"Leonardo leads,
Donatello does machines,
Raphael is cool but rude,

Michelangelo is a party dude!"

A Five-Man Band specializes by role to the team. Someone leads, someone disagrees, someone is smart, someone is tough, and someone ensures that none of the above kill each other.

Unfortunately, when writing within context of a certain profession, goal, or genre, some of these roles are useless, and especially when characters are in groups that are supposed to be specialized, it doesn't make sense to have some of these roles; in a group of scientific researchers, wouldn't all of them be smart? In a group of politicians, wouldn't all of them lead and disagree? Don't astronauts have to be well-rounded and exceptional in many ways?

But there is a way to make a group of people diverse without giving them specialized roles in a form of a group that would probably best be specialized for questing. One way is through personality, in this case based off of wacky ancient pseudoscience.

The four temperaments (also called the "four humors") was a theory that behavior was caused by concentrations of body fluids -- the "humours" of Classical medicine: namely blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Each of these would affect a person's personality differently, and the way these fluids were thought to affect behavior eventually became a part of personality theory, eventually separated completely from the idea that fluids actually controlled behavior. However, the names still remain. An ensemble based on these four humors can make the ensemble diverse without actually changing the roles of the characters in the show's continuity.

The four temperaments (humors) are:

Alternatively, there's a system of five temperaments where the Phlegmatic is moved into a central, fifth position, with the fourth corner being filled by the Supine temperament:

  • Supine (tears): Quiet, friendly, nonconfrontational, and dependent on others. Basically narrows the first type phlegmatic category down to those whose introversion is due to shyness and/or low self-esteem.
  • Phlegmatic II: The "middle of the road" temperament. Someone who typically doesn't exhibit the extremes or weaknesses of the four basic temperaments. In a positive light: Balanced and well-rounded in character (half-way between temperaments). In a negative light: Empty and devoid of character (having no temperament). If the character is a hero, then Hot-Blooded can hold this role (due to being standard, and most other characters would recieve Choleric or Sanguine for such behaviour). The positive light is commonly reserved for secondary characters like Wise Old Mentors, because more extreme "temperamental" characters are easier to identify with and thus make more popular heroes.

A Four Temperament Ensemble will have one character to fit each one of these four temperaments. Sometimes a Five Man Band with four members will also be a Four Temperament Ensemble, but in many cases, they're mutually exclusive. For the five-temperament version, the most common match-ups for the roles would be: The Hero - Phlegmatic (type II), The Lancer - Choleric, The Big Guy - Sanguine, The Smart Guy - Melancholic, The Chick - Supine.

There is also some overlap with Power Trio scenarios: The McCoy is usually Sanguine, The Kirk is usually Phlegmatic, and The Spock is usually Choleric; in these cases, the Melancholic role will be filled by a prominent supporting character, who is still clearly outside of the triad. in Red Oni, Blue Oni, a Red Oni will likely be Choleric or Sanguine, while a Blue Oni will more likely be Melancholic or Phlegmatic. A five-temperament version could be seen as the maximum extension of a Power Trio - The Phlegmatic Type II is The Kirk, The Choleric and The Sanguine are The McCoy, the angry side and the carefree side respectively, and The Melancholic and The Supine are The Spock, the obnoxious side and the withdrawn side respectively.

They are also similar to the four Personality Blood Types, and are sometimes also a Four-Element Ensemble. See also Cast Calculus for the overarching archetypes in this and differently numbered ensembles. Here is an Image Archive for this trope.

Additionally, Pseudolonewolf (of MARDEK fame) has a page that goes into great detail on the four temperaments, here.

For another way to split up a group of four, see Four Philosophy Ensemble.

Examples of Four-Temperament Ensemble include:

Anime and Manga

  • A good example is probably Neon Genesis Evangelion. Shinji is supine, Asuka is choleric, Misato is sanguine, and Rei is melancholic.
    • You could actually also fit in Kaworu here as Plegmatic II since he seemingly has absolutely no internal turmoil whatsoever at all. Of course, he rarely appears so he doesn't completely count.
  • The girls in the dorm from Ai Kora fit into this: Tsubame is sanguine, Sakurako is choleric, Yukari is melancholic, and Kirino is (for the most part) phlegmatic.
  • The Z-fighters from Dragon Ball (excluding Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu): Goku is sanguine, Piccolo is Choleric/Melancholic, Tenshinhan is Melancholic/Phlegmatic, Vegeta is choleric, and Gohan is supine.
  • Five-temperament ensemble in Tokyo Mew Mew: Bu-ling is a sanguine Genki Girl, Ichigo is choleric (although she's not happy about leading at first, she accepts her responsibility later on), Minto is melancholic, Retasu is supine and Zakuro is phlegmatic.
  • Magical Pokaan's four girls match. Yuuma is sanguine, Pachira is choleric, Aiko is melancholic and Liru is phlegmatic.
  • One Piece's main male cast. Luffy is Sanguine, Zoro is Choleric, Sanji is Phlegmatic, Usopp is Melancholic, and Tony Tony Chopper is supine.
  • School Rumble's main girls. Tenma is sanguine, Mikoto is choleric, Eri is melancholic and Akira is phlegmatic.
    • Tenma's sister Yakumo is a textbook Supine.
  • The boys of Digimon Adventure. Tai is Choleric, TK is Sanguine, Matt is Melancholic, Izzy is Phlegmatic, and Joe is Supine.
  • The main girls of Doujin Work. Sora is sanguine, Najimi is choleric, Kaneru is melancholic and Tsuyuri is phlegmatic.
  • KamenRider Den-O's four Imagin: Ryutaros is sanguine, Momotaros is choleric, Urataros is melancholic and Kintaros is phlegmatic.
  • Saber Marionette J: Lime is sanguine, Cherry is melancholic, Bloodberry is choleric and Otaru is phlegmatic.
  • Hunter X Hunter: Gon is sanguine, Killua is choleric, Kurapika is melancholic, and Leorio is phlegmatic.
  • Saiyuki also has two. For the Sanzo party, Goku is sanguine, Sanzo is choleric, Hakkai is melancholic, and Gojyo is phlegmatic. For Kougaiji's group, Lirin is sanguine and Kougaiji is choleric. Yaone and Dokugakuji switch off between melancholic and phlegmatic, although neither of them are actually lazy.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Plus manga by Akira Himekawa takes a literal spin with this trope by dividing Link into four different entities with personality traits that reflect the color tunic each is wearing: Green is melancholic, Red is sanguine, Blue is choleric and Purple is phlegmatic.
    • The flash animations by Hadouken Dude took this to absolutely hilarious levels, with Green Link as the melancholic (experienced/exasperated/anal-retentive) one, Blue Link being the phlegmatic (calmer/rational/lazy) one, Red Link as the choleric (severe testosterone imbalance/lack of foresight) one, and Purple Link being the sanguine (along for the ride/accused of being gay because of personality and color) type.
  • Yes! Pretty Cure 5 tries to throw us off by having four temperaments among five characters--both Nozomi and Urara are sanguine. Rin is choleric, Komachi is melancholic, and Karen is phlegmatic (though not lazy by any stretch).
  • Team Kakashi in Naruto: Naruto is sanguine, Sakura is choleric, Sasuke is melancholic. Kakashi was also melancholic, as he was the "Sasuke" of his own three-man team as a kid, although he's currently phlegmatic. His partners (the "Naruto" and the "Sakura", respectively) were sanguine Obito and supine Rin.
  • Nerima Daikon Brothers: Hideki is choleric, Mako is sanguine, Ichiro is melancholic, and Team Pet Pandaikon is phlegmatic.
  • Keroro Gunsou follows the 5-humor style: Giroro is choleric, Dororo is melancholic, Kururu is phlegmatic, Tamama is sanguine, and Keroro is supine.
  • Ranma ½: Despite not always acting as a group, Ranma is sanguine, Akane is choleric, Ryoga is melancholic and Genma is phlegmatic.
  • Soul Eater: Maka is choleric, Soul is phlegmatic (Type I), Death the Kid is melancholic, Tsubaki and Liz are supine [2], Black☆Star and Patti are sanguine.
  • Gurren Lagann: (Early episodes) Simon is melancholic, Kamina is sanguine, Yoko is choleric and Leeron is phlegmatic.
  • Azumanga Daioh: Chiyo-chan is sanguine, Tomo is also sanguine (showing how two people with the same temperament can be very different), Sakaki is either melancholic or supine, Yomi is choleric, and Osaka is phlegmatic.
  • The main four of Yu Yu Hakusho, with Yusuke as Choleric, Kuwabara as Sanguine, Kurama as Phlegmatic and Hiei as Melancholic.
  • Black Lagoon: Revy is very Choleric, Rock is Melancholic, Benny is Sanguine, and Dutch is Phlegmatic.
  • Trigun more often averts this trope in favor of the Lone Hero or the Power Trio. Adding Wolfwood to the cast has a subtractive effect instead, generating a duo dynamic that leaves Meryl and Millie on the sidelines. When they participate equally the fit the four temperaments; Millie as sanguine, Meryl as choleric, Vash as melancholic (though he pretends to be sanguine) and Wolfwood as phlegmatic.
  • Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei: Kafuka is Sanguine, Nami is Phlegmatic, Chiri is Choleric, and Itoshiki-sensei is Melancholic.
    • Also in the show, Haga is sanguine, Jun is phlegmatic, Kuniya is choleric and Aoyama is melancholic.
    • Maria is Sanguine, Harumi/Kiri/Matoi/Other relatively sane characters are Phlegmatic, Kaere is Choleric, Abiru is Melancholic.
  • The four aunts in Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Natsuhi is melancholic, Rosa is sanguine, Eva is choleric, and Kyrie is phlegmatic. Probably works with the uncles and cousins too. Have to try that later.
    • There are two different ways to categorize the Higurashi girls. The first is: Sanguine - Rena, Choleric - Shion (Actually works well no matter who is put in), Supine - Satoko, Melancholic - Rika. Alternately, if you wanted to include Keiichi, the pattern shifts to Keiichi - choleric, Mion - phlegmatic, Rena - sanguine, Satoko - supine, Rika - melancholic. Alternately, if you wanted to just do the girls, just replace Keiichi with Shion.
  • The Gundam Meisters in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 fit this: Setsuna is Phlegmatic, Lockon is Sanguine, Tieria is Choleric and Allelujah is Melancholic.
  • The Le Creuset team in Gundam Seed kinda fits this: Athrun is Melancholic, Yzak is Choleric, Dearka is Phlegm and Nicol is Supine. The four main leads as well with Kira and Athrun being phlegmatic and melancholic, respectively, Cagali being choleric and Lacus being sanguine.
    • The Minerva pilots in Gundam Seed Destiny possess two temparents: Shinn is both Sanguine and Melancholic, Athrun is Choleric and Melancholic, Ray is both Melancholic and Phlegmatic and Lunamaria is Sanguine and Supine.
  • The titular band in Beck fits this even better than the Five-Man Band pattern: hot-blooded Chiba (Sanguine), charismatic and ambitious Ryuusuke (Choleric), calm and collected Taira (Melancholic) and everyman Koyuki (Supine). Only Saku's Phlegmatic nature is perhaps not so immediately obvious, but he keeps constantly worrying about his skills holding the band back, even though he's a really good drummer.
  • In the original Weiss Kreuz, Ken is sanguine, Youji is phlegmatic, Aya is choleric, and Omi is melancholic. Between the choleric personality and being the focus character, casual fans often mistake Aya for being the team leader--it's actually Omi.
  • The four ARMS teenagers in Project ARMS. Ryo is Phlegmatic, Hayato is Choleric, Takeshi is Sanguine, and Kei is Melancholic.
  • The Slayers characters fit perfectly into these categories, with the Choleric Lina, Phlegmatic Gourry, Sanguine Amelia, and Melancholic Zelgadis. Any of their secondary allies, Sylphiel in particular, also fit into the Supine teperament without utilizing a type II Phlegmatic.
  • K-On!! has a slight variation: Yui is sanguine/phlegmatic, Mio is supine, Ritsu is sanguine/choleric and Mugi is melancholic.
  • Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: Sakura/Fay = Sanguine; Syaoran = Melancholic; Kurogane = Choleric
  • Although there are six main characters, this can work for Et Cetera, too. Mingchao is Sanguine, Fino is Choleric, Benkate is Melancholic, Baskerville is Phlegmatic, Alternate is Supine, and Yaghi is 5th temperament Phlegmatic. Mingchao can also be seen as Melancholic while Benkate is Sanguine.
  • Lucky Star: Konata is Sanguine, Kagami is Choleric, Miyuki is Melancholic, and Tsukasa is Supine (None of the main characters qualify as either definition of Phlegmatic).

  • The four mages introduced in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Genki Girl Pollyanna Subaru is Sanguine, natural leader (former) Tsundere Teana is Choleric, knight-in-training Erio is Melancholic, and Caro is Phlegmatic. The last two's personalities actually caused a bit of family drama for their also Melancohlic adopted mother in the second StrikerS Sound Stage, since their combined introvertedness caused some communication problems.
    • Similarly, Hayate's four knights. Vita is choleric, Signum is melancholic, Zafira is phlegmatic, and Shamal is sanguine.

    • Sanguine: Uzas. His emotions are all or nothing; he's almost universally violent, irritated or sullen when he isn't an unreadable shell. Thinks only of himself, which is how he became corrupt in the first place. He himself admits he all but runs on a slow, seething rage.
    • Choleric: Xarl. Cynic, chronic complainer, suspicious pessimist, and yet somehow a very capable Lancer for Talos. Throws his whole life into the sword and it shows in every sense of the word.
    • Melancholic: Talos. His romanticism of his Legion's past and the power his prophetic abilities have over his life have left him worn thin all around. Known to brood over both. His stubbornness won't let him put anything less than his heart and soul into what he does however, and it's nearly killed him before.

This is something that makes the show very different from others: the leader of these True Companions is not the choleric character, but the melancholic one! True, Sarah Jane is a little bit choleric at times (coz she's their leader) but she's quiet and independent, and completely occupied with all that's wrong in the world. Not to mention the shedload of melancholic moods she goes through due to all the stuff that happens to her in each series (do the writers hate her?). Effectively making this team leader the Woobie.
