Latest revision as of 03:22, 14 April 2023
This is simply what you think is the (not some of the, the) best example of any trope (an objective trope, not subjective, since this already is subjective). The "Crowning Example" if you will.
There could be several reasons you think an example is the best.
- You thinks it's the best in terms of illustrating the trope.
- You think it's the most well done.
- It's your favorite play in that trope.
- You just really like the source material.
Oh, and each troper gets one example per trope, no more. Also, don't go "no, this is," or phrases like that. This is about our own personal favorites.
Please list tropes alphabetically.
G
- Gadgeteer Genius
- The one and only Q. Do try and bring this trope back in one piece, 007...
- Satomi Hakase.
- Agatha Heterodyne
- Seconded.
- Dave Davenport
- Every single one of the Kids Next Door but especially Numbah 2.
- Forge
- The MythBusters for a Real Life example. How in hell else do you explain cannons made of duct tape that actually fire?!
- Gag Boobs
- SHIZUKA MARIKAWA!
- Any and all of Eiken
- Boobie Lady
- TOMO YAMANOBE Boobs Puppets
- Gag Dub
- MXC, the immortal Gag Dub of Takeshi's Castle. - Beta Maxis
- Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series
- Super Sentai
- Pokémon's Mexican dub
- Digimon Adventure's English dub, except when the stakes were really high
- Wizard People, Dear Reader
- Samurai Pizza Cats
- Gag Penis
- Three Socks
- Suburban Knights
- A HORSE WEINER!
- Now that's dangerous!
- Gag Sub
- Downfall. One way to make Adolf Hitler look funny.
- Gainax Ending
- The Prisoner - "Fall Out".
- The one, the only, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
- Eraserhead. Just... what?
- Mother 3
- 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- Mass Effect 3. Hopefully soon to be remedied in the "We're sorry we fucked up the ending DLC"
- Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt
- Gainaxing
- Happens almost every frame in Highschool of the Dead, but there's this one scene that takes the cake. A Bullet passing very close to Saeko doing some combat-acrobatics, while the boobs jiggle synchronizedly so they don't get hit. In Slow Motion!
- Gambit Pileup
- Heist. And although I do recognize that Tropes Are Not Bad, I still mean that in only the worst way. It is more like the least triumphantly yet still most extreme example. -ZuulMF
- Code Geass specifically the second half of Season 2.
- WITCH The whole second season. And it's awesome. Thank you Gerg Wiseman.
- The Ivalice Alliance (more specifically, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII, which share a common timeline, even if no one can figure out exactly what happened when).
- Dune. Almost every major faction or character has elaborate schemes with multiple contingencies in place in order to achieve their goals. Some of these plans extend literally thousands of years into the future.
- The Wheel of Time series. Hell, if there are less than literally thirty different plans taking place in the Seanchan court alone, I'll be surprised. And compared to the Forsaken, the Aes Sedai, the various nobles of Cairhien, Andor, Tear etc. and the Children of the Light, they don't even get that much screen time. And that's still leaving out Rand and his direct, more or less unambiguous supporters. And Padan Fain/Mordeth/Ordeith. And... okay, you get the picture.
- Allo Allo How hard can it be to steal one painting and send two British men home? Very.
- Game Breaker
- Jack "That Damn Guy You Can Stab With Swords All You Like And It Won't Do A Thing, Dammit" Rakan.
- Black Luster Soldier--Envoy of the Beginning. Chaos Emperor Dragon--Envoy of the End. Banned for a DAMN GOOD REASON.
- Synchro monsters. Oh god synchro monsters.
- Aizen Sosuke. As if being far physically, magically, and intellectually stronger than everyone else wasn't enough, he's a Master Of Illusions too.
- The End
- The Holsety spell tome in Fire Emblem : Seisen no Keifu.
- Blackbeard
- Metal Blades
- Orlandu. A previously Nintendo Hard game abruptly becomes a walk in the park unless you simply refuse to use him.
- Armageddon. It even turns The Reaper into a joke.
- Game of Nerds
- Gargle Blaster
- The best one is drunk by Steve from Life and Death here.
- Gatling Good
- Real Life: The GAU-8 Avenger
- The Minigun from Predator.
- General Ripper
- Admiral Akainu would like to know why he was just added here
- Admiral Helena Cain
- Genius Bonus
- Futurama. The episode "The Prisoner Of Benda" actually had writer Ken Keeler create a new math theorem. Top that.
- Okay, how about Irregular Webcomic, where the author discussions have included an explanation of Banach-Tarski.
- Genetic Engineering Is the New Nuke
- Dr. Manhattan. Silk Spectre I even points out to her daughter that she's "sleeping with an H-bomb."
- Genius Bruiser
- Genius Loci
- Mogo
- The house from the 1986 movie House
- Danny the Street
- The House Of Leaves
- Silent Hill.
- Genki Girl
- Genre Busting
- Suzumiya Haruhi
- Godel Escher Bach
- Thursday Next
- The Big Lebowski
- Tangerine Dream -Ziggy Zag
- Cowboy Bebop
- Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
- Doctor Who; Its a sci-fi horrific romantic comedy adventure with forays into fantasy.- Completely Different
- Genre Deconstruction
- Neon Genesis Evangelion: Deconstructing the Super Robot genre, the human psyche and YOUR BRAIN, all at once!
- Watchmen. Every superhero story ever since, basically, has been a response to it.
- Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: The Evangelion of Gaming and Sports Anime And Manga.
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Evangelion of Magical Girl.
- A Song of Ice and Fire is far and away the best deconstruction of epic fantasy.
- School Days, or when harems go wrong.
- Genre Shift
- Mahou Sensei Negima. There's a very good reason that it's the picture on the Genre Shift page.
- Medaka Box. Light-hearted student council comedy to OMF WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING?!
- Wapsi Square. Nowhere else has an element phased in so slowly come to dominate so thoroughly. When's the last time a member of the original cast was even seen other than Monica, Shelly, and Tina?
- Gentleman Detective
- Professor Layton
- Lord Peter Wimsey, the original detective who was a true British gentleman
- Geodesic Cast
- Homestuck. There are four kids, each with a guardian, a kernelsprite, and an exile. And then there's the twelve trolls, who also have corresponding guardians (Lusii), kernelsprites, and exiles, although eleven of their kernelsprites are prototyped with their Lusii and the remaining one is dead. We also only see five of their exiles, but they all have a counterpart in the kids' session. Then there's other characters, such as the Dersites and Prospitians, who are mirrors of each other, and Becquerel and Doc Scratch.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff
- Maes Hughes
- Late 1980s/early 1990s anime in Spain, Italy and Latin America.
- Americans Love Bastard-Godfather-Marine-Knight-Criminal-Superstrong-Pirates that blow up countries and then take control over a nuclear weapon, or kill people by touching/ choking the f*ck out of them, or screw around with everybody else's plans because they feel like going Kuahahaha, and are named Crocodile.
- Americans love Rammstein - g3m1n1
- Jon Fucking Talbain. Get a clue, Capcom!
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!
- The almighty Signum Punch -- "I held back" indeed...
- For Gundam, it's a tie for the illustrious Bright Noah's patented Bright Slap and Jamil, whose words are quoted on the page.
- Simon teleporting (one of only two instances of such a feat) and punching out Rossiu.
- I second that, although Kamina's "GRINT THOSE TEETH" moment was also pretty awesome.
- Dr. Rick Dagless, MD, punching Liz in the face at every possible opportunity.
- Toy Story, made especially hilarious because he used Buzz's own arm to do it.
- Getting Crap Past the Radar
- 30 Rock, hands down. A show that can slip "It wouldn't be a Lemon Party without old Dick!" past censors and moral guardians on prime-time network television is going to be a tough act to follow.
- Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. The Angry Video Game Nerd said it best about the crotch-grabbing move: "Why would you put that in a game!? How could you put that in a game?!"
- Rocko's Modern Life.
- Seconded. A few episodes had Rocko working at a phone sex hotline. Even Animaniacs could never push things that far. --
- Arrested Development, anyone? With such lines as "If mother sees this, she will blow a cow." and "That's not a Volvo.", the show might have reached new ground in Radar territory.
- ReBoot during the first two seasons. "Capacitor is flaccider," anyone?
- The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy Along with many, many, many, other examples: they spoofed, shot for shot, When Harry Met Sally... 's faking an orgasm scene. Yeah.
- Avatar: The Last Airbender. Snuck a sexual prelude scene onto TV-Y7.
- Especially since they gave him a flower necklace in his next scene. Y'know, just in case you weren't positive that he got lei'd.
- Also, consider the B-plot in "Nightmares and Daydreams."
- Animaniacs. It's like a sport. - Beta Maxis, Voodoo Child'
- Seconded. No other show that I know of has made references to "making the censors cry."
- Colette's briefest of eye-flicks in Ratatouille
- The scene in the Phineas and Ferb episode "Dude, We're Getting The Band Back Together!", when Vanessa freaks out after finding that her father invited all of the friends to her birthday party, including the boy she's crushing on. She rants "You did WHAT? I don't want them to see this! I'm a teenager - this is for a little girl! Don't you know me at all!" As she says the word 'teenager', she looks down at her breasts and holds her hands in front of herself to emphasize her chest - and to make things even worse, Doofennsmirtz can't pull his eyes away while Perry, in an immediate cut-away, is staring wide-eyed in Vanessa's direction. That scene's not just getting crap past the radar, it's using a cloaking device the size of a planet!
- Blazing Saddles. It pretty much set the record for censorship-barrier breaks in western cinema. Ziggy Zag
- Mr. Mop and Mrs. Bucket Uguu. . .
- The DCAU.
- Hey Arnold!
- The Powerpuff Girls, where a five-year-old girl learns "Whenever their masculinity is threatened, they shrink in size!" after she and a sister have been symbolically raped
- Mana-Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy. Started by the main male character is dressed in his sleep by the resident Ojou, and never ends.
- "Let's have another."
- Dan Schneider. Hard to pick a specific series let alone instPance.
- If we must pick one, I'd vote for Victorious, seeing as two episodes generated enough innuendo for that show to merit it's own Radar page.
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Remember this was made by Disney and the animators got away with this - Girlonethemoon
- Adventure Time
- Seconded.
- The Victorian striptease in The Great Mouse Detective.
- The Giant
- Giant Mook
- Giving Someone the Pointer Finger
- Glad I Thought of It
- Glasses Pull
- The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry
- Jo and Amy March of Little Women
- Bianca and Katherina from The Taming of the Shrew.
- Glurge
- It's a Wonderful Life. So very heavy-handed and sentimental -- and yet, proof that even this trope is not necessarily bad. - Heart Burn Kid
- Of course, this trope can be very bad.
- Gone with the Wind. Pure glurge, but it's downright heart-filling. -Ziggy Zag
- Fern Gully
- God
- Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty managed to take the role and make it work. -Ramidel
- A God Am I
- Enel/Eneru. The ability to turn into/use lightning at will? Check. The ability to "hear" anything within an extremely large radius, amplified by said lightning powers? Check. The severe lack of any material that can counteract these abilities? Ladies and gentlemen, we have an semi-all-powerful psychopath!
- Second.
- Light Yagami
- God Is Flawed
- Both Tron and Tron: Legacy tied this one to the back of a light-cycle and went full speed. The Master Control was a chess program that went A God Am I in the system. Then, Flynn gets in and finds out Programs regard Users the same way we regard Gods. He tries to set Tron and Yori straight about it...but then makes the mistake of whipping up Clu 2.0...
- God Mode Sue
- Tendou Souji. Walking the path of heaven, ruling over all by obtaining upgrades from the future and making cooking and grandmother's teachings epic.
- Goddamned Bats
- La-Mulana - Artman 40 - For most of the enemies being only a large nuisance instead of a threat and game mechanics contributing to that.
- Medusa Heads,
- Zubat
- Tentacool
- Geodude
- The Keese from The Legend of Zelda
- Cliff Racers from Morrowind
- Goldfish Poop Gang
- Good All Along
- Good Bad Bugs
- Good Bad Translation
- Aero Fighters. Who doesn't love frying over a jungle?
- Final Fantasy Tactics.

- Batman -Kriegsmesser, Ziggy Zag
- Granny Weatherwax
- Sam Vimes, as well

- Jack and the Lava Monster - FREE.
- Hoenheim from Fullmetal Alchemist
- Gorn
- Gory Discretion Shot
- The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which has barely a drop of blood onscreen, but never feels any less horrifying because of it.
- For similiar reasons, the original Halloween
- The Dark Knight - this is pretty much the only thing that saved it from an R-rating. -Gwen Stacy Wannabe, deeman 45
- Batman: Arkham Asylum did the very same, except with Bloodless Carnage, and it probably avoided the same end as a result.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion. And then your imagination makes it worse.
- Doctor Who: "The Sound of Drums". The Master's reaction sells it.
- The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which has barely a drop of blood onscreen, but never feels any less horrifying because of it.
- Grande Dame
- Margaret Dumont, in the Marx Brothers' films.
- Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest-

- Seconded. That Stealth Pun alone was genius.
- Almost EVERYTHING about Parsee says this - her title, her first spellcard (which is ridiculously hard for stage 2 - AND EVEN USED ON EASY)- her personality - SHE EVEN HAS GREEN EYES!
- Green Rocks
- Binchotite. It not only gets New Powers as the Plot Demands (from making floating islands to being refined into fuel to capturing people to powering Musashi's special abilities to making Super Soldiers), it's also green, and a rock (when exposed to air).
- You HAVE to admit Kryptonite is the original example.
- You require more Vespene Gas!
- Grey and Grey Morality
- Rose of the Prophet. Despite a setting where there are gods and their factions of followers who are specifically labelled as "good", "evil" and "neutral", nothing is ever in black and white. Even a man who borders on a Complete Monster in his actions can still be a powerful, trustworthy and even admirable ally. The final conflict is fought, not between the forces of good and evil, but the forces of chaotic neutral and lawful neutral.

It helps that this is set to the most epic Crowning Music of Awesome EVER.

- The Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy adventure game. There are probably grown men out there who will still break down crying at the very mention of the phrase "Babel Fish.".
- Final Fantasy, the higher the number, the worse it gets. While not necessarily needed to beat the main game, everything else either assumes you have it, or that you'll somehow know that the only way to get the most powerful weapon in the game is to NOT open 4 specific chest early in the game that look the same as all other chests.

- La-Mulana. If you (claim to have) cleared it and the Hell Temple without a guide, you're either the most intelligent gamer ever or a real liar.

- Persona 4. The game actively tries to stop you from getting the best ending.
- Try Finding all the djinn without the guide in the Golden Sun games
- What's that, there's a good ending?
- Silent Hill 3's hard puzzle mode. There's the infamous Shakespeare puzzle, then the puzzle involving the eating habits of the linnet bird (which I'd never even heard of), and then having to know when you're supposed to use your Chekhov's Gun.

Even when it comes down to his goal of capturing or killing Agatha it's hard to argue with him given the circumstances, something the heroes themselves acknowledge. That being said, he is still, without a doubt, the antagonist in the story.

- Starship Troopers, without question. This is what happens when you decide you utterly loathe the original and turn the movie into a ham-fisted parody of the book.
- Starship Troopers, without question. This is what happens when you decide you utterly loathe the original and turn the movie into a brilliant satire on a shitty book. It is, indeed, most triumphant.
- The Fox and the Hound (film). I know it's Disney, but what the everloving fuck - how do you turn a documentary-style novel about hunting lore and natural history that lets you read the animal characters' languageless thoughts into a talking animals musical about racism? HOW?!

- The Hero of Dragon Quest V. His life is full of tragedy but he never gives up! - Justa Username
- Seconded. To elaborate- he gets forced into slavery as a child for ten years of his life or something like that right after his father is literally reduced to ashes in front of his eyes. Not too long after that, he gets married and presumably laid, so all's well, right? Guess again. THEN he AND his wife are Taken for Granite for another eight or so years, and his OWN CHILDREN don't even MEET him until after those eight years where they endured their own trials JUST TO MEET HIM. Don't you think, as a father, he'd feel all the worse knowing that as well? And he STILL needs to find his wife! And the worst part is that you probably named him after yourself, so this might as well double for a Most Triumphant Example as a Player Punch too. Oh, and that mother of yours you try to rescue in the Very Definitely Final Dungeon? Dies right after you meet her for the first time you EVER see her. - Cedi

- Item Crafting
- The Rune Factory series. While in most games Item Crafting is simply some side thing you don't have to bother with, here the Item Crafting system is incredibly deep and central to the game, tying the farming and dungeon aspects together very nicely.
- Infinite Undiscovery.
- Atelier is this trope

- Berserk loves this trope
- Narutaru. Nothing else compares to having your father die, then having your mother die, then your best friend, then your boyfriend and your/his monster partner, and then finally saying fuck you to the world and destroying it with your incredible godlike powers. This all happens in the last 2 chapters.
- How could he possibly be worse?
- Grave of the Fireflies. Just... wow. It gets even more worse when you know it's based on a true story - on, really, thousands of true stories.
- Eversion

- Now and Then, Here and There. As put by one troper, this is It Got Worse: The Series.
- One Piece. To think this was a nice, fun, and happy series... it all went downhill when poor Luffy lost his crew, was sent to a distant island, learned his brother was going to be executed, broke into a maximum security prison, found out his brother was already gone by the time he reaches the lowest floor, ran all the way back up, went to the Marine HQ, fought the marines, and his brother still ended up giving his life to save him, causing him to go into a traumatic trance that lasted for several weeks. After learning his brother died and that it wasn't a dream, he completely breaks down and cries. Meanwhile, with Whitebeard dead, not only are islands that were formerly under his control now fighting for domination, but Blackbeard has both the Yami Yami Fruit and the Gura Gura Fruit and now declares himself the strongest pirate of this new age (At this point, it's improbable to argue). To think this was a nice, fun, and happy series...
- School Days
- The episode "The Graduates" of Kenan and Kel manages to be a triumphant example of this trope in a sitcom.
- Bokurano takes this to such an extreme that it's hard to imagine how it could possibly be worse. It starts with a group of middle-school children being contracted into a "game" to fight enemy mecha. First, they find out that it's not a game at all, and the giant robots are real, causing thousands of deaths from collateral damage during the battles. Then, it turns out that the robot runs on the pilot's life force, and the contract is unbreakable -- so they're all going to die as a result of the battles. But if they lose even one battle, the whole universe would be destroyed. Sound hopeless enough? Oh, one more thing: the other robots are piloted by children from other Earths in the same situation, so they kill billions of people each time they win. Mohiro Kitoh is the master of this trope.
- Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk, a series of short stories where everything, in every story, gets worse. The first story is "Guts", a real life Brown Note that has caused someone to faint everyplace Palahniuk read it while on tour. (Well, except in New York.) And it keeps getting worse.

- Dr. Jekyll is Mr. Hyde. So utterly it-was-his-sled that nowadays most people don't even know that it was originally a big reveal and plot twist in the original version of the story. -Ziggy Zag
- I have to agree with this one. Out of this list, this was the one that surprised me the most. You learn that they're the same person before you learn that was a plot twist nowadays. In fact, most of the time, you never learn that was the plot twist unless you read it.
