Characters that appeared in Tite Kubo's Bleach. There are so many that they occupy eight pages. This page deals with characters who appear only in the Bleach anime and films, not the manga.

Modsouls

Lirin

Human Ririn
Mod Soul Lirin

A modified soul created by Urahara along with Kurodo and Noba. She is the de facto leader of the three. She and her "siblings" initially appeared giving Ichigo's team a surprisingly brutal Training from Hell, but quickly became good friends (especially with Ichigo) with them and were instrumental in the war against the Bount. Her stuffed animal form is a hooded chicken, and she has illusion powers.

Kurodo

Human Kurodo
Mod Soul Kurodo

Another modified soul created by Urahara. He can copy the appearances and abilities of others, and his stuffed animal self is a bizarre looking bunny. He is close friends with Orihime.

Noba

Human Noba
Mod Soul Noba

The last of the three modified souls created by Urahara, and a close friend of Chad. He has power over space, and his stuffed animal form is a mouthless turtle.

The Bount

The Bount are a group of humans that gain immortality by feasting on human souls. They have weapons known as "dolls", a similar equivalent to Zanpakuto.

Jin Kariya

The leader of the Bounts, and Big Bad of the Bount arc. While at first it seems like his goal is to create a portal to Hueco Mundo and join Aizen, his real objective is to create a portal to Soul Society in order to take revenge for the mass slaughter of Bounts centuries ago. His Doll is Messer.

Gou Koga

Jin's right hand man. Besides Yoshino, he's the most sympathetic of the Bounts. His Doll is Dalk.

Tropes associated with Gou:

Yoshino Soma

Jin's former lover. She despises how Jin has changed the Bounts to fuel his ambitions, and wants nothing less than to destroy him. Her Doll is Goethe.

Tropes associated with Yoshino:

Mabashi

One of the Bounts. Like Yoshino, he initially hated how Bount society has changed under Jin's rule. However, after getting a taste of the power Jin offers, he quickly changes his mind. His Doll is Ritz.

Yoshi

One of the Bounts. She is easily the most violent and unhinged of the tribe. Has no relation to a certain green dinosaur. Her Doll is Nieder.

Ryo Utagawa

The first truly villainous Bount introduced. He is smug, arrogant and a general snob. His Doll is Friida.

Sawatari

The oldest of the Bounts, at least judging by his appearance. It's implied by Mabashi that he looks so old due to having consumed too many living souls. His Doll is Baura.

Ugaki

A Bount who helped Jin perfect the Bitto. He is smug, but prefers to stay back and let his Doll and allies do the fighting. His Doll is Gesell.

Ho and Ban

Two twin Bounts who look like children or young teenagers. They share the control of their Dolls, Guhl and Günther.

Zanpakuto Spirits

These are the manifested spirits inside the Shinigami's Zanpakuto. Most of these debuted in the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales Filler Arc, while only a few appeared in the actual canon manga.

Zabimaru

The spirit(s) of Renji's sword. At first they take the form of a baboon with a snake for a tail, but in the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales filler arc they take the form of a furry woman ("Chimpette") and a snake-like boy ("Snakey") chained together.

  • Absolute Cleavage - Chimpette has a pretty nice size chest... but isn't quite on the same level as Rangiku.
  • Achilles in His Tent - Snakey runs off in one of the post-arc fillers, and they have to reunite to deal with a Toju. Not that it detracts from her rugged attractiveness in any way.
  • Bag of Sharing: Chimpette and Snakey only have one sword between them, and they can both summon it whenever they want.
  • Chained by Fashion/Chained Heat + Variable-Length Chain: Their human forms are chained together, which surprisingly is more of an advantage in battle than a disadvantage, probably because of how long it is. They also constantly bicker, but work together surprisingly well.
  • Continuity Nod: Their new forms in the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales filler arc are the result of Renji letting Mayuri modify them after he broke his sword (though Renji doesn't seem to remember this at all). And this actually happened in the supposedly humorous, non-canonical omake chapters.
    • Technically, he kinda does, as hinted in an episode trailer, just not the full scope of the hows and why.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Chimpette in Japanese. And how. In fact, it's very easy to mistake Chimpette being voiced by a dude due to the seiyuu's convincingly manly voice.
  • Fiery Pinkheads: Well, where do you think they got it from?
  • Gender Bender/Humanity Ensues: As stated above, they used to be a baboon with a snake for a tail.
  • Heel Face Turn: Switches sides of the zanpakuto/shinigami conflict without being broken by Renji.
  • Mary Elizabeth McGlynn: Yeah, the Major is the English actress for Chimpette. Fans are pleased.
  • Michelle Ruff: English actress for Snake. Fans were pleased again.
  • Mitsuki Saiga (Chimpette. May explains her near-manly voice.)
  • Tohru Furusawa (original snake form); Asami Sanada (Snakey)
  • Vocal Dissonance: Chimpette's voice is far too deep for a female, but her seiyu is female. Probably it has something to do with her former gender. Completely thrown out of the window in English, though.
  • Whip Sword: Zabimaru's shikai form, which they can use in combat like all zanpakuto spirits.
  • You Gotta Have Pink Hair: Lavender-pink, in Chimpette's case.

Hyorinmaru

The spirit of Hitsugaya's sword. At first he takes the form of a large ice dragon, but in the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales filler arc he is a human, the reason why being left to the viewers' imaginations. He is the third (and so far last) spirit seen in the Bleach canon.

Muramasa

The spirit of an unknown shinigami's sword some evil guy named Kouga. He takes the form of a flamboyantly dressed man with long fingernails. His special power is to "free" other zanpakuto spirits from their owners and make them follow their "inner instincts", which is usually to kill their wielders. Killed his own wielder, of course. Not. His wielder was sealed, so Muramasa orchestrated the rebellion so he could find the seal and undo it.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Ichigo feels that way about him.
  • Arc Villain: He personally orchestrated the Zanpakuto Rebellion, but it was to get his master unsealed, so that essentially put him along the lines of a Dragon-in-Chief. Once Kouga gets unsealed, he betrays Muramasa and fights Byakuya, but dies after five episodes, leaving Muramasa as the Final Boss for the Zanpakuto arc.
  • Badass Longcoat (A bit flamboyant version, but still pretty badass, considering he took down the Soul Society in ONE night for crying out loud!).
  • Diabolus Ex Machina: Arguably can be said this happened when he had Sode No Shirayuki retreat before Rukia had a chance to try to turn her back to the good guys side which eventually leads to Sode No Shirayuki getting broken by Byakuya for him to test Byakuya's loyalty to him.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Trust us, he has dedicated fangirls.
  • Evil Plan: Overthrow Shinigami rule of the Soul Society A lie to cover up his true goal of freeing his wielder.
  • Expy: A pale, melancholic character identified with tear streaks of an abnormal color, with a form described as "true despair", who manages to gain the sympathy of Orihime despite performing monstrous acts? Doesn't ring any bells, at all.
  • Filler Villain: He's the Final Boss of the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales arc, having orchestrated the Zanpakuto Rebellion and indirectly causing the emergence of the Toju in the Beast Swords mini-arc. Although there is a Man Behind the Man... sort of..., the Rebellion appropriately starts and ends with Muramasa.
  • Grand Theft Me: It's implied this is how he manages to keep himself going despite his wielder being dead when he vists the Forest of Menos.
  • Jerkass Woobie: For all his assholeness, you gotta feel sorry on Muramasa as Kouga's fall to madness made him getting viewed as merely a weapon, unlike other zanpakutous, and always getting dashed on 'creating their world' (interpreted by Kouga as 'creating his world'), so much that he's unable to hear his master when needed... and Kouga's reaction after getting released makes you want to feel sorry for him.
  • Kansas City Shuffle: Yamamoto sealed himself away, so he lied to the protagonists to get them to break the barrier for him so he could get at Yamamoto's memories. Also, the whole rebellion was one of these, so he could unseal his wielder, Kouga.
  • Light Is Not Good: He dressed in pure white
  • Love Martyr: He remained loyal to Kouga even as he was mistreated and brutalized by him. Many years later, he's completely obsessed with freeing Kouga and reuniting with him. The expression of pure happiness when he succeeds only makes Kouga's reaction more cringe-worthy.
  • Meaningful Name: See for yourself.
  • People Puppets: One of his powers is apparently invisible strings with which he can control or restrain people.
  • One-Winged Angel: Twice, though he fights Ichigo in his normal appearance.
  • Self-Made Orphan: No longer has a wielder of his own due to killing them himself. Or not.
  • Tears of Blood: Plenty of them, possibly as a side effect of his Grand Theft Me. They come out when he actually cries, too.
  • Jamieson Prince: His English actor.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Killed his master and encouraged the other zanpakutos to rebel. Turns out the rebellion was an Evil Plan to distract all of the shinigami while he goes to free his master. Also inverted in that his master actually turned against him once unsealed due to his own perception of Muramasa refusing to obey his call.
  • Yuuichi Nakamura: The second Street Fighter IV seiyuu in this filler arc (Fei-Long)

Senbonzakura

The spirit of Byakuya's sword. He takes the form of a masked samurai. Dislikes the fact that Byakuya has joined the zanpakuto's side of the war, and is highly distrusting of him.. As it turns out, Bayakuya actually released him from Muramasa's brainwashing in the beginning of the arc, and he only pretends to still be brainwashed so that he and Byakuya can get close to Muramasa. Their true goal is to resurrect Muramasa's master Kouga, and per the Kuchiki clan's order/honor, kill him.

  • Badass Long Hair: Moreso than Byakuya, even!
  • Bishonen Samurai: First fully-armored Samurai introduced in the series, looks a bit like Byakuya, based on what little we can see behind the mask.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: He has no problems wearing his mask while taking a shower in the mens' bath, nor showing it all of on display for the girls that were trying to sneak a peak on him, among other things.
  • Cherry Blossoms: What his power looks like (and hence his name).
  • Cool Mask
  • Curious as a Monkey: The subsequent arc shows him to be quite childish, pushing any button he can find to see what it does. This drastic difference between him and Byakuya is lampshaded, and then it's revealed that Byakuya is just like that, but he hides it better. Subtlely lampshaded, too, as the one trying desperately to control Senbonzakura's "monkey" urges is the "monkey" - or, more accurately, the baboon half of Zabimaru, Renji's baboon/snake zanpakuto
  • Daisuke Hirakawa: No need to send him Nice Boats, folks.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Quite literally.
  • The Dragon: To Muramasa.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's like a more emotional Byakuya, his figure is above average and his face is rather bishie. It's without a wonder that Haineko and Tobiume spied on him at the men's bathroom.... which prompted this reaction after they noticed how he still kept the damn mask on.
  • Fake Defector: Although we're not sure if his reaction at Sode no Shirayuki's death (via Byakuya) was genuine or an act.
  • Genre Savvy: Thinks he is this, but is Wrong Genre Savvy. Poor Rukia.
  • Hidden Depths: See Curious as a Monkey above, then remember that zanpakuto represents a shinigami's hidden side.
  • Hypocritical Humor: He scolds Zabimaru for breaking into Shinigami Research and Development Institute through a window when trying to deliver a broken sword. Turns out he did the exactly same by leaving a huge gap through the door.
  • If You're So Evil Eat This Kitten: Does this to Byakuya, telling him to kill Sode no Shirayuki and hand the broken sword to Rukia. Backfires horribly.
  • Multicolored Hair: His bangs are white.
  • Ship Tease (With Sode no Shirayuki).
  • The Faceless: His mask cracks at a few points, but his face is never completely shown.
  • Vic Mignogna: Sorta sounds like a calmer, more professional-sounding Edward Elric.

Sode no Shirayuki

The spirit of Rukia's sword. She takes the form of a white-skinned, white-haired yuki-onna, a Japanase ghost. Holds the title of "Most Beautiful Zanpakuto", which Rukia takes great pride in.

  • White Haired Action Girl: Kickass in her own right, but lost two of the (at least) four fights she's been in.
  • An Ice Person: Her standard powers. She uses them to much greater effect than Rukia ever did, even without Bankai, as in addition to the three dances, she can also shoot shards of ice.
  • Dropped A Bridge On Her: Gets broken by Byakuya after a short battle with him to prove his loyalty to Muramasa, and remains so until Mayuri's research restores her.
  • Hidden Depths: Hisana was a Yamato Nadeshiko, Rukia is not. Miyako was a Yamato Nadeshiko, Rukia is not. Side no Shirayuki, another Yamato Nadeshiko, is the Zanpakuto of Rukia. Hmmm....
  • Japanese Honorifics: After her Heel Face Turn, she uses "-dono" on fellow Zanpakutos, and calls Rukia "-sama."
  • Meaningful Name: Just like other zanpakuto - "Shirayuki" means "White Snow", which correctly describes... pretty much everything about her.
  • Mie Sonozaki: Her Japanese actress, who switches from a cold to a motherly tone. The third Street Fighter IV seiyuu in this filler (being Viper).
  • Ship Tease (With Rukia and Senbonzakura).
  • Tall Pale And Bishoujo Woman in White: They weren't kidding when they called her "the most beautiful zanpakuto".
  • Tara Platt: Her English actress, who also played Lisa. Same tone, too. Regarded as one of the best voices for a Bleach character.
  • The Worf Effect: Byakuya takes her OUT when he is ordered to.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Cold and apathetic, but polite at most points. Later showed a kinder, friendlier and somewhat mischievous side to Senbonzakura and Rukia.
  • Youkai: Is pretty obviously a yuki-onna, or "snow woman".

Kazeshini

The spirit of Hisagi's sword. Takes the form of an entirely black being with white facial features that doesn't seem to be entirely within this plane of existence. Compared to Hisagi, he's pretty damn Ax Crazy.

  • Ax Crazy: Has this in spades.
  • Badass and Child Duo: While he was still trying to kill Hisagi in the Beast Swords mini-arc, Kazeshini is forced to look after a child whose father was killed in an attack. The experience leads him to surrender to Hisagi.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: Seems covered in an unnatural darkness at all times, but his eyes and mouth just seem to glow.
  • Character Development: He mellows out a bit once he meets a random baby, finally understanding that he doesn't have to fight for fightings' sake, but he's still a temperamental, bloodthirsty bastard.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: In one Omake, he apologies to Hisagi and promise to be a nice zanpakuto. However, as they hug each other Kazeshini asks how could he possibly buy that and stab Hisagi's shoulder while laughing at him.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Inverted; he gets defeated with little effort by Ichigo.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first thing we hear from the guy was his Evil Laugh, basically saying that he's eager for a fight.
  • Everything's Better with Spinning: Can turn himself into a veritable whirlwind of blades, in addition to his standard spinning of his scthyes when he throws them.
  • Expy: Not as obvious as Muramasa, but Kazeshini is highly comparable to Hollow Ichigo, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez and Nnoitra Gilga. He's an Ax Crazy Blood Knight (all three) sporting a long hair mane (Pantera-Grimmjow) and a Slasher Smile (all three), who acts as an immoral partner of sorts to his "boss" (Hollow Ichigo), with weird shoes (Nnoitra) and cheating-prone battle tactics (all three).
  • Freudian Excuse: Apparently represents Hisagi's negative emotions. Hisagi apparently needs counseling. Good luck with that.
  • Heroic Sociopath: Is having a foul-mouthed, sadistic, fight-loving, bloodthirsty devil with a penchant for mass slaughter, erratic fighting style, underhanded tactics and unpredictable behavior on your side supposed to be a blessing or curse?
  • Hidden Depths: Shuhei always feared battle, and as a result, dislikes his zanpakuto (Kazeshini) for being something that looks as though it's meant to take life. With Kazeshini appearing as a fight-craving, battle-loving psychopath, one could say that Kazeshini is the personification of Hisagi's personality he denies, or according to himself, fears. In other words, Kazeshini is Hisagi's Shadow.
  • Kissho Taniyama: His seiyuu.
  • Licked by the Dog: His interactions with the baby, in a way.
  • Odd Couple: As with several other Shinigami/Zanpakuto relationships; Kazeshini is bloodthirsty and psychotic, while Hisagi is much more rational and pacifistic by comparison.
    • Taken well over the line by fans pairing him up with Haineko. Crack as it may be, that's a pretty interesting pair - a flirtatious catgirl with a nack for teasing and a bloodthirsty devil with a sadistic streak. Hell, if the two had interacted more often in the anime, they'd rival Hitsugaya and Matsumoto for the title of "Bleach's finest-oddest pair". As a bonus, there's a slight Relationship Voice Actor between him and Haineko as well (both Kissho Taniyama and Chiaki Takahashi played as eventual lovers in Rumbling Hearts)
  • Mr. Fanservice: There's something eerily appealing about his slender, black-red six-pack, psychotic devil or no.
  • Pointy Ears: Possibly to make him more demonic.
  • Psycho for Hire: By default, for everyone that employs him.
  • Real Zanpaktou Love Kids (A little baby attaches himself to Kazeshini for an episode, and despite himself, he keeps worrying about the child's well being, which is why when Hisagi finally bring him to heel, he finally understands his master better, and gains a fair appreciation for protecting others.)
  • Rule of Sexy: Body-swap his clothes with Hisagi, just for fun.
  • Sinister Scythe: Four of them, two in each hand.
  • Slasher Smile: Also has this in spades.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene

Haineko

The spirit of Rangiku's sword. Being the 'ash cat', she is a Catgirl covered with pink furs. Like Rangiku noted, she is lazy. She considers Rangiku to be an old hag, and is usually partnered with Tobiume, despite how much they bicker.

Tropes associated with Haineko:

  • Action Girl - As with most female zanpakuto, she's a fast and agile fighter, but lost most of her fights, or got interrupted.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Haineko's interested in getting Hyorinmaru's attention, spied on Senbonzakura when he was in the mens' bathroom, and flirted with Ichigo twice, when they first met, and when she showed pictures of herself to him. In fact, check out this little exchange between her and Tobiume:

Tobiume: "You jump on every guy you meet!"
Haineko (smirking): "Yep. Too bad."

Tobiume

The spirit of Hinamori's sword, and according to Hinamori herself, she helped her getting over her trauma towards Aizen. The real Tobiume, however, is a snarky, nasty-mouthed little girl. Like much of the fanbase, she is sick of Hinamori's obsession over Aizen. Partnered a lot with Haineko, who really irritates her, at least until later on.

Tobiume: She isn't a hag! If you insult a wonderful lady like her again, I'll never forgive you!

Katen Kyokotsu

The twin spirits of Shunsui Kyoraku's sword. They take the form of a quiet ninja girl and a mature woman with an Eyepatch of Power and a rather obvious Pirate Girl motif.

Tropes associated with Katen Kyokotsu:

  • Absolute Cleavage: Pirate Girl half.
  • Ascended Meme: They take the form of a ninja and female Japanese takeoff of a Pirate Girl, in what seems to be an obvious nod to the ninjas and pirates meme.
    • Also, the Kyoraku "King of Games" nickname is given a nod by the fact Katen Kyokotsu's older half seems to be a bit of game nut, notably card like games.
  • Ayumi Fujimura: Also played Tobiume.
  • Bob Haircut: Ninja half.
  • Character Development: The ninja half gets some thanks to Nanao.
  • Cool Versus Awesome: We have pirates and ninjas, ladies and gentlemen.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Pirate Girl half.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Pirate Girl half.
  • Hidden Depths: Touched on about the ninja half, who despite coming off as quietly borderline sociopathic, is revealed to be quite shy and has a very hard time expressing herself.
    • In fact, both of Shunsui's Zanpakuto tell us a lot about their owner. Even though it is filler, it's telling that the "shy, sensitive, hard to express how they feel, hidden in her shell" half of his materialized zanpaktou is who he details Nanao to watching over, and if his forlorn dialogue (to his zanpaktou's other half) is any indication, he seems to be saying that he has a hidden sensitive side that cares (for her) very deeply, he's just totally ineffectual at showing how he really feels except in the Chivalrous Pervert manner he usually is portrayed as, and since Zanpaktou are a reflection of their owners hidden qualities, as his zanpaktou show a surprisingly mature and shy side of his character, which he lampshades.
  • High-Class Call Girl: Intriguingly, the Pirate Girl half has an appearance that is a mixture of pirate and tayuu (she even uses the Figure 8 Step walk real life tayuu and oiran used to use when walking).
  • Lazy Bum: Katen Kyokotsu's older half. Self admitted even.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: Ninja girl half.
  • Screw Yourself - Averted. One half of his materialized Zanpaktou takes the form of a beautiful woman with an Eyepatch of Power, and at a party, Matsumoto wonders if leaving her with her often-lecherous master is a good idea. The Screw Yourself part comes from the fact Zanpakto are part of a Shinigami's soul, but as she says this, the scene cuts right back to the parties in question, and it's quite clear that Matsumoto is dead wrong. And even earlier Shunsui himself hammers a nail through that theory by implying that he views his Zanpakuto family, at the very least considering the ninja half as something of a daughter to him, if his little monologue when carrying her bridal-style after giving a One-Hit Kill on a Toju that tried to kill her is anything to indicate.
  • Sinister Scimitar: They both wields one.
  • The Quiet One: The ninja half. Aside from a few muffled noises, she never says a word.

Sogyo no Kotowari

The twin spirits of Jushiro Ukitake's sword. Take the form of two young identical boys with white hair, green eyes and wearing light blue robes and big triangular hats. They also join hands a lot, reminiscent of how their shikai form is connected by a red rope. Their name translates to "Law of the Twin Fish".

Tropes associated with Sogyo no Kotowari:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: They look directly at the screen at one point in episode 257.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: When they were killed by Ryujin Jakka under Muramasa's control, but they got better thanks to Mayuri Kurotsuchi's research.
  • Keets (Very energetic and playful.)
  • White Haired Cute Little Boys
    • This may or may not say something about who they're supposed to be a reflection of
  • Shock and Awe (They can shoot lightning from their fans.)

Suzumebachi

The spirit of Soifon's sword. She takes the form of a small, glowing fairy with light pink eyes, light-brown hair in pigtails and a stinger that takes up her entire right arm.

Ashisogi Jizo

The spirit of Mayuri's sword. Takes the form of a yellow-faced baby boy with wide eyes. Upon going Bankai, the kid grows to huge levels and his body looks a LOT like a caterpillar... that exhales poison.

Minazuki

The spirit of Retsu Unohana's sword. So mysterious that we still don't know if they're a boy or a girl.

  • The Faceless: Wears this weird robe-like thing that obscures everything about Minazuki's body (if it even has one).
  • Flat Character: It really doesn't have anything going for it - no dialogue, no personality, barely appeared on-screen, no known motivation to speak of, and no known gender.
  • Super Speed: Performs some pretty fast Flash Step maneuvers when leading Ichigo to Kazeshini.
  • The Voiceless: Not even any grunts or moans are heard from Minazuki.

Hozukimaru

The spirit of Ikkaku Madarame's sword. Appears as a near-naked ogre-resembling brute, sharing his wielders' fight-loving disposition, but is apparently as lazy as Ikkaku described him as. Unlike his owner, Hozukimaru is much more willing to use bankai and even calls Ikkaku out on not using it when he should have.

Ruri'iro Kujaku

The spirit of Yumichika Ayasegawa's sword. Takes the form of a human with green peacock-like feathers all over his body, aside from his head and part of chest. A very vain and condescending man, Ruri'ro Kujaku is even more of a narcissist than Yumichika himself, to the point of acting even girlier, but unlike his owner, Ruri'ro Kujaku is actually willing to use his full power from the get-go, whereas Yumichika fears the reception he'll get from Kenpachi and especially Ikkaku should they ever find out.

  • Ambiguously Gay / Camp Straight: Same issue as his master. His obsession with Yumichika's appearance (and also with accessorising Ikkaku in an after-episode segment) can be seen as either gay or mainstream fashion victim depending on which cultural lens he's viewed through.
  • Berserk Button: Takes issue with being called Fuji Kujaku (Wisteria peacock), instead of Ruri'ro Kujaku (azure peacock).
  • Disproportionate Retribution (You hate Yumichika because he doesn't call you by your preferred name? Despite knowing that he's got his reasons to do so? Uh...)
    • Might indicate that Yumichika has some self loathing issues from hiding his real powers.
  • Energy Absorption: His abilities, and the source of his frustration with Yumichika, who utterly refuses to use them in battle.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: (Like owner, like zanpakuto)
  • Nice Hat: He wears a turban that's modified to reflect a bird's crest and therefore provide a callback to his true nature (a peacock) without losing those all-important style points.
  • Those Two Guys Generation Xerox: Hozukimaru and Ruri'ro Kujaku tend to appear with each other a lot of the time, as does their owners - Ikkaku and Yumichika.
  • Vampiric Draining: His abilities drain an enemy's life-force and heal him and his wielder (although not his wielder during this arc thanks to his Berserk Button being constantly pressed).
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His nicely-toned chest is the only other place where that green, peacock-like feather-down doesn't cover, apart from his head.

Tenken

The spirit of Sajin Komamura's sword. Takes the form of a giant fire-breathing Buddhist deity with red skin.

Hisagomaru

The spirit of Hanataro Yamada's sword. Takes the form of a small metal robot with a gauge for one eye. Every bit as shy, nervous and insecure as Hanataro, he is the only zanpakuto with no complaints against his master.

Gonryomaru

The spirit of Chojiro Sasakibe's sword. Appears as a grim looking Ronin with a strange backpack-like structure on his back and a long, double bladed pike.

Gegetsuburi

The spirit of Marechiyo Omaeda's sword. Takes the form of a huge, ugly man similar to a toad.

The spirit of Izuru Kira's sword. Takes the form of a man carrying an impressive amount of weight on his back.

Patros

A rebellious Arrancar who plans to take over the Hueco Mundo by stealing the Hogyoku, but is stopped by Renji. His Resurrecion is Gerifalte.

Menis

One of Patros' henchmen, follows him in the Real World but gets offed by Hitsugaya and Matsumoto. His Resurrecion is Erizo.

Aldegor

Another low-level Arrancar working for Patros. His Resurrecion is Jabalì.

Maki Ichinose

A traitor Shinigami that serves as Jin's bodyguard. He was orginally part of Squad 11, under the captain before Kenpachi. When Kenpachi killed the old captain and took up the mantle, Ichinose was unable to accept him as a replacement for his (much) nobler captain, and left Soul Society in despair. Soon afterwards, he is saved from a Hollow by Jin, who offers him employment. Feeling he had regained a purpose, he joined Jin and quickly became his most fanatical servant. His Zanpakuto is Nijigasumi.

Shusuke Amagai

The new captain of Squad 3 in the New Captain arc, who hopes to increase cooperation between the squads and reduce reliance on the captains and lieutenants. It turns out that he's the son of Shin'etsu Kisaragi, and he wants to get revenge on Yamamoto for killing his father, not knowing that Yamamoto had no choice but to kill him when he was under the bakkoto's control. After learning this, he commits suicide. His Zanpakuto is Raika.

  • Arc Villain
  • Affably Evil: He sincerely cared about his friends and squad mates, and valued Ichigo as a friend and ally. Unfortunately, he was willing to throw it away in the name of vengeance, and he died regretting it.
  • Anti-Villain: His primary aim is revenge, but he's sincerely interested in improving cooperation and team-work within and between squads, qualities which in all honesty were frankly shit before he came around.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Ichigo in the second version of the Season 8 opening. While he and Ichigo work together for some time, he later turns out to be Ichigo's final enemy in the arc.
  • BFS/BFG: His Bankai is part giant hook-sword and part flame cannon.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Even alcohol-flavored pickles can get him drunk.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Amagai's Bakkoto brings with it a Game Breaker ability to seal ALL shinigami abilities. Unfortunately for him, Ichigo's Hollow corruption gives him just enough power to defeat Amagai on skill.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: He certainly orchestrated much of the events that kept the Soul Society pre-occupied, and he's far more competant as a fighter, but he was officially working as The Mole for Kumoi, simultaneously protecting Kumoi from investigations by the Shinigami. Ultimately, as he planned from the start, Amagai killed Kumoi, took upgrades for his Bakkoto and confronted Yamamoto personally.
  • Expy: Amagai seems to be the anime writers' attempt to create their own Aizen--a seemingly nice guy who turns out to have been Evil All Along.
  • Flaming Sword: Raiga is a hooksword that is capable of manipulating flames. His bankai takes that to a BFS with an afterburner for a hilt.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Amagai started out in one of the more unassuming positions in soul society, being a plainclothesman tasked with surveying rebel forces. The very nature of his position would make any sort of merit or positive reputation difficult to build up. Nevertheless, he learns Bankai, impresses superiors, their superiors, and all the captains, and makes it up all the way to Physical Godhood as a Captain. The fact that he becomes, for a while, the most powerful being in Soul Society, is only the cherry on top.
  • Green Lantern Ring: His Bankai has a multitude of techniques with which to shape fire. Lots of fire.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Dies after telling Izuru that he enjoyed his time with him and the rest of the division.
  • Hotblooded Sideburns
  • Kenyuu Horiuchi
  • The Mole: Before being made Captain his job was to go undercover and keep track of rebel elements, thought it's implied that he was discovered and had to fight his way out on at least one occasion. In the present day, he's the second one for Kumoi, and by far the more competent one.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Up to Eleven, since we're talking a Hook-bladed BFS+ a afterburner BFG with massive amounts of fire as ammunition. There's even a massive Conch-shell hand-guard that acts as a very good shield.
  • Nice Guy: He's sincere and compassionate about wanting to unify the various factions in the Soul Society military hierarchy, and he's an approachable and even-handed captain, hanging out with his men to get to know them better. His desire for revenge just happens to be far greater than his good intentions.
  • Won't Work On Me: his bakkoutou negates other zanpakutos' abilities
  • Playing with Fire: His Zanpakuto.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Or so the characters thought, especially since he's willing to believe Ichigo and let himself be branded a criminal in order to help him find the truth.
  • Red Right Hand: His fully-released Bakkoto takes the form of a black dragon covering all his right hand, with a Laser Blade coming out the mouth to boot.
  • Redemption Equals Death Commits suicide to atone for his crimes.
  • Shaggy Dog Story: All the hard work put towards the rather revolutionary concept of interdepartmental cooperation is totally undercut by his betrayal and death.
  • Tragic Villain: He's a nice guy, a very capable captain, but his drive to kill Yamamoto overrides it all.

Makoto Kibune

The third seat of the third division, who cares little for those he deems too weak.

  • Big Fancy Sword: His Zanpakuto, Reppu, takes the form of a huge, oddly shaped glaive with three main blades.
  • The Dragon
  • Hoist by His Own Petard Consumed by his bakkoto. Izuru uses his ability to make it too heavy to fly, forcing him to use more and more of his power to compensate.
  • Nerd Glasses
  • Precision-Guided Boomerang: His zanpakuto, Reppu can be thrown and controlled in mid-flight.
    • It's later revealed that it is his bakkoto that controls Reppus flight. What Reppu itself is actually capable of (besides being a really big, weirdly shaped blade) is never actually revealed.
  • You Look Familiar: Looks a lot like a Shinigami version of Szyael Aporro.

Gyokaku Kumoi

The steward of the Kasumioji clan, who wants to kill Rurichiyo and take control of the clan with a variety of plans. He has a force of assassins armed with the special weapons known as the bakkoto, and also has Amagai and Kibune working for him but Amagai has his own agenda and kills him when he's no longer useful.

Hanza Nukui

An assassin hired by Kumoi and Ichigo's main rival for most of the early Amagai arc. His bakkoto, Saiga, can create illusions and fire energy blasts.

One of Hanza's subordinates, who attacks Rukia.

Genga

One Hanza's subordinates, who attacks Chad.

Ryu Kuzu

One of Hanza's subordinates, who attacks Uryu.

KogaKuchiki

The owner of the zanpakuto Muramasa. The son-in-law of Ginrei Kuchiki, AKA Byakuya's grandfather. Was very powerful and a great aid to the loyalists in a shinigami rebellion, but some of the captains were afraid of him, so they framed him for murdering his own allies in order to get rid of Muramasa. He got back at them, eliminating any chance to prove his innocence. He went on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge and was eventually stopped by Yamamoto and Ginrei, at which point he was sealed.

  • Arc Villain
  • Badass: Held his own against Byakuya without using a zanpakuto, instead fighting with the very spears used to seal him. If he actually got along with his sword, he'd be as broken as Aizen.
  • Blessed with Suck/CursedWithAwesome: Being able to control other people's swords isn't so great when your job description doesn't include fighting people with swords. Then there's a civil war and you become so overtly powerful that some of the higher ups on the same side as you become scared of your power and frame you for attacking your own side.
  • Death by Irony: As he dies, Kouga calls out for his Zanpakuto, just after betraying him and casting him aside like a tool. Frustrated with Muramasa's unresponsive predicament, Koga calls out to him again, before losing his balance and drowning into a river.
    • Even more ironic, as the tired Byakuya was falling in the exact same way... and was caught by his Zanpakuto.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: His mind shattered when he realized he had commited a crime out of revenge for being framed, at which point he started honestly believing that everyone was out to get him.
  • Generation Xerox: The way Koga seeks Ginrei's approval is exactly the same as Rukia's seeking for Byakuya's approval. The scene of Kouga reporting to Ginrei is even made uncannily similar to a flashback of Rukia reporting to Byakuya during the Soul Society arc.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Continuously felt this way regarding Ginrei Kuchiki's acceptance of him.
  • Important Haircut: Subverteed. In this case the hair wasn't important, it was the fact that it was connected to a hair adornment connected with the Kuchikis, which he was disgusted with.
  • Isshin Chiba: His seiyuu. Unfortunately, he didn't drop steamrollers or scream atop of his lungs "WRRRRYYYYY!!!!!"
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: His biggest Kick the Dog moment was when he literally kicked Muramasa. Repeatedly.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was sealed throughout the majority of the Zanpakuto Rebellion; Muramasa's primary goal was the release his Shinigami wielder from captivity. Once he was released, two flashback episodes showed his Start of Darkness, then he betrayed Muramasa, fought Byakuya... and died just after that, leaving a Hollowfied Muramasa as the Final Boss for the Zanpakuto arc.
  • Master of Illusion: This is Koga's own personal ability, he doesn't need Muramasa to use it.
  • Miscarriage of Justice: Koga pretty much slammed the door on this trope, as he didn't even give them a chance to prove him innocent or guilty, he took revenge on the accusing captains, and then when informed that this had pretty much annihilated any chance he would have been found innocent, he went nuts, which lead to his eventual sealing.
  • Offing the Offspring: Not confirmed, but the nature of their relationships to Ginrei mean that Byakuya is his nephew.
  • People Puppets: Both Koga and Muramasa have this ability.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can
  • Superpower Lottery: See the Blessed/Cursed entry, and that's just the beginning.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Why a lot of people feared Muramasa's powers, and thus Koga.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He seriously thought he could treat his Empathic Weapon like garbage and everything would remain all sugar and rainbows?
  • You Have Failed Me...: Does this to Muramasa when he is unsealed, unaware and uncaring that Muramasa was not at fault in the least.

Ashido Kano

A mysterious, lone shinigami who lives in the Forest of Menos. He's the only survivor of his original team.

  • Badass: He was the lone survivor of an extermination team. He fought and continues to fight against Menos-class Hollows for centuries.
  • Bolivian Army Ending: was last seen holding off a group of Gillians and Adjuchas. Since he fought them many times before, odds are he's still alive and kicking.

  • What Could Have Been: He was meant to be introduced in the manga, but time constraints forced Kubo to cut out the Forest of Menos arc.

A young girl from a very noble Soul Society family, caught in many power struggles once her father dies.

A shinigami and Rurichiyo's bodyguard. His Zanpakuto is Benishidare.

Unnamed Female Arrancar

Exactly What It Says on the Tin. A nameless arrancar woman who attacked Karakura town with a giant flying fortress made of Hollows, but was defeated by Chizuru Honsho in a .... comedic way. She appeared in another filler episode where she sends her minion Michel in Karakura Town.

Michel

A charming and well dressed boy who appeared in Karakura Town and befriended anyone much to Kon's dismay, but later revealed to be a energy-sucking arrancar sent here to drain the reiatsu from the people of Karakura.

Nozomi Kujo

A Shinigami that was found in the Dangai, fleeing from the Soul Society with a rag to cover her figure. She is wanted by Inaba for an unknown reason. She has been revealed to be one of the first Mod Souls developed by Ouko Yushima and has a Zanpakuto, Arazome Shigure.

  • Action Girl: Actually justified. Why is Nozomi so powerful? Well, she's one-half of Yushima's soul, who had something of a low self-esteem because of his weaker fighting style.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Compare her looks to Inaba. No surprise that he's the villain, and she's the heroine for the Invading Army arc.
  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: She wears a really short shihakusho with over-knee boots as her Shinigami uniform, which looks very similiar to Lisa's in Turn Back the Pendulum.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Wears one as part of her uniform, and she's evidently the most powerful female fighter in the series.
  • Damsel in Distress: Finally Inaba has captured her and now is trying to... ehm... merge himself with her?
  • Energy Absorption: Her Zanpakuto can absorb Reishi, allowing her to take down even powerful opponents easily. No wonder that Inaba wants her out of his way.
  • Expy: Of Senna, they're both mcguffin girls and are semi-soul reapers. Both also pull a Heroic Sacrifice to help the heroes
  • Flat Character: Although it was clear from the outset she was going to be a unique, special character, a large part of the fandom views her as very poorly characterised.
  • Fusion Dance: Why Inaba needs her. Only by fusing together can he unlock his true power.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Her final goodbye to Kon. Dawww
  • Healing Hands: How she healed Ichigo.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the last moments when she in control of Ouko's body, she forces him to stab himself with a reishi blade to give Ichigo a fighting chance at beating him.
  • MacGuffin Girl: Inaba wants her for some reason.
    • She and Inaba are the first Mod Souls to ever exist and were made by Ouko Yushima. Inaba needs her to unlock his true power.
  • No Ontological Inertia: She fades away once Ouko is beaten and the fusion breaks as she had forced Ouko to stabbed himself and weaken him enough for Ichigo to deal with him. This wound up draining the power keeping her and Inaba in existence sadly.
  • Magic Knight: Can use Kido actually a similar ability quite well, and later she gets a Zanpakuto too.
  • Opposite Gender Clone: Of Ouko Yushima, the man who created her and Inaba.
  • She's Got Legs: Dayum!
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Officially became the most important female character in the current filler arc, completely throwing Rukia and Orihime out of the loop.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Despite her powers, whenever she tries to interfere in a battle against the Reigai in episode 332, she's told to stay away. Considering her status, it could be seen as a Take That, but she managed to make a comeback... that failed to impress Yamamoto. Once she tried to make another comeback against Inaba, she failed again, and she's now under Inaba's capture.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: Defensive and cold towards Kon, but less so around Ichigo.
    • Her initial cold shoulder was explained indirectly by her connection to Yushima. He may have been a Shrinking Violet, but he held a low opinion on forming bonds, believing that that relying on others will only have them get in the way. Nozomi inherited that from him, if only for a while.
  • The Worf Effect: Ironically, despite being so hyped and well-considered, her attacks fail to kill Inaba.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Type B in her school uniform. Also carries over to her Shinigami uniform.

Kageroza Inaba

A Shinigami from the Department of Research and Development studying the Precipice World, and creator of the Reigai. His zanpakuto is Raiku. Along with Nozomi he is one of the first Mod Souls created by Ouko Yushima.

  • Abusive Parents: Has a similar relationship with Nozomi.
    • More like "abusive brother", since he and Nozomi were born fro the same soul.
  • Back from the Dead: Sorta. The Reigai can be brought back as long as the Modsoul itself is intact. This means quite a few of the defeated Reigai are now back in action.
  • Badass Bookworm: Was able to beat an (admittedly weakened) Ichigo in a straight fight,[1] even lampshading the fact that he's not relying on any cheap tricks (unlike a certain other Mad Scientist Shinigami).
    • Which begs the question: how is he so powerful? He's the darker, unrestrained half of Yushima's soul, who was far weaker than either of his classmates at the Shino Academy.
  • Bad Boss: Seeing how he's an Aizen Expy, this one was almost a given.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Inverted. While he inherited Yushima's intelligence and evil thoughts, the far prettier Nozomi got Ouko's good looks and more positive personality traits.
  • Berserk Button: He hates when someone underestimates him.
    • Doubles as Fridge Brilliance; he's the crazier part of Yushima's soul, who felt that he was The Scrappy since he wasn't as good at fighting while in the Shino Academy.
  • Big Bad: For the Invading Army arc.
    • Dragon-in-Chief: He represents Yushima's unrestrained potential, so he's far more powerful than Yushima himself, and he personally instigated the Reigai uprising, but he's still loyal to Yushima, since part of the latters' soul makes up Inaba's personality.
  • Blade on a Stick/Double Weapon: His Zanpakuto, Raiku.
  • Blood Knight: The Reigais are noticeably more aggressive than their originals.
  • Brother Chuck: Reigai Unohana was not among the Reigai who sacrificed themselves to stop Ouko, and she was never seen being killed by anyone.
  • Depraved Bisexual: He was a little close to Kon for comfort, and his interest in Nozomi brings up quite a few eyebrows. Crosses over into Screw Yourself since him and Nozomi were created and based on their creator Ouko Yushima.
  • Evil Counterpart: Could argue he fills a similar niche to Szayel for Mayuri, but he's much more clearly this to Nozomi. They were both "created from the same Reishi", and according to Kageroza himself, "want the same things."
  • Evil Laugh
  • Evil Plan: to merge with Nozomi and unlock his true power.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Pretty much obligatory for villains in Bleach.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: reigai change their iris color into bluish purple. It's the best way to determine if you're talking to the real Shinigami or not.
  • Expy: Once again, of Aizen. Traitorous Shinigami (bonus points for glasses)? Check. Overpowered sword? Check. Singlehandedly created army of captain-level warriors? Check. Master of his own realm? Check. Gets unnervingly close towards his enemies? Check. An expert scientist? Check. Curb-stomped The Hero in their first encounter? Check. Is after a much younger Woobie of a girl? Check. Uses the Central 46 into allowing him to continue his work from behind the scenes? Check. Has a zanpakuto ability which he can use to create a decoy of himself? Check.
  • Filler Villain
  • Fusion Dance: Why he needs Nozomi. Only by fusing together can his true power be unleashed.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: His goals were revealed fairly early on (created the Modsouls; created Reigai as payback for getting his Modsoul research shafted; and wanted to fuse with Nozomi to get her power), but his motivation was kept a secret until the last few episodes. In particular, he's one-half of Yushima's soul, the real creator of the Modsouls, and he needed to fuse with Nozomi - the other half - in order to restore Yushima's sanity and boost the latters' power exponentially.
  • Interim Villain: The anime actually manages to tie him into the storyline by addressing the Janitor-less issues regarding the Dangai, but it's inverted - Inaba makes his debut after Aizen's defeated, though the time fluctuations in the Dangai (caused by Aizen destroying the Janitor) were fixed following Inaba facing his own demise.
  • Ironic Echo: During his fight with Ichigo he states that he's not using "cheap tricks". Then is revealed that his Zanpakuto can manipulate space, and Kenpachi calls him out for using "a cheap trick".
  • Mad Scientist: Somewhat more overt about it than Aizen, though.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kage" means "shadow", which fits really well when you consider he is the dark half of Ouko's soul.
  • Me's a Crowd: His zanpakuto can also create a decoy of himself.
  • Mirror Match: Partly averted sometimes by his Reigais, as he sends Kyoraku and Ukitake to dispatch Yamamoto, or the Lightning Bruiser Sui Feng against the Mighty Glacier Komamura.
    • Furthermore, His zanpakuto powers allow him to create space portals, allowing him to absorb incoming attacks and send them back at will.
  • Multicolored Hair: Green and blonde.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Once defeated and split back into two, both Nozumi and he start to fade havng used up all their energy fighting Ichigo
  • Oh Crap: When Mayuri (disguised as his own Reigai) backstabs him.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Seemingly averted in that he's specifically said to specialize in the Precipice World, but he also has quite a talent in creating Reigais.
    • He has been revealed to be the one who created the Mod Souls and learned about the Precipice World afterwards in order to retrieve the data on Mod Souls that he hid there.
  • Pet the Dog: Sort of; he worries about Nozomi's health, but only because he needs her for his plans.
  • Power Limiter: The bracelets the Reigai wear act as this.
  • Psycho Rangers: The Reigai are copies of their Shinigami originals, with the same memories and abilities, but their personality differences are subtle, yet easy to spot out. The bracelets the Reigai wore made it easy to spot them, but after losing them in 329 they glowed for a episode. Now the only way to tell the difference is their glowing blue eyes.
  • Red Right Hand: The Reigai all have a bracelet with a black diamond on their wrist. They no longer have those as of Episode 329. Replacing it briefly with Power Glows before losing that. Now the only difference is their glowing eyes.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: You wouldn't believe it at first glance, but he gives Aizen a run for his money.
  • Story-Breaker Power: The Reigai are rather overpowered, more so than their originals, and he's able to control time and space itself. Plus, It Gets Worse
  • The Starscream: Reigai!Mayuri is one to Kageroza. Subverted in that said Reigai quickly turns out to be the real Mayuri.
  • The Stoic: Under normal circumstances, at least, but it's clear that he isn't all there to begin with.
    • Not So Stoic: only while fighting. Fridge Brilliance when you realize that his Zanpakuto command is "Go Mad". Also when he realize that Mayuri swapped places with his own Reigai and has just stabbed his back with Ashisogi Jizo.
    • After getting hit with a drug that stops all thoughts he was still able to attack Reigai Isane by acting on nothing but his own anger.
  • Smug Snake: Has a rather petty motive (see Hidden Agenda Villain), values himself (far) over his subordinates, treats poor Nozomi (who's essentially his sister) like shit, and would have lost his fight with Mayuri (pretty badly) were it not for a contingency plan that Mayuri basically ALLOWED him to implement out of curiosity. He's a serious threat, alright, but it certainly doesn't justify his God complex.
  • Sword Cane: Similar to the Zanpakto wielded by Yamamoto and Urahara, his takes the form of a silver cane while sealed.
  • Time Stands Still: Appears to be his sword's ability.
    • Partially jossed. Unohana stated that his Time-manipulating skills comes from his tampering with the Dangai. His Zanpakuto can manipulate space and create portals by swinging it.
  • Up to Eleven: There's a stronger version of Unohana in his army.

Ouko Yushima

Ex-member of the 12th divison and founder of the project Spearhead, therefore the inventor of Mod Souls. After the project he dedicated himself to was suspended by the Central 46, Ouko went mad and split his soul into two Mod Souls: Nozomi and Kageroza. Now that Nozomi and Inaba are one again he has regained his powers and his zanpakuto, Sumitsuki Gasa.

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Subverted; he's no better than Inaba, or even Nozomi when she first met Kon.
  • Bigger Bad: Since Inaba represents his darker side, it's ultimately Yushima that (indirectly) kickstarted the conflict in the Invading Army arc, and now that he's fused together with his counterparts, he's served as the Final Boss.

  • Blade on a Stick/Double Weapon: His Zanpakutou is a mix between Inaba's and Nozomi'Zanpakutou, making it a double headed glaive with straight blades and golden handle.

  • Shaping Your Attacks: His most powerful techniques takes this Up to Eleven, forming a giant palace made of energy.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Remember the space-manipulating powers displayed by Inaba and the energy-sucking powers of Nozomi? Yushima can do both things to a greater extent, and that's his Shikai!
  • The Man Behind the Man: Played with; Nozomi and Kageroza are two halves of his soul turned into Modsouls, and their actions are, ultimately, a result of their connection to his original mindset.
  • Too Many Belts: his new outfit at the end of episode 338 features a belt in the waist area and a smaller one in diagonal position under it. It's used to hold the sword sheathe, but the effect is the same.

A character from the first film, Memories of Nobody, Senna is a mysterious girl with Shinigami powers whom Ichigo and Rukia encounter in the world of the living. Her zanpakuto is Mirokumaru. It turns out that she is the Memory Rosary, the collected memories of all the "Blanks". Ganryu, the villain of the film, is trying to use her to collide the Soul Society with the world of the living. She sacrifices herself to prevent this.

Sojiro Kusaka

The main antagonist in the second film, The Diamond Dust Rebellion, Sojiro is an old friend and rival of Hitsugaya's, who attended the academy with him. It turned out that both of them had the zanpakuto Hyorinmaru, so in accordance with Soul Society laws, the two fought and Hitsugaya won.[2] Kusaka, bitter about this, sought to destroy Soul Society with the Royal Seal.

Ying and Yang

Two young, teenaged, twin-like Arrancar girls that serve as Kusaka's joint-lieutenants during his bid to wipe out the Seireitei. Ying's the one with blue hair, Yan has red hair.

Tropes associated with Ying and Yang:

  • Clothing Damage: Never shown receiving it on-screen, but last they show up as humans, pieces of their clothes are ripped and torn, revealing a generous amount of skin and bruises to the camera.
  • Co-Dragons: To Kusaka, who himself becomes a giant ice dragon at the climax of the film.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Both have one, modeled in a schoolgirl-like fashion, and apart from their One-Winged Angel forms, they always fight in 'em.
  • Detached Sleeves: Their sleeveless white jackets show off their shoulders rather nicely.
  • Elemental Powers: Yang has Playing with Fire, Ying has Shock and Awe; Yang can turn into a fireball, Ying can turn into a blue disk-like projectile. They even use their attacks in combination against Ichigo late into the second film, without much success.
  • Evil Is Stylish: As with most Arrancar, Yang and Ying have pretty cool outfits; for starters, this [dead link] is Yang's outfit. Picture that, but with blue instead of red, including the hair, with blue pigtails and a whip, and you've got Ying's outfit.
  • Facial Markings: Similar to Apacci, Yang has two red circles over her red eyes, and Ying has two blue circles over her blue eyes.
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: Yang (fire) and Ying (lightning) to Kosaka's Ice.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Unlike Loly, Ying has her pigtails descending downwards, instead of up.
  • Hot Chick with a Sword: Yang has a sword that is constantly engulfed in flames.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: They're even shorter than Rukia, and can still pack a punch.
  • Show Some Leg: If you look at the picture-link to Yan's outfit from above, you can see that the inner-side portion of her legs are exposed, as well as the upper half of her thighs; same applies for her sister.

  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness / You Have Failed Me...: After Kusaka fused with the Ouin and became a giant ice dragon, a battered, beaten Yang and Ying return to him, kneeling before him in slight embarrassment, before Kusaka nonchalantly froze them both.
    • Subverted, however, once we see two identical female-looking Hollows with the same abilities as Yang (fire) and Ying (electricity); by freezing them with the same ice that made up his dragon form, Kusaka essentially fused Yang and Ying together with him, allowing the energy from the Ouin to fully transform them into their Hollow forms and take on the Shinigami at the last act of the second film.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Very short schoolgirl-like skirts (red for Yang, blue for Ying), backed up by thigh-high sock-like stockings (red for Yang, blue for Ying), knee-high boots (black-colored with white outlines), arm-warmers (red for Yang, blue for Ying) and pigtails (for Ying).

Shizuku

He is Rukia's younger brother and one of the two main antagonists in the third movie. He erases people's memories of Rukia, as well as many of her own, in order to stay together with her forever, although he appears to be more emotionally stable than his sister.

She is Rukia's younger sister and her brother's older sister and one of the main antagonists in the third movie. She's highly possessive of Rukia, and wants to kill anyone who might come between the two of them.

  • Affably Evil: In spite of her issues, she's actually a nice, sweet young girl... but only to Rukia.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Rukia certainly felt this way about her and Shizuku, as did Ichigo, Renji, Urahara and Byakuya.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Shares the role of joint-antagonist with her younger brother, but usually doesn't participate in a fight, instead acting as backseat support in that regard. To compensate, she has the most screen time and dialogue out of the two siblings, mainly because of her interactions with Rukia throughout the movie. She caused quite a finale by fusing Shizuku and Rukia with herself and unleashing that Giant Mook of a Mayuri experiment on the captains and lieutenants. Bonus points for her being the very first female Big Bad in the series.
  • Blondes Are Evil: Okay, not evil, but she still has problems.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Not nearly as psychotic or extreme as Loly, but she had potential there, and a good excuse for it.
  • Creepy Child: Her hair and unnatural skin tone are pretty creepy.
  • Dangerously-Short Skirt: Always wore one, but never fight in it, though her Mass Teleportation is used to help Shizuku fight instead.
  • Dead All Along Killed and possessed by a hollow while protecting Rukia.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: To Rukia.

  • The Glomp: Fond of doing this with Rukia.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Took a hollow into their bodies to save Rukia from a possessed Shinigami
  • Jerkass Woobie: There's no denying that she was a stubborn, jealous, possessive and irrational teenage girl, that can get quite unstable, paranoid, and outright ruthless, with an almost-unhealthy obsession towards Rukia to boot, but for all her faults, she was a genuinely affectionate and cheerful girl, whose only wish was to reunite with the only other loved one she had. In fact, she wasn't even evil to begin with, just selfish, obsessive, naive and misguided, with a justifiable excuse for her implied hatred (and fear) of the Shinigami. Considering her past, her interactions with Rukia are all the more heartwarming; as an orphan, she was forced to survive on her own in a lawless slum district, ended up getting murdered by an (albeit mind-controlled) Shinigami, absorbed said mind-controlling hollow into herself as a fail-safe to keep it from killing Rukia (thereby making it into the subconscious source of her power), and unintentionally causing the now-innate hollow spirit energy to revive and transport them to Hueco Mundo, where she presumably spent most of her life relentlessly fighting for survival against hundreds of cannibalistic monsters in a dimension she knew nothing about, after forcing the still-barely alive hollow into submission, while she was barely over the age of ten.
  • Laura Bailey: Her English actress. Fans were pleased.
  • Magic Skirt: Really short skirt, but avoids any sort of Panty Shot from the camera.
  • Male Gaze: We get a nice shot of her well-rounded ass in her first appearance.
  • Mass Teleportation: Can not only teleport herself and other people, but can even teleport buildings.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name put together with Shizuku's means "a strong shine".
  • Ms. Fanservice: Milder compared to some of the other girls, but she's still pre~tty attractive.
  • Psycho Lesbian/Yandere :Very possibly, since she wants to kill all the Shinigami to keep them from coming between her and Rukia.
  • She's Got Legs: Dayum. And they're the focus of more than one shot.
  • Theme Twin Naming: In addition to the already-noted Meaningful Name, "Homura" means "flame" while "Shizuku" means "drop".

Kokuto

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (JP), Travis Willingham (EN)

A Togabito of Hell, damned due to commiting henous crimes for the sake of his dying sister that allies himself with Ichigo and his gang. After Ichigo defeats Shuren, Kokuto reveals himself to be the true Big Bad by impaling Ichigo, killing his friends, killing his little sister, and then taunting him with her corpse. They all get better towards the end and Ichigo seals him in the deepest pits of Hell.

Tropes associated with Kokuto:

  • Actor Allusion: An expert swordsman voiced by Kazuya Nakai? Sounds familiar...
  • Ax Crazy: Just...listen.
  • Badass: In a departure for Bleach characters in general, he almost completely lacks powers, magic, gimmicks, or power ups of any kind. He has only two tricks: He can whip around the Nigh Invulnerable chains connecting him to hell to defend from attacks, and he also has a generic sword beam that he rarely uses and never does anything significant with. Despite this, he's able to simultaneously take out three villains who gave Ichigo and co. a hard time and beat the shit out of Ichigo fairly easily using nothing but strength, skill, and quick thinking.
  • Batman Gambit: Upon witnessing Ichigo fighting Ulquiorra in his second hollow form. he quickly spread rumours about it in Hell, saying that it had the power to break open the gates of hell, hoping that someone would take advantage of that information and lure Ichigo to Hell. Guess what Shuren decides to do.
  • Big Bad: In the fourth movie, he's ultimately the one responsible for tricking Shuren into kidnapping Yuzu, but it isn't until the final act that we learn of it.
  • Big No: "KUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"
  • Bishounen: A nice-looking dude in his own right, until he takes off his bandages.
    • Body Horror: his entire right side of his face is burned, and there are fleshy dreadlocks on the side that connects with his white hair.
  • Chewing the Scenery: How Kazuya Nakai didn't need lung surgery after all the screaming he did in this film is anyone's guess.
  • Complete Monster: Kokuto deliberately invokes this attitude specifically to get Ichigo to break his chains through a Cero from his second Hollow form. To show how effective he was at it, we'll give a comparison - at least Aizen never killed Ichigo's little sister and taunted him with her dead body.
    • But Aizen wanted to kill his friend and hang their bodies for Ichigo to see, even if he didn't in the end. It's the thoughts that counts.
  • Cool Sword: Wields a black katana-like sword.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Kills three of the main characters in 30 seconds.
  • Dead Little Sister: His reason for helping Ichigo's gang rescue Yuzu from Shuren is because he once had a little sister who died because he failed to save her. Her murder was his Start of Darkness and he later invokes this trope by killing Yuzu (Ichigo's little sister).
  • Death by Irony: His true objective is to break open the gates of Hell and break the chains connected to his body that keep him down there. The only thing strong enough to do both of these is the Cero of Ichigo's second hollow form. Once Ichigo destroys the rest of Kokuto's chains, a bunch more chains to sprout out of the crater left by Ichigo, which then literally drag Kokuto down into the deepest pits of Hell.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: His voice actor is the same for Zoro's, whose biggest rival has a sword named Kokuto Yoru. Eye-candy for the Yaoi Fangirl, likely foreshadowing Zoro's attainment of "best swordsman in the world", and a Shout-Out to their eventual, but brief team-up.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Technically, dragged deeper into Hell.
  • Expy: His betrayal and defeat are very similar to Aizen. After they turned to be Not Quite Dead, they reveal their betrayal by stabbing someone (Aizen -> Momo/Kokuto -> Ichigo), and they pretty much destroy someone close to the victim (Aizen -> Hitsugaya/Kokuto -> Rukia, Uryu, Renji and Yuzu). Both are defeated by Ichigo's new super powered form (Final Getsuga Tensho/Skullclad Form) using a new technique (Mugetsu/Flaming Getsuga), and after they survive the attack (albiet left with great injuries from it), they still think they've won, only to be sealed away.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Variation, after his Face Heel Turn he removes his bandages and opens his shirt to expose his scars.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Japanese Version.
  • Face Heel Turn: In case it wasn't obvious by this point.
  • Facial Horror: His Scar.
    • Make that Body Horror, His scar doesn't just cover his face, it covers the entire right side of his body.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Honestly getting a bit tired of typing dragged into the deepest pits of Hell over here.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: The reason he wears bandages over one side of face? He's hiding THIS.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Uses on the chains attached to his sword to drag Taikon into a pit of lava and pulls Gonjo in using his own tentacles, seemingly killing all three of them. It turns out he lived, but things only got worse from there.
  • Hero-Killer: It's only really shown by the time of his Face Heel Turn, where he demolishes the entire Five-Man Band single-handed. He even takes it literally; he's got the highest body count of named characters within the series: slices Garogai in half, dumps Gunjo and Taikon into lava, slashes (what's left of) Shuren apart, stabs straight through Rukia, Ishida and Renji without a problem, and apparently gutted Yuzu offscreen.
  • For the Evulz: He kills Renji, Uryu, Rukia and Yuzu. Why? Just to piss Ichigo off. Somewhat Subverted though once you realize that Kokuto specifically wanted Ichigo to get angry and desperate enough to turn transform into his second hollow form as a Cero from that would destroy his chains and release him from Hell.
  • Implacable Man: Crosses over to Nigh Invulnerability. He gets dumped into a pool of lava and his clothes don't even get charred; he laughs off two direct blasts from Ichigo's Super Hollow Form, and survives a point blank Flaming Getsuga Tensho. In the end, he's not even killed - just sealed away.
  • Late Arrival Spoiler: Played Bleach Soul Resurrección? Then you already know everything about him before the movie's even out, pretty much ruining The Reveal that HE'S EVIL.
  • Lava Is Boiling Kool-Aid: Getting dumped into a pool of lava doesn't slow him down one bit.
  • Love Makes You Evil: He loved his little sister, so much so that avenging her death got him sent to hell which made him the way he is.
  • Magic Pants: He gets dunked in a pool of lava and emerges from it completely unharmed; his clothes aren't even charred, let alone burned.
  • Kokuto Debuted in Bleach Soul Resurrección
  • Multicolored Hair: The hair we can see is white, the hair underneath his bandages is grey.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: According to himself, he's on a permanent one of these.
  • Sixth Ranger: Exclusively for the fourth film; he ends up joining Ichigo's gang against the Togabito for the duration of the movie.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The last trailer for Hell Chapter had no problem in establishing that Kokuto makes a Face Heel Turn despite it being a major Plot Twist, The trailer even opened up with the scene of Kokuto taunting Ichigo with Yuzu's corpse.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Opens his shirt towards the end of the film, Played straight towards the end where his shirt is destoyed.
  • White-Haired Pretty Boy: If you can overlook the giant scar, that is...

Shuren

Voiced by: Tohru Furuya (JP)

The ringleader of a Togabito (Denizens of Hell) band that wants to break their chains keeping them inside Hell. He himself is the most normal-looking one of the bunch.

  • Adaptation Dye Job: Variation. The shackle around his neck is grey in the anime but red in the manga and the actual movie.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Thinks that he's only one to push Ichigo to his breaking point and force him to break open the gates of Hell, when in actuality, he was just playing into Kokuto's Batman Gambit.
  • Bishounen: By far the most attractive Togabito amongst his team.
    • And with Kokuto's huge scar, I think it's safe to call him the most attractive Togabito of all.
  • Canon Immigrant: Shuren and his Togabito are the only movie characters to appear in both the manga and the anime (albiet in a Spin-off chapter/filler episode).
  • Did Not Do the Research: In-universe example; he believes all he needs to do is break open the gates of hell to escape, but Kokuto later reveals that the chains on their body bind them to hell, so just destroying the gate wouldn't do much good.
  • Disk One Final Boss: He's the villain for the first hour or so of the movie, then Kokuto quickly takes over the spot rather for the last act.
  • Evil Redhead
  • Large Ham: Not as much as Kokuto but he has his moments.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: Nearly every trailer for the movie had him say "Welcome to Hell". It's actually Kokuto who says this.
  • No Body Left Behind: Kokuto makes sure of that....
  • The Nameless: Variation. He doesn't reveal his name until about 50 minutes into the movie, which basically green-lit his death scene. Subverted if you read/watched the prologue (a special one-off chapter titled "Bleach imaginary 01 and Episode 299 of the anime).
    • The Faceless: Again, save for one moment where we see his eye and a lock of hair, we don't see his face until 50 minutes into the movie; again subverted if you read/watched the prologue.
  • No Kill Like Overkill: Ichigo takes him out by Hollowfying, slashing through his chest, and then while he's doing that, unleashing an absolutely massive Getsuga Tensho (it reaches from the ground up the top of Hell, i.e. the sky) that essentially drags him along as it goes. A minute or so later, you see it hit the edge of Hell in the background where it detonates, causing an explosion the size of a nuke.
  • Only Mostly Dead: He, along with all the other Togabito ramp this Up to Eleven. Killing him means squat as he'll just be reborn in a pool of lava in the bottom level of hell. The only way to kill him for good is to destroy his regenerating body before it's fully reformed, which Kokuto proceeded to do.
  • Peek-a-Bangs
  • Playing with Fire: Seems to be able to control fire.
  • The Worf Barrage: The largest amount of damage his fire based attacks cause is ripping Ichigo's shirt. Then again, Shuren himself said that he wouldn't kill Ichigo with those fire blasts; it's subverted since it was his own decision not to make them as powerful.
    • Hoist by His Own Petard: Had he actually gone all-out from the start in that instance, he would've killed Ichigo. Since Shuren chose to dick around, Ichigo managed to outmaneuver him by their last bout.
  • Smug Snake: Boasts for the most part of the movie, has a brief five minute long fight with Ichigo, and gets defeated right after.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Recent pieces merchandise in Japan (Trading Cards, Posters, etc) have spelled his name as Syuren.

A Togabito with a giant black sword that assists in fighting Ichigo for the first part of the film, before losing his mask and getting forced back into Hell.

  • Blade on a Stick and BFS: Fights Ichigo with a massive halbeard with a rectangular blade.
  • Gonk: Despite being quite human-looking under the mask (unlike his colleagues), he's no looker.

Villain of the Wii fighting game Bleach: Shattered Blade. Sealed away within his sword due to his power, the shards of the titular shattered blade are inevitably collected over the course of the main story, and he must be defeated to end the chaos. In the DS strategy RPG Bleach: The 3rd Phantom, the battle in which he is sealed is shown in full, and it's revealed that the Kudo twins and Suzunami siblings played vital roles in his defeat.

Seigen Suzunami

A Soul Reaper from the DS game Bleach: The 3rd Phantom. Captain of the 5th division before Urahara was kicked out of Soul Society, Seigen is convinced by his sister to adopt twin souls after he, Urahara, and Aizen save them from Hollows. However, after he and the Kudo twins try to stop Arturo from invading soul society, they mysteriously disappear and are not seen again for hundreds of years. He's fought by the main characters and also merge with giant Menos Grande to increase his power.

Matsuri Kudo

Zanpakutou: Kotomaru

The main female protagonist of the DS game Bleach: The 3rd Phantom. After she and her twin brother were targeted by a gang of Hollows due to the rarity of twin souls, the kids were adopted by Seigen. Taking Urahara's advice, the twins decided to repay Seigen's kindness by becoming Soul Reapers and joining his unit. However, after trying to defeat Arturo, the Kudo twins and Seigen are sent into the future.

If Matsuri is the main character, she awakens in Karakura town just in time to help Ichigo save Shiyo's life. Afterwards, she takes Shiyo to Soul Society, and soon discovers that Seigen and Fujimaru have also awoken. Unfortunately, they have sided with Aizen to seek vengeance for Soul Society being too weak and having to sacrifice Konoka in the Arturo fight.

Konoka Suzunami

Seigen Suzunami's sister, who has mysterious healing abilities. After convincing Seigen to adopt the Kudo twins, she acts like a mother towards them. Unfortunately, she is also the only person in Soul Society capable of using an artifact that weakens Arturo's power, and it puts her life in grave danger.

  • Anti-Magic: The Shisui Mirror can suck spiritual energy, including the one of Arturo.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Died when the Shisui Mirror absorbed her soul along with Arturo's powers. Her spirit is actually sealed inside Shiyo.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko

Shiyo

A spirit from Bleach: The 3rd Phantom. After Ichigo, Don Kanonji, and one of the Kudo twins save her from Hollows, it's revealed that she has amnesia. Additionally, unlike other spirits, she cannot be affected by Kanso, and must be escorted to Soul Society.
