work
A short summary page for characters from the 2003-2004 Fullmetal Alchemist anime. For the character sheet dealing with the manga and the second anime, see Fullmetal Alchemist.
----

Line 10:
The protagonist of the series. Seeks the secret of the Philosopher's Stone so he can undo the mistakes of his past of trying to bring back his mother to life. The truth behind the Philosopher's Stone, and the connection to the secrets behind the country he lives in drives the story.

Voiced by: Romi Park (JP), Vic Mignogna (EN)
----
* Adaptational Attractiveness: He's attractive in the manga too, but his facial shape is different.
Line 18:
* Anti-Hero: Type II->Type III
* Artificial Limbs: His automail.
* The Atoner: Wants to make up for Al losing his body.
* Author Appeal: A carryover from the manga. Hiromu Arakawa likes muscular men, which should come as no surprise seeing how extremely ripped Ed is for a too-short-for-his-age teen.
* Badass
Line 43:
* Cosmic Plaything:
* Cross-Dressing Voices: His Japanese seiyuu is Romi Park.
* Cursed Withwith Awesome: Even Ed admits his automail has come in handy and saving his life on many occasions.
* Curtains Match the Window
* Dark and Troubled Past: The series starts with a flashback showing the most significant part of it.
* Dead Little Sister: The whole human transmutation experience, followed by the Nina incident.
* Determinator: He was a Determinator when he was ten, and he hasn't changed since. Sometimes it's what leads to his problems, rather than what solves them.
Line 52:
* Does Not Like Milk
* Expressive Hair
* Extra Ore Dinary: What his alchemy specializes in.
* Eyes of Gold
* Fan Service: His shower scene and the one shirtless scene with all his limbs.
Line 60:
* Heroic Blue Screen of Death: Might as well be the patron Saint of this.
*
* Hero Insurance: Subverted. Is forced to repair what he damages during a duel with Mustang without alchemy.
* Honor Before Reason: Turns down a chance to create the Philosopher's stone so he doesn't kill anybody.
* Hurting Hero: Oh so much.
*
* Insufferable Genius: Sometimes.
* In the Blood
* It Gets Easier: Ed at first refused to kill anybody.
* It's All My Fault: Believes he's responsible for Al losing his body.
* Jerk Withwith a Heart of Gold: This trope more or less defines Ed. Although it seems like a lot of the "jerk" is a Jerkass Facade.
* Knight in Sour Armor
* Life or Limb Decision: How he saved Al's soul from crossing over.
Line 74:
* Men Don't Cry: Except twice when
* Mr. Fanservice
* My God, What Have I Done?: The result of trying, and failing, to resurrect their mother. Also, Edward's response to seeing the graves of people in Lior can be interpreted as this, because they were partly as a result of his intervention in the first two episodes.
* The Napoleon: See Berserk Button
* Oblivious to Love
Line 92:
* Tsurime Eyes
* Vitriolic Best Buds: With Roy Mustang
* What an Idiot! He and his brother tried to perform human transmutation after seeing a few notes left behind from his father, and maybe a few months to a year at best of training with Izumi. YES ED THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA!
* Wise Beyond His Years
* Wise Beyond His Years Zigzagged. He has moments where he goes from wisest in the room to whiny spoiled manchild in a matter of seconds.

Alphonse Elric
Edward's little brother, he lost his body during an experiment that went horribly wrong. He survives in the form of a suit of armour, his soul joined to it through the use of a blood seal.

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Aaron Dismuke (EN)
----
* Achilles' Heel: His blood seal is his one real weakness .
* Adaptational Angst Upgrade
* Adaptation Dye Job: From blond to dark blond.
* Animated Armor
* Badass: Alphonse isn't as inclined to fight as Edward, but when he does, he will kick your ass.
*
* Beware the Nice Ones: Subverted. At first it seems like he's going this route with Wrath, but he becomes aware of how vengeful he is behaving, doesn't like it, and resolves to make sure that nobody else would be able to carry out their revenge. In fact, it's his main motivation for going to Ishbal, since he's no longer certain about whether or not he should try to get his body back.
* Blessed Withwith Suck
* Big Little Brother
* Bishonen: In The Conqueror of Shamballa
Line 118 ⟶ 119:
* Dark and Troubled Past: Same as Edward.
*
* Expository Hairstyle Change: In The Movie, twice. At first he grows his hair out like Ed to be like him, .
* Extra Ore Dinary: Like Ed, his alchemy is specialized on this.
* Gentle Giant
* Genius Bruiser
Line 126 ⟶ 127:
*
* Innocent Prodigy: Alphonse was this before his soul was placed in a suit of armor and then again at the end of the series.
* I Will Find You:
* Kindhearted Cat Lover
* Made of Iron: Literally.
* Older Than They Look: In The Movie. He's By the ending, though, it seems he's grown out of this trope.
* Parental Abandonment: He takes it much better than Ed does.
* Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Ed's Red.
* Sibling Yin-Yang
* Tareme Eyes:
* Teen Genius
*
* Took Several Thousand Levels In Badass
* Why Am I Ticking?: Kimbley does this to him near the end.
* What an Idiot! He and his brother trying human transmutation with practically the bare minimal knowledge/comprehension of alchemy. There was also him falling for .
* Wise Beyond His Years
* Wise Beyond His Years Zigzagged. He and his brother both have moments where they say or act incredibly wise, only to remind us that they're still pretty much children in the next moment.

Winry Rockbell
Line 145 ⟶ 147:
The Elrics' childhood friend, and Ed's automail mechanic.

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi (JP), Caitlin Glass (EN)
-----
* Adaptation Dye Job: Her bandanna is red, despite being green in the manga.
* Abuse Is Okay When It Is Female On Male
* Berserk Button: Don't insult or ruin her automail.
* Blue Eyes
* Child Prodigy: Built sophisticated automail at a young age.
* Dark and Troubled Past
* Demoted to Extra: While other girls had their roles ascended, Winry appears less than in the manga.
* Double Standard Abuse (Female on Male)
* Gadgeteer Genius
* Girl Next Door: The Elric brothers as children argued over who would marry her.
Line 160 ⟶ 162:
* Lovely Angels: With Sheska
* Miss Fixit
* Plucky Girl
* The Not Love Interest: Although some certainly see subtext, her relationship with both brothers remains purely platonic. Even so, it's explored quite extensively.
* Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Sheska's Blue.
* Shorttank
* Squee: Her reaction to any other automail. Especially Rush Valley's.
* They Will Not Cry So I Cry For Them
* Tsundere: More of the Type B variety. She's sweet and kind, but once Ed sets her off...
* Unlucky Childhood Friend: Quite debatable, as WMG can show, but it appears to be this.
Line 175 ⟶ 177:
A mysterious Ishbalan in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the State Alchemists that annihilated his people.

Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (JP), Dameon Clarke (EN)
-----
* Adaptational Attractiveness: See Mr. Fanservice below.
Line 182 ⟶ 184:
** Badass Transplant: How he got his right arm.
* Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work:
* Cool Shades and Sunglasses Atat Night
* Dark and Troubled Past
* Dark Messiah: To the people of Lior, along with Rose.
* Dark-Skinned Blond
* Death Byby Adaptation: He lives in the manga.
* Dead Older Brother.
* Everybody's Dead, Dave
* Face Palm of Doom: His preferred method to kill.
*
* Hero-Killer: At first.
Line 197 ⟶ 199:
* No Name Given: More like he forsook his own name.
* One-Hit Kill: He can touch your arm and make your brain explode. He still has to touch flesh, however, a fact that Ed capitalizes on. When touching materials such as metal, it has to be the kind of matter he thinks it is, or else his ability will not work (Ed changes the metal of his automail arm in his last encounter).
* Only Known Byby Their Nickname
* The Other Darrin: In the dub of the Chibi Party OVA, he's voiced by J Michael Tatum (it carried on to Brotherhood).
* Person of Mass Destruction
* Power Tattoo
* Redemption Equals Death
* Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted, in this case his eye color indicates his belonging to an ethnic group that was nearly wiped out.
* Roaring Rampage of Revenge
* Serial Killer
Line 219 ⟶ 221:
A colonel in the military, he is the third most important protaganist in the series behind the Elric brothers. He seeks to become the Fuhrer so he can fix the country, and spread his ideals to the people. And by that, we mean make all the women in the military wear miniskirts.

Voiced by: Tohru Ookawa (JP), Travis Willingham (EN)
-----
* The Atoner: His main motive for becoming Fuhrer is to ensure that nothing like Ishbal ever happens again
* Beard of Sorrow: During his suicidal moments.
* Big Damn Hero: His He's Back moment
* Bishie Sparkle: In episode 13.
* Code Name/Red Baron: The Flame Alchemist
Line 231 ⟶ 233:
** Colonel Badass
* Cuteness Proximity: His reaction to Black Hayate, as mentioned above.
* Dark and Troubled Past: Has a really dark one. See Driven To Suicide below.
* Death Seeker: Used to be.
* Driven to Suicide: He's stated he would kill himself, if he had the guts. In fact, as a young soldier in Ishbal he was this close to eating his own gun after killing Winry's parents and had to be stopped by Marcoh.
Line 238 ⟶ 240:
** Eyepatch of Power
* "Get Out of Jail Free" Card
* Good -Looking Privates
* Handsome Lech
* He's Back: See Big Damn Hero up above.
* Hero Insurance: Subverted. Is forced to repair what he damages during a duel with Edward without alchemy.
* Hurting Hero: Never got over what he did during the Ishbalan war.
* Interrupted Suicide: Marcoh stops him.
* Jerkass Facade
* Kill It Withwith Fire: Part of being The Flame Alchemist.
* Knight in Sour Armor To the point he considered suicide.
* Large Ham: Ed even lampshaded this when he gave his own impersonation of Roy.
Line 252 ⟶ 254:
* Papa Wolf: Is angered when Pride kills Selim.
* Person of Mass Destruction
* Playing Withwith Fire: His alchemy.
* Post Dramatic Stress Disorder: After defeating Pride.
* Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Ed's Red. Color Coded for Your Convenience with their coats.
Line 261 ⟶ 263:
* Tricked-Out Gloves: How he uses his alchemy.
* Useless Superpowers: "Colonel, you're worthless when it's raining."
* Vitriolic Best Buds: With Ed.
* Weaksauce Weakness: Wet gloves usually mean he can't use his alchemy.
* World of Cardboard Speech: After tracking down Ed and Al late in the series, he tells them about how he contemplated ending his own life once after executing the Rockbells, but then resolved never to follow unreasonable commands again. He tells them he came after them by his own choice, then demands to know why they ran away rather than trust him.
Line 272 ⟶ 274:
Roy's trusted second-in-command and bodyguard, Lt. Hawkeye's calm, collected demeanor and remarkable sharpshooting skills earn her the respect and fear of her fellow officers.

Voiced by: Michiko Neya (JP), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)
-----
* Action Girl
Line 278 ⟶ 280:
* Cold Sniper: Subverted; while not overly affectionate, she's far from cold.
* Cry Cute: In the final episode, when she thinks Mustang is dead.
* Good -Looking Privates
* The Gunslinger
* Pet the Dog: Black Hayate's owner...though her idea of training him is a bit shocking.
* Puss in Boots
* The Stoic
* Sugar and Ice Personality
-----
Line 290 ⟶ 292:
The ruler of Amestris. Fuhrer is his military title, he is also the President of the Nation. His name is King, it isn't a title. He came to rule Amestris after leading his nation out of a bloody civil war and setting up a military dictatorship. He is also the Homunculus Pride and Dante's second-in-command. And in The Movie it turns out he's the alternate universe's version of Fritz Lang. Who knew?

Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (JP), Ed Blaylock (EN)
-----
* Badass: He's impressively badass, even without taking into account he's 60 and a powerful homunculus.
Line 307 ⟶ 309:
* Irony: Has Instantaneous regeneratiion in this version, considerable since .
* Kick the Dog: His murder of poor Marta.
* Kill It Withwith Fire:How Roy deals with him.
*
* Morality Pet: His son Selim. Right up until he strangles him.
Line 315 ⟶ 317:
* President Evil
*
* Putting Onon the Reich
*
* Villain Withwith Good Publicity
* Would Hurt a Child: His own son to boot.

Line 325 ⟶ 327:
A rather quirky officer working in the records department. He develops something of a parental relationship with the Elric brothers, and assists both Mustang and the Elric brothers in their respective missions. Contrary to his appearance, he is not a man to trifle with.

Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (JP), Sonny Strait (EN)
-----
* Lieutenant-Colonel Badass: Hides it well, but is one underneath it.
* Disconnected Byby Death
* Doting Parent: So much so that he's the current poster-boy for the trope.
* Fatal Family Photo: But for most of the series, they're just annoying family photos he keeps shoving in everyone's face!
Line 339 ⟶ 341:
* Obfuscating Stupidity or Bunny Ears Lawyer: He's either an incredibly skilled investigator and knife expert who hides his skill behind a facade of being an overbearing gushy father and husband, or he really is an overbearing and gushy father and husband who is also an incredibly skilled investigator and knife expert.
* Overprotective Dad
* Perma -Stubble
* Sacrificial Lion
* Sickeningly Sweethearts: Towards his wife and his daughter. Heck, one of his Image Songs is a duet with Elysia that Tastes Like Diabetes.
Line 348 ⟶ 350:
Major Alex Louis Armstrong, the Strongarm Alchemist! Heir to the Armstrong fortune!

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (JP), Christopher Sabat (EN)
-----
* Author Appeal: A carryover from the manga
Line 358 ⟶ 360:
* Bishie Sparkle
* Catch Phrase / Running Gag: This catchphrase has been passed down the Armstrong line for generations!
* Hot-Blooded
* Genius Bruiser: A state alchemist is a genius by definition, and his alchemy happens to be more physical than most.
* Gentle Giant
Line 365 ⟶ 367:
* Manly Tears
* Military Brat
* Officer and Aa Gentleman
* Person of Mass Destruction
* Punny Name
Line 373 ⟶ 375:

Frank Archer
An official from the military court who replaces Maes Hughes after his untimely death. Unlike his predecessor, he is an incredibly cold and vicious man and is known for his love of war.

Voiced by: Show Hayami (JP), Troy Baker (EN)
----
* Ambiguously Gay: Archer seems very content on having Kimbley work under him as a personal assistant, and they are both heard humming the exact same tune, implying they must have to spend a lot of time together. The lines are also changed in the dub to have Archer launch his attack in Lior because Scar thought he could do what he wanted, where in the sub Archer launches his attack because Scar killed Kimbley. Ed even lampshades it in the sub.
Line 386 ⟶ 388:
* Now how the Hell did they pull that off in the 1920s? Related tropes include:
**
* The Dragon: To Pride, arguably.
*
* Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
* General Ripper
* Glory Hound
* Good -Looking Privates: He's an evil son of a bitch, but at least he's an attractive one, albeit in a rather cold kind of way. At least, before he received his injury in Lior.
* Manipulative Bastard: Attempts to be one, with some success, but largely relies on his position and government connections rather than genuine ability. Still reasonably effective though.
* My Government Right Or Wrong: Is fully aware that Bradley is a homunculus and honestly doesn't care. He remains loyal to the end.
Line 401 ⟶ 403:
* Sociopathic Soldier
* The Sociopath
* War Is Glorious: His driving belief.
* We Can Rebuild Him: See Cyborg, above.
* We Can Rule Together: He offers Izumi a chance to join the military in global conquest. Predictably, she tells him to shove it.

Basque Grand
A Colonel during the Ishbal Civil War, who was in charge of it. He was pretty much just your generic General Ripper (even if he didn't become a real General until after the war). He shows up mainly to give Ed top secret information, sometimes in front of a bunch of Red Shirts. He gets killed when Scar simply walks up to him and kills him. Ironically, the current picture is not of Basque Grand, but of Envy impersonating him.

Voiced by: Shin Aomori (JP), R. Bruce Elliott (EN)
-----
* Asshole Victim: Was a major Jerkass and dies at Scar's hand.
Line 425 ⟶ 427:
One of Mustang's closest subordinates. Before joining the army he was just your typical country boy.

Voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), Mike McFarland (EN)
-----
* Butt Monkey
* Smoking Is Cool
* Unlucky Everydude
Line 435 ⟶ 437:
Mustang's other subordinates, a trio of officers that fill out various functions. Their loyalty to Mustang is unquestionable.

----
Line 444 ⟶ 446:
* Greek Chorus: On occasion.
* Mauve Shirt: Not quite. They serve a greater role to the story than most shirts, but they're hardly players in the game.
* The Short Guy Withwith Glasses: Fuery
* The Smart Guy: Fuery would be this, if it weren't for the fact that both Breda and Falman are easily his equal in intelligence, if not smarter. Still, he is the resident communications expert.
* Spock Speak: Falman
Line 454 ⟶ 456:
Armstrong's subordinate. Serves as one of Edward and Alphonse's bodyguards during their investigations in Central.

Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga (JP), Meridith McCoy (EN)
-----
* Armor-Piercing Slap: To Ed.
* Big Damn Heroes
* Cooldown Hug: To Ed.
* Different As Night and Day: With Denny.
* Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Again, to Ed.
* Good -Looking Privates
* Mauve Shirt
* Those Two Guys: With Denny.
Line 469 ⟶ 471:
Ed and Al's other bodyguard, his carefree nature combines unexpectedly well with his serious partner Maria.

Voiced by: Misao Harada (JP), Jim Foronda (EN)
----
* Cannot Spit It Out
Line 475 ⟶ 477:
* Idiot Hair
* Mauve Shirt
* Spell My Name Withwith an "S": His last name can be alternatively be spelled "Bloch", but it also requires a different pronunciation.
* Those Two Guys: With Ross.

Line 483 ⟶ 485:
A young and cute librarian with a prodigious visual memory. Her investigations will come handy more than once...

Voiced by: Naomi Wakabayashi (JP), Gwendolyn Lau (EN)
-----
* Ascended Extra: She's only prominent in one or two chapters early on in the manga and never appears again; here, however, she continues investigating Hughes' death against Mustang's wishes until she became something of a second heroine next to Winry.
Line 490 ⟶ 492:
** Cute Bookworm
* Butt Monkey
* Captain Ersatz: Of Yomiko Readman from Read or Die, but without any paper manipulating powers.
* Genius Ditz
* Good -Looking Privates
* Hot Librarian
* Lovely Angels: With Winry.
Line 498 ⟶ 500:
* Photographic Memory
* Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Winry's Red.
* Spell My Name Withwith an "S": Scheska? Schezka? Schieska...?

Line 507 ⟶ 509:
As beautiful as she is deadly, Lust is eventually revealed to be

Voiced by: Yuko Sato (JP), Laura Bailey (EN)
-----
* Alas, Poor Villain .
* Anti-Villain
* Anti-Villain .
* Artificial Human A Homonculus.
* Badass Long Hair
* Beast and Beauty: With Gluttony.
* Beta Test Baddie
* Broken Bird .
* Broken Bird
* Cloning Blues: Wonders about her past existence as Scar's brother's lover.
* The Corrupter: She initially influenced people to create the Philosopher's Stone.
* Dark Action Girl: Initially. Then she gets one-shottedoffed by Wrath, of all people.
* Desperately Looking for Aa Purpose In Life: Sorta.
* Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: As for most homunculi.
*
* High Heel Face Turn
* .
* Femme Fatale
* Femme Fatalons
* Manipulative Bitch: She does encourage people to go after the Philosopher's Stone. Lujon's death, however...
* Ms. Fanservice Helloooooooooooooooo... Her name is LUST what do you expect?
* Pinocchio Syndrome: This seems even more important to her than the other homunculi.
* Pretty in Mink: Just look at the pic!
Line 538 ⟶ 542:
A simpleton who loves to eat, and will eat anything. Has an odd, symbiotic relationship with Lust.

* Anti-Villain: It's heartbreaking
* Beast and Beauty: With Lust.
* Big Eater
* Extreme Omnivore: He practically embodies the trope.
Line 547 ⟶ 551:
* One-Winged Angel: A creepy white Eldritch Abomination
* Psychopathic Manchild
* Villainous Glutton
* Vocal Evolution: In the dub; his voice sounds less raspy over time.

Line 555 ⟶ 559:
A misanthropic, psychopathic shape-shifter, with a hate-on for the entire human race, and a sneering contempt for the other Homunculi. If he can Kick the Dog, he will. Turns out that he's really

* Adaptational Badass: Manga!Envy is a poor fighter who frequently goes Clipped-Wing Angel and never rises above its status as The Brute. Anime!Envy is The Dragon, an excellent fighter, and a Hero-Killer to boot.
Line 569 ⟶ 573:
* Cross-Dressing Voices
* Dance Battler: Quick, agile, and spins pirouettes around Ed during their final confrontation.
* Co Dragon: Serves this function for Dante.
*
* Driven Byby Envy: Of the Elric brothers in particular, and humanity in general.
*
* Freudian Excuse: His father, Hohenheim, "abandoned" him.
* Green-Eyed Monster: Towards the Elric brothers, especially Ed.
* The Heavy: Dante may be The Big Bad, but Envy and Pride move the plot along by personally coordinating the activities of the other homunculi with the Amnestris military.
Line 589 ⟶ 593:
* Daddy Issues
* Nietzsche Wannabe
* Patricide: One of his goals in life.
* The Resenter
* Shadow Archetype: Gains one in Wrath; one could argue that he serves as one to Ed.
Line 610 ⟶ 614:
A Homunculus so greedy he won't play second fiddle to anyone, even his creator, he is a failed transmutation by Dante of a lover.

*
* Slasher Smile: In his normal form, he has shark-like teeth; his Ultimate Shield form is a more traditional example.
* Take Over the World: His other goal in life.

As the Fuhrer's secretary Juliet Douglas, she infiltrates the inner reaches of the military. She is revealed to be the failed human transmutation of Trisha Elric.

-----
* Anti-Villain: Depending on your point of view.
Line 644 ⟶ 648:
* The Dark Chick
* Dead Person Impersonation/Invented Individual: Her official identity is Juliet Douglas, a soldier who fired the shot that started the war with Ishbal. It's not quite clear if she took over the identity of an actual soldier or merely if that identity is simply made up.
* Dying Asas Yourself: Maybe, if are anything to go by.
* Elemental Shapeshifter
* Emotionless Girl: Subverted. She tries to be this, but fails.
Line 651 ⟶ 655:
* Evil Matriarch: Uses her resemblance to Trisha as a weapon against Ed and Al.
* Foil: Arguably, to Lust.
* Kill It Withwith Water: Has a liquid body.
* Kuudere
* Lazy Bum: Takes the easy way out in a moral sense and rarely moves in fights, actually committing murder with one hand while sipping tea with her other at one point.
*
* Making a Splash: Her power.
Line 660 ⟶ 664:
*

Line 694 ⟶ 698:
* Slasher Smile: Constantly.

* This Is Your Brain Onon Evil: He acts pretty harmless until he's fed red stones, at which point he is awakened as a`homunculus and becomes hostile.
* Together in Death:

* Back-Alley Doctor: In a small country town, and very competent.
*
* Death Byby Adaptation
* Death Seeker
* Defector From Decadence

Line 732 ⟶ 736:
Mentor to the Elric brothers, she taught them both alchemy and martial arts, both of which she is a master. Despises State Alchemists. Easily the most Badass character in the series.

Voiced by: Shoko Tsuda (JP), Christine Auten (EN)

* Action Mom: Or more accurately, Action Teacher.
* Badass Teacher
* Blood From the Mouth: Usually comes with her Incurable Cough of Death.
*
* Dreadlock Rasta
* Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Indicates sickliness rather than creepiness.
* Happily Married
* Housewife: Insists that's all she is.
* Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Her husband Sig is easily twice her size and can match muscles with Armstrong.
* Incurable Cough of Death: Due to .
* Juggle Fu: Shown to do this with a book while training Ed and Al in a flashback.
Line 752 ⟶ 756:
* Tough Love: Her treatment of the Elrics. Upon learning the two had committed human transmutation, she beat the crap out of them and then hugged them.
** Tsundere
* Training Fromfrom Hell: She subjects the Elric brothers to this, to the extent that the very mention of her name makes them tremble with fear.

Zolf J. Kimbley
Line 759 ⟶ 763:
A former State Alchemist who participated in the Ishbal war. Kimbley is a psychopath and a sadist, believing that "people are empty, worthless beings". He does, however, have some respect for the chemical properties of human beings: he specializes in transmuting things and people into explosives.

* Having a Blast
* Just Following Orders: Happily during the Ishbal Massacre.
* Lack of Empathy
* Loves the Sound of Screaming
Line 797 ⟶ 801:
A serial killer that goes after young women, he gets taken down by Edward (after a rather terrifying encounter) and arrested. He ends up as one of the guards of the hidden laboratory used to create the red stones.

Voiced by: Kentaro Ito (JP), Jerry Jewell (EN)
-----
* Ax Crazy
* Character Exaggeration: Somewhat, in the manga he still plenty crazy but is fairly reasonable and even helps the heroes for a bit. Here, he's just irredeemably evil as after the prison complex goes down. He just finds new work as a mercenary all so he can hurt people.
* Cross-Dressing Voices: An interesting example. Barry is normally voiced by a male in both the Japanese and English versions, but while disguised as a woman in the Japanese version, however, he is given a female seiyuu.
* Hannibal Lecture: Gives one mighty lecture to Al, leaving the poor boy questioning his own existence.
* Larynx Dissonance: Dub only, when he's crossdressing.
Line 814 ⟶ 818:
A young girl that the Elrics meet in Lior. She is an orphan whose lover, Cain, has recently died. The High Priest Colonello has promised to revive him, and she becomes very disillusioned when Edward exposes him as the fraud that he is. However, things got even worse as time passed...

-----
* Ascended Extra
* Break the Cutie And how!

* Chekhov's Gunman: Who would think that the girl from Lior would become such a big part of Dante's plans?
*
*
* Cute Mute: Post-Break the Cutie
* Grand Theft Me: What Dante wants to do to her.
*
*
*
* Teen Pregnancy
* The Tragic Rose: Dead boyfriend, implied rape, mute, dead parents, unrequited love, alone except for her baby, and taken hostage. How was YOUR day?

Hohenheim of Light
* Mysterious Parent
* Stoic Spectacles
Line 857 ⟶ 861:
An elderly woman who lives in a mansion in the woods with her current student Lyra, and Izumi's alchemy teacher. As the entry shows, the canny reader might suspect something. {{spoiler|Revealed to be the creator of the Homunculi, using them as pawns to retain her immortality. Line 873 ⟶ 877:
**
*
* Gory Discretion Shot: Greed finds her old body in a rather bad state (it's not shown exactly how).
* Grand Theft Me
*
Line 901 ⟶ 905:

Lyra
A young state alchemist who serves as the enforcer of Lieutenant Yoki during her first appearance. Later on in the series, she reappears as the newest student of Dante.

Voiced by: Yumi Kakazu (JP), Monica Rial (EN)
----
* Blow You Away: She has wind-based alchemy powers.
* The Cameo: Shows up briefly in the movie.
* Defrosting Ice Queen
* Grand Theft Me: Suffers this at the hands of Dante.
* Heel Face Turn: After leaving the military and becoming Dante's student, she acts much more friendly and apologizes to the Elrics for her actions.
* Zettai Ryouiki: Miniskirts and boots version.

* No Celebrities Were Harmed: Her name is based off of Dietrich Eckhart, a member (though not chairman- possibly he was only an associate) of the Thule Society and a leader and co-founder of the German Workers Party, which later became the National Socialist German Workers Party. He was a major influence on Adolf Hitler and saw him as the Dark Messiah Germany had been waiting for.
** She is probably also based on Helena Blavatsky, who co-founded the Theosophical Society which preceded the Thule, and founded the Theosophy occult system. Latest revision as of 17:04, 1 April 2021

A short summary page for characters from the 2003-2004 Fullmetal Alchemist anime. For the character sheet dealing with the manga and the second anime, see Fullmetal Alchemist.

Main Characters

Edward Elric

The protagonist of the series. Seeks the secret of the Philosopher's Stone so he can undo the mistakes of his past of trying to bring back his mother to life. The truth behind the Philosopher's Stone, and the connection to the secrets behind the country he lives in drives the story.

Voiced by: Romi Park (JP), Vic Mignogna (EN)

Alphonse Elric

Edward's little brother, he lost his body during an experiment that went horribly wrong. He survives in the form of a suit of armour, his soul joined to it through the use of a blood seal.

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Aaron Dismuke (EN)

Winry Rockbell

The Elrics' childhood friend, and Ed's automail mechanic.

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi (JP), Caitlin Glass (EN)

Scar

A mysterious Ishbalan in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the State Alchemists that annihilated his people.

Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (JP), Dameon Clarke (EN)

Military

Roy Mustang

A colonel in the military, he is the third most important protaganist in the series behind the Elric brothers. He seeks to become the Fuhrer so he can fix the country, and spread his ideals to the people. And by that, we mean make all the women in the military wear miniskirts.

Voiced by: Tohru Ookawa (JP), Travis Willingham (EN)

Riza Hawkeye

Roy's trusted second-in-command and bodyguard, Lt. Hawkeye's calm, collected demeanor and remarkable sharpshooting skills earn her the respect and fear of her fellow officers.

Voiced by: Michiko Neya (JP), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)

Fuhrer President King Bradley

The ruler of Amestris. Fuhrer is his military title, he is also the President of the Nation. His name is King, it isn't a title. He came to rule Amestris after leading his nation out of a bloody civil war and setting up a military dictatorship. He is also the Homunculus Pride and Dante's second-in-command. And in The Movie it turns out he's the alternate universe's version of Fritz Lang. Who knew?

Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (JP), Ed Blaylock (EN)

Maes Hughes

A rather quirky officer working in the records department. He develops something of a parental relationship with the Elric brothers, and assists both Mustang and the Elric brothers in their respective missions. Contrary to his appearance, he is not a man to trifle with.

Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (JP), Sonny Strait (EN)

Alex Louis Armstrong

Major Alex Louis Armstrong, the Strongarm Alchemist! Heir to the Armstrong fortune!

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (JP), Christopher Sabat (EN)

Frank Archer

An official from the military court who replaces Maes Hughes after his untimely death. Unlike his predecessor, he is an incredibly cold and vicious man and is known for his love of war.

Voiced by: Show Hayami (JP), Troy Baker (EN)

  • Ambiguously Gay: Archer seems very content on having Kimbley work under him as a personal assistant, and they are both heard humming the exact same tune, implying they must have to spend a lot of time together. The lines are also changed in the dub to have Archer launch his attack in Lior because Scar thought he could do what he wanted, where in the sub Archer launches his attack because Scar killed Kimbley. Ed even lampshades it in the sub.
  • Arm Cannon: After his restructuring, his mechanical arm features a built-in machinegun.
  • Canon Foreigner: Is completely original to the 2003 anime.
  • Colonel Badass: He certainly thinks he's one of these, although the fandom might disagree. To be fair to him, he is very cool under fire, at least before his upgrades. Still, not nearly as Badass as he thinks he is.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Okay, he was already pretty damn evil, but his automail restructuring did not help the situation, making him more unstable than ever.
  • Cyborg: After he loses half his body in the Liore campaign, he is rebuilt as one of these. Includes most of his body on that side, as he was effectively bisected down the middle. Now how the Hell did they pull that off in the 1920s? Related tropes include:
  • The Dragon: To Pride, arguably.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Shot in the back by Hawkeye while attempting to murder Roy.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • General Ripper
  • Glory Hound
  • Good-Looking Privates: He's an evil son of a bitch, but at least he's an attractive one, albeit in a rather cold kind of way. At least, before he received his injury in Lior.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Attempts to be one, with some success, but largely relies on his position and government connections rather than genuine ability. Still reasonably effective though.
  • My Government Right Or Wrong: Is fully aware that Bradley is a homunculus and honestly doesn't care. He remains loyal to the end.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Often uses his position to frustrate Roy and the brothers' investigations.
  • Obviously Evil
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Kimbley's Red.
  • Sanity Slippage: Loses quite a bit of his cool after his rebuilding.
  • Smug Snake: Right down to the smugly superior tone of voice. Of the relatively high-functioning variety, though, as he's not that incompetent.
  • Sociopathic Soldier
  • The Sociopath
  • War Is Glorious: His driving belief.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: See Cyborg, above.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers Izumi a chance to join the military in global conquest.

Jean Havoc

One of Mustang's closest subordinates. Before joining the army he was just your typical country boy.

Voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), Mike McFarland (EN)

Vato Falman, Kain Fuery, and Heymans Breda.

Mustang's other subordinates, a trio of officers that fill out various functions. Their loyalty to Mustang is unquestionable.

Falman voiced by: Takehiro Norozono (JP), Kyle Hebert (EN)
Fuery voiced by: Tetsu Shiratori (JP), Kevin M. Connoly (EN)
Breda voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura (JP), Josh Berry (EN)

Maria Ross

Armstrong's subordinate. Serves as one of Edward and Alphonse's bodyguards during their investigations in Central.

Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga (JP), Meridith McCoy (EN)

Denny Brosh

Ed and Al's other bodyguard, his carefree nature combines unexpectedly well with his serious partner Maria.

Voiced by: Misao Harada (JP), Jim Foronda (EN)

Scheska

A young and cute librarian with a prodigious visual memory. Her investigations will come handy more than once...

Voiced by: Naomi Wakabayashi (JP), Gwendolyn Lau (EN)

Homunculi

Lust

As beautiful as she is deadly, Lust is eventually revealed to be the failed transmutation of the woman loved by both Scar and his brother.

Voiced by: Yuko Sato (JP), Laura Bailey (EN)

  • Alas, Poor Villain Lust in this version committed many crimes in pursuit of her goal, which in this version was to become human. She was even wise enough to realize that Dante was never going to honor the deal and use the Philosopher's Stone to make her or any of them human, so she decides to try helping Ed and Al by assisting them in taking down the other humonculi. With her help they manage to weaken Sloth, but thanks to Sloth manipulating Al, she escapes and then Wrath arrives and thanks to him being able to use alchemy, uses the same method to drain all the red stone shards from Lust, and then he executes her. Before dying, she relents that maybe one of the reasons she was so desperate to become human was, because she both feared and longed for death, hoping that she might gain a soul which would mean she was free.
  • Anti-Villain When she finally realizes that Dante is just manipulating them, she becomes this until her demise.
  • Artificial Human A Homonculus.
  • Badass Long Hair
  • Beast and Beauty: With Gluttony.
  • Beta Test Baddie
  • Broken Bird She does some terrible things over the course of her life, and we find out that it was all because of how desperate she was to become human.
  • Cloning Blues: Wonders about her past existence as Scar's brother's lover.
  • The Corrupter: She initially influenced people to create the Philosopher's Stone.
  • Dark Action Girl: Initially. Then she gets offed by Wrath, of all people.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: Sorta.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: As for most homunculi.
  • Face Heel Door Slam See High Heel Face Turn. Upon defecting, she helps Ed trap and weaken Sloth, but thanks to Sloth manipulating Al, she manages to escape and Lust is left to deal with Wrath. At first she had the upper hand, but he trapped her in the same way they used to weaken Sloth, and then Wrath executes her.
  • High Heel Face Turn She's the first to begin to question if Dante is really going to uphold her end of the bargain, but after hearing the conversation between Hoenheim and Dante about their bodies and how Dante wants to use the Philosopher's Stone to continue to switch to new bodies, she turns on Dante and the other Homonculi in favor of helping Ed and Al, hoping that they will truly make her human if she did.
  • Femme Fatale
  • Femme Fatalons
  • Manipulative Bitch: She does encourage people to go after the Philosopher's Stone. Lujon's death, however...
  • Ms. Fanservice Helloooooooooooooooo... Her name is LUST what do you expect?
  • Pinocchio Syndrome: This seems even more important to her than the other homunculi.
  • Pretty in Mink: Just look at the pic!
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She is nice compared to her manga counterpart.
  • Redemption Equals Death: She gets "sealed" shortly after making a deal with the Elric brothers.
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
  • Vapor Wear
  • Wolverine Claws

Gluttony

A simpleton who loves to eat, and will eat anything. Has an odd, symbiotic relationship with Lust.

Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (JP), Chris Cason (EN)

Envy

A misanthropic, psychopathic shape-shifter, with a hate-on for the entire human race, and a sneering contempt for the other Homunculi. If he can Kick the Dog, he will. Turns out that he's really the failed transmutation of Hohenheim's first born son, the oldest Homunculus and The Dragon to the Big Bad.

Voiced by: Mayumi Yamaguchi (JP), Wendy Powell (EN)

Greed

A Homunculus so greedy he won't play second fiddle to anyone, even his creator, he is a failed transmutation by Dante of a lover.

Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe (JP), Chris Patton (EN)

Sloth

As the Fuhrer's secretary Juliet Douglas, she infiltrates the inner reaches of the military. She is revealed to be the failed human transmutation of Trisha Elric.

Voiced by: Yoshino Takamori (JP), Lydia Mackay (EN)

Wrath

A hot-tempered, needy child, revealed to be the failed transmutation of Izumi Curtis' dead son.

Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (JP), Luci Christian (EN)

Pride

Probably the most advanced of Homunculi in that he can age. He's actually the Fuhrer King Bradley, the ruler of Amestris.

Others

Dr. Tim Marcoh

A state alchemist who served in Ishbal, and creator of the red crystals. Due to his experience in the war he deserts the military, living a quiet life as a country doctor, until trouble comes knocking on his door.

Voiced by: Koji Totani (JP), Brice Armstrong (EN)

Izumi Curtis

Mentor to the Elric brothers, she taught them both alchemy and martial arts, both of which she is a master. Despises State Alchemists. Easily the most Badass character in the series.

Voiced by: Shoko Tsuda (JP), Christine Auten (EN)

Zolf J. Kimbley

A former State Alchemist who participated in the Ishbal war. Kimbley is a psychopath and a sadist, believing that "people are empty, worthless beings". He does, however, have some respect for the chemical properties of human beings: he specializes in transmuting things and people into explosives.

Voiced by: Yuji Ueda (JP), Eric Vale (EN)

Barry the Chopper

A serial killer that goes after young women, he gets taken down by Edward (after a rather terrifying encounter) and arrested. He ends up as one of the guards of the hidden laboratory used to create the red stones.

Voiced by: Kentaro Ito (JP), Jerry Jewell (EN)

Rose Thomas

A young girl that the Elrics meet in Lior. She is an orphan whose lover, Cain, has recently died. The High Priest Colonello has promised to revive him, and she becomes very disillusioned when Edward exposes him as the fraud that he is. However, things got even worse as time passed...

Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima (JP), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)

Hohenheim of Light

The Elrics' father, a renowned alchemist who left them and their mother when they were little.

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (JP), Scott McNeil (EN)

Dante

An elderly woman who lives in a mansion in the woods with her current student Lyra, and Izumi's alchemy teacher. As the entry shows, the canny reader might suspect something. Revealed to be the creator of the Homunculi, using them as pawns to retain her immortality. She is the former lover (possibly wife) of Hohenheim and the mother of his first son, who currently serves her as the Homunculus Envy. She then takes over poor Lyra's body to make her goals come true...

  • Abusive Mom: Arguably, to Envy, whom she sees as a tool rather than a son. At best, she is apathetic; at worst, she is emotionally manipulative.
  • Big Bad
  • Body Surf: Dante plans to do this when she learns that her bodies are decaying at an alarming rate. Poor Lyra and Rose.
  • The Cameo: Dante pops up in episode 58 of Brotherhood, as well as in the "Let's Nab Oprah!" episode of The Boondocks.
  • The Chessmaster
  • Driven to Villainy: If the flashback dealing with her past is anything to go by, she was originally a far more sympathetic individual, and she deeply and genuinely loved Hohenheim. Once he left her side, she was forced to fend for herself and became so embittered that she ultimately resorted to horrific means to maintain her immortality, slowly turning her into the Complete Monster we see in the current timeline.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Once she transfers herself to Lyra.
  • Evil Is Petty: She's murdering thousands of people in order to try and live a few more years. Jeez.
  • Evil Matriarch: Toward the homunculi.
  • Evil Mentor: To Izumi
  • Evil Old Folks
  • Expy:Dante shares many similarities with Father. Both, at one point, had close relationships with Hohenheim dating back several centuries. Both "shared" the secret of eternal life with Hohenheim by means of the Philosopher's Stone. Finally, both plan to turn mass numbers of people into Stones in order to become "perfect" beings.
    • It is also important to note that Dante and Father, despite their shared desire to become a perfect being, have very different personalities and characterizations. Dante is a petty, horrendously selfish human who relies on emotional abuse to control her minions, whereas Father is a calculating, almost godlike creature who has literally shed his emotions.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She organizes her homunculi minions like a family and defends Sloth from Envy's teasing when they first find her. Before being revealed as the Big Bad, she provides Izumi with medicine and provides the Elrics with some helpful guidance. However, it soon becomes clear that she only cares about herself.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Greed finds her old body in a rather bad state (it's not shown exactly how).
  • Grand Theft Me
  • Hypocrite: Dante callously tells Ed that people who work hard hardly get anything, but she whines like a sore loser once her own efforts are ruined.
    • Not to mention her spiel about the evils of mankind and the horrible things people would do to each other if they got their hands on something as powerful as the Philosopher's Stone fall a little flat when you consider that she herself has instigated what are presumably the worst atrocities in Amestrian history.
  • Immortality Immorality
  • It's All About Me
  • Just Desserts
  • Lack of Empathy: It's All About Me when you're Dante.
  • Manipulative Bitch
  • Meaningful Name: In a series with antagonists named after the Seven Deadly Sins, a character with the name Dante would pretty much have to be their leader. Of course, it's made clear before her introduction (through Izumi's dialogue with the Elrics and Envy's with the other homunculi) that Dante is most definitely not the nice old lady that she seems to be. Considering some revelations made late in the series, it's entirely possible that she knew about this and took on the name herself.
  • Misanthrope Supreme
  • Narcissist: To quite ridiculous extremes.
  • Never Found the Body: Because Gluttony devours her, of course. Before the movie aired, a few fans thought it was a case of He's Just Hiding and expected her to return somehow, but it's been confirmed that she's dead.
  • Nietzsche Wannabe
  • Not So Harmless: She hardly seems like a force to be reckoned with when first introduced, but it becomes clear that she's one of the most powerful and deadly alchemists in the series.
  • Old Master:Even at Dante's advanced age Izumi seems to be respectful of her. And that was only what she showed as a public persona.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Due to being a body surfer.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Ed, most effective shown in their confrontation towards the end of the series.
  • Showing Off the New Body: After taking the body of her young and beautiful student, Lyra.
  • Smug Snake: It's All About Me meets The Sociopath meets Evil Is Petty. Why yes, she does qualify. Why do you ask?
  • The Sociopath
  • The Family That Slays Together
  • The Unfought: Ed and Al never engage in a true battle with her. She has a very brief struggle with Ed before starting her Hannibal Lecture, but it literally lasts for less than thirty seconds before Envy takes over. Instead of fighting them after her plans get derailed, she escapes in order to get Pride to take her place. Most likely justified, though, considering the state of her vessel.
  • Vain Sorceress
  • Villainous Breakdown: She has a surprisingly calm one during her escape on the elevator.
  • Walking Spoiler

Lyra

A young state alchemist who serves as the enforcer of Lieutenant Yoki during her first appearance. Later on in the series, she reappears as the newest student of Dante.

Voiced by: Yumi Kakazu (JP), Monica Rial (EN)

  • Blow You Away: She has wind-based alchemy powers.
  • The Cameo: Shows up briefly in the movie. This could probably count as another example for Dante, as well.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen
  • Grand Theft Me: Suffers this at the hands of Dante.
  • Heel Face Turn: After leaving the military and becoming Dante's student, she acts much more friendly and apologizes to the Elrics for her actions.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Miniskirts and boots version.

The Chimeras

Law, Dorochete, Bido and Marta. Half-human, half-animal beings created through illegal alchemical proceedures, they worked for the military in specialist roles before finding much more fulfilling work with Greed.

Dorochete voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), John Burgmeier (EN)
Bido voiced by: Greg Ayres (EN)

Shou Tucker

The “Sewing Life Alchemist,” whom Ed and Al meet with while Ed is studying for his State Alchemist exams. Ed stays at his house during that time and plays with Nina, but shortly after he passes, Tucker transmutes Nina and Alexander into a chimera. He is said to have been executed for this crime, but ends up in the military’s employ, working on a way to bring Nina back.

Conqueror of Shamballa

Dietlinde Eckhart

The chairman of the Thule Society who acts as the primary antagonist of Conqueror of Shamballa. She sees the people of Edward's world as monsters and believes that they must be slaughtered.
