This isn't limited to living things either. Rule of thumb is it it's a person, place, animal, thing or concept which was at least mentioned once, it has at least 3 shipping partners. Fun examples include Isaac with the roof he spent 3 years repairing, some characters with their psychic powers or weapons and Kraden with himself. - Flash Cutter |

Latest revision as of 21:47, 27 September 2023
This is simply what you think is the (not some of the, the) best example of any trope (an objective trope, not subjective, since this already is subjective). The "Crowning Example" if you will.
There could be several reasons you think an example is the best.
- You thinks it's the best in terms of illustrating the trope.
- You think it's the most well done.
- It's your favorite play in that trope.
- You just really like the source material.
Oh, and each troper gets one example per trope, no more. Also, don't go "no, this is," or phrases like that. This is about our own personal favorites. ---
Please list tropes alphabetically.
- Sacrificial Lion
- Digimon Each season of the Anime, Leomon dies. Rumor has it, that that Leomon in the background of the final fight of 02 is the same Leomon as Adventure, and despite the all the Digimon that come to help fight never do anything, that Leomon still dies.
- Aslan is likely the Trope Namer.
- How about Mufasa from The Lion King? He's an actual lion!
- Sadistic Choice
- Virmire
- Sophies Choice
- Seconded
- In Famous Trish or a bunch of doctors. Whatever happens, Trish dies.
- The choice Spidey faced in the first Spider-Man movie.
- That box contains your wings. You can take them and leave the game or you can carry on aimlessly wandering this maze. Your choice.
- Sadist Teacher
- Severus Snape, especially in the early books.
- Dolores Umbridge. "I must not tell lies"
- Agatha Trunchbull, of Matilda fame. Almost makes Umbridge look as sweet as she wishes she were.
- Seconded. She terrified me as a child.
- DOOOOOOGEE
- Sampling
- Since I Left You, by The Avalanches. The entire album is made out of samples.
- Samus Is a Girl
- The Trope Namer itself.
- Sand Is Water
- Wild ARMs 3 features a world in which even the massive oceans themselves are comprised of sand that you can ride a battleship on and fight dragons!
- Sanity Slippage
- HI TROPERS! CAN YOU HELP ME SEE AN EXAMPLE OF SANITY SLIPPAGE?
- I see your Twilight Sparkle, and raise you a "I HAVE TO BLOW EVERYTHING UP! IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO PROVE I'M NOT CRAZY!"
- Sarcasm Mode
- Fawlty Towers: "Oh?? And may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window?? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeests sweeping majestically..." -Ziggy Zag
- Sarcastic Clapping
- "Oh, thank you, Beowulf, for coming to save us poor pathetic Danes."
- Mortal Kombat: Raiden, when he points out to the heroes that there are even MORE Mooks to beat up. (They had just finished beating a good number of them and were somewhat tired out.)
- Oh, good. My slow clap processor made it into this thing. So we have that.
- -Seconded
- Saved From Development Hell
- Duke Nukem Forever. Snowstorm season is still on in Hell.
- I don't even have interest in non- iD FPS games, and I still took notice of this game coming out!
- The Volkswagen Beetle. Original design: 1932. Proof-of-concept testing: 1933. Design finalized and tooling ordered: 1938. First car delivered to retail customer: 1948.
- Duke Nukem Forever. Snowstorm season is still on in Hell.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl
- Carl and Ellie. Bonus points for following the relationship into marriage and adulthood.
- Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey.
- Say My Name
- STEEEELLLLLAAAAAAAAA!!!
- Side one of John and Yoko's wedding album. "JOHN! YOKO! JOHN! YOKO!"
- "LIQUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!!!" "SNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!!!"
- "SINDRIIIIIIIIII!"
- "KHAAAAN!!!!"
- Angel Beats! KANADEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! The most heartwrenching example ever...
- The bridge scene in Season 1 episode 13 of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha—aNinjaWithAIDS
- JACK! ROSE!
- Scaled Up
- Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. Full stop.
- Megumi Kitaniji
- Jafar.
- Scapegoat Creator:
- Poor Seth MacFarlane.
- Dan Schneider.
- Scare Chord
- Lost. Holy crap.
- NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!
- Psycho
- !
- The scraping, prolonged, horrific one in the diner scene in Mulholland Drive. -Ziggy Zag
- Scarily Competent Tracker
- The Sniffers in Push use a ten year old toothbrush to find the main character.
- Scenery Porn
- Lawrence of Arabia. I mean that in only the best way. -Ziggy Zag
- The Conformist
- Far Cry
- Aria (since the term was originally used to described ARIA in blogosphere, it makes perfect sense)
- Ecco the Dolphin. All of them. Even Ecco Jr. Even Defender of the Future.
- Hayao Miyazaki films, notably Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service
- Seconded.
- Absolutely thirding this.
- 5 Centimeters Per Second. Especialy the first couple shots of each act.
- Waaaaaaaay seconded!
- Hell, most of Makoto Shinkai's works.
- Myst, yo.
- Anything produced by Kyoto Animation, particularly their adaptations of AIR, Kanon, and Clannad.
- Shadow of the Colossus is just Scenery Porn with the occasional boss fight.
- The The Lord of the Rings movies.
- Infinite Undiscovery
- Kara. No. Fucking. Kyoukai.
- Baten Kaitos. - Malkyrian
- Both Ghost in the Shell movies.
- Little Nemo in Slumberland
- Sonic Unleashed
- Heck, how about the whole Sonic the Hedgehog series? Even the original Genesis games have a level of artistic detail that even games made today have trouble matching.
- Halo is the king of this when it comes to absolutely monumental alien architecture.
- Okami, aka Scenery Porn: The Game. My eyes are glued to the screen for every Cutscene.
- Dresden Codak has some crazy sceneries
- Probably not quite my pick in terms of "raw pretty," but Bethesda Softworks managed to take the city of Washington, D.C., shower it in nuclear bombs, and still make it oddly beautiful, all the while fully subverting the Real Is Brown effect exhibited by not quite half of the other areas in the game. That takes talent.[1]
- Mass Effect 2. Look out the window and admire the futuristic elegance of Illium or the filthy, gritty beauty of Omega, and you'll be too distracted by the scenery to focus on the mission. This game manages to make each place seem much bigger than it is and perfectly evokes the atmosphere of every location, from the ship junkyard Korlus to the prison ship Purgatory.
- Scenery Gorn
- "Australia. What fresh hell is this?"
- Fallout
- Saya no Uta
- Far Cry 2. If you accidentally start the grassland on fire it can kill you quickly and easily.
- The Road, both the book and the movie
- Schedule Slip
- Hunter X Hunter
- Warbot in Accounting
- Season 4 of iCarly: Season 3. 18 episodes in 6 months. Season 4? Started in July 2010. Will end at the end of July 2011. 9 episodes only.
- Schmuck Bait
- School Swimsuit
- Winn's EWI Fan Vids. You get Touhou, school swimsuits, CMOHs, CMOFs, school swimsuits, the occasional CMOA, and school swimsuits. Did I mention school swimsuits already?
- School Uniforms Are the New Black
- Season 10 of Degrassi. Really? Nobody wears a regular T-shirt under the school polo and takes the latter off as soon as they leave the building? Nobody? This in a school where the uniform was introduced in the middle of a school year as punishment for a few students' bad behavior, in a country where they are by no means the norm? Really?
- Science-Related Memetic Disorder
- Soon I Will Be Invincible ("Malign Hypercognition Disorder")
- Seconding that, with a side of Girl Genius.
- Seconding Girl Genius.
- Thirding.
- A Miracle of Science.
- Narbonic.
- The Scrappy
- Scrappy-Dappy-Doooo!!!
- Hey, it looks like you're writing a letter! - Malkyrian
- Makoto Itou.
- The dog from Duck Hunt.
- Lee Linjun. Jerkass Neidermeyer? Check. Useless in a fight? Check. Half-assed tragic backstory for which he blames a much more likeable character? Check. Turns traitor and kills the Badass Grandpa with a cheap shot? Check. He may not be the best known Scrappy, but dammit, he's trying the hardest!
- Meesa called Jar Jar Binks! Meesa your humble servant!
- The Scream
- Vegeta, Dragon Ball Abridged 18, right as soon as he finds out Gohan took a Dragon Ball.
- Seconded, it can be heard in the afterlife, in space and in the future!
- Thirded. It wasn't just the future, it was an alternate timeline!
- Seconded, it can be heard in the afterlife, in space and in the future!
- Edvard Munsch

- Screaming Woman
- Screams Like a Little Girl
- Miguel & Tulio
- Psych
- Nozomu Itoshiki- no wonder the girls didn't acknowledge him as a man - Jordan

- Gordon to Pago in Gear. Says this phrase verbatum, and then knocks them both off a cliff and literally into Hell. "I see youuuuuuu!".
- Allen O'Neill from Metal Slug. And yet, he always manages to see you next back in the physical world...
- Han Solo to... some unnamed guy on Hoth in Episode V just before he rides out on a Taun-Taun to find Luke.
- Scorchio to Light in Death Note
- Seinfeldian Conversation
- Self-Proclaimed Liar
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Elim Garak, hands down: even in-universe, his ability for obfuscation is legend. And the best thing is, because everyone expects him to lie about everything (and he actively encourages everyone to believe this), it means no-one can tell which lies are the important ones!
Worf: "But why all the deception?" |
- Sentient Phlebotinum
- Sequel Hook
- From Kick-Ass "A world of Superheroes, huh? Well, as a great man once said, Wait'll they get a load of Me."
- Sequelitis
- Jaws:The Revenge. The first movie has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while this has a rating of 0% rating on RT. It simply CAN NOT get any worse than that.
- Highlander. Hell, Highlander II the Quickening ALONE is enough to qualify it. -ZuulMF
- The Land Before Time
- Serial Killer Killer
- Light Yagami - duh1177
- Dexter Morgan - Two Gun Angel
- Serial Escalation
- Asura's Wrath. Even though the game hasn't come out, the sheer types of different gameplay, the scale, the amount of strength, determination, and power the main character has, everything about it takes the Action Genre of video games to a completely new level of ridiculousness.
- Series Fauxnale
- Power Rangers - wswordsmen
- Media Franchise

- Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll
- Sex Is Violence
- Saeko Bushijima "I'm Wet."
- Sexy Backless Outfit
- Shanoa
- The Tomb Raider movie -Ziggy Zag
- Tsubaki
- Sexy Jester
- Shallow Love Interest
- Edward and Bella. It counts as one example because if they were fused together, they'd still only have half a personality.
- Shameless Self Promotion
- This Troper wants you to check out his page!
- Sharing a Body
- Sora of Kingdom Hearts. Not only has he housed Ventus's heart since he was a small child, but he had Kairi's for most of the first game. Finally, in addition to Ven, he also has Roxas (and Xion by proxy) and possibly even Vanitas calling his body home.
- Jeez, if he charged rent, he'd be a millionaire.
- Yugi
- Sora of Kingdom Hearts. Not only has he housed Ventus's heart since he was a small child, but he had Kairi's for most of the first game. Finally, in addition to Ven, he also has Roxas (and Xion by proxy) and possibly even Vanitas calling his body home.
- Shipping
- Judging by the trope pictures in Ship-to-Ship Combat, Launcher of a Thousand Ships and Fan-Preferred Couple (not to mention the page quote for Ship Tease), I'm going to have to say Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not sure if that's a good thing, though.
- iCarly takes the vitriol of the Avatar community, takes away the artistic side of things, then pumps up the online fandom war up to eleven, then stretches it out over the last four years, with no end in sight until probably 2012.
- Naruto.
- Though, generally, not as fierce or dedicated to protecting their ships, Golden Sun fans are notable in their ability to ship everything with everything. - Flash Cutter

- Sepiroth's Supernova attack from Final Fantasy VII must be the Most Triumphant Example of this one: a two-minute long attack that calls down a ball of energy (or something) from outside the galaxy, vaporises Pluto, destroys the rings of Saturn, punches a hole clean through Jupiter (which explodes) and makes the Sun go nova, swallowing Mercury and Venus and reducing the Earth to chunks of rock. This is worse than the disaster the heroes are trying to prevent, but the gameplay mechanics mean it just can't kill the characters, and can even miss - so he gets another go at destroying the Solar System all over again later.

In a game based on melee combos and grapples, this T-1000 with breasts can hit you from across the screen with a lightning-fast, unblockable attack that knocks off about half your life bar. The trick seems to be that she becomes mysteriously incompetent in one battle out of every twenty; you just have to wait until it happens.

It was written and narrated by a six and a half-year-old and animated to match, down to every meandering tic the narrative takes. - Jonathan Creek is one of the "best" examples, but not really in a good way. Over the course of the series, he had three female partners, all forms of Intrepid Reporter and all having a Slap Slap Kiss relationship with him.
