a gigantic misunderstanding.
  • Drives Like Crazy: As Yuzu can attest to, he does this when trying to avoid Duel Chaser 227 and when trying to get to the stadium in a timely manner to watch Jack Atlas' exhibition duel.
  • Dynamic Entry: Subverted. He comes into the Standard Dimension with a flash of light but accidentally hits a street light camera. Played straight when he busts in to save Yuzu.
  • Expy: His deck is one to Yusei's, being comprised mostly by Machine-Type monsters and having a WIND Synchro Dragon as its ace, but also a little with Jack's using the same Power Deck tactics. His Hi-Speedroid Puzzle seems to be a nod to Speed Warrior. In personality, however, he is a lot more like Judai or Yuma. He was instantly eager to duel upon seeing Yuto and doesn't even bother to introduce himself to Yuya, and he appears to be clumsy like Yuma, since he crashed into a street light camera. But his background is similar to Yusei's. Being a orphan that built his own D-Wheel.

His use of luck and dice rolls on some of his cards is like Jonouchi.

  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: During his first appearance, his eyes are covered by the glass part of his helmet. The second opening briefly shows them, albeit covered by the tinted helmet visor.
  • The Faceless: Initially. Although parts of his face were shown in flashbacks and the second opening, the whole of it was not. His face was first shown in supplements, here.
  • Foil: He's one to Yusei whose series is an alternative version of his dimension. Yusei was the The Stoic, didn't like to talk and was a genius. Yugo is hot headed, talkative and a bit of an idiot.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: He and Yuto both get this while dueling each other.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Invokes this upon the members of Obelisk Force he Dueled, wiping all 3 of them out with effect damage caused by their own card.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • He gets mad at being confused for one of his counterparts, yet he consistently manages to screw up Yuzu's name, including mistaking her for Rin because she was wearing Rin's clothing. And this was after he said she should.
    • He later complains about Yuzu not capitalizing on her duel to advertise their message about the Interdimensional War, but when he gets to duel, he also forgets to do so. Being synchronized with Yuya may also have had something to do with it.
  • I Will Find You: His goal is to find Rin, no matter where she is.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Subverted. While he has blue eyes, not only is he neither cold nor calculating, he's one of the goofiest characters in the entire show.
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuya, Yuto, and Yuri. He doesn't even seem fazed by this, at least in Episode 36, though that's probably because he'd already met Yuto and Yuri before (and as he later reveals, he barely even paid any attention to Yuya!)
  • Idiot Hero: He once tried to interrogate two people who were unconscious.
  • The Illegible: His handwriting is terrible, justified in that he probably didn't have much education due to where he lives.
  • Instant Awesome, Just Add DragonsHis ace is revealed to be Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, similar to Yuya's and Yuto's, despite running a Machine-based Speedroid deck.
  • Ironic Name: His name sounds pretty similar to the Japanese word for Fusion, but he's a Synchro user - which turns out to be a significant plot point.
  • Irony: Comes from the world that represents 5D's, often considered the darkest, most serious spinoff series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but is easily the goofiest of the Yuya's.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: Yugo completely decimating the Obelisk Force members.
  • Light Is Not Good: Subverted. He wears a primarily white outfit and Clear Wing Synchro Dragon involves a white color scheme and bright, shining lights. He was played up as a pawn of Fusion for bearing their name and kidnapping Ruri, but as it turns out, this was simply Yuto's misunderstanding; Yugo's actually a pretty nice guy.
  • Lost in Translation: The Resistance mistaking him for an agent of Academia is due to a Japanese wordplay which doesn't work in English: Yūgo's name is pronounced in almost exactly as the word for Fusion, "Yūgō".
  • Man in White: Fulfilled both the "Color scheme" and "Dangerous fella" part of the trope.
  • Mr. Exposition: He acts as one when telling Yuzu of his childhood with Rin, how Rin was kidnapped by Yuri, how his rivalry with Yuto began and how City works. Although, he concludes some of these things after telling her what he knows.
  • Multicolored Hair: Has blue and blond hair.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: The guy doesn't seem to understand the idea, he was way too close to Yuzu in episode 54 as a result. He also gets too feely with Serena in Episode 84, who also looks like Rin.
  • No Social Skills: Implied, since the first thing he does after crashing into a street light camera is challenging Yuto, not even bothering to introduce himself to Yuya. Later he beats Takeda and Umesugi up before they could answer his questions. He later admits to Yuzu that he has a bad habit of saying things without thinking and he needs Rin to keep him in line.

Not Helping Your Case: He tries to help Yuzu when she tries to tell people about the invasion, but looks like a crazy person when he tries to have Clear Wing move him across dimensions.

  • Not So Different: To Yuto. Both of them have lost someone precious to them and are desperately trying to find them, and both possess one of the Odd-Eyes counterparts.
    • In terms of personality, he is most similar to Yuya: both can be silly and annoy others, both care about their precious person (Yugo is less subtle about his feelings), both hate seeing others get hurt, etc. Compared to Yuto, who is mostly stoic and Yuri, who's downright evil.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: Any time he drops the anger and hot-headedness means that he's being deadly serious.
  • Put on a Bus: Starting from episode 92, he is absent until his return in episode 106.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He's up there with Sawatari for the least serious character in the show thus far. His significant non-duel appearances generally lighten the mood, but when he gets into a duel, he can really lay it on.
  • Punny Name: His name Yūgo is a pun to "Yūgō" ("Fusion"), which doubles as an Ironic Name. The O in his name is slightly shorter.
  • Red Herring: The claims of him being a Fusion agent were proven false, and a distraction from the Academia reveal.
  • The Rival: Yuto's. They loathe each other due to Yuri taking their precious person and then mistaking the other for Yuri.
  • Running Gag: Getting his name wrong. Either calling him Yūgō "Fusion" or any of his counterparts' names. Or thinking he's on the Fusion Dimension's side because of his name.
    • The Dub also adds insults to him such as "Slow-Go" and "No-Go" along with a few altered Who's on First? jokes that couldn't work due to language differences.
  • Say My Name: "RIIIIIIN!" Usually to Yuzu or Serena.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Yuzu suggests Rin is his girlfriend, Yugo denies it with a blushy, happily looking face.
  • Ship Tease: He has called Rin his precious person. And when he thought Yuzu was Rin, he quickly ran up to her and hugged her saying he missed her. Case in point:
    • Yuzu: "Isn't that right? She's your girlfriend?"
    • Yugo: [with a huge smile on his face] "No no no no no! She's just my childhood friend. She's not my girlfriend or anything, 'cause we haven't done anything yet..."
  • Slasher Smile: During his first clash with Yuto, which was only in Yuto's perspective. In Yugo's flashback, Yugo didn't smile at all.
  • Smug Smiler: In the second opening.
  • Solar and Lunar: Before his duel with the moon-themed Serena he makes a promise to the sun.
  • Split Personality: It appears in his duel with Yuto, making him much more malevolent, and a borderline Omnicidal Maniac, just like Yuto. After winning, he snaps out of it, being unaware of what he did.
  • Unfortunate Names: Well, there's nothing wrong with his name in and of itself, but the fact that it sounds very similar to "Yūgō" (the Japanese term for "fusion") causes quite a few problems given the role of the Fusion Dimension.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that he's a Red Herring and what his personality really looks like, it's hard to talk about Yugo being not an enemy. Especially since he's hanging out with Yuzu for a good portion of the second season.
  • Wham Line: From episode 92, shared with Yuya, Yuto and Yuri: "We shall become one."
  • Who's on First?: The entire reason for his rivalry with the Resistance.
  • Whole Costume Reference: Yugo's outfit and helmet resemble Yusei's own clothes and helmet.
  • Wild Card: Initially the only character to be this, due to not being tied to any relationship and is simply a resident of Synchro. This changes once he meets Yuzu, who enlightens him to the situation at large.
  • Worthy Opponent: He sees Sawatari as this, impressed by their duel.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: His hair is blue in the back and blond in the front.


Rin

Voiced by: Sarah Emi Bridcutt

A girl who comes from the same place as Yugo. Her whereabouts are unknown, but she was captured by Yuri on behalf of Professor Leo Akaba and most likely taken to Academia. The only known card in her deck is the Gemini monster, Lucky Pied Piper, which hints that she may play a Gemini deck. Similar to Yugo, Rin has doppelgangers throughout the other dimensions: Ruri (Xyz), Serena (Fusion) and Yuzu (Standard).

  • Action Girl: Yugo stated she also had done a Riding Duel before in the omakes.
  • Badass in Distress: Defeated and spirited away by the Fusion Dimension. Yuri mentions that her personality was comparable to Yuzu's, implying she also resisted him in her kidnapping. Although, we only saw her being cornered by Yuri against a wall in a flashback. However her skill can be vouched for in episode 84, where she cornered Yugo in a flashback.
  • Biker Babe: Not on-screen yet, but we know that she is a D-Wheeler. She has two outfits for Riding Duels and her D-Wheel is borrowed by Yuzu. We get an Imagine Spot of her riding her D-Wheel thanks to Yugo seeing Serena as Rin.
  • Brown Eyes: She's Closer to Earth than Yugo.
  • Childhood Friends: With Yugo. Both of them grew up in the slums.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Again. With Yugo. Yugo is very bad at hiding his feelings to her.
  • Closer to Earth: Than Yugo, often reprimanding him like a mother reprimanding a child.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Her hair color resembles the Rings when a Synchro Summon is performed. She also wears blue, white, and pink to contrast with Yuzu's purple and pink and Serena's red.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Yugo mentions that she used to lecture him about taking any chance that presents itself, no matter what. This means that she believes in doing anything it takes to win.
  • Dub Name Change: Subverted for a change; she is the only girl of her counterparts to not go through a name change, unlike the others: Yuzu (Zuzu), Serena (Celina) and Ruri (Lulu).
  • Expy: Like her counterparts, except Serena, she is one for Anzu, her constant chiding of Yugo being similar to how Anzu was the Team Mom and kept Jonouchi in line, as Yugo is an Expy of him through being an Expy of Judai and Yuma.
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuzu, Serena, and Ruri. When Yugo saw Yuzu, he thought she was Rin and hugged her, and does much the same for Serena later down the line.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a light green-turquoise one.
  • Living MacGuffin: Like all of Yuzu's counterparts, she's one to Professor Leo Akaba for unknown reasons.
  • Magnetic Plot Device: Like Yuzu and Serena, she has a bracelet. But her bracelet doesn't send the various Yuyas away when they meet as shown when she was kidnapped.
  • Multicolored Hair: Has light green-turquoise hair and two bangs that are light green, similar to Yuzu, Serena and Ruri.
  • Not So Different: Yugo mentions that her personality is very similar to Yuzu's. This applies to Ruri as well since Yuto mentions that she was similar to Yuzu too. Only Serena stands apart from the rest of the girls due to her tendencies of dueling whoever stands in her way. Yugo notes Serena and Rin are both very stubborn.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: The only known card in her Deck is Lucky Pied Piper.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Rin seems to be very fond of the color pink. All of her clothes have the color pink as well as her D-Wheel. This is very convenient, since Yuzu happens to borrow some of her outfits and her D-Wheel.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Since we know little about her, so far she seems to be nothing more than Yuzu's Synchro counterpart = Yugo's love interest. Unlike her counterparts, she is not known for her interactions with other characters other than Yugo or has her personality fleshed out yet.note This might change in the future.
  • Ship Tease: With Yugo, the fact that Yugo felt comfortable enough to hug her is pretty telling.
  • Tsundere: Type B, towards Yugo. Even though she cares for Yugo, she occasionally yells at him for doing things he shouldn't do.
  • Women Are Wiser: Okay, it doesn't take much to be wiser than Yugo, but still...

Crow Hogan

Voiced by: Shintaro Asanuma

An alternate version of Crow Hogan from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He uses an Assault Blackwing Deck, which includes the old Blackwings and new Assault Blackwings.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: This version of Crow is even more aggressive and cynical than his 5D's incarnation.
  • Art Evolution: Crow looks more masculine than he did in 5D's.
  • Badass: He defeats Gongenzaka in a duel by using a technique dubbed Accel Synchro in 5D's, though it is not referred to as such this time around. He also becomes one of the few people to top Kurosaki, defeating Kurosaki's Ultimate Falcon with a well-planned combo involving three Synchro Summons in one turn.
  • Badass Biker: Comes with riding a D-Wheel. Since it's the Black Bird, he can "fly" with it.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Crow and his gang come out of nowhere to save Yuya and his group after they were surrounded by Security.
    • He does it again, this time with Jack in Episode 99 by sealing Roget's only chance for escape.
  • Broken Pedestal: Jack is this to him. Crow believed that Jack becoming the Duel King would change the situatuion between the Tops and Commons, but since Jack didn't do anything since then, Crow sees him as a traitor.
  • Continuity Nod: Like his 5D's counterpart, this Crow sympathizes with people who are Friends To All Children.
  • Cool Bike: It's not Crow without his "flying" Black Bird.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He ended up in one of the City's camps, which is why he has his facial markings here.
  • [[Dark Is Not Evil]: His Blackwings and Assault Blackwings are black in color, but Crow is a good guy.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After saving a Tops kid in Episode 93, Crow expresses disagreement and moral disgust at Shinji's "revolution".
  • Foil: He's one to Shinji. Crow in general seems more vocal in his hatred of the Tops, refusing to do anything with them, while Shinji kept his hatred quiet till the Friendship Cup and is willing to play their games if it advances his goals. Shinji focuses on how the Tops have mistreated them and calls for a much more violent uprising while Crow stresses the bonds between the Commons instead, focusing more on being an example and making the Commons desire change for themselves.
  • Friend to All Children: This Crow seems to have the same soft spot for children like the 5D's version. The reason he rescued Yuya and the others was because of Yuya's attempt to protect Reira. Later he bonded with Kurosaki because Kurosaki saved Tanner.
  • Flanderization: Crow is all about food and kids this time around. Which considering how he lives, is tragic. This is later toned down.
  • Graceful Loser: Isn't bothered by losing to Yuya, and tells him to save his friends.
  • Handshake Substitute: He does a fist bump with Kurosaki after realizing that they're Not So Different.
  • Jerkass Façade: He puts on one in episode 62 since he and Shinji are planning a prison break, and pushes Yuya to arm's length because he knows friends left behind get punished for escape attempts.
  • Large Ham: "Hungry Dueling" indeed. He isn't quite as hammy as the original Crow though.
  • Made a Slave: He is sent to the underground after losing to Yuya... only to break out of it in the same night.
  • Man Child: His argument and duel with Yuya in Episode 59 definitively shows he has some shades of this.
  • Morality Chain: The three kids are this for him.
  • Mr. Exposition: He explains Tops and Commons to Yuya, Serena, and Sawatari.
  • Nice Guy: Saves Yuya and his group, and then goes to find Yugo and Yuzu since they cannot. Though he becomes a little more jerkish later.
  • Not So Different: To Kurosaki, they are jerks with hearts of gold that are fighting against an enemy much stronger than they are.
  • Obsessed with Food: He considers a full stomach to be more important than anything. Considering where he lives, he has a point.
  • Only Sane Man: In episode 95, despite the entire City hearing Yuzu's message, Crow is the only one who wants to unite with the Tops to fight against Academia while the rest of the Commons don't care about any of that and just want to continue their revolution.
  • Parental Substitute: For the three kids, Tanner, Frank, and Amanda.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: With Shinji, being far more emotional than Shinji's logical calm.
    • This is swapped around after episode 68 and onwards. Crow is much more passive in his resistance to the tops as opposed to Shinji who outright announces that he intends to unite the commons to overthrow the tops. Crow also is much more willing to listen to Yuya despite his suspicions about him, while Shinji labels Yuya as a cheater and dog of the Tops immediately after losing to him.
  • Tattooed Crook: Just like the previous Crow; and like the previous Crow, he isn't a bad guy by any definition.
  • Up to Eleven: 5D's Crow had only four Synchro Monsters and he played not more than two of them during a duel. This Crow here has at least nine different Synchro Monsters and played five of them during his first full on-screen duel.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While Shinji, Tony, and Damon are hardly heroes to begin with, Crow calls them out for being too busy with their"revolution", not caring about Yuzu's broadcast to the City. Unfortunately, they had other plans.
  • Worthy Opponent: He sees Gongenzaka as one after their duel. Kurosaki also gets this treatment, especially after they become buddies.


Shinji Weber

Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa

Shinji Weber is a resident of Commons and he is a friend of Crow Hogan. Shinji hates Tops and speaks of Resistance. He uses a Bee Force Deck.

  • Badass Biker: He's a D-Wheeler as well and he performs some pretty stunts.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Yuya and the others alongside Crow.
  • Determinator: Because no one stands in his way, in the name of "revolution".

Does This Remind You of Anything?: Shinji's deck, speech during his duel, and motivations may remind some of Vladimir Lenin and the original ideals of the communist party of Russia.

  • The Dog Bites Back:
    • All the years of humiliation and denigration from the Tops culminated in Shinji using the Friendship Cup participant's immunity to proclaim his "The City is one" message and call the Commons to rebel.

On the receiving end of this by Yuya, who uses Tuning Magician to add the gap between their life points and summon Enlightenment Paladin to win the Duel.

  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first thing we see Shinji do is rather coldly telling Yuya and company to leave Crow's house as they're putting the kids in danger because Security is after them. This shows Shinji's lack of sympathy to people other than his friends as shown in his duels against Tsukikage and Yuya. But at the same time, this shows he does truly have good intentions as shown in him truly believing a revolution is the only way to set the City straight.
  • Expy: Shinji is technically a cool-headed Darker and Edgier version of pre-Dark Signer Kiryu for having signature Arc Words (despite being different), being a firm believer of friendship and initially acting like a Nice Guy towards Yuya before antagonizing him during their duel. Bonus points for mistakenly accusing Yuya of selling him out and swearing revenge on him for that.
  • Foil: Philosophy-wise, he's this to Yuya for believing in weak cards and their desire to change the society. While Yuya is pacifist who wants to remake the City into a joy-filled place and believes that not all cards are worthless, Shinji on other hand is a revolutionary who wants to punish and replace the Tops with the Commons and believes that weak cards can unite and evolve into a stronger force.
  • Friend to All Children: Brings Crow's kids candy and sweets. Reira right out refuses to duel him because Shinji was nice to him too.
  • Hidden Depths: His hatred and rage towards the Tops was shocking to see when at first, he seemed to be a laidback and calm guy. It was lampshaded by Yuya, who was shocked at this side of Shinji.
  • Hypocrite: For all of his "revolution" speeches and saying that the weak can combine into a stronger force, Shinji is not above mocking Yuya for using Tuning Magician.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He sees the Commons rising above the Tops as the only way to change the system and he doesn't care who he has to step on to do it. He even apologizes to Yuya in episode 78 when he states he'll use his victory against Yuya to stir up the Commons.
  • Insane Troll Logic: His accusations that Yuya is in cahoots with Roget and that his duel with Yuya was rigged, after seeing Roget come out to congratulate Yuya. While his first accusation could be probable from his perspective due to not knowing things that the audience does, his second accusation, if true, also makes him complicit in said duel being rigged, as Roget points out.
  • Ironic Echo: His "The City is one" line instead of meaning that both the Commons and Tops are the same like how Melissa uses, it instead states that the Commons are one group and have the power to overthrow the Tops.
  • Jerkass Ball: Against Tsukikage, Yuya, and later, Crow. He gets better after Kurosaki intervenes in his fight against Crow, even going as far as cheering on Yuya at the end of his duel against Jack.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Him telling Yuya to duel him, when Yuya is worried sick about Yuzu is a pretty messed up thing to do, but he does have a point. In the City, they don't care about losers and they can't do anything about it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shinji is a genuinely Nice Guy with noble intentions and he utterly dotes on the kids, but he isn't above scapegoating his opponents and his jerkishness inflates during the Friendship Cup with every episode to the point that he took advantage of Yuzu's loss as fuel for his own message and acts like a massive Sore Loser after Yuya defeats him. Fortunately, the Lancers manage to get him back to his senses in Episode 98.
  • Karma Houdini: Neither him nor his friends are punished for all the mayhem caused by their revolution or their attempts to wipe out the Tops. He does try to make amends with both Yuya and Crow, at least.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Turns on Tsukikage and insults his clan and brother, which is a serious offense in Japanese culture.
    • He even tells Yuya that Tuning Magician is a worthless card. Yuya responds by summoning Enlightenment Paladin to finish him off. He then takes his loss badly, accusing Yuya of being a "traitor" and "rigging" their duel.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: His chin is prominent.
  • La Résistance: His comments in Episode 63 show that he wants to take down Tops. This is represented by his Bee Force Deck. In Episode 68, he manages to inspire anyone in the audience (The Commons) who resent those who belong in the Tops to rise against them. His efforts result in violent riots spreading all over the City in Episode 92.
  • Large Ham: Reveals this side during his duels in the Friendship Cup, riling up the passion of the Commons to revolt against the oppressive Tops.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: His whole La Résistance shtick largely works because of his Magnetic Hero traits; all he pretty much does is insult the Tops and try and get the Commons to revolt, which isn't the best way to go about things since even if they had rioted, Security could have handled it, according to Roget. However, the Commons later prove to be much more of a threat than Roget calculated...
  • Made a Slave: Just like the other losers in the Friendship Cup, he gets sent to the Underground Labor Facility.
  • Magnetic Hero: He has shown a strong ability to gain allies in episode 68 when he got all the Commons in the Duel Palace on his side with a few words.
  • Meaningful Name: Shinji Weber may be named after Max Weber, a German sociologist, philosopher, jurist, and political economist whose ideas profoundly influenced social theory and social research, reflecting Shinji's character as someone who wants to change the social system of the City.
  • Multicolored Hair: Dark purple and lighter blue.
  • Multi-Ethnic Name: Shinji Weber is a combination of a Japanese name and a German name. Although, Weber is pronounced in the English way.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Showing genuine kindness towards Reira and the other kids as stated above.
    • He also shows up to cheer on Yuya alongside Crow after Kurosaki intervenes their would-be duel.
  • Power of Friendship: Shinji says that this is a Common's true power, the ability to have other Commons come to their help.
  • Power Of Hate: At the same time, his hatred for the Tops is what motivates him to fight.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Crow's red, being far more calm and logical about situations. Episode 68 and on-wards inverts this: Crow is more passive in his resistance against the Tops, refusing to be a tool for their entertainment but he's forced to it; Shinji right out calls for the Commons to rise against the Tops.
  • Revenge: Vows to get his revenge on Yuya for beating him before being sent to the Underground by Roget. He drops it later.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: Wants Tops overthrown in violent revolution.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!:
    • This is Shinji's reaction to Yuya's Warrior Therapist speech by saying that he and Commons will regain their smiles by dethroning the Tops.
    • And in Episode 95, he tells Crow to save his pleas until he finally sees the "revolution" he wanted by any means necessary.
  • Sore Loser: He did not take losing to Yuya very well. He even went as far to say that the match was rigged to allow Yuya to win. Roget calls him out for this, stating that he's only saying this because he can't accept the reality that he lost fair and square and gets sent Underground for his trouble.
  • Sticky Fingers: Benevolent example. The kids imply he has stolen snacks and foods for them before.
  • True Companions: He considers his friends this, and is upset when Tony loses.
  • The Unfettered: Shinji will stop at nothing until his "revolution" comes true, even if it means he has to deal with anyone who gets in his way, including Crow. Subverted when Yuya finally manages to reach him and the rest of the City through his Dueling in Episode 98.
  • With Us or Against Us: Shinji only sees two sides, Tops and Commons. If someone tries to argue against him, he'll see them as a Top's sympathetizer.
    • Taken Up to Eleven in Episode 95. When Crow begs Shinji, Tony, and Damon to stop their "revolution" and join forces with the Tops to protect their hometown and the children's future from Academia, they responded by branding him as an enemy.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Two shades of it, no less.

Chojiro Tokumatsu

Voiced by: Shunsuke Sakuya

Chojiro Tokumatsu is the Boss, the top duelist of the prison the Lancers, along with Crow and Shinji are sent to. He has been so for 10 years. He plays with a Cardian Deck, which mirrors hanafuda cards in terms of appearance and play style.

  • 100% Adoration Rating: For the Commons. When he was arrested 10 years ago, they revolted and even with the new Duel Chasers, they could not stop them.
  • Apologetic Attacker: He starts off his duel with Yuzu apologizing a lot, because he doesn't want to lose but knows what will happen if she does.
  • Badass: Old, yet keeps up with the speedy Lancers. Furthermore, he manages to summon a Synchro Monster with 5000 base-ATK, overthrowing Jack's "Majestic Red Dragon", Harald's "Odin, Father of the Aesir", Antinomy's "T.G. Halberd Cannon" and Yusei's "Shooting Quasar Dragon" with their 4000 ATK.
  • Badass Biker: Riding Duels in the Friendship Cup. He has pulls off some crazy stunts, which is saying a lot considering his age.
  • Badass Grandpa: He's quite fit and agile for his age.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: As Enjoy Chojiro, he was focused on enjoying the duel no matter if he was winning or losing and tried to change the class divide with the idea that in a duel everyone is equal. When he dueled the Top duelists, due to their superior cards, he was beaten, booed and mocked. He grew to hate any form of cheering and instead focused on being the top. Thanks to Yuya, this trope becomes subverted.
  • [Born Lucky]]: As Enjoy Chojiro, he was stated to have a lucky draw that allowed to turn the tables at the right time.
  • Catch Phrase: As Enjoy Chojiro, he has "Dueling is life! You only live once! If there are days you win, there are also days you will lose. Do not be ashamed of defeat; do not be proud of victory! All in all, let's enjoy!" Though he often uses just "(Let's) Enjoy!"
  • Character Development: When the audience first sees him, Tokumatsu is portrayed as a serious, no-nonsense character with a troubled past. Once more episodes go by and his original personality shines through, Tokumatsu is essentially as goofy and understanding as Gongenzaka.
  • Character Tic: When he draws due to his Cardian cards, he tends to repeat Koi.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: He ended up in prison after cheating. A sympathetic example, in that he did so with good intentions, but was unable to win by playing fair due to the money/power advantage the Tops had.
  • Cool Old Guy: After Taking A Level In Kindness.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's a jerk at first, but he's not evil, and the Cardians are DARK monsters.
  • Death-or-Glory Attack: His Cardians cards work like this. They need the supporting Spell Cards that let them be Special Summoned en mass to set up their very powerful Synchro Monsters. But the Spells force Tokumatsu to draw them from his deck and they have a large payback that if it wasn't for Tokumatsu's luck, would kill him.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: He is brought to, or rather back to Yuya's viewpoint.
  • Expy: Of Jin Himuro/Bolt Tanner from 5D's, the boss of the prisoners whom Yusei befriended. His own philosophy as Enjoy Chojiro is similar to Yuma's.
  • Famed In-Story: In the Synchro Dimension, he was a very skilled duelist and was loved by the Commons. Even holding dueling classes for the children, that Crow admits he went to. Even 10 years later, Crow, Shinji, most of the prisoners and people outside of the prison still remember and love him
  • Flung Clothing: Tosses off his Riding suit to reveal that kimono of his underneath.
  • Friend to All Children: It was shown he was very kind to children and gave them duelling lessons before he was sent to jail. Yuya entrusts Reira in his care when he goes to rescue Yuzu.
  • Graceful Loser: He gave a large smile when he lost to Yuya as he returned to being Enjoy Chojiro. And again when he lost to Yuzu in Episode 69.

  • Last Name Basis: Usually referred by his last name, but his titles include his first name.

  • Made a Slave: Like all Friendship Cup losers. Like all of them, he breaks out of the Underground Facility.
  • The Magic Poker Equation: Lives and breathes this trope, with a deck almost entirely dependent on his ability to draw multiple Cardian monsters under conditions that allow him to actually summon them (which, of course, he does). Even in-universe, Enjoy Chojiro's "Miracle Draw" is his claim to fame - to the point where he can get an audience cheering by just drawing a card.
  • Metaphorgotten: Tries to make a few puns to Yuya after breaking out of his room, but doesn't quite manage it. Yuya suggests that he give up.
  • Mr. Exposition: Due to his age, Tokumatsu was able to explain what happens to Yuya when they lose in the Friendship Cup.
  • Nice Guy: After meeting Yuya, he regains his old personality and is kind once again.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: A rather odd example, because he was arrested 10 years ago the Commons rioted and made the Executive Council so desperate, they willingly allowed Roget to join the Security bureau despite knowing that he was from another dimension just because his Real Solid Vision could stop the riots.
  • Not So Different: To Yuya. Crow and Shinji reveal before he was in jail he was well loved by children in Commons and wanted for them to be happy.
  • Only Sane Man: For the entire dimension, he seems to be the only one that finds the idea of a lifetime of forced labor due to losing wrong.
  • Perilous Old Fool: Really badly in episode 95, Sawatari has to stop him from jumping headfirst into the riot to stop it. He gets lucky that Reiji comes in with D/D/D Dawn-Duo King Kali Yuga.
  • Perma Stubble: Not a lot of shaving in the prison.
  • Perpetual Frowner: After ending up in prison, he stopped smiling. After dueling Yuya, this is no longer the case.
  • Phrase Catcher: "Koikoikoikoi!" Used by his audience when he's about to draw a card.
  • Running Gag: Him trying to fight Security with his Enjoy Dueling only for Sawatari to stop him while telling the old man it's not time for that yet.
  • Say My Name: Expect a huge crowd shouting his first name.
  • Sobriquet: Chojiro of the Autumn Rain, formerly Enjoy Chojiro. He goes with his old nickname again.
  • That Man Is Dead: Says this about his old nickname, Enjoy Chojiro.
  • Took a Level In Cynic: In his backstory, when his failed attempt to change the system ended in him getting him jailed for cheating.
  • Took a Level In Kindness: During his duel with Yuya, he returns to being Enjoy Chojiro again.
  • When He Smiles: His smile is nice when he starts again. Everyone likes it when he does.

Sergery Volkov

Voiced by: Daichi Endou

A mysterious figure that works for Roget, and stands behind him in shadow. Sergey was a prisoner recruited from the Underground, known as the Duelist Crusher. Roget outfitted Sergey with some sort of device that allows a measure of control over the hulking brute. He uses Fusion-Synchro hybrid decks, created by Roget to combine summon tactics of both types.

  • Absolute Cleavage: A Rare Male Example. His riding outfit is exposing a lot of chest.
  • Ambiguously Evil: It's not fully clear how much control he has over himself, and how much Roget has. Episode 94 makes it even harder to tell.
  • An Arm and a Leg /*Half the Man He Used to Be: He gets ripped in half and his left arm, amputated, after falling from the course, but manages to survive thanks to his robotic parts.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's a Laughing Mad Combat Sadomasochist. Guy's got a few screws loose.
  • Badass: He beat 50 duelists single-handed. Later goes on to defeat Yuzu in Episode 77 and several Obelisk Forces members during their invasion. His Earthbound deck makes him an even bigger one as he uses it to defeat both Barrett and Yuya in the same episode.
  • Badass Biker: And the bike brings Bommer's to mind. He is not afraid of crashing into his opponent.
  • Big Damn Villains: Crashes through the ceiling in Episode 92 in an attempt to snatch Serena and Yuzu from Academia's grasp.

  • Body Horror: In episode 89, Sergey's duel disk for non-riding duels comes out of his arm. Brought Up to Eleven in episode 95, where he gets the skin covering the left side of his face torn off, as well as his left arm AND the entire lower half of body amputed after his fall. Thank god he's also a cyborg, otherwise it'd be an even bigger mess.
  • Boxed Crook: He was in the recycling center until Gallager sent him to Roget.
  • Brainwashed: He was also crazy, but Roget did something.
  • Chess Motifs: He's a Knight for Roget. Later demoted to Rook.
  • Combat Tentacles: How the Thorn Monsters attack.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: He enjoys how his monsters drain his own Life Points. And very much enjoyed sending Yuzu flying into a building.
  • Continuity Nod: Episode 93 has him emulating several Yu-Gi-Oh! villains and their mannerisms.
    • Like Dark Malik, he enjoys torturing his opponents through slow burn tactics.
    • Like Saiou and Vector, he becomes extremely hammy towards his victim, even pulling out the disturbing faces and mad laughter.
    • But the biggest call back involves the good old days of the 5D's era: Summoning and using Earthbound cards (even activating a Field Spell Card that summons purple flames like the Dark Signers) and combining himself with his D-Wheel like Placido and utilizing his mechanical arms to do his bidding.
  • Cool Bike: His D-Wheel is huge, very similar to Bommer's. Episode 93 shows that it can combine with Sergey and transform into a mechanical monstrosity.
  • Cyborg: He was turned into a bio-mechanical dueling machine by Roget. Episode 95 shows us there's little of human left inside his body.
  • Dark Is Evil: His Thorn Monsters are all terrifying and DARK monsters. So are his Earthbound monsters.
  • Death Seeker: Heavily discussed. As he is defeated and knocked off the course, Jack attempts to save him, but Sergey swats away his rescue, content that he was able to experience a beautiful Duel and end. However, things turn a bit uglier than expected in the next episode...
  • Disney Death: He manages to survive his fall thanks to his cybernetic implants; however, subverted in that he does get killed in a very painful way right afterwards.
  • The Dragon: Roget's top enforcer and right-hand duelist.
  • The Dreaded: He was a criminal wanted dead or alive, and the Tops are afraid of him.
  • Dumb Muscle: He may be a deadly Duelist, but he only has two mental states: lobotomized and Ax-Crazy. In his confrontation against Barrett, while he gets the defeating part done pretty easily, he just kind of stands there while Barrett drags Serena back to Academia, rendering moot the entire point of the Duel. After he defeats Yuya, Roget has to spell it out for him to capture Yuzu.
  • Dying as Yourself: He breaks free of the brainwashing, and embraces defeat at Jack's hands.
  • Dynamic Entry: In the middle of Yuya's duel with Barrett, Sergey falls through the ceiling, lands with his feet on the floor and yells "IT'S MY TURN!"
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Doesn't know why Jack is not willing to let go of his "soul" (Scarlight) even though he's slowly losing Life Points. Jack shows him why.
  • Expy
    • He's essentially Dark Malik as a D-Wheeler: an insane Combat Sadomasochist who revels in pain and uses monsters that have a theme of torture devices.
    • As of Episode 93 he also serves as one for Aporia, as a Cyborg who can combine with his D-Wheel, and serves as The Dragon to the season's Big Bad.
    • He also shares quite a few similarities with Rudger Goodwin, in terms of appearance and being the right-hand man to Roget, an expy of Rex Goodwin. **Emphasized even further when he gets his Earthbound deck, which when paired with his backstory effectively makes him a Dark Signer in all but name..
  • Face Framed in Shadow: His silhouette with a glowing red eye was, at first, all that was seen of him.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Notable for being the first character to actually die instead of just being turned into a card. And while his Disney Death in episode 94 may have been gracious in execution, his real demise in next episode - being beaten to death by a bunch of revolting Commons - is much more brutal, if happening entirely off-screen.
  • Famous Last Words: "Farewell, King."
  • Foil: To Barrett, both serving as The Dragon or brute to their master, and look similar. While Barrett is a Noble Demon and Affably Evil, Sergey is Ax-Crazy and a Jerkass. Both interrupt their boss's plans, Barrett by letting Serena go to Standard, and Sergey by being Ax-Crazy. The fourth opening notes this; placing them opposite one another.
  • Giant Mook: He's enormous.
  • Graceful Loser: He is completely satisfied by his beautiful loss to Jack.
  • Jerkass: When compared to Barrett.
  • Karmic Death: Sergey meets his end at Jack's hands by being flung off the highway and crashing into the building/streets below. Considering what he did to Yuzu, this is poetic. Subverted in that he managed to survive the fall, only to meet an even darker end at the hands of the rioting Commons.

Laughing Mad: Laughs like a maniac at the thought of Yuzu actually thinking that she can win against him and continues laughing as he defeats her. **Also, while crawling away after being ripped in pieces in episode 95.

  • Leeroy Jenkins: Against Roget's orders for him to capture her, Sergey instead winds up knocking her into a building when he beats her. Needless to say, Roget is far from pleased.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Obelisk Force grunts specialize in dealing effect damage. Sergey's monsters get stronger the lower his life points are. Whoops. His Earthbound cards also punish players who Special Summon monsters during their opponent's turn, something Academia decks are infamous for. The included Field Spell also renders Yuya's attack manipulation strategies utterly useless.
  • Meaningful Name: Etymologically, Sergey's full name translates to "Protector of the Wolves." Given his connection to Roget, his name references a Russian chess player of the same name.
  • Mind-Control Device: Like the members of Security, Roget fitted Sergey with such a device, given that Sergey obeys all of Roget's orders without question, even having his vitals monitored at times. However, the control is not absolute and Sergey's penchant for violence tends to disrupt Roget's plans.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Nearly everything about him is horrifying. From his past as the Duelist Crusher, what happened to him, his anatomy and he hasn't said a word yet. Worse still, is monsters are horrifying fiends being tortured. And then he talks, making him 1000 times worse! In episode 95, he even looks like the freaking Terminator, the poster boy for the Nightmare Fuel trope!
  • Nothing Is Scarier: We don't know what Roget did to him. And nobody knows how he beat Damon, in or out of universe, until you figure it out in four episodes later.
  • Not So Stoic: Before episode 76 and 77 came in, he never showed any kind of emotion before on-screen. At the end of episode 76, we see his big **Slasher Smile. In episode 77, he's revealed to be an insane sadomasochist.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Thorn Monsters are Fiend-type monsters that are shackled onto torture devices by thorns. His Earthbound Monsters, on the other hand, are based on mythological creatures, whose eerie dark bodies have Tron Lines spreading all through them, with his boss monster being inspired by one of the archdemons from Ars Goetia.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His left eye is shown to glow red from time to time. Occasionally, both eyes glow.
  • Sadist: He's obviously a psychopath who is not above brutally beating up pretty girls like Yuzu. Even Kurosaki is horrified by his actions.
  • Slasher Smile: Dear god, he pulled off a nice one when being told to defeat Yuzu. Episode 77 cements this trope even further when he does defeat her.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His monsters all have 0 attack points, but their effects are terrifying.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Has no problems thrashing Yuzu in their duel.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Yuzu was at best 14, and he deeply enjoyed violently shoving her into a building.
    • In Episode 92, he foregoes dueling Tsukikage and Sora to get at Yuzu, in favour of beating them into submission with his cybernetic enhancements.


Jean Michel Roget

Voiced by: Masamichi Kitada

The head of Security, and the main antagonist for the Synchro Arc. He is later revealed to have come from the Fusion Dimension ten years ago, sent in as a spy to take over City from the inside. However, he soon let the power go to his head and now he wants nothing to do with his home dimension, instead preferring to rule a different place altogether. To that end, Roget will do anything to maintain his seat of power, anything. Roget plays an Antique Gear deck, to drive home that he hailed from Academia and their love for Fusion Monsters.

  • Ambition Is Evil: His ambition is to rule over the Synchro Dimension as its "King", and to this end, he has implanted Mind Control chips into the Security forces.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He's too arrogant for his own good in both "playing chess" and Dueling. Unfortunately, he's facing Reiji.
  • Arc Villain: The main antagonist of the Synchro arc and the villain Reiji has to deal with the most.
  • Asshole Victim: Ends up being sucked into a black hole near the end of Episode 99 after trying to destroy the City by taking it with him.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He is effectively the leader of the City and a fearsome Duelist. He effortlessly destroys Tsukkikage and Sora simultaneously and has enough skill to force Reiji to step up and face him. Subverted in that he cheated with his Fighting a Shadow routine.
  • Bad Boss: Roget is a flat-out Dirty Coward who is not above mind-controlling his Mooks and Sergey, treating Yuya and Yuzu like crap, or leaving his subordinates to die by blowing up Security's headquarters.
  • Badass Boast: His response to the threat of a riot thanks to Shinji? Had it happened, Security could have handled it. It does happen, but they barely could, and after they are freed from his mind-control, they cannot handle it without the help of the Lancers.
  • Berserk Button:
    • He hates being overruled, and most of his Not So Stoic moments are when the Council put him in his place. Makes sense since he likes being in charge and the idea that people like the Executive Council and Professor Akaba threaten his rule as "King" pisses him off.
    • An even bigger button is when he experiences failure in any way, shape or form. Episode 94 takes the cake when he starts screaming his head off because Sergey no longer listens to his commands and ends up losing to Jack as a result.
  • Blatant Lies: He tells Yuya that he has the same ideals as him in an attempt to get on his good side. When this doesn't work, he quickly schedules Yuya to be Brainwashed, instead.
  • Cassandra Truth: Astonishingly, gives this when he arrives in person to congratulate Yuya in his victory against Shinji. When Shinji accuses Yuya of rigging the duel and dealing in secret with Roget, Roget calmly tells him off, stating that he's making things up just because he lost. Of course, this being Roget, pretty much no one except the Lancers believe him or Yuya.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper:Roget deliberately changes the course in Serena's duel with Yugo so she can get Action Cards and he can't. Naturally she loses.
  • 8When Roget duels against anyone, he sends holographic copies of himself after his opponents and in the off chance they manage to win, another version of himself will takeover and continue the duel until he wins. This backfires spectacularly against Reiji when the latter traps him in an eternal losing loop.
  • Chess Motif: He tends to play with chess figures while monitoring the City and moves pieces into play while making plans for characters represented by them. If one pays attention, he's actually mapping out how things are going and how he predicts they will go. His coup d'etat of the Executive Council in Episode 76 is called "King's Gambit," and is activated by making a specific move on the board.
  • The Chessmaster: He spends several episodes tracking the Lancers and gathering information on them before he makes his move against them. While power and control slip from his hands during the first rounds of the Friendship Cup, with his authority usurped by the Council, he eventually reveals **"King's Gambit," where he could forcibly take control of Security via mind control and stage a coup against the Council any time he wanted.
  • Control Freak:
    • Roget cannot stand his command being overruled. See Berserk Button.
    • He takes Yuya defying him with more grace however.
    • Despotism Justifies the Means: Ostensibly, he's just after a peaceful city, and is willing to brutally manipulate its citizens and oppressive class system to do so. However, this is all just a pose. The only thing he's really after is ruler ship.
  • Determinator: He'll do anything in his power to control the city at all costs.
  • Disney Villain Death: Not really death, but he falls into a wormhole, so he probably is alive, but is stuck in a different dimension.
  • Dirty Cop: Lets Gallager know when a crackdown is happening to arrest people, so he'll find good duelists for him to use as pawns.
  • Dirty Coward: In Episode 98, both, Yuzu and Reiji, call him this, since he's unwilling to take responsibility for his actions and would rather high tail it out the Synchro Dimension back to Academia in order to bargain for his own life with the Professor by giving him Yuzu. He does not take this accusation well.
  • Enemy Mine: Attempts to do this on Yuya in Episode 81. While he ultimately fails due to attempting to capture Yuzu, he decides to take the alternative option and do it by force instead.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Later on, he completely drops any pretense of stoicism as a result of his Sanity Slippage and is prone to screaming all of his lines.
  • Evil Laugh:
    • Lets out a maniacal laugh at the thought of Jack's downfall by Sergey's hands.
    • Lets out his biggest and last one in Episode 99 as he tries to commit suicide by dragging himself and the entire City into an unstable wormhole.
  • Evil Plan: Attempts to remove Jack from his throne by using Sergey and take over the City as their ruler.
  • Expy and Composite Character: Appears to be one to Goodwin from 5D's. He also resembles a younger Dr. Faker. The chess motif might be a minor nod to Gozaburo. His enmity with the Professor also brings Tron and Keith's vendettas against Dr. Faker and Pegasus to mind. Finally, his use of Mind Control is very much like Malik and Saiou.
  • Jerkass: The most Unpelasent character in the series
  • Magnificent Bastard: He is this one he is very good in manipulating others.
