* [[Gangsta Style]]: Averted most of the time, Uni does use proper gun discipline, but justified for her gun as Black Sister, since due to it's sheer size and the fact it's basically the love child of a rail gun and plasma cannon, she'd have to hold it sideways to discharge most of the recoil without her aim being too badly affected.

** One of her attacks is essentially emptying a full magazine while pivoting in tune with the recoil to make sure all the bullets fly in a 45 degree angle arc. While a sensible tactic, the horrid accuracy is reflected accurately by the attack missing at least a full third of the aimed rounds anyway.

Latest revision as of 20:42, 21 May 2024

This page lists all characters in Hyperdimension Neptunia, the first game of the Neptunia series, and the tropes associated with them. Tropes specific to their portrayal in the other games of the series belong on the pages for those games.

CPUs (Hyper Dimension)

General CPU Tropes

Neptune/Purple Heart (debuted in HDN1/Rebirth 1)

Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (Japanese), Melissa Fahn (English)

CPU of Planeptune in the first two games and their remakes, not the case in Victory and Rebirth 3 due to it being being set in a past version of Gamindustri.

"Nepgear ain't never going to marry! I'm banning the idea forever!"

Vert/Green Heart (debuted in HDN1/Rebirth 1)

Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese), Tara Platt (English)

CPU of Leanbox in the first two games and remakes, as an avatar of the Xbox 360, represents the original Xbox in Victory/Rebirth 3.

"I don't know who it was, but whoever invented the fatigue system must be just a world class terrorist.

  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Forces Nepgear to wear her costumes in her ending.
  • Cross Player: In the game "Four Goddesses Online", she is stated to play a male character.
  • Detached Sleeves: Both of her forms wear outfits that have this.
  • Gamer Chick
  • Girls Love: She's not the type to go looking for it (IF in Rebirth 1 excepted), but she is definitely flattered to be on the receiving end of it.
  • Hair of Gold
  • Heavy Sleeper: When you see Green Heart for the first time, she's just waking up and goes back to sleep while IF was talking with her. A funny nod to the "Red Ring of Death".
    • One of her default accessories in the Rebirth games references this.
  • The Hedonist: Green Heart is not just a gamer girl but also a hedonist. Most of her blog talks about her recent parties and the banquets she had.
  • Meaningful Name: "Vert" means "green" in French, and she's wearing green, which also represents the Xbox360 and later Xbox One.
  • Mercy Kill: During the Conquest Ending route of mk2/Rebirth2, she requests Nepgear to finish her off with the cursed sword since she has no hope of surviving after the beating Linda gives to her.
  • Onee-Sama: Nepgear points out that she is the one most like a big sister among the goddesses, and that it's rather ironic considering she actually has no real sisters. Vert explains that it's merely because she had to to keep the other three of them in line.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Blonde, Blue Eye, Busty American.
  • Tall Blonde And Bishoujo
  • The Other Darrin: Vert was replaced by Rom's English VA for a few games, due to Tara Platt not being available.
  • The Nicknamer: She doesn't create them herself, but she picks up upon nicknames Compa assigns characters, and enjoys using them as a means to be less formal.
  • Underboobs: She plays this trope straight. Neptune even refers to her as such.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: When she isn't playing an MMORPG, Vert would probably make any guy who think she is an easy lay will be in for a VERY rude shock (namely when she wants you to bring friends).
  • You Gotta Have Green Hair: As Green Heart.

Noire/Black Heart (debuted in HDN1/Rebirth 1)

Voiced by: Asami Imai (Japanese), Erin Fitzgerald (English)

CPU of Lastastion in the first two games, represents the original Playstation in Victory/Rebirth 3.

Blanc/White Heart

Voiced by: Kana Asumi (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

CPU of Lowee in the first games and remakes, represent the original NES in Victory/Rebirth 3.

Nepgear/Purple Sister

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Christine Marie Cabanos (English)

Nepgear: "I should have done this a long time ago."

  • Expy: Of Neptune
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When you summon Keiji Inafune, his eyes glow before Nepgear delivers the final blow.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Especially if you summon Keiji Inafune.
  • Intimate Healing: IF decides to go this route to snap her out of it and get her to go HDD. Compa voices disappointment that she wasn't the one who got to get "Lovey-Dovey" with Nepgear.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Tries to take on a dragon at the behest of "Chika" and almost gets owned by it before being rescued by Cave.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Both she and Nisa think she's a Jack of All Stats when she's really this. If you play her right, she's a good tank, dishes out damage harder than the rest, is a required character to all of the Combination Attacks and yet the Irony? She's a Game Breaker if you place her as a support role because she's the only one who can get rid of the Damage Cap allowing other characters to damage enemies beyond 9999.
  • Lonely at the Top: In the Conquest Ending. By the end, she has killed all the other goddesses and united the world under her rule, and those of her friends who are still alive leave her after Arfoire is defeated.

Nepgear: "This is the dark path that I've chosen to walk alone."

Uni/Black Sister(mk2/Rebirth 1/2 appearance)

Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (Japanese), Sarah Williams (English)

  • BFG: Her weapon of choice.
    • Small Girl, Big Gun
    • Some of her guns imply that she's actually just making them look larger than they really are.
  • Bare Your Midriff: In her power up Black Sister version.
  • Boring but Practical: Charley Horse! does no damage nor does it help guard break, but it will lower even a boss's avoidance so someone else can actually start doing damage.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Mostly explained by her weapons being energy based, though some do appear to fire ballistic rounds, though this may still be in effect since she apparently uses her CPU power to replenish the ammo.
  • Breast Expansion: Inverted. Turning into Black Sister causes her to flatten, and this actually gets brought up by Nepgear at one point.
    • Turns into a Running Gag in later games, much to her consternation.
  • Camera Abuse: One of her skills kicks the camera and shuts it off. It's used to lower the accuracy of enemies.
  • Expy: Of Noire.
  • Gangsta Style: Averted most of the time, Uni does use proper gun discipline, but justified for her gun as Black Sister, since due to it's sheer size and the fact it's basically the love child of a rail gun and plasma cannon, she'd have to hold it sideways to discharge most of the recoil without her aim being too badly affected.
  • Generation Xerox: Hers and Nepgear's interactions in the second game are much like how Neptune and Noire's interactions went.
  • Gun Nut: Her and K-Sha can be found discussing various gun modifications in Megadimension Neptunia VII, and it's noted she has as much love for guns as Nepgear does for mecha.
  • Hair Decorations
  • I Call It "Vera": Her "Unigunov" weapon in Megadimension Neptunia, since she designed it.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Some of her attacks involve spraying ammo everywhere, with so-so accuracy at times.
    • One of her attacks is essentially emptying a full magazine while pivoting in tune with the recoil to make sure all the bullets fly in a 45 degree angle arc. While a sensible tactic, the horrid accuracy is reflected accurately by the attack missing at least a full third of the aimed rounds anyway.
  • Irony: Nepgear may be the mecha geek, but it's Uni who winds up befriending mecha based entities like CFW Brave in the second game and later Steamax in VII.
  • Love Confession: In her character info quotes, and surprisingly short and simple.

"I love you Nepgear."

  • Mega Twintails
  • More Dakka: Her better attack combos pile on the fired rounds.
  • Named Weapons: After you kill Brave The Hard for the final time (that is, in the True Ending), Brave powers up her Black Sister weapon and gives her the Brave Cannon.
  • Stripperific: As Black Sister
  • Swiss Army Gun: While the gun itself doesn't change it's entire appearance to do so, she can convert any of her weapons to switch between laser and ballistic weapons firing modes, as well as switching from assault rifle to shotgun to grenade launcher/recoil-less rifle firing modes during her attacks.
  • Tsundere: Towards Nepgear.
  • White-Haired Pretty Girl: As Black Sister.

Ram/White Sister(mk2/Rebirth 1/2 appearance)

Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara (Japanese)

Rom/White Sister(mk2/Rebirth 1/2 appearance)

Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Japanese)

Makers

General Maker Tropes

  • Moe Anthropomorphism: Of video game producers.[1]
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: In most settings these characters would be considered fairly powerful. Only problem is they're working with a bunch of Physical Gods.
    • This trope can be zigzagged in the second game and remake, where you have to rely on the Maker characters to do most of the fighting for a majority of the game, since over half the CPUs can be recruited at much lower levels, and if you go for the Conquest ending, they can pull off a dark twist on Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu? by helping to kill most of the CPUs.
    • And is subverted at times when the CPUs are depowered or lower in level, in which cases they become Crutch Characters, and even when this is not the case the maker characters tend to have some redeeming virtues like a greater healing skill set, more elemental attack variety, or cheaper support magic.

IF[2]

Voiced by: Kana Ueda (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)

  • Affectionate Nickname: Commonly referred to as Iffy or Ai-chan, depending on game region. She even endorses these nicknames, being less awkward to say than her actual name.
  • Badass Longcoat: IF wears one.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: IF's weapon looks like some Wolverine Claws with guns attached to it. It's also the only way she shoots at enemies. This was excised in the Rebirth games, where she sticks with blades exclusively, and in the animation where she uses small handguns instead.
  • Chick Magnet: With all of the Les Yay in the game, it's somewhat surprising that a lot more of it involves her than Neptune. Unless the character in question is Vert or 5pb she's not amused by this.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Comes up both in Chirper events and her character info page quotes.

"I won't give Compa to anyone!.... Sh-She's my best friend."

IF (early in the game): As expected. Not worth celebrating, but... nice.
IF (towards the end of the game): No way... am I dreaming? Awesome, we're so awesome! Yay!

    • Toned down somewhat in Rebirth 1, where the warming up period happens somewhat faster.
  • Fan Girl: IF states that she is a fangirl of 5pb. In the original Neptunia and Rebirth 1, she was one for Vert.
  • Impractically Fancy Outfit: Her sleeves are a bit too long and get in the way of the built in guns to her Qatars and Claws. She may point this out, or scold you for just not noticing this problem, while using gun attacks.
    • Downplayed in the remakes, where it's stated she prefers to buy her coats oversized to hide her bladed weapons, though the outfits still look fancy yet ill fitting in animations.
  • In-Series Nickname: Iffy. Ai-chan (As in the "I" in IF) in Japan. Not exactly happy with it.
  • Jack of All Stats: More so than Neptune as she also brings in a decent amount of healing capabilities.
  • Knowledge Broker: Her excessive supply of cell phones is not just for show, they're used to keep in contact with The Guild across all four worlds.
  • The Lancer
  • Not So Stoic: While she'll try to keep things serious, she'll go into a Heroic BSOD over her phones breaking or start blatantly Breaking the Fourth Wall when pushed too far.
  • Only Sane Man: While she has her own oddities and quirks, she's basically this to both Compa and Neptune.
  • Pay Evil Unto Evil: In mkII the Guild's primary activities are, as Nepgear quickly points out, "pretty wicked". It's okay though, because lately they've chosen to target criminal syndicates instead.

Nepgear: That reminds me, I wanted to ask what your organization actually...does.

IF: Espionage, generally. Acquire confidential intelligence from other nations, spread misinformation to stir up politicians, or sometimes...

Nepgear: That all sounds pretty wicked.

IF: Don't get the wrong idea. We've only handled criminal syndicates lately.

  • Power Trio: Her, Neptune, and Compa.
  • Supporting Leader: Right from the start she points out that it's actually Neptune joining her. She's the one with all the connections and she's the one that figures things out, but she tends to let Neptune and Compa stay in the spotlight. Though the DLC quests for new characters focus quite a bit on her, Neptune and Compa receive a passing mention at best.
  • Straight Woman: In one of the Chirper events, Neptune tells her that she can "take the role of the straight-faced punchline chick."
    • Amusingly inverted if you check out the comments on her special attacks, which reveal they were all dreamed up after what must have been a Dungeons & Dragons game session.
  • Team Dad
  • Too Many Belts: IF's design looks like she has a ton of belts on her clothes.
    • And neck collars for everyone!
    • She's only got two, three if you count the collar. One for her pants and one on her coat to hold her nine cellphones. Admittedly, the cuffs of her coat do look a bit like belts, but they're not.
  • Transparent Closet: After Compa's Chick Magnet moment, Nisa calls attention to this, claiming that the closet door just opened. Nepgear is the only one that seemed surprised, everyone else just finds it completely adorable and immediately shift to topic to wedding plans while she repeatedly insists she meant to say something else.
    • She becomes incredibly irritated and depressed, to the point of running off, when Nepgear asks Compa who she likes more, Neptune or IF.
    • There is so much lesbianism in the series IF's refusal to be honest about her own becomes a Running Gag.
  • Tsundere: Type A. This is pointed out by name.

Compa[3]

Voiced by: Kanako Sakai (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

Compa: "Besides, syringes are easy to use. You can whack, thrust, or inject something into your opponent."
Nepgear: "I wouldn't want to get a shot from the same needle after you stuck it into a nasty monster."
Compa: "I won't inoculate you. This medicine is just for bad people. If you give them a dose of this or even a puff of air, it's very effective at shutting them up for good."
Nepgear: "Th-That was a completely inappropriate comment to make as a nurse!"

IF: "S-Stop this stupid debate, everyone! Can't you see that Compa's all mine!?"

Nepgear, Nisa, Gust, 5pb: "..."

IF: "Tch, crap! N-No! What I meant to say was..."

Compa: "Thiswill hurt!"

Gust

Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani (Japanese), Cassandra Lee (English)

Nisa: "Yes, on justice!"

Tekken

Broccoli

  • Brutal Honesty: Broccoli is very blunt.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Neptune calls her Puchiko. Broccoli does not like being called that at all.
  • Nice Hat: The cat ear like hat she wears, along with it's variants from her other hat choices.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite looking like a child, Broccoli is very mature and levelheaded for her age.

MAGES.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: While she is brilliant, she's also prone to making pretend phone calls to some nonexistent colleagues about a mysterious "Organization".
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: With 5pb. as the levelheaded one.
  • Laughing Mad: While occasionally let go some impressive deranged sounding laughter in her menu voice commentary.
  • Mad Scientist: With Magitek based inventions, but otherwise the same principle holds.
  • Nice Hat: A wizard style hat with two gears wrapped around it's sides.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": The period is part of the name. She even chides Neptune for leaving it off in Rebirth 1.
  • Strange Bedfellows: With young IF in Victory/Rebirth 3, and to a lesser extent Nepgear, with whom she bonds over their shared love of science, though even Nepgear finds MAGES. quite quirky despite this.
  • Strange Girl: Even self admitted as "mad", for reasons described above.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her and 5pb. share the exact same beauty mark below the right eye.
  • Troll: Loves to annoy Noire by calling her "assistant" and gets her kicks trolling Vert on Neppit.

Oracles

Histoire (Hyperdimension)

Voiced by: Mika Kanai (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)

  • Affectionate Nickname: Histy
  • Badass - Is insanely powerful even at low levels when playable.
  • Big Good
  • Great Big Book of Everything: Unfortunately it'll take three days for her to find the information needed in her, so it's better to just go out and figure things out without her.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: She's also a book.
  • Promoted to Playable: In Rebirth 1/2/3, as her HDN2 incarnation.
  • Nice Hat: Becomes a plot point in Megadimension Neptunia VII. Her hat was the inspiration for Orange Heart's hat.
  • Physical God: Can't do anything without the other Goddesses' consent though.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Possess this trait, as she is, before being an Oracle of Planeptune, the recorder of all history in Gamindustri, thus everything that happens is recorded by her in some fashion. In MDN VII, this becomes a Chekhov's Gun Since it renders her immune to the rewrite of Gamindustri that replaced the CPUs with the Gold Third. She knows this occured and was incorporated into the rewrite, but still remembers everything prior to the rewrite, which provides her the ability to get Neptune into the Basilicom on her own authority since no one else remembers her.

Mina Nishizawa

Voiced by: Sayaka Nakaya (Japanese)

Chika Hakozaki

Voiced by: Yuka Komatsu (Japanese), Michelle Ann Dunphy (English)

  • Badass: She's basically a Vert clone skillset wise, with the stats to match.
  • Drama Queen: Boy, does she go off for the stupidest reasons. However, during the Conquest Ending, she has a genuine reason to cry and scream.
  • Hair Decorations
  • Homoerotic Subtext: Seems to be waaaaaaaaaay obsessive with Vert.
  • Incest Subtext: Claims Vert and her are like sisters. See above to understand why this is in question.
  • Promoted to Playable: In Rebirth 2 as a secret character. Unlockable in Rebirth 3 as a DLC character.
  • Wingding Eyes: Gets hearts in her eyes whenever Vert is involved.

Kei Jinguji

Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei (Japanese)

Kei: I'd rather not waste our precious time discussing the mythical creations known as emotions.
Mina: That's not a good answer. If you want her to open up to you, you need to open up to her.
Kei: Adult conversations consist entirely of valid logic and efficient syntax.

Ganache

  • Affably Evil: He may be a jackass, but he's polite about it, going as far as to turn on the lights when he had Neptune and her party trapped because "total darkness" would be too cruel.
  • Fan Boy: Of Lady Blanc. Or rather, a Mary Sue interpretation of her in Rebirth 1.
  • Gadgeteer Genius
  • Genre Savvy: When Arfoire shows up to make a deal, he knows not to trust her automatically.
  • Hostage Situation: Conjures up something of the like for the Tech Expo, to make sure Neptune and her party go there quickly
    • Shoot the Hostage: He outright says something regrettable will happen to the Expo attendees if Neptune and her party don't go there quickly
  • Heel Face Turn: In the Rebirth canon, even he realizes the need to join forces with the good guys when The CPU Breaker goes haywire, and is later forgiven by Noire, whom he decides to work for in the ending of Rebirth 1.
  • In-Series Nickname: Solicitor (IF) or "Mr." Solicitor (Compa).
  • Jerkass: And HOW.
  • Out of Focus: After the Lastation section of the first game. Doesn't make him any less of a douche. Averted in the Rebirth version, which expanded his role.
  • Smug Snake
  • The Chessmaster: During the time you spend in Lastation (read: half of the first game), Ganache himself states he's manipulated everything from the start up the the current point, from the moment he heard of the Console War.
  • The Dragon: Of a manner, he could easily be seen as filling this role to Lady Black Heart, if one was to consider her a villain.
  • The Faceless: Standard with NPC's of the game. Averted in Rebirth 1, where he has a face portrait.
  • Willfully Weak: He was the founder of Avenir, however, he has the rank of a regular employee. This was all part of his plan however.
    • Is a high ranking executive, but otherwise appliues in Rebirth 1.

Jade (original game character, does not show up in Rebirth 1)

Jade: I'm a member of the Guild. I live on Leanbox, but I don't follow Lady Green Heart...
Neptune: ...Why're you telling me now? What's up with this?
Jade: I... I'm into girls... like... Lady White Heart.

  • grack*

IF: ...And that's that. You finished him off.

Neptune: Oops. Well, that was for ruining the moment.

Yvoire

  • Corrupt Church: Is the leader of it and it doesn't begin to describe him.
    • To put things in perspective, he tried to get IF to poison Neptune, went ahead and did it himself, then arrested all three girls as "criminals". Jade later goes into more detail about Yvoire, going on about how he destroyed any documents pertaining to the purge of the Guild, refusing to acknowledge the atrocities committed.
    • Rebirth 1 tones him down somewhat, though he still does most of the above spoilered, minus the document purge and Guild business in the Rebirth version, and he's much less important in the Rebirth continuity.
  • Jerkass: Remember Ganache? Yvoire is a friggin' competitor for his title at this.
  • Leave Your Quest Test: Gives IF an offer to become a Leanbox citizen, so she can worship Lady Green Heart freely.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Everything he does is for the sake of Lady Green Heart.
