Characters of Adventure Time

Finn the Human

" I'll slay anything that's evil. That's my deal."

The intrepid, eponymous human boy. Hyperactive with a love of adventure and good deeds. That thing on his head is actually a hat. Originally 12 years old, turned 13 in the episode "Mystery Train".

Voiced by: Zach Shada in the 2006 pilot, Jeremy Shada in the series

  • Auto-Tune: Seems to be his natural singing voice after he swallows a tiny computer immediately prior to "The Jiggler".
  • Awesome Backpack: His big, green, circular backpack.
  • Badass:
  • Berserk Button: Unsuprisingly, he doesn't react well to Jake being threatened.
    • In "Evicted", Marceline kind of killed Jake for a minute. Finn's reaction was... not pretty.
    • In "To Cut a Woman's Hair", the witch merely uses Jake as a cushion (albeit in the context of Finn's requiring someone to be in "danger" in order to help her), and Finn charges.
    • Finn doesn't seem to take it well when someone even tries to come between he and Jake's friendship. Just ask Tiffany.
    • If you have a child, don't reject it. He's got issues with that sort of thing.

Finn: Mamas are supposed to love babies! THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO LOVE BABIES!

    • When Jake is transformed into a lumpy space guy.

I f-f-f... AAAAHHHHHH I'LL KILL YOU LUMPY SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!!!!!!

  • Berserker Rage: See above.
  • Blood Knight: He may be in it mostly to slay evil, but there's no denying that he really likes fighting for its own sake. When he wins the Fight King's "favor", he really hams it up.
  • Bodyguard Crush: On Princess Bubblegum.
  • Book Dumb: Finn is terrible at math.
  • Broken Ace: Multiple times.
  • Character Development: He's getting more aware when it comes to romance, and he's also getting less and less silly and more mature as the show goes on. More complex aspects of his personality are developed slowly, so he often comes off as a Static Character. The show has celebrated his 13th birthday in what is likely a case of Real Life Writes the Plot since Jeremy Shada's voice has noticeably deepened.
    • And to think, Finn used to be this kid:

Jake: Looks like you're dealing with some new emotions that you don't understand... like jealousy.
Finn: BLAAAAAARGH!!

Jake: Look at all this grave booty! CHA-CHING!
Finn: Jake! You LOOTED? That's bad, man!
Jake: Oh... I didn't know it was wrong...

Finn: (sigh) Come on, let's put all of this back.

Jake: What?! All of it?!

Finn: Yes, Jake.

Finn: That one's going in the vault. Aaaaaaand... it's gone.

  • Hot-Blooded
  • I Am Not Weasel: Flame Princess comes to the conclusion that he must be a Water Elemental due to him crying each time she's seen him and him repeatedly hurting her without realizing it.
  • Idiot Hero:

Why is Finn missing so many teeth?
He bites trees and rocks and stuff. He's stupid.

    • Which makes it that much more interesting when his brain works perfectly, like in "Morituri Te Salutamus".
    • As shown in "The New Frontier", Finn occasionally forgets how the sun works, and is seemingly floored when Jake re-explains it to him.
  • I Gave My Word: Finn basically lives by this. Especially after the events of "Slumber Party Panic".
  • Important Haircut
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: With paper airplanes. Pity that he overestimates his own ability in this area.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: To the extent that he tries to beat his purity into others.
  • Kid Hero
  • Large Ham: Not just large, massive. He competes with a World of Ham and manages the impressive feat of being one of, if not the hammiest ham in the land of Ooo.
  • Last of His Kind: According to Word of God, Finn thinks he's one of these. We certainly haven't been shown another normal human yet. We thought we did, but they turned out to be Fish People.
    • Whether or not Susan is human is left up in the air, as she never takes off her hat.
    • In "Beautopia", it's more or less confirmed that she's human.
    • Another long time member of the cast at least used to be human.
  • Limited Wardrobe
  • Meaningful Name: "Finn" means "fair-haired". He's blond.
  • Muggle Best Friend/Morality Pet to anything that isn't completely evil. Shades towards The Messiah
    • Princess Bubblegum tends to show off her creations to him. (She's just as likely to use her own half-baked creation, but perhaps this is just safety testing.)
    • Marceline trusted only Finn with her Fries song.
    • Heck even the Ice King seeks Finn out when he wants somebody to chat to.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: "ALGEBRAIC!"
    • "Mathematical!"
    • His hat.
  • Nice Guy
  • Nice Hat: He apparently skinned a bear to make it. As a baby.

Finn: My... hat... is... AWESOME!!!

  • The Noseless
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Averted. In fact, he grows up in real-time! (He ages every year, according to Word of God.)
  • The Paragon: In "Freak City", Finn refuses to let any of the freaks lay down and let life kick them around. So instead, Finn kicks them around until they decide to stand up for themselves.
  • Parental Abandonment: Not only was had he lost his birth-parents from babyhood, it is heavily implied that his foster-parents, Joshua and Margaret, are also dead, leaving him with only Jake at 12.
  • Parenthetical Swearing: He loves this trope.

"Holy stuff!"
"What the jug is that?
"Dump that mess!
"Math this..."

"I'm weddy for the wedding!"
(pushing a zombie into the ground) "You're grounded, mister!"
(blasting a pig with ice cream) "FREEZE TO MEET YOU!!"

  • Rapunzel Hair
  • Real Men Wear Pink: For example when he spends the night with the Ice King in "Thank You".
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Has made up songs on the spot on several occasions, just for the heck of it. With his singing voice the effect is pretty rad.
  • Samaritan Syndrome: In "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain", Finn reveals his underlying drive to help everyone and everything with their problems because when he was a baby, he once went 'boom-boom' on a leaf and got stuck to it, and went unaided for hours.
    • More to the point, he went unaided until Jake's parents found him (and eventually adopted him). Finn helps people because someone helped him once.
    • Subverted on at least one occasion, where he mentions that he probably should help the Ice King, but he's too inexperienced and has no clue how to deal with the Ice King's issues. So he beats him up.
  • Screaming Warrior
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Regarding Princess Bubblegum. Jake even calls her his ex at one point.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Throughout the series, he sings with an auto-tuned voice that supposedly comes from a tiny computer he swallowed at some earlier point. Subverted in "What Was Missing", where he sings a heartfelt song to (and about) his True Companions Jake, Bubblegum and Marceline.
  • The Sleepless: "Justice never sleeps!"
    • Aaand yet he is seen more than once sleeping on his watch.
  • Summon Magic: It takes him many hours to summon his spirit animals in Still, but at least he gets a whole bunch of them and they're rather badass, for their species.
    • Hunson is quicker to summon, but his allegiance remains in doubt.
  • Tagalong Kid: In "What Was Missing", Finn said that he thought this trope was the way the others saw him. An odd example, as he's arguably more proactive and competent than nearly everyone else in Ooo most of the time.

Finn: Do you look down on me cuz I'm younger?

PB: You blew it, Finn! With this! [Shows bubble-blowing device]
Finn: Then I'll kill it with this!

  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's terrified of the ocean and only the ocean—not rivers, lakes, or puddles. He is also afraid of the body of water in question whether he consciously knows it's the ocean or not.
  • Wild Child: "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain" reveals Finn was orphaned as a baby and taken in by Jake's parents.
    • Raised by Wolves: To the extent that he calls dogs Brother, Mother and Father without a hint of irony.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: After putting on the Glasses of Nerdicon.
    • Any time he gets any sort of artifact of power it will quickly be taken away from him ("Wizard", "Daddy's Little Monster", etc).
  • Zany Scheme: One day he may be the master of these, in the meantime he gets egg on his face (or Marceline's kitchen floor). Simply lifting Treetrunks is insufficient. Instead he has to out on thick layers of makeup first. And so on.

Fionna

"A crystal sword! I'm all about swords! How did you know?"

Finn's Gender Flip counterpart who is considerably more level-headed than he is. She still manages to have a thirst for adventure, however. Appears in "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake".

Voiced by: Madeline Martin

Jake the Dog

"Fine, it's fine. Everything's gonna be fine. It's fine!"

Finn's chummy, size-shifting bulldog friend (not pet) and foster-brother. He is more laid back than Finn, but also enjoys adventure. He sometimes gives Finn brotherly advice, but it is not often helpful.

Voiced by: John Dimaggio

Jake: (giving his sandwich to BMO) Here, BMO, have my sandwich. I'm gonna look for... (looks at the ground, gasps) Oh my gosh! A dancing bug!

"Trust me, dude, I'm smarter than everyone."

Cake

"Catnip! Sweet babies!"

Jake's Gender Flip counterpart (who is a cat) and Fionna's adoptive sister. Has the same stretching powers Jake does. Appears in "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake".

Voiced by: Roz Ryan

Princess Bubblegum

"Hurry, sweet citizens..."

The teenaged princess and current ruler of the Candy Kingdom. She cares deeply about her citizens. She's also a giant nerd, said to engage in "every branch of geekdom", but not (as far as we can tell) in the Cosplay Otaku Girl way—she's more of a math and science whiz. She's also a hybrid of human DNA and bubblegum DNA (which Finn finds a-TRACTT-ive~!), despite bubblegum not having DNA, hence her name. She's friends with Finn, who seems to have a crush on her (however much he tries to deny it), but we don't know if the feelings are mutual yet. Although she looks sweet, and is, in general, rather nice, she is actually quite quick to anger, and her wrath is best avoided. She also speaks German, apparently. The second season reveals her first name is Bonnibel.

Voiced by: Paige Moss in the 2006 pilot, Hynden Walch in the series

Prince Gumball

"Heck yes, as my pal!"

Princess Bubblegum's Gender Flip counterpart. Appears in "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake".

Voiced by: Neil Patrick Harris

Lady Rainicorn

"이게 더 좋아?" [1]

An odd-looking but beautiful, flying half-rainbow-half-unicorn creature. Also Jake's girlfriend. She only speaks Korean, which Jake, but not Finn, understands.

Voiced by: Dee Bradley Baker in the 2006 pilot, Niki Yang in the series

Lord Monochromicorn

• • • ••-• -- [2]

Lady Rainicorn's Gender Flip counterpart and Prince Gumball's loyal companion. In a relationship with Cake.

BMO

"Who wants to play video games?"

BMO, pronounced Beemo, is Finn and Jake's cute Animate Inanimate Video Game system. A bit of a rebel, Beemo sometimes enjoys turning up his volume too loud and running out of batteries during a game. Looks like cross between a Game Boy, Macintosh and a Vectrex.

Voiced by: Niki Yang

Lumpy Space Princess

"Whatever!"

A purple, floating Lumpy-thing with a star on her head and a pushy attitude. Also, she's apparently Latina.

Voiced by: Pendelton Ward

LSP: MY HEART HURTS BECAUSE I FELL OUT OF LOVE!!

  • Precocious Crush: Inverted. She's 15, but has a crush on 13-year-old Finn.
  • The Runaway: Sometime before "To Cut a Woman's Hair", she ran away into the forest and still lives there as of "Heat Signature". She returns home in "The Monster".
  • Silicon-Based Life: Lumpy Space people are made of irradiated stardust.
  • Spear Counterpart: Lumpy Space Prince.
  • Valley Girl: And with a deep, grunting valley girl accent at that. It doesn't help that all of the Lumpy Space people speak like that.

Marceline

"Dang, man, I didn't think you'd ever catch on!"

The queen of the vampires (or so she says). Known to be extremely unempathetic but never cruel, simply doing whatever she pleases even at the expense of others. Apparently was alive at the time of the apocalyptic 'mushroom war'. Subject to a lot of fan "attention", for whatever reason; became extremely popular while only appearing twice in the first season, not counting the opening credits and brief cameos. Usually decked out in punk-rock apparel. She generally tries to be a cool and rather unfeeling, she harbors a very broken spirit due to loneliness in living forever, among other things. Whenever her more sensitive or emotional side is shown, she gets angry. In the fourth season, it was revealed she has the surname Abadeer.

Voiced by: Olivia Olson

  • Affably Evil: When she was an antagonist (which last for about one episode, not counting her trickery in "Henchman"); since then she's settled into a more Chaotic Neutral type of personality with a general Lack of Empathy.
    • She's more Affably Amoral than anything.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Finn and Jake sometimes call her "Marcie". Ash calls her "Mar-mar".
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: It's suggested because her father is evil incarnate.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Does this all the time, but thus far never in her Cute Monster Girl look; she prefers scaling herself up into monstrous forms for combat purposes. See One-Winged Angel below.
  • Bat Out of Hell: Frequently turns into a odd-looking bat when she wants to hide, and she has a giant version that she assumed in her first appearance.
  • Berserk Button: Never steal her axe-bass. "What Was Missing" suggests that calling attention to her more sensitive side is another button for her. (As she is the Beauty in the Beauty, Brains, and Brawn trio with Finn and PB, she has a natural tendency to expose this too-sensitive side of herself, so she doesn't have many friends. But those she does, she holds quite dear indeed.)
  • Big Badass Wolf: Turned into a grotesque one via Nightmare Face in "Henchman" to mess with Jake.
  • Blood Knight: Possibly. She did give Finn and Jake their house back mainly because Finn gave her a good fight, and in "Go with Me", she seems to approve of Finn's idea of fun centering around wrestling and fighting.
  • Breakout Character: She's practically one of the main cast now, though her major appearances are fairly infrequent.
  • Broken Bird: She's had a very harsh life, been betrayed by a lot of people, and scares people away out of fear of it happening again.
  • The Cameo: Happens in "The Duke" for a second near the end, has a non-speaking role in "Video Makers", and in "Power Animal" at the party in the beginning.
  • Characterization Marches On
  • Combat Sadomasochist: A minor case.

"Yeah, it hurts, but I kinda like it. I reminds me of when I'd scrape my knees up as a kid, and my mom would patch me up. You know what I'm sayin'?"

  • Creepy Child: As a child, and spoken to her teddy bear as she was fixing it: "I'm hurting you because I love you." What really drives it home is that she's completely unfazed at the Scenery Gorn that the Mushroom War has brought.
  • Creepy Good: She may be an ally, but Finn and Jake are still terrified of her.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Though it's fairly clear that her entire mouth is full of sharp teeth.
  • Cute Monster Girl: In her normal form.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Sure, she's a Vampire Queen responsible for kicking Finn and Jake out of their house (although she does return it), but for the most part, she just wants to jam on her axe and record albums with friends.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Everybody she's ever loved has betrayed Marceline. First her mother passed away, then her dad ate her french fries and finally her boyfriend Ash sold her teddy bear. So these days she scares people away so they won't hurt her. Damn, she's wimpy.
  • Everything's Squishier with Cephalopods: She has the ability to turn into a giant tentacle monster. As if she didn't cater to ENOUGH fetishes. She did it in order to dissaude Finn from asking her out before realizing that he wasn't interested in a date.
  • Flight
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Depends how she sees you. She can be your best friend or worst enemy.
  • Fur and Loathing: The dress she wears in "Henchman" is made from a Whywolf. "Marceline's Closet" shows that she also has a large fur-lined coat, with the head and claws built into it.
  • Giant Flyer: Again, see One-Winged Angel below.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: If she doesn't want to kill you with her powers of vampirism, she could use her demonic axe bass.
  • God Save Us From the Queen: Played in and eventually subverted.
  • Good All Along: Sort of (see below).
  • Heel Face Turn: In her original appearance, she comes in the middle of the night and kicks Finn and Jake out of their own house, leaving them out in the open trying to find a place to live. When they finally do find a place, it just so happened to have been Marceline's... and so she almost kills Finn and Jake, but in the end, gives them their house back. Second appearance, and Finn and Jake still consider her an enemy. Finn unwillingly becomes her accomplice to her many dark deeds that all turn out Double Subverted. The last scene shows that Finn and Marceline have gained some trust for each other. Third appearance, Finn and Marceline spend the entire episode TOGETHER, trying to get her soul-sucking father back into the Nightosphere. What's next, Go-Karting with Bowser?
    • Does Going To The Movies With Bowser count?
    • She's even gone so far as to show genuine concern and even go out of her way to save Finn and Jake in at least one situation where their lives were put in danger.
    • It's been hinted that her rebellion against the forces of evil was triggered a long time ago when her father lost her trust when he ate her fries, and that she's acted like a monster since to protect those who might care about her from her own nature. Finn has yet to win the battle of showing her that she does have the self-control to be safe to love, but she does hang out with a much wider crowd these days.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Extremely strongly implied; in "What Was Missing", the Door Lord didn't actually steal anything from her, she just wanted to hang out with her friends and gets intensely embarrased when this is pointed out. In "Memory of a Memory", it's shown that she was a borderline Extreme Doormat when it came to her Bastard Boyfriend Ash until he sold her only fond childhood treasure for an entirely pointless reason.
    • If you don't take it as a expression of Les Yay, Marceline's song to Bubblegum can be considered an expression of this; she doesn't even remember why Bubblegum is angry at her and feels she shouldn't have to apologize, but implies she still wants to.
    • She outright admits that she hides tears because she has no friends in "Marceline's Closet".
  • Immortal Immaturity: She's been around for at least a thousand years, but she's really not too much more mature than Finn himself is. At times, he's even more mature than her.
  • Immortality: She's over a thousand years old and hasn't changed much aside from a degree of aging, and has to have this because her ex-boyfriend Ash doesn't like mortals. It's unclear what type she is: she has been shown to age, but she is a thousand years old and still looks like she's in her twenties. So either she got bitten and acquired Undying Immortality (Type II) after her teen years (she doesn't have a bite mark as a child or teenager), or her age rate is just extremely slow. Let's just say she's Type V.
  • Instrument of Murder: She turned the family axe into a bass guitar.
  • Invisibility
  • It Amused Me: This is her reason for pretty much everything she does, Jerkassy or not.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Seemed to be a straight-up Jerkass in her introduction episode, and then in "Henchman", it was revealed that she's actually a pretty cool chick who enjoys screwing with people but never actually hurts them, and by the end of the episode, she and Finn seem to have struck up a friendship, and though Jake presumably still hated/was totally terrified of her, he seems to have warmed up to her to the point of being worried about her when told she was in danger. Since then, she's pretty much dropped pretensions towards straight-up Jerkassery.
    • "Heat Signature" provides a good example of this; she pranks Finn and Jake into believing that they're vampires and fools them into doing various embarrassing things, but draws the line at her old ghost gang brutally kicking them for no reason and goes berserk when Finn and Jake are tricked into nearly jumping to their deaths.
  • Just Friends: With Finn. "Go with Me" confirms that neither of them have feelings for each other that way, but it hasn't stopped shippers.
  • "Just Joking" Justification
  • Klingon Promotion: She became the Vampire Queen by killing the Vampire King.
  • The Ladette: Clearly demonstrated (in a kid-friendly way) through her willingness to fight everyone and everything, in the same way that Finn does. Not to mention, several episodes clearly demonstrate her lack of appreciation for hygiene, whether it be her picking her nose, not washing her hands, or remarking that her armpits stink.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: Of the two immortal characters, she's the one that has the most fun.
  • Necromancer: "Corpses buried in mud that's black, from death I command you to come BACK!" She did it to throw a party.
  • Nightmare Face: Marceline can do this voluntarily and to great effect. In "Henchman", she just does it for the reaction on Jake's face, as he is still afraid of vampires. The Adventure Time Team's portion of Frederator blog has a small collection of the faces she made throughout the episode.
  • The Noseless: Like the other humanoids. Though she can morph a nose when she wants to smell something or pick it.
  • Not So Stoic: Under her cool and trickster-like demeanor lies a sensitive girl that will cry easily if the right buttons are pushed. (Pissing her off is still a no-no.)
  • Odd Friendship: With Finn, which doubles as an extreme form of an Intergenerational Friendship. Later on, she's befriended Jake (though she likes to scare him) and appears to have had one with Bubblegum in the past, though Finn seems to have helped her and Bubblegum patch things up.
  • Older Than They Look: She appears to be somewhere around PB's age, but she is really a thousand.
  • One-Winged Angel: She often employs this in a serious fight (or when she's trying to scare people), and one of the most memorable is a giant, bat-like creature.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Marceline claims that she sometimes drinks blood, but only because it's red, and she mainly "eats" shades of red. Sunlight and garlic still hurt her, though, though neither are apparently fatal. It's unclear whether her many abilities are also linked to her vampirism or unique to herself (possibly due to her dad being a demon).
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: A lot of this is diverted towards her. Arguably, even more of this is directed towards her Gender Flip counterpart Marshall Lee.
  • Pointy Ears
  • The Quincy Punk: Slightly; she's a wild and reckless sort of person, but Ooo in general doesn't seem to find her particularly dangerous. She seems to like the aesthetic more than anything.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: The show reveals she is over a thousand years old. However, her childhood is still After the End, if less so than the current show. It's unclear whether she lived through the Mushroom War or directly afterwards.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Does this when she gets upset. Usually an extremely bad sign for whomever made her upset.
  • Sad Clown: Unfortunately, she sings from the soul and gets upset when she notices she's let her defenses down.
    • "How can- anyone relate to me? When they cannot see what I see- My vampire eyes see... only blood red- skies. Blood red skies make tears inside that I always hide."
  • Shiny Midnight Black
  • Spear Counterpart: Marshall Lee.
  • Sudden Anatomy: In "Marceline's Closet", she grows a pair of bat-like nostrils when trying to sniff out Finn and Jake.
  • Telekinesis
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Princess Bubblegum's Girly Girl.
  • The Trickster: Generally only in the sense of the way she interacts with people. When she actually gets into a combat-type situation, she prefers a more upfront approach.
  • Troll: Finds a lot of joy in screwing with people in general and Finn in particular, though she seems to draw her limits at actual physical harm, at least lately.
  • Tsundere: Shows quite a few signs of being one to her friends in general, and very strongly suggested to be one in "What Was Missing".
  • The Undead
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: How many outfits has she worn now? Notably, since she had a different outfit for each of her appearances, she was the first character to avert Limited Wardrobe.
  • Vampire Monarch: Specifically, she's the Vampire Queen.
  • The Vampire That Doesn't Do Anything: She introduces herself as the vampire queen in "Evicted!", and it's never mentioned again.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: She drinks blood if provoked, but she mostly just drains the color from red objects. Sometimes the objects are fine afterwards, sometimes they seem shriveled up.
  • Visual Pun: Her bass is an axe.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Has a habit of going from her cute normal form to very grotesque monster forms and back again at the drop of a hat. Her second episode really plays this up.
  • Weakened by the Light
  • Well, Excuse Me, Princess!: She kinda implied this regarding her relationship with Princess Bubblegum in her song in "What Was Missing". "Sorry I don't treat you like a goddess", indeed.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous?: "Daddy, why did you eat my fries? I bought them, and they were mine..."
    • Though it seems more justified after one has watched "Memory of a Memory".
    • Eating her fries was possibly just another indication that her father never took her thoughts or feelings into consideration, and that taking something that belonged to her, which at this point happened to be something completely trivial, was the final straw.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: She implies this in her Journal Song:

Marceline: (singing) They don't know what it's like to live forever and forget who they even are...

Marshall Lee

Spear Counterpart to Marceline, presumably the Vampire King. Appears in "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake" in a nonspeaking cameo.

Ice King

"I only try to kill you 'cause you're PRINCESS-BLOCKING ME ALL THE TIME."

An unruly monarch from the Ice Kingdom. He can be considered one of the main villains of the show, constantly stealing princesses so he can marry them.

In truth, these are but the remnants of a pre-apocalypse antique merchant once named Simon Petrikov, before he was possessed and transformed by the arcane forces of ice and snow within a crown he bought. The subsequent bouts of madness estranged him from his beloved fiance, Betty, and his nickname for her, "princess", was warped by time and insanity into his compulsion to kidnap and marry princesses in present day Land of Ooo.

Voiced by: John Kassir in the 2006 pilot, Tom Kenny in the series

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To the extreme, in both the romantic and platonic senses.
  • Adult Fear: Going insane and feeling your mind slip away, in addition to driving away your loved ones.
  • Amulet of Concentrated Awesome: If he loses his crown, he loses all his powers.
    • Artifact of Doom: Revealed to be the cause of his insanity and why he's the way he is.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: His entire purpose in life. He just wants to be Happily Married! Obviously kidnapping princesses and marrying them by force is the only way to make that beautiful dream happen!
  • Anti-Villain: Type II.
  • Apocalyptic Log: A series of video tapes show him going from a normal man named Simon, to the Ice King he is now.
  • ...And Show It to You: It turns out that Ricardio is the result of Ice King accidentally doing this to himself as the result of a botched spell.
  • Bandage Hunk: "What is Life?" demonstrates that his underwear is just some gauze.
  • Beat Still My Heart: Ricardio's existence.
  • Big Bad: He's pretty much the only recurring villain in the show's first two seasons.
  • Blank White Eyes
  • Blessed with Suck/Cursed with Awesome: As we learn in "Holly Jolly Secrets", his ice powers helped him survive the nuclear winter, but at the cost of his sanity and humanity, and he outlived the only woman he ever loved.
  • Body Horror: He temporarily removed his own heart. And gave it life as Ricardio. On another note, during the process that turned him into the Ice King, his skin turned pale blue and appeared frostbitten when his body temperature had dropped to only 80 degrees (F). Presumably he got even colder, as he's fine going barefoot in the snow.
  • Bow Ties Are Cool: Simon was seen wearing one in the tapes.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Everything about him in "Holly Jolly Secrets".
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Though Deconstructed when it's shown that Simon Petrikov was terrified of losing his mind. The Ice King is less than a shadow of the dignified antiquarian he once was, no longer caring that he's gone insane.
  • Cool Old Guy: Sort of. He has a wacky sense of humor, plays on a drum kit and has a bunch of ninja stuff.
  • Cry for the Devil: It's easy to feel sorry for the poor guy at times, especially after we learn his Freudian Excuse.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Hitman" gives him the most amount of focus compared to any other episode. "Holly Jolly Secrets" involves his Origin Story, among other things.
  • Dirty Old Man: Justified, actually. He goes after young princesses because his lost love Betty was young when he last saw her, and his own immortality and insanity began when he was young (albeit artificially aged). Unjustified with him wanting to date Fionna.
    • Granted, he doesn't seem to think he's old.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Ice Queen.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: Even if he's standing in snow.
  • Elderly Immortal
  • Elemental Powers
    • An Ice King: Not a NICE king.
    • Can summon limited autonomy Snowlems, but the relationship to the Type I Snowlems of his kingdom are unclear.
    • Blow You Away
  • Enemy Mine: Against the Lich.
  • Enemy Summoner: As seen in "Prisoners of Love".
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Decides to stop pursuing Princess Bubblegum after it's pointed out that he's old and she's been turned into a thirteen year old.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold
  • Evil Old Folks
  • Evil Overlord: Has the spiky crown, Faceless Goons (The most evil creature in Ooo is a Penguin, and he's got Yeti and Type I Snowlems), dark magic, etc. etc.
    • Every typical aspect of the trope is present, so it is of course totally subverted.
  • Flight: Via his beard.
  • Forgetful Jones
  • Freudian Excuse: His desire to kidnap princesses is revealed to be a degenerated desire to see his fiance Betty again. Whom he referred to as "his princess".
  • Friendly Enemy
    • Cranked up to Foe Yay with his fanfic.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Was just a normal human with aspirations to become an antiquarian, until he found his crown.
  • Gag Nose: Somewhat odd, given he didn't have one as a human.
  • Hearing Voices: The insane variation; caused by his crown.
  • Ignored Epiphany: When he gets knocked out while fighting Finn, the Cosmic Owl appears and attempts to tell him he's a sociopath. His response is to call the Cosmic Owl a big nerd, after which he is tickled into consciousness by penguins.
  • Immortality Begins At Sixty: A variation; the crown artificially aged Simon rapidly, but thereafter he doesn't seem to have changed much over the course of the hundreds of years he's been alive.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: He's often painted this way, but then often established as a Psychopathic Manchild immediately thereafter.
  • The Insomniac: Implied in "The Eyes".
  • I Was Quite the Looker: Simon was fairly good looking; at least enough to be depicted with the same Generic Cuteness as most other characters (as opposed to Ice King's Gonk big nose and aged appearance).
    • The Ice King himself however doesn't seem to think so- he's too embarrassed to let others find out that he used to wear glasses.
  • Jerkass A sympathetic example. He's actually a nice guy, but he DOES have the tendency to get into rather violent fights with a 14 year old boy and a dog, and he regularly kidnaps and harasses princesses, blatantly ignoring their distaste and cries for help.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: See Took a Level In Kindness below.
  • Limited Wardrobe
  • Literal-Minded: Hires a hitman against Finn and Jake, thinking he is literally going to hit them, not kill them!
  • Ninja: He has a collection of ice kunai, shurikens, and a book on ice-themed ninjutsu.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: On the tapes chronicling Simon's descent into Ice Wizardry, it is shown that the initial transformation was accompanied by the rapid formation of an extremely violent blizzard. It's also possible that this is instead the result of a nuclear winter, presumably from the Mushroom War, though that would be quite a coincidence.
    • While the Ice Kingdom currently covers only a small part of Ooo centered on his cave, there are fjords and what appear to be moraine islands around the entire island.
  • Power Born of Madness
  • Prehensile Hair: He can fly with his beard, and he's got no way of flying without it.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: He was a part of pre-fall mankind so this makes him the oldest member of the regular cast.
  • Redemption Promotion: While he hasn't completely pulled a Heel Face Turn yet, he is far more effective when helping Finn and Jake than fighting them. He even froze the Lich solid after everything else had failed to beat him.
  • Sanity Slippage: The crown causes this to happen to him, progressively warping him into the Ice King.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Likes to vocalize the "Zap!" sound his ice powers make.
  • The So-Called Coward: While he's been shown to be easily horrified by Eldritch Abominations, and Word of God stated that he'd run from the Lich, he actually assisted Finn against him willingly to save Princess Bubblegum.
  • The Sociopath: A rare sympathetic version, as his inability to relate to other people causes him nothing but misery. He actively tries to overcome it, but his worldview is so skewed that his attempts only result in (often hilarious) failure.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: The Ooo version of Christmas was pretty much created by Finn and Jake solely due to this trope.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Starting Season 3.
  • Took a Level In Kindness: In "Hitman", when he saved Finn and Jake's lives three times.
  • Tragic Villain: In a pre-apocalypse Earth, an intelligent, mild mannered antique dealer named Simon Petrikov procured an ancient magic Scandinavian crown. After putting it on in jest, the Crown seized his mind and began altering his body, giving him power over ice. The process, the constant spectres and visions drove him utterly, completely mad, into our Psychopathic Manchild Ice King. The Ice King no longer seems to understand what's happened to him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In "Mortal Folly", his pestering of Finn and Jake for their approval to court Princess Bubblegum ruins their best shot at destroying the Lich, who after regaining his power via the Well of Power, destroys the Gauntlet once used to destroy him that Finn himself was about to use. After the Lich is destroyed, the Ice King screws up again by dropping the Princess into the well, which results in the latter being possessed by the Lich, and later, being reduced to a 13-year-old after pieces of her are still missing. Which results in Earl of Lemongrab dropping in to assume a tyrannical rule over Ooo. Whew. At least the latter lasted only one episode.
  • Villainous Rescue: Assists Finn and Jake against the Lich to save Princess Bubblegum.
  • Was Once a Man: He used to be a (human) artifact collector named Simon Petrikov, then he started wearing his crown, which drove him insane and gave him powers over ice.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Yep, powerful and crazy. And not only was he not always either of those, he achieved both conditions at the same time by the same process.
  • Wizard Beard
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: If more likely to freeze them.
  • Yandere: A rare male example.

Ice Queen

Ice King's Gender Flip, who also manages to look thirty years younger than him. Instead of the trademark crown, she wears a tiara instead. Appears in "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake".

The Lich

I am beyond strength. I am, the End
You... You messed Billy up! You just wanna mess me all up! Mess everyone up!
—Finn

An undead sorcerer who is supposedly Ooo's greatest evil. He has an army of the living dead and vast magical powers. He was defeated and sealed away in amber inside of a great tree by the legendary hero Billy. Not a funny character at all. Originally called the Lich King, renamed to avoid confusion with that other guy.

Voiced by: Ron Perlman and - when possessing Princess Bubblegum - by Kevin Michael Richardson.

  • Army of the Dead: The Lich is said to command these.
  • Badass Long Hair: As revealed in the comic.
  • Badass Long Robe
  • Bag of Holding: Gets his hands on one in the comic, his plan being to suck up the entire land of Ooo then throw the bag into the sun.
  • Bigger Bad: Is the most powerful and evil villain in the show, but due to being sealed in an amber prison inside a great tree, he didn't have a huge role up until the season 2 finale.
  • Body Surf: Finn destroys his real body, so his soul transfers into Princess Bubblegum. After he's defeated again, he transfers again into the Snail. However, given the Lich is still in the body of the Snail, it seems he's stuck in his body until it's destroyed.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: First appeared in the season 1 finale for about a second in Billy's song, becomes the Big Bad of the second season finale.
  • Compelling Voice
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: The reason for It Only Works Once. It's not that he becomes immune to whatever defeated him, he just makes sure to prevent prior tactics from being used on him again. Billy's gauntlet was used to defeat him before, so one of the first things he does is destroy it before Finn could effectively use it against him. When Finn defeated him using The Power of Love channeled through his sweater, the next time Finn tries using it, the Lich punches him halfway across the Candy Kingdom before he can get close enough to use it on him. He was also smart enough to run from Finn until he had the chance to regain his powers. Finn interrupted him while he was regaining his strength, but he still got enough back to destroy Billy's gauntlet.
  • Dark Is Evil: AND HOW!
  • The Dreaded: According to Word of God, he's so terrifying that even the Ice King and Marceline will run in terror of him. Princess Bubblegum's reaction to the possibility he's returning in the preview seems to further support this.
    • It winds up being partially averted in the actual episode, as although Princess Bubblegum does truly fear him (Marceline does not even appear), Ice King seems to be completely clueless about the Lich due to his Cloudcuckoolander nature (being more concerned with holes), and he actually eagerly volunteers to help fight the Lich later on.
    • The Ice King wasn't exactly clueless about the Lich. Until he got down the hole he'd neither seen nor been outright told about The Lich being freed, and as he admits later he wasn't sure if what Finn was fighting was really there since he sees alot of strange things thanks to his "Wizard Eyes". Had PB's life not been on the line he likely would have run, as he's done so when faced with Eldritch Abominations before.
  • Dead Serious: As stated in this early sketch, THE LICH KING IS NOT FUNNY. At no point does he ever intentionally try to be funny or goofy in any way, making him stand out amongst the otherwise wacky cast.
    • Though there was that time he shushed Finn, which is either well timed humour or just downright unnerving.
  • Evil Is Burning Hot: He shoots green fire.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: "Aren't you cold, Finn?"
  • Evil Laughter: Suddenly breaks into a sudden fit of laughter just seconds before Finn destroys his original body.
  • Evil Sorcerer
  • Flight
  • Glowing Eyelights of Undeath: He and anyone he's controlling have these.
  • Hero-Killer: He killed Billy
  • Immortality: Appears to have this, a combination of types four and five, due to being a Lich and his habit of Body Surfing. Word of God has said that he hasn't beaten death but is cheating him at every turn.
  • It Only Works Once: Happens twice; Billy's Gauntlet was supposed to be needed to kill The Lich since it worked before. Destroying it is among the first things he does, before even fully recovering. Attacking him with The Power of Love didn't work out so well the second time either. It's not so much that whatever he gets hit with won't work on him again, he just has whiplash-quick reflexes and really long arms.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Oh hell yes. The first thing you'll notice about him is that unlike the other villians in this show, he has no humorous quirks that can make him any less terrifying.
  • Mind Rape: Has this ability if one isn't wearing the proper magical protection or The Power of Love.
  • Necromancer: Well, he is a lich.
  • Night of the Living Mooks: Has an army of the living dead.
  • Nightmare Face
  • Obviously Evil
  • Omnicidal Maniac: According to Princess Bubblegum, his goal is to destroy life.
  • One-Winged Angel: In Princess Bubblegum's body, he tricks Finn into getting him the things he needs to fully regain his powers and turns into a gigantic monster that beats the stuffing out of Finn, the Gumball Guardians protecting the Candy Kingdom, and Jake, then tears apart the Candy Kingdom. It ultimately takes an Enemy Mine with Ice King to defeat him. And even then, his soul transfers again.
  • Our Liches Are Different
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Luckily, he didn't regain his full power...yet.
  • Playing with Fire: Has the ability to shoot green flames from his hands.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Was imprisoned in amber by the legendary hero Billy.
  • Sickly Green Glow: If it isn't the flames he shoots it's the bubbling potion he uses to regain his power. It at least has plutonium in it.
  • The Undead
  • Vile Villain Saccharine Show
  • Walking Wasteland/Touch of Death: He leaves path of death and destruction in his wake. After he possesses Princess Bubblegum, he uses this to wilt an entire room full of flowers with one touch.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Finn managed to beat him in the first fight, only because he was prevented from regaining his full strength. When he did later, he's powerful enough to deliver a Curb Stomp Battle to Finn, Jake, and the Gumball Guardians of the Candy Kingdom, requiring an Enemy Mine with Ice King to defeat him. Even without his full power, he was able to shatter the gauntlet given to Finn to kill him and knock out Jake in one blast.

Flame Princess

"Don't EVER mess with me again..."

The princess of the Fire Kingdom; a princess made out of fire. Beneath her innocent exterior is a deeply destructive and unpredictable personality, with a terrible temper. She has no perspective on the norms of the world and doesn't seem to understand what is right or wrong, possibly due to being sheltered by her father. At the end of the third season, she inadvertently becomes Finn's new love interest.

Voiced by: Jessica DiCicco

  • Ambiguously Evil: Her father claims she's evil, she transfigures innocents on a whim, and she ends up attacking the Goblin Kingdom, so she's clearly dangerous. However, she's not consistently malevolent and she justifies her actions with a worldview that is warped, to be sure, but not particularly selfish or evil. She greets resistance to her aims with confusion, rather than malice or force, more often than not.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever
  • Badass Princess: Understatement. It is very likely that she is the most powerful princess in Ooo, and she could probably destroy an entire kingdom if she wanted to.
    • In her second episode, she came dangerously close to doing just that (to the Goblin Kingdom, to be precise). She only stopped because she was distracted by Finn crying.
  • Baleful Polymorph: Turns several Fire People into Fire Cats for whispering. This is not the first time she's done this.

Flambo: So that's where I came from.

Flame Princess: Fire's purpose is to burn. So I'm going to turn this land into my fire kingdom.

Jake (pretending to be Finn): (after learning she's evil and psycho) Y'know, On Second Thought, we're not really each other's types...
Flame Princess: ...We're... what?

Jake (pretending to be Finn): I changed my mind. I don't like you.

Flame Princess: You... WHAT?!?!?!

Flame Princess: You should not toy with the emotions of a fire elemental.

Others

The Snail

A snail who can be seen waving at the audience in every episode (except "Trouble in Lumpy Space"). His only notable role in any episode was being mind-controlled by the Lich into releasing it. Currently being possessed by the Lich.

Voiced by: Pendleton Ward

Cinnamon Bun

One of the many inhabitants of the Candy Kingdom. Half-baked. Has a tendency to fall down.

Voiced by: Dee Bradley Baker

Tree Trunks

A cute little elephant who is actually an old senile woman. She loves apples and baking apple pie.

Voiced by: Polly Lou Livingston

Starchie

An inhabitant of the Candy Kingdom, distinguished by his hat, mustache, and the fact that he's a ball of starch.

Voiced by: Tom Kenny

  • Butt Monkey: Bad things tend to happen to him, like getting thrown in the dungeon, attacked by zombies, or getting Freezer Burn Flu.
  • Cool Hat
  • Gasshole: Squeeze him and he'll fart.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The Ice King's pained howls free him from the Freezer Burn Flu, and after saying he feels healthy again, he immediately bulks up even more.

A bit too healthy if you ask me.

The Duke of Nuts

"Why would you want to sack MY Nut Castle on my second son's first birthday?"

A secondary character, the Duke of Nuts is a generally nice member of royalty, ruling over the Nut Kingdom. An all-around family man, his only major flaw is that a physical deficiency makes him uncontrollably eat any pudding in range.

Voiced by: Steve Little

  • Nice Guy: Ridiculously nice. Almost obscenely nice. Hell, he was willing to take the fall for Finn even though he was totally innocent.
  • Poke the Poodle: About the only thing he's ever done wrong is eat all of Bubblegum's pudding.
  • Quirky Household: Him and his family are pretty weird, but love each other.
    • His wife is nuts, in both the figurative and literal sense of the word.
  • Sitcom Arch Nemesis: To Princess Bubblegum, who despises him solely because he ate all of her pudding once.
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pudding.

Gunter

"Wenk."

The Ice King's favorite penguin and servant. May be the ultimate evil power in Ooo, if Marceline's dad is correct. It has been suggested that the Ice King just calls whatever penguin is closest Gunter.

Voiced by: Tom Kenny

Susan Strong

A member of an underground dwelling group of humans. The "humans" she lives with are eventually revealed to be hyoo-mans, a strange race of Fish People living in the ruins of human civilization. Susan herself is implied to be the only true human amongst them.

Voiced by: Jackie Buscarino

  • Ambiguously Human: She probably is.
  • Badass: That muscular build isn't just for looks.
  • Cowardly Lion: Better than the rest of her people, certainly.
  • Expy/Shout-Out: Of Tarzan, much like Finn. In Susan's case it's a lot more obvious, since she's Raised by Wolves that don't act civilized but live as a group which she leads, and she doesn't speak fluent English.
  • Green Eyes
  • Hair of Gold: Which may or may not be real.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Big in every way. There is pretty much no physical indication of youth, leading to her Vague Age.
  • Sweet Tooth: She, along with the rest of her tribe, actually tries to eat the entire Candy Kingdom.
  • Took a Level In Badass: In her second appearance she's the leader of the Hyoo-mans in all but name, conquers some major fears, and is generally a ferocious warrior.
  • The Un-Reveal: We never find out if she's a fish person like the others, or a real human.
    • At the end of 'Beautopia' after she gently moves Finn's hand beneath her hat, we don't get to see whether or not there's a set of gills there or a human ear. Finn's reaction and Susan's Character Development imply that she is human.
  • Vague Age: She and Finn have more than a little chemistry, and Hulk Speak and Naive Newcomer aside they seem to be on the same intellectual level. However, Susan's body type is very much that of an adult woman.
  • You No Take Candle

Marceline's Dad

Also known as the "Lord of Evil". One of the most evil entities in The Land of Ooo (Probably second only to The Lich). Currently locked away in The Nightosphere. In season 4, his full name was given as Hunson Abadeer.

Voiced by: Martin Olson

Peppermint Butler

Princess Bubblegum's loyal servant. Best friends with Death. Will probably eat your flesh while you are sleeping.

Voiced by: Steve Little

Me-Mow

A tiny cat-like assassin.

Voiced by: Kyla Rae Kowalewski

Ash

Marceline's old "Genius Wizard" boyfriend. They started living together in the Tree Fort (before Joshua) until Ash moved Marceline away from the Candy Kingdom to his current house. Then he sold her teddy bear to a witch, earning his girlfriend's anger.

Voiced by Steve Agee

"Ashicus Flyicus"

Earl of Lemongrab

A very loud lemon drop man created in a lab by Princess Bubblegum in case she was ever unable to rule the kingdom. He comes into play once she de-ages due to the whole Lich problem. As immature as he is charismatic, his interests include cleanliness, bland foods, and SENDING EVERYBODY TO THE DUNGEON! A One-Scene Wonder in his first appearance, the creators of Adventure Time decided they like him enough to bring him back later in Season 4.

Voiced by: Justin Roiland

  • Ambiguous Disorder: Thanks to some kind of chemical error Princess Bubblegum made when she created him. Whatever his problem is, it can be best described as a hideous combination of anxiety, anger management issues, Asperger's Syndrome, manic-depressive disorder, extreme stupidity, and OCD.
  • Angrish: He screams most of what he says, his dialogue often consists of grammatically incorrect fragments, and he often screams nonsensical non-words to get his point across. "FFFFFFFUMMMMM!!!"
  • Anti-Villain: Type II and/or III.
  • Backstory Horror: He's a hilarious character. But if you think about the cause of his miserable existence for too long, and his feelings towards said existence, it can get depressing, and creepy, very quickly.
  • Berserk Button: His very sensitive nerves are all practically connected to the big giant berserk button that is Lemongrab's brain. Pet peeves include backtalk, uncleanliness, loudness (oddly), pranks, and being touched. If one does any of these things near him, one is most likely going to be sent to the dungeon for an absurdly lengthy amount of time.
  • Blue and Orange Morality: "Anyone who disagrees or disobeys will be thrown in the dungeon!" Whether or not it makes any sense...
  • Butt Monkey: He essentially showed up once, had an invisible "Kick Me" sign slapped onto his back, then was violently kicked out again.
  • Catch Phrase: "UNACCEPTABLE!" and, more frequently, "# Hours/Days/Years DUNGEON!!!" His very distinctive, cracking screams may count, as well.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: His demands are so unreasonable and passionate, he appears to be existing in an entirely different world than the people he rules over.
  • Cool Horse: It looks like a camel version of him!
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's a horribly mean, socially retarded idiot with a low tolerance to pain, yet he could easily be called the strongest candy person- thanks to his absurdly hard lemon candy skin. He fell out of the tall tower of the Candy Castle and slammed his noggin into the ground hard enough to leave a large hole, and he was totally uninjured! And according to a production assistant on the show, he's immune to the "exploding" problem that candy people face, because of his hard shell.
  • Cry Cute: He's a complete asshole to everybody... but the second he starts crying that pitiful little cry, it's impossible not to go "Awww..." in pity and want to hug him.
  • Cry for the Devil: See above example. After he's a jerk to the candy people, Finn and PB get revenge by dressing up as BedsheetGhosts, running up to him, and beating him up. It's impossible to not feel at least a LITTLE sorry for him as he's huddled on the ground in a fetal position, crying and coughing.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Will send anyone to the dungeon for a random amount of time (from three hours to a million years). Not always unjustified, though.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: His are actually quite amusing. His eyes are dark, dull, and lifeless most of the time, even when he's screaming at the top of his lungs.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: He's seen doing this in Too Young, after he imprisoned everybody. Seeing as how he doesn't have any friends, he probably does this fairly often.
  • Epic Fail: His existence...
  • Eye Scream: He gets one in Too Young, after being traumatized by being alive, when his eyes roll back into his head, leaving only the whites exposed as he screams bloody murder.
  • Fan of Underdog/ Vocal Minority: His small, bizarre fanbase is this IRL, judging by the fact that he was only in one episode (as an antagonist,) and already has a list of tropes as long as the main characters'.
  • Flat Joy: His laugh. Also: "Me, too. I'm excited, too."
  • Friendless Background: Informed attribute according to Word of God. Not surprising, though, given his totally repellant personality.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong
  • Gag Nose
  • Gonk
  • Ha Ha Ha No
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: "THIRTY DAYS IN THE DUNGEON!" "For who?" "EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM! *throws arms into air* MMLLLUUUUGGH!!!"
  • Hates Being Touched: His awesomely bizarre reaction to Finn slapping his hand "HHHOOOO?! MMM...! *GASP!*"
  • Hates Small Talk: "Who are you talking to?" "THREE! HOURS! DUNGEON!"
  • Hates Everyone Equally: Not many people can live up to his impeccably high standards of behaviour, and he doesn't have any friends.
  • Hypocrite: Given how stupid he is, this isn't surprising. "STOP SCREAMING!!! WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING?!"
  • Humiliation Conga: His entire first episode.
  • Informed Attribute: His lack of friends, according to Word of God. Not that it wasn't suggested earlier...
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Although he has a low tolerance to physical pain, he definitely qualifies, thanks to his super-hard lemon candy skin. He fell head-first from a tall tower and slammed his noggin into the ground hard enough to make a large indentation, but he was unharmed. He also had a pretty nasty fall from a tree and fell on his back, and he was okay- although unhappy.
  • Jerkass: A sympathetic example. He's an experiment gone wrong, and he really isn't used to being alive, and he has no social skills, but he is unnecessarily mean and nasty towards everyone he comes in contact with, and very often solicits (and deserves) the harassment he receives.
  • Large Ham/No Indoor Voice: Sweet Glob, Lemongrab.
  • Laughing Mad: Lemongrab's utterly disturbing laughing fit after he is pranked for the first time in Too Young. He doesn't even SMILE- his head just flails around and bounces with weird squishy noises, and his eyes are wide. It makes everyone else uncomfortable.
    • Lemongrab: "...Prank? F-for laughs? Yes, of course; just a harmless prank... F..for laughs... Ha..a.a? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH-OH! HAHHAHOAHAOHAOAHOAHAOAHAHAOAOAAHAOAHAOAHAOA-" *immediately returns to normal* "Twelve years dungeon! All of you- DUNGEON! Seven years, no trials! C'mon... LET'S MOVE IT!!!"
    • Another example is from the deleted "Rice Cake" scene. After Finn and PB beat him up, he takes a rice cake out of his pocket, licks it all over, and laughs to himself. Finn and PB, totally puzzled and weirded out, look at each other with question marks over their heads. "I don't think that plan worked, either," PB remarks.
  • Leitmotif: His is a quiet, out of tune harpsichord and/or piano played at an irregular rythm, and it often loudens when he yells. It sounds awkward- almost as if there are mistakes in the music, or that the piece doesn't make sense; which is fitting, because he is a failed science experiment.
  • Man Child: An adult with the apparent mind of a bratty little kid. (Also, his pajammies have snaps on the butt!)
  • Modest Royalty: Surprisingly, given his loud disposition, ("That is why I am royal, and YOOOU are SERVILE!",) he gives absolutely no visual indication that he is royal.
  • Mommy Issues: And how! If sending your creator (who despises you) to the dungeon for one million years after she beats you up doesn't qualify, nothing does!
  • Nightmare Face: He gets one in a deleted scene, where he makes a candy child cry.
  • Noodle Incident: Everything we don't know about him or his life story can be chalked up by his creator's singular explanation: "It's complicated."
  • No Social Skills: To quote from Jesse Moynihan, co-writer of Too Young, he is "weird, angry, isolated, with an inability to read social cues."
  • No Sense of Humor: He tries; he really does, but...
  • Non-Standard Character Design: His eyes are vastly different from most of the other characters' eyes, and he's one of the few to have a nose.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Only appeared in one episode so far, yet he's solicited more love, hatred, confusion, pity, and fear than any other minor character in the show- and he has a small but exceedingly loud fanbase.
  • Overly Long Scream: Everything he says could be considered this, actually.
  • Overly Long Tongue: Shown to have one in the storyboards, during the infamous "rice cake" scene. Its long, green, and rather snake-like in how it moves.
  • Parental Abandonment More literally, "Creator Abandonment." According to Word of God, Princess Bubblegum stuck him in a castle outside the Candy Kingdom walls and didn't speak of him or to him until his first appearance in the show.
  • Picky Eater The earl will ONLY eat foods that are bland and tasteless. "Whatever you made, I hope it's as mild as kitten milk!"
  • Played for Laughs: His rather sad backstory is nearly entirely portrayed as comical, thanks to the copious amounts of Narm Lemongrab always adds to his own scenes.
  • Punch Clock Villain: He isn't evil, according to Word of God. He's still a huge butt, but he only usurped the throne because it was his royal duty- not because he wanted to rule the kingdom OR make everyone unhappy.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis! "UNACCEPTABLE! CONDITION!" "THREE! HOURS! DUNGEON!"
  • Psychopathic Manchild: More of an "emotionally unstable/unadjusted manchild," but the gist remains.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor In Sense: He's an earl and the heir to the throne of the Candy Kingdom... but he can't even prepare a simple meal for himself, and presumably relies on his servants for his basic needs.
  • Royal Brat: Justified in that he's a mentally challenged, emotionally unstable failed science experiment. Unjustified in that he's needlessly rude, mean, and obnoxious towards everyone he comes in contact with.
  • Royally Screwed-Up
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Unfortunately...
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Screams more like a schizophrenic Finnish woman giving birth to a puffer-fish, but the point still stands.
  • Sequel Episode: You Made Me!
  • Serious Business: For him, everything is serious business.
  • Sinister Schnoz: Like many of the show's antagonists/jerks, he has a very long nose.
  • Super OCD: "CLEAN THIS PLACE UP OR DUNGEON! THREE HOURS DUNGEON!!!"
  • The Comically Serious: He takes everything so seriously, it's hilarious to watch him struggle.
  • The Mentally Disturbed: And how!
  • The Scream: It's as if the writers wrote his dialogue in all caps, with no spaces.
  • The Sociopath: Given how unsympathetic and mean he is, it isn't surprising that he teeters very close to being this. This is more due to his blatant lack of understanding of "social appropriateness" than it is with him as a person, though.
  • The Unfavorite: "*Sigh...* I created Lemongrab. He was the first of my experiments gone wrong..."
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Really, really, really bland foods, according to Word of God. Hence why he was excited about the mashed carrots, "lovingly boiled of all flavor," according to Peppermint Butler. In the storyboards, he's seen saying to Peppermint Butler: "Whatever you made, I hope it's as mild as kitten milk!" In a memorable unused scene, Lemongrab is seen doing what can only be described as French-kissing a rice cake.
  • Tragic Villain: A volatile, temperamental failed science experiment with psychological problems and a predisposition to be a bitter person who is despised by his own creator/mother, and doesn't have a single friend. Not truly evil, though- just a mean, jerkish butt who treats others terribly.
  • Trope Overdosed: He's appeared in all of one episode, and look how many tropes he has.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: He assumes this pose after Finn and PB beat him up in the hallway, and he's whimpering.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: He's the tyrant, though he isn't evil and cruel so much as he's... incredibly sheltered and sensitive to most things.
  • Upper Class Twit: The archetype of a royal idiot.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: One of his most memorable scenes, which has been subject to a bit of Memetic Mutation, involves Lemongrab projectile-vomiting all over Peppermint Butler.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous??: His reaction to "the thing." And his comically overblown reactions for petty misdeeds in general.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He just wants the kingdom to be clean, quiet, and orderly. So he imprisons everyone.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Psychologically, Lemongrab is... "special," to put it nicely. Let's just say this "specialness" did not serve him, or anyone else, well when he inherited the throne to the Candy Kingdom.
  • You No Take Candle: If you piss him off enough, he starts to talk (or scream, to be more accurate,) like this. "CLEAN THIS PLACE UP OR DUNGEON! THREE HOURS DUNGEON!"
